2017 ANNUAL REPORT THE CHRISTIAN AND MISSIONARY ALLIANCE 1
CHAIRMAN OF THE BOARD s I look back over the past year, I again marvel at God s faithfulness. He has clearly placed Alliance people in the crossroads of human need whether banding together to help those devastated by natural disasters or helping refugees and other overlooked people find fresh hope in Jesus the Alliance family has followed our Father s heart into the lives of the lost ones He so loves. Centered in Christ and empowered by His Spirit, The Alliance has remained true to this mission for more than 130 years. Because our strategy is proven and our funding model is strong, the impact of Alliance ministry extends from shore to shore and generation to generation. When we lock arms together as a Christ-centered, Acts 1:8 family, we fulfill Jesus mandate to create gospel access for all peoples. On behalf of the hundreds of Alliance workers you support and the thousands they are leading from darkness to light, thank you! Because of your sacrificial obedience, The Alliance continues to pursue and fulfill what our heavenly Father holds dear. Privileged to serve arm-in-arm with you, Jonathan Schaeffer A WHO WE ARE T he Christian and Missionary Alliance (the C&MA, The Alliance) establishes churches, schools, clinics, hospitals, community centers, and radio stations and engages in other strategic initiatives in partnership with governmental and nongovernmental organizations. These entities request assistance from C&MA partners, who help them fulfill their vision for development in their communities and nations. The C&MA, a faith-based organization, also provides holistic, compassionate care to men, women, and children whose lives have been impacted by disease, poverty, political turmoil, and natural disasters. The C&MA has been a pioneer in training emerging leaders throughout the world to reach and disciple their own people. To learn more about the C&MA, visit: We desire to know Jesus Christ as Savior, Sanctifier, Healer, and Coming King and to complete His Great Commission BOARD OF DIRECTORS Mr. David Bishop President/CEO Bishop Business Equipment Co., Elkhorn, Nebraska Mrs. Marcia Braun Retired International Worker Redding, California Mr. Keith Crownover President/CEO Delta Health Technologies, Altoona, Pennsylvania Dr. Stephen Elliot Pastor First Alliance Church, Lexington, Kentucky Rev. DIVERSITY OF IMPACT If ever there were a group of Christ-followers birthed from taking the whole gospel to the whole person, it is The Alliance. History has shown that they are consistent in showing the love of Jesus, in word and deed, to those whom God loves. 5 UNITED STATES DREAMS REALIZED In the past year, the C&MA has given $225,000 in 21 grants as part of the Dream Incentive grant program. One such grant was awarded to an Alliance church in Edgewood, Maryland, to renovate a dilapidated basketball court and to establish an outreach program to young people in the community. Another grant funded an English-language tutoring program for Spanish-speaking children in an Alliance church in Florida. CHURCH PLANTERS EQUIPPED More than 200 individuals are currently preparing for new church-planting projects through training provided by the C&MA s Greenhouse Initiative. The goal of this program is to establish 100 congregation-based training centers where churchplanting teams can be mentored and equipped. A joyful young woman celebrates her new life 8 in Christ at Eagle Church in Zionsville, Indiana. 9
The least of these: Relief supplies were delivered to a small village near Quito, Ecuador, following a magnitude 7.8 earthquake. A Jordanian church leader prays for the Syrian refugee families who have fled to Mafraq, Jordan. LATIN AMERICA EUROPE & THE MIDDLE EAST NATURAL DISASTER VICTIMS HELPED Last year, Ecuador suffered a major earthquake, and Peru and Colombia experienced devastating mudslides. Alliance national churches in other Latin American countries have joined together to respond to these natural disasters and are taking the initiative to help their neighboring nations. REFUGEES FOUND HOPE Two Alliance couples, in partnership with the German C&MA, launched a new initiative to serve the thousands of Syrian refugees in Berlin. In just a few months, the team renovated and opened a storefront community center called The Lighthouse. Four Muslim-background adults have already received Christ through this ministry. CLOSED DOORS OPENED The Alliance church-planting movement in Cuba began 20 years ago. Today there are 62 Alliance churches across Cuba with the goal of planting 60 more by Now, with the opening of Cuba, the U.S. Alliance has been invited to assist churches in Latin America and Canada to come alongside their Cuban brothers and sisters to provide training and encouragement. MULTINATIONAL PARTNERSHIPS ESTABLISHED An Alliance team of three Americans and two Brazilians started a new church in a rented storefront in the city of Paredes, near Porto, Portugal. The team has employed creative methods of evangelism and has been proactive in building favor among community residents
Africans in a remote village listen intently to an audio recording of God s Word. Alliance workers are using creative methods to introduce Jesus to people bound by centuries of religious tradition. AFRICA NORTH & CENTRAL ASIA GOSPEL SHARED THROUGH STORYTELLING An oral approach to sharing the gospel among the formerly resistant Vili people of southern Congo has resulted in an unprecedented response. An Alliance orality team conducted a three-week trip to Vili villages and shared the good news through oral stories 37 people made decisions to follow Jesus. One of the village chiefs is now considering the claims of Christ. DISCIPLESHIP GROUPS FORMED The Alliance team in a former communist-controlled country has garnered an excellent reputation from three local universities where they teach conversational English. Students are invited for additional English lessons and cultural activities at a rented center where the gospel is presented in seeker-friendly ways. Four Bible discussion groups have formed as a result of relationships built. BELIEVERS BAPTIZED God s Spirit is at work in a country in North Africa. Three years ago there were only six recorded baptisms; whereas this past year, 72 people came to faith in Christ and have been baptized. Next year, Alliance workers are trusting that number will double! NEXT-GEN LEADERS TRAINED In a strategic city in China, an Alliance team has developed an intensive sevenstep discipleship program for training university students. This program has now expanded to include the training of Chinese pastors across China as well as Chinese leaders from five other countries
ASIA & PACIFIC LEADERS DEVELOPED God is up to big things among the Hmong people in Thailand, Vietnam, and Laos. In one country alone, there are more than 1,000 Hmong churches and most are without a pastor. Recently, International Ministries and the U.S. Hmong District partnered in sending a couple to train new pastors and to establish a series of training centers. WORKERS ASSIGNED TO UNREACHED PEOPLE GROUPS Two new couples were appointed for ministry on two southeast Asian Muslimmajority islands. Each couple will take the gospel to one of the many Muslim people groups, among whom there is little to no gospel access. Dozens of future church leaders in Southeast Asia 14 participate in a pastoral training seminar. 15

FROM THE PRESIDENT I love being teamed. The privilege of advancing the love of Jesus to the people of the world is too great a calling to attempt alone. Hence, it is with deep appreciation that I thank you for your partnership. The stories you ve just read are your stories. Because of your vital support and sacrifice, lives are being changed around the globe. As I look forward to what lies ahead for The Alliance, I have great expectancy. Tumultuous times provide tremendous opportunity for the gospel to be demonstrated and articulated. The love, hope, forgiveness and restoration available in Jesus are most vividly evidenced in times of crisis, instability and hardship. As we enter into the suffering, we evidence the truth that evil doesn t get the final word. It is at moments such as we now live that The Alliance arises with the message that transforms. Again, I thank you for your partnership and I look ahead with anticipation that more redemptive stories will be written. Together for His Kingdom, John Stumbo President, U.S. C&MA 18 Building authentic personal relationships often opens the door to share the love of Christ with those who are seeking truth.
Anything that doesn t directly aid in the advancing of the gospel must be questioned, silenced, stopped, or replaced.
