1 Course Syllabus Fall 2015 NARRATIVE PREACHING THE POWER OF STORY PAST MONDAYS 6:45 9:20 PM SEPTEMBER 14 - DECEMBER 7, 2015 INSTRUCTOR: DR. FREDERICK W. COURSE DESCRIPTION This course will build on the philosophy of expository preaching presented in Introduction to Preaching, Past The course will focus on preaching biblical narratives while upholding a commitment to biblical exposition. Students will prepare sermon outlines and preach in class on assigned texts. The course will emphasizes narrative preaching from Old and New Testament narrative passages. Students will also study preaching style, audience analysis and other significant aspects of the preaching event. Pre-requisites: Introduction to Preaching, Past 0641 II. 2 Preach a narrative, expository sermon Develop effective delivery and communication skills Know the principles of effective preaching Identify and communicate a single big idea. Understand the connection between spirituality and preaching. Prepare a narrative sermon outline Exegete a biblical text for sermon preparation. III. COURSE REQUIREMENTS A. REQUIRED READING: 1. Craig Blomberg; Preaching The Parables. ISBN-10: Fred Craddock: Preaching. ISBN: Tim Keller Preaching: Communicating Faith In An Age Of Skepticism. ISBN: C. ASSIGNMENTS AND GRADING Read both texts and submit a 6-7 page theological reflection paper on the theology and methodology of preaching in the Craddock and Keller texts in a comparative and contrasting manner. Provide a careful and thorough examination of the basic issues(s) at stake in the texts, and to evaluate the relative strength(s) and/or weakness(es) of the author s case. Seek to review the work critically: don t merely summarize but, rather, seek to express the dominant issues and argument of the work. Due Date: Class 2 Grade value: 10% Prepare the exegesis assignments (as per handout). Include research from a minimum of 5 biblical and theological commentaries or dictionaries. Grade value: 3 x 10% = 30% Prepare 3 sermon outlines. Approved texts and guidelines will be provided. One passage from the OT narratives; one from the parables; the third message will be a first person sermon outline. Substantive research is expected and citation noted in your bibliography. 3 Develop the above 3 sermon outlines into full manuscript sermons. Point form manuscripts are not acceptable. Two sermons will be preached in class and one in a church setting and a video file will be submitted. In addition the in church sermon will require a sermon feedback group to meet with you after the sermon is preached. A feedback form will be supplied to facilitate effective evaluation. Each sermon will include a word study attached as an appendix. Use of original languages is expected where possible. Show evidence of all your research in a bibliography. Attach a copy of your sermon outline as an appendix. Grade value: 3 x 10= 30% D. GENERAL GUIDELINES FOR THE SUBMISSION OF WRITTEN WORK 1. Your work should demonstrate the following characteristics: For proper citation style, consult the Chicago-Style Quick Guide (Tyndale e-resource) or the full edition of the Chicago Manual of Style Online, especially ch. 14. For citing scripture texts, refer to sections to and to Academic Integrity Integrity in academic work is required of all our students. Academic dishonesty is any breach of this integrity, and includes such practices as cheating (the use of unauthorized material on tests and examinations), submitting the same work for different classes without permission of the instructors; using false information (including false references to secondary sources) in an assignment; improper or unacknowledged collaboration with other students, and plagiarism. 4 Total Grade 100 % F. COURSE EVALUATION Tyndale Seminary values quality in the courses it offers its students. End-of-course evaluations provide valuable student feedback and are one of the ways that Tyndale Seminary works towards maintaining and improving the quality of courses and the student s learning experience. Student involvement in this process is critical to enhance the general quality of teaching and learning.
