2 Course Offerings 2014 Adult delegates may select one class in each of the two (2) class sessions offered. Classes Will Meet As Follows Session I Session II Monday 12:30 2:45 pm 3:00 5:15 pm Tuesday Thursday 8:00 10:00 am 2:00 4:15 pm Friday 8:00 9:30 am 9:45 10:45 am **If Schedule changes occur, participants will be notified. King's Kids (KK up to 12 years of age) meet during Sessions I and II. Baptist Youth Fellowship (BYF Youth ages 13-18) and Young Adult Explosion (Ages 19-29) Select one class that will meet during Session I. BYF and Young Adult Explosion meet during the Session II time period** Chaperone Class will meet during Session 11 on Monday in the Abraham Lincoln Hotel in the Freeport A Room SPECIAL CLASSES AND GROUPS: Specialization Education Studies Program (SESP This program of study is the advanced study program of the Sunday School Publishing Board. Participants in this program will have completed the Certificate of Progress Program (COPP). Evidence of completion of the COPP must be presented and an application for enrollment approved, prior to participation. Communication/Church Workshop course 9024 Computers in the Life of the Church and Christian Education/Christian Church Leadership course 2076 Using the Internet for Biblical Research will be offered as special classes during this session. Persons desiring to participate in these classes must bring a Laptop with Microsoft Office software installed and should have internet access capability. Discussion Groups and Lecture series are designated for specific topic areas and will be listed in accordance to Divisions. Participants in the specified topic areas will meet Tuesday through Thursday and will be provided with general thematic emphases on the work in which delegates engage within their local Church. *CC stands for Certified Course

Ball Coordinator 2014 COURSES / INSTRUCTORS/LOCATIONS 1004 Effective Bible Reading Sister Alexis Carmichael Session CC 1 1 This course identifies methods and approaches to Bible study that can lead to spiritual growth and Christian maturity. Areas that will be covered include the structure of the Bible, resources for personal study and other subjects that will add meaning to the reading of the Bible The Synoptic Gospels Sister Sandra Berry Session 1 CC 2 This course will focus on the Synoptic Gospels Matthew, Mark and Luke. Students will study the life and ministry of Jesus Christ as portrayed by these three writers. Through this comparative study, students will gain a more comprehensive understanding of Jesus ministry Introduction to the Old Reverend Joseph Session 1 CC 1 Testament Williamson III This course will survey the Old Testament. Included in this survey will be a general overview of the divisions, time periods, places, events, people and archaeology of the Old Testament Introduction to the New Dr. Matthew Turner Session 1 CC 1 Testament This course will survey the New Testament. Included in this survey will be a general overview of the divisions, time periods, places, events, people and archaeology of the New Testament sections of the Bible The Sermon on the Mount Reverend Walstone Francis Session 2 CC This course will focus on the teaching principles expounded by Jesus as He taught about kingdom principles and spiritual life. The two accounts (the books of Matthew and Luke) will be comparatively analyzed. Students will apply these teachings to various aspects of everyday living Survey of Romans Reverend Eugene Roberson Session 2 CC 3 This course will focus on a thematic overview of major issues presented in Paul s doctrinal letter to the Roman Christians. Students will come to recognize each doctrinal truth presented in the book Survey of Revelation Reverend George Bowen Session 2 CC 4 This course will focus on the book of Revelation with emphases on authorship, date, theme and recipients. The prophetic themes, symbols and interpretations of various revelations will be discussed.
4 CHRISTIAN EDUCATION/CHRISTIAN CHURCH LEADERSHIP Rev. Arturo Barnes, Coordinator 2007 Christian Stewardship Sister Karen Bell Session 1 CC 1 This course will cover the basic tenets of Christian Stewardship time, talent and tithe. Students will learn how to effectively manage their resources through a better understanding of the spiritual principles, practices and contributions of Christian Stewardship The Articles of Faith Dr. Henrietta Brinson Session 1 CC The student will receive an introductory study of the Articles of Faith for Baptists, a long-time standard of the church. Students will evaluate each thought, with emphasis placed on biblical support Foundation of Christian Ethics Reverend Joseph Tracy Session 1 CC 4 This course is designed for understanding the philosophical and Christological approaches to Christian ethics. Students will engage in biblical principles for decision-making and conduct for living The Educational Task of the Minister Linda Young Session 1 CC Church This course seeks to acquaint the students with the various educational ministries of the local church and focuses on the unique role each ministry plays in the attainment of the total educational goals of the local church. Emphasis will be placed on the responsibility of each Christian to participate in the Christian education activities of the church 2048 Teaching Discipline to Our Youth Sister Mayrona Hicks Session 2 CC At Home and At Church This class is designed for youth workers in the church, with emphasis on general etiquette to youth in the local church. Leaders will be encouraged to involve parents as an intricate part of the process of discipline Using the Internet and Technology for Biblical Research Reverend Tyler Prude, Jr. Session 2 CC This course is an innovative and creative approach to Christian Education, worship, Bible study, and administering the church. It covers effective use of Power Point presentations,the Internet, , apps, and other tech tools. It covers developing a technology ministry and a social media ministry and challenges (security and ethical) that must be addressed with policies and procedures Leadership Style of Christ Reverend Scott Onque` Session 2 CC A careful survey in this course will reveal the shepherd-spirit of Jesus Christ. Students will learn from His example how to engage in His form of leadership.
5 CHURCH GROWTH AND DISCIPLESHIP: Mrs. Josephine Hendricks, Coordinator 7002 Developing Skills for Sharing Your Sister Bernice Willis Session 1 CC Faith This course is designed to teach practical skills for sharing biblical knowledge, leading people through the Scriptures, introducing the gospel, leading a person to Christ, praying for repentance and forgiveness and introducing friends and family to Christ through relating the Gospel Methods of Evangelism Reverend Carsie Barnes III Session 2 CC This course will focus on helping the students to share their Christian faith using traditional methods and social media. It will highlight the challenges of the church s ability to reach out to the inner city as well as rural areas. The course will also highlight the need to witness to cultural and ethically diverse groups of people Christian Evangelism Sister Linda M. Jackson Session 2 CC 3 This course is designed to teach the basic steps in developing a program of evangelism. Students will discover the appropriate Scriptures to use, and the methods, techniques and media best suited for witnessing to nonbelievers Discovering Your Spiritual Gifts Dr. Jerome Jackson Session 2 2 This course is designed to help the students understand who God has uniquely made them to be. In addition, in this course, students will work through a spiritual gift assessment that will help them to discover their spiritual gift(s). Discovering their spiritual gift(s) will prepare them to move into a meaningful area of service where they best fit into the body of Christ Ministry of Church Nursing Sister Morinda Morehead Session 1 CC This is a study of the services provided by the nursing ministry of the church. Attention will be given to the needs of this ministry, with special emphasis placed on the tasks appropriate for local church ministry. Health care resources and possible church health-related activities will be identified, including procedures for setting up a health fair and other programs to address the health needs of the community Christianity and Contemporary Sister Ollie Holmes- Session 1 CC 4 Issues Mayfield This course challenges the students to identify and confront contemporary issues. The students will look at issues that affect the church, home, and community. They will be encouraged to think through practical solutions and approaches to immediate and emerging social and ecclesiological concerns.
6 HISTORY/THEOLOGY/FINE ARTS AND LITERACY: Mrs. Ocie McCall, Coordinator 3008 Theology and History of Sister Carolyn J. Davis Session 1 CC 1 Christianity This course will outline the development of the Christian movement from the beginning of Jesus ministry on earth to present times. Students will focus on the history, theology, culture, and times that enable Christianity to develop and grow. Prominent persons who impacted the Christian movement will be identified Doctrine of Salvation Sister Sarah Foster Session 1 CC This course examines the doctrine that teaches eternal salvation. The student will be able to identify why once saved, always saved is a reality Doctrine of the Holy Spirit Sister Cynthia Draper Hill Session 2 CC 2 Students will study the person and work of the Holy Spirit. This study will include a thorough look at the corresponding doctrines that impact our understanding of the work of the Holy Spirit. The students will be able to clearly identify this doctrine of the church with a holistic understanding of salvation, with special emphasis on justification, redemption and sanctification The Doctrine of Prayer Reverend Claude Russell, Session 2 CC Jr. This course is designed to teach the fundamental purpose, principles and power of prayer. It looks into prayer as the channel of communication of the believer to the Father Public Speaking Dr. Minerva Barnes Session 1 CC This course will identify the process and principles for writing speeches and delivering them in public. In addition to writing and speaking skills, the students will learn basic verbal and non-verbal communications skills that will enable them to effectively communicate with audiences of all sizes.
7 CHURCH ADMINISTRATION Mrs. Doris K. Smith, Coordinator 6013 Organizing the Church for Rev. Dr. Nathaniel Randle Session 1 CC 4 Christian Education This course will focus on the various administrative and organizational skills needed to organize the Christian Education Department. Students will focus on structure, leadership and staffing needs for Christian Education Administering the Church School/ Sister Helen Alston Session 1 CC Sunday School This course will focus on the various administrative skills needed to direct the church school. Administrative functions that will be covered include planning, programming, curriculum, budgeting, recruitment, supervision, delegation and evaluation Spiritual Formation Sister Martha Cohrn Session 2 CC 1 This course is designed enable people to mature in their Christian walks. It will focus on a creative and dynamic approach to nurturing people from children to mature adults to become better disciples of Jesus Christ. Students will discuss what it means to be Christians. DEACON DAVID A. BOZEMAN SR. LAYMEN SEMINAR 6003 The Work of the Church Trustee Deacon Milton Taylor Session 1 CC The purpose of this course is to focus on the responsibilities of trustees. Students will be introduced to the work and role of trustees in the church. This course will explore and define duties of trustees, including management, building maintenance and fiscal controls Training Laymen to be Leaders Deacon Marion Hanson Session 2 CC This course is designed to place emphasis on the role of laymen in the world and their responsibility as men to their God over His creation. They will be introduced to the work of the laymen in all National Baptist levels of ministry local, district, state, regional, and national.
8 SPECIALIZATION EDUCATION: SP0005 The Centrality of Christ in the Dr. Lillie White Shaffer Session 1 CC Scriptures-Biblical Studies This course is a focus on the Christ of the Scriptures. Students will examine the Scriptures, from Genesis to Revelation, to see how the biblical narrative has prefigured Jesus, the son of God, as the central focus of the Bible. SP0018 Spiritual Leadership Dr. W. J. Griffin Session 2 Certificate This course will use biblical principles to assist the student in the development of effective leadership practices that are in keeping with biblical teachings. ETA 1 Biblical Leadership Reverend Marlon Weathers Session 1 Certificate This course will help student to grasp a New Testament picture of leadership that is person-centered and team-centered, strategically placed to use their gifts in service of their Lord. ETA 2 Becoming An Effective Teacher Sister Yolanda Weathers Session 2 Certificate This course focuses on the teaching methods of Jesus, insights from current research, an overview of classroom usage, and principles of selection for specific purposes and audiences. Walker Session 1 CC in the Local Church This course will familiarize the students with resources such as needs assessments, curriculum, National Baptist literature, and strategies of the local church and their implementations Creative Ways of Teaching Sister Lillie M. Fox Session 1 CC This course is designed to instruct in the methods of teaching in the local church setting. Norris Flannigan, Coordinator 8025 The Church s Response to Human Dr. Alvin Love Session 1 CC Needs Through Community Action The aim of this course is to provide a framework for the church s involvement in community action. The community action movement will be chronicled. Students will identify the needs of those individuals in the community and develop strategies to address those needs through the vehicle of community action Fundamentals of Preaching in the Dr. L. K. Curry Session Certificate African-American Church African-American preachers developed their preaching as an art unique only to themselves. This course will examine the basic characteristics of African-American preaching (style, mannerisms, gestures; etc.) This course is designed to reveal that art style and pass it on for posterity Biblical Study of the Doctrine of Dr. Rogers Jackson Session 2 CC the Church In this study, the students will identify and examine the major teachings of the church. They will go through a thorough and close study of relevant biblical texts and revisit the basis of the major doctrines and practices of the church Congregational Leadership in the Reverend Nathaniel Allison Session 2 CC Twenty-First Century This course will look at the professional demands of the church leadership on the life of the pastor. Students will look at the practical needs of the congregation, the responsibilities of the leaders, and the need to care for self and the congregation for optimal ministry results. YOUNG MINISTERS SEMINAR (18-25) Rev. Claude White, Coordinator 9907 Characteristics of Expository Reverend Floyd James Session 1 Certificate Preaching This course will seek to sharpen the preacher s expository preaching skills. The students may look at such key research tools as the following: word studies, biblical language skills, computer research, and the use of other sources of historical and hermeneutical value. Expository preaching, as a valuable tool in the preacher s skill set, is presented as a tool that will sharpen the preacher s ability to research and preach a more effective expository sermon Seminar for Young Pastors and Reverend Reginald E. Session Certificate Ministers Bachus Young ministers will study practical matters as church administration, staff relationships, community leadership, ministerial ethics, work with congregational management and other professional issues not normally handled in a classroom setting. The students will review denominational structure and Associational ministry. This seminar is designed to build confidence and skills that lead to more effective ministry.

The students will investigate methods for maximizing choral productivity. This course is also designed to instruct the class in the proper and most productive way to conduct a choir practice, along with various techniques that will allow for an efficient and effective practice period Great Hymn of the Church Sister Audrey Mock Session 1 Certificate This course will provide a study on several of the great hymns of the church. Students will investigate the history of the words and the music as well as the importance of the story in the song. The course will challenge the believers to recognize immoral trends, fads and behavior. 13 The King s Kids (Ages 3-12) Class Course Title Instructor Time Type Ages 3 6 The Creation Sister Rita Doublin Session 1& 2 Certificate Two main objectives in teaching children about Creation are: 1) To help them visualize what the world was like at the time of creation and the flood, 2) and to get them to associate things and animals we have today with the creation days and thereby learn about the creation days. The emphasis is on imagining things at the beginning, learning about what Genesis teaches, and seeing God s power, goodness and creativity. Age 7 God s Plan of Salvation Sister Doris Thomas Session 1 & 2 Certificate The main objective is to teach the children about The Plan of Salvation and what they are expected to do after receiving Christ.
