Watch Yo Mouth Heart (Matthew 12:33-37) Group Notes I. Ice Breaker (5-10 minutes) a. Ask the group to think of one word spontaneously to associate with a word the leader chooses (ex. culture ). Then ask the group to share their word. II. PRAY III. Open Discussion (10-15 minutes) a. Where might you have seen God at work this week? IV. Discussion Questions (50 Minutes) a. Focal passages: Matthew 12: Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. 34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. 36 I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. 1. Anything from sermon that stood out / challenged / confused? 2. Key words/phrases that stand out in the passage? 3. Who is Jesus audience in this passage (see Matthew 12:24)? (Pharisees/religious teachers who accused Jesus of teaming with Satan)
4. What strong words does Jesus use in this passage? Why is he speaking with such intensity? 5. What does Jesus mean by Make the tree good or bad in v33? (see Matthew 12:30) 6. How would you paraphrase verses 34-35? a. Does this concern you when you think about the words you speak? b. What can you do about it? (Repent. [Godly sorrow, confess and receive forgiveness, trust in God s power to not do it again] We move forward without condemnation) 7. What does Matthew 12:36-37 say about our accountability for our words? 8. Careless in v36 means inoperative, nonworking or empty. What might be some examples of this? 9. Compare v36-37 with Romans 10:9-10. What role does our speech play in our salvation? 10. What impact positive or negative can our words have on our usefulness for Christ? How have your words impacted your own witness in the past? (Allow time for group to minister if necessary) V. Prayer Requests (10-15 minutes) a. How can we pray for you tonight?
Sermon Notes Watch Yo Heart! THESIS STATEMENT: Our words matter. The words we speak are signposts pointing to what s inside of us. They are the produce of our hearts. TRANSITION: This morning I want us to see that what we say reveals something about us. It reveals what we believe about Jesus. It reveals what we believe about ourselves (who/what we identify with). Therefore what we say matters to God. Sermon WHAT YOU SAY REVEALS WHAT YOU BELIEVE ABOUT JESUS 33 Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. (Pharisee s constantly criticizing Jesus) Jesus is either all good or all bad o v30 - Whoever is not with me is against me, and whoever does not gather with me scatters. A tree is known by its fruit o What kind of fruit has Jesus produced? Heal the sick, blind, lame, cast out demons, preach forgiveness of sins, reconciliation w/ God, eternal life What do you say about Jesus? o no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says Jesus is accursed! and no one can say Jesus is Lord except in the Holy Spirit. (1 Cor. 12:3) WHAT YOU SAY REVEALS WHAT/WHO YOU IDENTIFY WITH 34 You brood of vipers! How can you speak good, when you are evil? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good person out of his good treasure brings forth good, and the evil person out of his evil treasure brings forth evil. Matthew Henry Men's language discovers what country they are of, likewise what manner of spirit they are of. The heart is the fountain, words are the streams. The Fruit of Humanity
FB Friend - Whatever happened to manners and being nice? Why does everything feel so mean spirited, vindictive, violent, and cruel? What happened to our humanity? o Someone s Reply - People have always been cruel, now they have a wider platform thanks to social media. That which was hidden is now in the light. (it was always there) Not only wider platform but feel more comfortable doing so. Two places people's ugliness comes out: Behind the wheel and on the Internet. o Because true colors come out when alone o I m not pessimistic about life But society wants to ignore the root (the sin factor) o I am very much an optimist Some just don t want to hear my optimistic answer: JESUS! o What happened to our humanity happened in Genesis 3 People don t want to hear that o We can t solve what happened in Genesis 3 People don t want to hear that o The solution to what happened to humanity (sin) is JESUS! TRANSITION: Changing the fruit must come from the root (your treasure). But first we must examine our fruit (our words). Examining Our Fruit Hurtful words can often be traced to a hurting person. Hurt people hurt people hurt can turn into evil words/actions. We are wise to identify to ask where that evil is coming from o If you re a God s child, look at it as God doing surgical work o Larry Whenever I read Out of the abundance I realize what is still in me and how far I still have to go. o The wound has to be uncovered; that s painful o Is there something more to those Freudian slips? o They may not have been consciously planned But all the more reason to ask where coming from
o They are fruit, signs, markers WHAT YOU SAY MATTERS TO GOD 36 I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless (spontaneous) word they speak (Beelzebul accustation), 37 for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned. Choose your words wisely o Rather examine your hearts wisely Behind our actions and words lies our character Commentator - (Our words) will enter into that great total which determines the divine estimate of his character All excuses and justifications will be stripped away. o They (we) will see clearly. If by our words we are justified, who will stand? BUT Everyone who (by their words) calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. (Romans 10:13) APPLICATION: GETTING TO THE ROOT Let s return to Jesus initial statement o 33 Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad, for the tree is known by its fruit. Let s apply it to you now o You see rotten fruit being produced o Jesus says make the tree good and its fruit good o Immediately your mind shifts to do, do, do (shift dirt) o You leave here, you try, fail, repeat, then accept, give up o You do, do, do but Jesus says BE STICKY STATEMENT: If you want to gain victory over your sin (words), you need root work, not fruit work. Heart surgery, not oral surgery. TRANSITION: How? We can t change roots (hearts). BUT Jesus can.
Conclusion HOW TO MAKE THE TREE GOOD 1. Examine the fruit (curiosity not shame) 2. Go from fruit to root a. What does fruit reveal I m believing about me? i. Self-righteous? Self-loathing? b. What does it reveal that I believe about God? i. Who He is? What He has done? Am I trusting Him? 3. Repent 4. Bear fruit in keeping with repentance. (Matthew 3:8) a. You have to boldly trust Holy Spirit and act here. CONFESSION AND RESTORATION (Doug) (Bow heads) Confess it Vision for the Future
