GOAL That we might understand our role in Worship on Sunday morning.
OUTCOMES 1. See that we need God s gift of faith in order to truly worship Him.
OUTCOMES 1. See that we need God s gift of faith in order to truly worship Him. 2. Recognize that worship must conform to the truth of God s Word
OUTCOMES 1. See that we need God s gift of faith in order to truly worship Him. 2. Recognize that worship must conform to the truth of God s Word 3. Apply our faith in worship and in every aspect of our lives.
PRAYER Almighty God, our heavenly Father, without Your help our labor is useless, and without Your light our search is in vain. Invigorate our study of Your holy Word that, by due diligence and right discernment, we may establish our study in true worship in Your holy faith; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
CATECHISM I believe that God has made me and all creatures; that He has given me my body and soul, eyes, ears, and all my members, my reason and all my senses, and still takes care of them. He also gives me clothing and shoes, food and drink, house and home, wife and children, land, animals, and all I have. He richly and daily provides me with all that I need to support this body and life. He defends me against all danger and guards and protects me from all evil. All this He does only out of fatherly, divine goodness and mercy, without any merit or worthiness in me. For all this it is my duty to thank and praise, serve and obey Him. This is most certainly true.
CATECHISM What is confession? Confession has two parts. First, that we confess our sins, and second, that we receive absolution, that is, forgiveness, from the pastor as from God Himself, not doubting, but firmly believing that by it our sins are forgiven before God in heaven.
God wishes us to believe Him and to receive from Him blessings, and this He declares to be true divine service. Philip Melanchthon, Apology of the Augsburg Confession III:107
Question Driving home from worship one Sunday morning, Susan pondered Pastor s sermon. He drew a connection between the Gospel reading and their community in a way she had not considered before. Intrigued, she asked her family what they thought of the message. Her question was met with an awkward silence. When she pressed further, it seemed that no one else had listened to the sermon. Come on, Mom, her son complained, isn t it enough that we went to church?
Question How would you respond to the son s question? Come on, Mom, her son complained, isn t it enough that we went to church?
Question Are you ever tempted to think of worship as something to attend and watch, but not really participate in? Why does this happen?
In Spirit and Truth In John 4, Jesus talks with a Samaritan woman who had led a sad and sinful life. When His questions get too personal, she tries to distract Him with a question on worship. Read John 4: What does she ask? How does Jesus respond? What do you think it means to worship in spirit?
John 4: "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."
John 4: Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem. 22 You Samaritans worship what you do not know; we worship what we do know, for salvation is from the Jews. 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."
John 4: The woman said, "I know that Messiah" (called Christ) "is coming. When he comes, he will explain everything to us."
John 4: Then Jesus declared, "I who speak to you am he."
In Spirit and Truth When Jesus questions get too personal, the woman at the well tries to distract Him with a question on worship. What does she ask?
In Spirit and Truth 19 "Sir," the woman said, "I can see that you are a prophet. 20 Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, but you Jews claim that the place where we must worship is in Jerusalem."
In Spirit and Truth How does Jesus respond?
In Spirit and Truth 21 Jesus declared, "Believe me, woman, a time is coming when you will worship the Father neither on this mountain nor in Jerusalem.
In Spirit and Truth What do you think it means to worship in spirit?
In Spirit and Truth Many of our worship services begin with Confession and Absolution.
1 John 1:8 9 8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
Psalm 32:5 5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, "I will confess my transgressions to the LORD " and you forgave the guilt of my sin.
In Spirit and Truth Why are Confession and Absolution important preparation for worship?
In Spirit and Truth In John 4:23 24, Jesus told the woman that true worshipers worship in spirit. What else did He teach her?
In Spirit and Truth 23 Yet a time is coming and has now come when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth, for they are the kind of worshipers the Father seeks. 24 God is spirit, and his worshipers must worship in spirit and in truth."
In Spirit and Truth What does it mean to worship in truth? See also John 17:17. Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.
In Spirit and Truth Sometimes, Christians speak as if this emphasis on spirit and truth is unique to the New Testament. Read Hosea 6:6. How does this passage reflect this same teaching? For I desire mercy, not sacrifice, and acknowledgment of God rather than burnt offerings.
In Spirit and Truth Hosea calls us to a living faith. Read Romans 12:1. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship.
In Spirit and Truth Hosea calls us to a living faith. Read Romans 12:1. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship. What does this verse call us to do?
In Spirit and Truth Hosea calls us to a living faith. Read Romans 12:1. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship. What is our motivation for this?
In Spirit and Truth Hosea calls us to a living faith. Read Romans 12:1. Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God this is your spiritual act of worship. How can we do this?
By Faith Alone Seeing this biblical teaching on worship, is it ever proper for us to consider worship simply as going through the motions, or mindlessly repeating words or actions?
By Faith Alone What can we do to avoid these problems?
By Faith Alone Every religion in the world has some form of worship. Most of the members of these religions seem sincere and many seem to live good lives. Without faith in Christ, are they engaged in true worship?
By Faith Alone God reveals Himself to us and calls us to worship Him. How should we relate to those who do not acknowledge Him or worship Him? See 1 Peter 3:15.
By Faith Alone 1 Peter 3:15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect,
TAKING STOCK We have seen how our worship is rightly preceded by confession and absolution. Read Matthew 6: Give us today our daily bread. 12Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.
TAKING STOCK We have seen how our worship is rightly preceded by confession and absolution. Read Matthew 6: Give us today our daily bread. 12Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. What hint do these words of Jesus contain about how often we should pray?
TAKING STOCK We have seen how our worship is rightly preceded by confession and absolution. Read Matthew 6: Give us today our daily bread. 12Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors. How often we should ask for forgiveness?
TAKING STOCK In our introduction, we saw Susan talking with her family about worship. What blessings might you describe for them from the Divine Service? How does God speak to you in His Word? How does He nourish and nurture your faith?
