Page1 A14. Jesus is Baptized Luke 3:21-22; Mark 1:1-11; Matthew 3:13-17 Learning Objectives 1. The children will examine the story of John the Baptist and God s plan for him. 2. The children will recognize that God also has a plan for our lives. Getting Started Memory Verse: You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased. --Luke 3:22 (NKJV) Choose One All Ages Object Lesson Water You will need a bowl of water for this object lesson. Draw the children s attention to the bowl of water. Ask them to think of all the different ways they use water at home. Explain that water can be used for many different things. Ask the children about when water is used for a special event at church. (Holy Baptism give the children clues as needed.) After their responses, tell them that in the lesson today they will learn what happened when John the Baptist baptized Jesus. Grades K-2 Names of Jesus Coloring Sheet See: Click on younger children from the menu bar Click on J and look for Jesus in bold scroll down to 9. Who do you Say I am? Scroll down to Early Arrivers Activity #1 You will need printer paper, and crayons or markers for this activity. You will also need to print out the coloring sheets and make copies before class. Please see the above website for the coloring sheet and detailed instructions. Grades 3-5 The "Good News" Puzzle See: New Testament Lesson 214 Teacher s Guide - Page 2 You will need to make a copy of The Good News puzzle sheet (see attached), one for each student, before class. The children will use the code on the sheet to discover the message that comes from 2 Corinthians 5:21. If they are really thinking, they may decode the Bible reference first, then use their Bible to look up the verse. You may wish to reward the child that gets the answer first with a small prize (bookmark, sticker, etc.).
Page2 Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions Message: God has a plan for me. Teacher Note Please see the attached ROLE PLAY activity as another option to enhance the story telling for this lesson about John the Baptist. Luke 3 ~ The Baptism and Family Line of Jesus 21 When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened. 22 The Holy Spirit came down on him in the form of a dove. A voice came from heaven. It said, "You are my Son, and I love you. I am very pleased with you." Mark 1 ~ John the Baptist Prepares the Way 1 This is the beginning of the good news about Jesus Christ, the Son of God. 2 Long ago Isaiah the prophet wrote, "I will send my messenger ahead of you. He will prepare your way." (Malachi 3:1) 3 "A messenger is calling out in the desert, 'Prepare the way for the Lord. Make straight paths for him.' " (Isaiah 40:3) 4 And so John came. He baptized people in the desert. He also preached that people should be baptized and turn away from their sins. Then God would forgive them. 5 All the people from the countryside of Judea went out to him. All the people from Jerusalem went too. When they admitted they had sinned, John baptized them in the Jordan River. 6 John wore clothes made out of camel's hair. He had a leather belt around his waist. And he ate locusts and wild honey. 7 Here is what John was preaching. "After me, one will come who is more powerful than I am. I'm not good enough to bend down and untie his sandals. 8 I baptize you with water. But he will baptize you with the Holy Spirit." Jesus Is Baptized 9 At that time Jesus came from Nazareth in Galilee. John baptized him in the Jordan River. 10 Jesus was coming up out of the water. Just then he saw heaven being torn open. He saw the Holy Spirit coming down on him like a dove. 11 A voice spoke to him from heaven. It said, "You are my Son, and I love you. I am very pleased with you." Matthew 3 ~ Jesus Is Baptized 13 Jesus came from Galilee to the Jordan River. He wanted to be baptized by John. 14 But John tried to stop him. So he told Jesus, I need to be baptized by you. So why do you come to me? 15 Jesus replied, Let it be this way for now. It is right for us to do this. It carries out God s holy plan. Then John agreed. 16 As soon as Jesus was baptized, he came up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened. Jesus saw the Spirit of God coming down on him like a dove. 17 A voice from heaven said, This is my Son, and I love him. I am very pleased with him.
Page3 Bible Lesson with Discussion Questions - Continued Discussion Questions: 1. What did John the Baptist eat for food? (Locusts and honey.) 2. What did John the Baptist come to do? (Tell people that Jesus was coming.) 3. Did many people go out to see John? (Yes.) 4. If you were living back then, how far would you walk to see John the Baptist? Why? (Discuss. Answers will vary.) 5. What did the people do when they saw John the Baptist? (They confessed their sins.) 6. Why was John the Baptist special to God? (He worked hard telling people about Jesus.) 7. Why do you think Jesus wanted John to baptize Him? (Discuss. Answers will vary. Explain that it was not necessary for Jesus to be baptized because He never sinned. However, in being baptized he was an example for all sinners.) 8. What did God say about His Son, Jesus? (He was very pleased with Him.) 9. What do you think the dove symbolized? (The Holy Spirit, peace, love and forgiveness.) Application to Real Life Enjoy the locust cookies from the Hook/Intro Activity section as a snack (or bring another cookie snack to share) and continue with the discussion. Remind the children that everyone has a special talent, something they are good at doing. Today's story is about John the Baptist. His special gift was to tell people that Jesus was coming. That was God s plan for his life and he worked so hard telling the people about Jesus that he didn't care what he had to eat and often ate locusts and honey. Brainstorm with the children about their talents. What do they think God s plan might be for them? How might they use their talent to serve Him? Review the message statement. Remind the children to pray and ask God to show them what His plan is for their lives. Memory Work Fun 1. Recite the memory verse. 2. Practice finding the memory verse and/or Bible text in their Bible! 3. Name the three Holy Sacraments. Which one are we talking about today? 4. What is Holy Baptism? Review what happens when a person is baptized. Activity Ideas Choose One All Ages Fully Cleansed Object Talk See: Grade School Object Talks Fully Cleansed You will need a clear glass, a pitcher of water, a bucket, dirt and a spoon for this activity. Please see the above website for detailed instructions on the experiment. Use it to demonstrate what happens when a person becomes baptized with water.
Page4 Activity Ideas Choose One All Ages continued DOVE craft Before the activity you will need to print one dove template on heavier weight paper for each child. (As an alternative you could also trace the pieces onto a thin paper plate for each child.) Cut the dotted line in the middle of the body. (Pre-cut the template pieces for younger children.) Be sure to also make a sample craft before class. What You Should Do: 1. Give each child a dove template and a pair of scissors. Ask the children to cut out each of the template pieces. 2. Place the half circle piece from the template through the slot on the dove s body. You may need to use tape to help it stay in place. 3. Cut the dotted line on the tail and slide the tail feather piece into the slot. 4. For added support, fold each of the rectangular pieces in half. Using these pieces and tape, support the underside of the dove s tail feathers or wings on both sides of the body. Cut any excess paper off. 5. The children should write the memory verse on their dove (help younger children with this) and can then decorate their dove with various white craft materials. After the children complete the craft, discuss with them the significance of the dove in the Bible story. Grades K-2 Tell Others About Jesus 3-D Locust See: put your mouse on Bible Crafts from the top menu bar and scroll down to click on J Crafts Scroll down the page looking on the left side for John the Baptist Click on Tell Others About Jesus Locust Craft Please see the above website for directions for this craft. You will need to print out the locust pattern before class and provide materials for coloring and cutting. Continue the conversation as you work, reminding the children about God s plan for John the Baptist s life and exploring what His plan might be for their lives. Prepare the Way Match Game See: put your mouse on Bible Crafts from the top menu bar and scroll down to click on J Crafts Scroll down the page looking on the left side for John the Baptist Click on John the Baptist Match Game Tell the children how John the Baptist prepared the way for Jesus by telling others to be ready because he was coming soon. They are going to play a match game and clear the way for Jesus by getting rid of all the bees and locust in the way. In order to clear the way they must turn over two cards that match. When they make a match they will pick up the cards and keep them to get them out of the way. Before class you will need to print out the honeybee and locust cards. You can make this game as easy or as hard as you would like. Please see the above website for the card pattern sheets and detailed instructions.
Page5 Activity Ideas Continued Choose One Grades K-2 - continued Go to the Jordan River See: Preschool Activities Go to the Jordan River This activity is for younger primary class children. You will need masking tape or blue crape paper and a few towels for this activity. Take masking tape or crape paper and make two parallel lines about twelve feet long and two feet apart. The space between the lines will represent the Jordan River. Have all the children stand on one side of the river. You will all sing, "Let's Go to the Jordan River", and then all jump across (without running) to the other side of the river. Anyone who cannot jump clearly across is considered in the river. Tell them, "You found the river, come out and dry off." Then give them a towel to pretend to dry off and have them return to their seat. Next, move one line about a foot further away from the other line. Sing and jump again. Repeat this making the river wider and wider until all the children cannot jump across. Please see the above website for the song and further detailed instructions. Grades 3-5 Game: Mission Assignment See: Grade School Games Mission Assignment This drawing game and activity will help the children review and understand John the Baptist s mission and purpose. Before class you will need to print one copy of the mission statement slips and cut out each statement. You will also need to print out enough copies of the Mission selection worksheet to be able to give one to each child. You will also need card stock (thick) paper, tape and markers for this activity. Please see the above website for detailed instructions. Journal Optional Grades K-2 What special talents do you have? Draw a picture. How could you use that talent to serve God? Write about it. Grades 3-5 (Choose One) Do you have a special talent or something you really enjoy doing? How do you think you could use that talent to serve God? Write about it. Why do you think it is important to ask God to show you His plan for your life? Write about it.
Page6 Homework Ideas - Read at home with a grownup the lesson titled: Jesus is Tempted (Matthew 4:1-11). - Learn the memory verse: I have hidden your word in my heart, that I might not sin against you. --Psalm 119:11 (NLT) - Work on memorizing commandment #. - Complete the Jesus is Tempted coloring sheet as your parents read you the Sunday School Lesson. Return your coloring page for a sticker. - Ask a grown up to help you look up and find a country where there is not enough food for the people living there. Write down the name of that country. Think about what you would do if you did not have enough food to eat for a day, a month, or a year. How would you feel? Be ready to share in class. Children examined the story of John the Baptist and how he prepared the way for the Lord Jesus and baptized Him. They also explored their own talents and how they might use them to serve God, recognizing that God has plans for each one of us too. Help me learn my memory verse You are My beloved Son; in You I am well pleased. --Luke 3:22 (NKJV) Ask me 1. Why was John the Baptist special to God? 2. Why do you think God was pleased with Jesus? 3. What was the dove in the story a symbol of? Live Your Faith Think of ways that your family could use your talents collectively to bless another family or person and share God s love with them. Talk about and choose a family to bless this week and develop a plan together. After your family experience, talk about how it made you each feel to do what you did for others.
