1 Is There Hope? Anticipate God's Glory Romans 8:1-39

2 Is There Hope? Anticipate God's Glory Text: Romans 8:1-39, 1. There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 2. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. 3. For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sins, condemned sin in the flesh: 4. That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. 5. For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. 6. For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. 7. Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. 8. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. 9. But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. 10. And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. 11. But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. 12. Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh.

3 13. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall live. 14. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. 15. For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. 16. The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: 17. And if children, then heirs, heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him that we may be also glorified together. 18. For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. 19. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. 20. For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, 21. Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. 22. For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. 23. And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption. To wit, the redemption of our body. 24. For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? 25. But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. 26. Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

4 27. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. 28. And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. 29. For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. 30. Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. 31. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? 32. He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? 33. Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. 34. Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. 35. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? 36. As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. 37. Nay, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. 38. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, 39. Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

5 Introduction: I. Paul in this chapter extols the blessings and privileges of the life "in Christ!" II. Life is filled with trouble! A. Ill health. B. Death of self and loves ones. C. Bankruptcy. D. Divorce. E. Loss of employment. F. Persecution for religious convictions. III. Paul in this chapter is saying that, if we are faithful, the problems of this life are nothing when compared with the glory of the life that is to come. Commentary: Life Through the Spirit Romans 8:1, There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. I. Great unspeakable blessings are given to all those who are "in Christ!" A. Justification. Romans 3:26, To declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

6 B. Redemption. Romans 3:24, Being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus: C. Peace. Romans 5:1, Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: D. Rejoicing. Romans 5:11, And no only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement. E. Abundance of grace. Romans 5:17, For if by one man's offence death reigned by one; much more they which receive abundance of grace and of the gift of righteousness shall reign in life by one, Jesus Christ. F. Gifts of righteousness. Romans 5:17. G. Life. Romans 6:11, Likewise reckon ye also yourselves to be dead indeed unto sin, but alive unto God through Jesus Christ our Lord. H. Eternal life. Romans 6:22, But now being made free from sin, and become servants to God, ye have your fruit unto holiness, and the end everlasting life. I. Absence of condemnation. Romans 8:1, There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit. II. These blessings are only available to them who are "in Christ." A. These blessings are available only through Christ, through no one else.

7 B. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes unto the Father but by me." Romans 8:2, For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus hath made me free from the law of sin and death. I. The law, rules, regulations, commandments, purpose, standards of Christ produce life by the Holy Spirit. II. The law, rules, regulation, results of following sin is death, physical and spiritual, temporal and eternal. III. Those who follow Christ are freed from: A. the law of the devil and B. the law of Moses which no one could keep perfectly. IV. Christians are committed to obeying the will, law of Christ. A. Galatians 6:2, Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. B. Romans 1:25, Who changed the truth of God into a lie, and worshipped and served the creature more than the Creator, who is blessed for ever. C. Romans 2:8, But unto them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, D. Romans 2:12, For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without the law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law;

8 E. 1 Peter 4:17, For the time is come that judgment must begin at the house of God: and if it first begin at us, what shall the end be of them that obey not the gospel of God? F. 2 Thessalonians 1:8, 9, In flaming fire taking vengeance on them that know not God, and that obey not the gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ: Who shall be punished with everlasting destruction from the presence of the Lord, and from the glory of his power; G. Matthew 5:19, Whosoever therefore shall break one of these least commandments, and shall teach men so, he shall be called the least in the kingdom of heaven: but whosoever shall do and teach them, the same shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven. Romans 8:3, For what the law could not do, in that it was weak through the flesh, God sending his own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh and for sins, condemned sin in the flesh: I. What the law of Moses could not do because no human could keep it perfectly... II. God accomplished by and through his Son who came in the likeness of flesh to destroy and condemn sin in the flesh. A. Christ was not sinful. His body was "like human, sinful flesh." B. God's Son took our place on the cross, paid there the penalty of sin that we might be free from the devil's power. Romans 8:4, That the righteousness of the law might be fulfilled in us, who walk not after the flesh, but after the Spirit.

9 I. All of this was done that the intent of the law of Moses; that is, human salvation, might be realized in us who walk after the Spirit, not after the flesh. A. Walking after, in the way of the Spirit couples us with grace and mercy making salvation possible. B. No one can keep the will of Christ perfectly. Salvation cannot be earned even through Christ. Romans 8:5, For they that are after the flesh do mind the things of the flesh; but they that are after the Spirit the things of the Spirit. I. They who are living a "fleshly life" are concerned about fleshly, worldly, human things. II. Those who live after the Spirit are concerned about spiritual things. III. "Mind" means to concentrate on, to make a certain thing the center of one's life, to set our hearts upon. A. Philippians 2:5, Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Romans 8:6, For to be carnally minded is death; but to be spiritually minded is life and peace. I. The "mind" of the flesh leads to death. II. The "mind" of the Spirit leads to life and peace. A. Ephesians 2:1-5, And you hath he quickened, who were dead in trespasses and sins; Wherein in time past ye walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that now worketh in the children of

10 disobedience: Among whom also we all had our conversation in times past in the lusts of our flesh, fulfilling the desires of the flesh and of the mind; and were by nature the children of wrath, even as others. But God, who is rich in mercy, for his great love wherewith he loved us, Even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ, (by grace ye are saved;) Romans 8:7, Because the carnal mind is enmity against God: for it is not subject to the law of God, neither indeed can be. I. The thoughts of the human mind oriented to the ways of the world: A. are not subject to the law of God. B. are at enmity against God, enemies of God. C. are totally incompatible with God's will and cannot be reconciled with God's will. 1. Matthew 6:24, No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. II. The human mind controlled by the devil can be changed to a spiritual mind in tune with the will of God. A. Matthew 11:29, 30, Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. Romans 8:8, So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God. I. As long as a person lives in keeping with the devil and the ways of the world, he cannot please God.

11 II. Man cannot serve God and the devil. We are at the crossroads and must make our choice for heaven or hell! Romans 8:9, But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his. I. Devout Christians live in the favor of God as long as the Spirit of God, the Spirit of Christ dwells in us and guides our thoughts and actions. A. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ; that is, the Spirit of God, does not belong to God. B. Those who life in the flesh are those who do not have the Spirit of God and of Christ. C. Creation is divided into two parts (God's part and the devil's part), not three parts (God's part, the devil's part, and our part). 1. We must choose in whose kingdom we will live. 2. Matthew 7:13, 14, Enter ye in at the strait gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many there be which go in thereat: Because strait is the gate, and narrow is the way, which leadeth unto life, and few there be that find it. 3. The Ways, John Oxenham: To every man there openeth A high way and a low; And every man decideth The way his soul shall go.

12 II. The Holy Spirit dwells in the hearts and lives of devout Christians. A. 1 Corinthians 6:19, What? Know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which ye have of God, and ye are not your own? B. 1 Corinthians 3:16, Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you? C. Galatians 4:6, And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the Spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. Romans 8:10, And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness. I. If Christ is in us, A. the fleshly way of life given to sin is dead. 1. Christian service does not cancel death for the human body. 2. We all physically die as a penalty for sin. B. the spiritual way of life given to righteousness leads Christians to eternal life. II. We must have the Spirit of Christ, the mind of Christ always. A. Philippians 2:5-11, Let this mind be in you, which was also in Christ Jesus: Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death,

13 even the death of the cross. Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: That at the name of Jesus ever knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. Romans 8:11, But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you. I. If the Spirit of God that raised up Jesus from the dead dwells in us, the same Spirit will give life to our mortal bodies. II. At the resurrection the bodies of the saved will be raised to meet the Lord in the air and so shall we ever be with the Lord. A. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17, But I would not have you to be ignorant, brethren, concerning them which are asleep, that ye sorrow not, even as others which have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so them also which sleep in Jesus will God bring with him. For this we say unto you by the word of the Lord, that we which are alive and remain unto the coming of the Lord shall not prevent them which are asleep. For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord. Romans 8:12-14, Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. For if ye live after the flesh, ye shall die: but if ye through the Spirit do mortify the deeds of the body, ye shall

14 live. For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. I. We are not debtors to live after the flesh. (A major understatement, a meiosis.) A. What do we owe the wicked world? B. We are not obligated to live according to the ways of the wicked world. C. Those who live according to the world die spiritually. II. We are debtors to extinguish the influences of the wicked world and to live according to the will of the Spirit of God. A. To be led by the Spirit of God makes us sons of God. B. Those led by the Spirit of God will live spiritually. Romans 8:15, For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father. I. The spirit of bondage refers to the time of service to the devil, a time of fear of the punishment for sin in this life and of eternal punishment in the world to come. II. We have received the spirit of adoption from God whom we address as Abba, Father. (Abba is the Aramaic equivalent of father.) A. Christians here are referenced as the adopted children of a loving father.

15 B. If God s children will be faithful to God and love him they will have nothing to fear. Romans 8:16, 17, The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs, heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him that we may be also glorified together. I. God s Holy Spirit bears witness with our spirit that we are the children of God. A. If we are children of God we are. 1. heirs of God. 2. joint-heirs with Christ. 3. Galatians 4:6, 7, And because ye are sons, God hath sent forth the spirit of his Son into your hearts, crying, Abba, Father. B. If we are willing to suffer with God we may also be glorified with Christ. 1. God s promises are conditional. 2. Being glorified with Christ hinges on our being willing to suffer with him. a. Matthew 16:24-26, Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: and whosoever will lose his life for my sake shall find it.

16 b. Acts 20:23,... the Holy Ghost witnesseth in every city, saying that bonds and afflictions abide me. Future Glory Romans 8:18, For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. I. Paul strongly affirmed that the sufferings of this present time, even all the persecutions suffered by Paul... II. are not worthy to be compared with the glory God has in store for those who serve him well. Romans 8:19, For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God. I. All of creation groans under the afflictions of this world caused by sin. A. Creation (ktisis) defined: 1. Mark 16:15, And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. 2. Colossians 1:23, If ye continue in the faith grounded and settled, and be not moved away from the hope of the gospel, which ye have heard, and which was preached to every creature which is under heaven; whereof I Paul am made a minister; II. All of creation waits for the revealing of the sons of God, the sons of God to be revealed.

17 A. At the resurrection/second coming of Christ the glorified bodies of the sons of God will be revealed. B. 1 John 3:1, 2, Behold, what manner of love the Father hath bestowed upon us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knoweth us not, because it knew him not. Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. Romans 8:20, For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, I. The creation was subjected to vanity; that is, wretchedness, sufferings and futilities of mortal life in a state of separation from God. II. This subjection was not voluntary, but was imposed by God. A. not of its own will can be rendered not due to any act of its own. B. Once man sinned God imposed the penalty. (Reference the case of Adam and Eve after they sinned.) III. This very subjection is a basis of hope. A. God could have destroyed all his creation because of their sins. B. In his mercy and wisdom God provided a way for man s redemption. IV. One of the purposes of the creation was to provide a place for people to dwell in harmony with God. Sin disrupted this harmony, and creation was subjected to frustration, since its purpose is not being realized. Whether we take man as the one who subjected the creation to

18 frustration (by his sin) or God (in response to sin) the effect is the same. But there is hope. (The NIV Standard Lesson Commentary, , p. 278.) Romans 8:21, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God. I. The creation will be delivered from the bondage of corruption. A. This is a reference to God s plan of redemption for fallen mankind. B. The bondage of corruption is a description of fallen mankind. II. The creation will be delivered into the liberty of the glory of the children of God. A. This speaks of all the blessings of God upon his faithful children made available through his Son Jesus Christ. Romans 8:22, For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. I. As a woman groaning in pain at child birth, the people of earth are in great suffering due to the burdens of sin. II. Humans do not want to suffer, but we are unable to avoid it on earth. A. Millions are on hospital beds. B. All are on their way to the cemetery C. Our prisons are full.

19 D. Wars and rumors of wars abound Romans 8:23, And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption. To wit, the redemption of our body. I. We Christians are not immune, exempted from the sufferings common to mankind. II. We who have the first fruits of the Spirit long for our redemption from the troubles of this world which will come when our bodies are resurrected to glory. A. At that time our troubles will be over! B. Isaiah 35:10, And the ransomed of the Lord shall return, and come to Zion with songs and everlasting joy upon their heads: they shall obtain joy and gladness, and sorrow and sighing shall flee away. Romans 8:24, For we are saved by hope: but hope that is seen is not hope: for what a man seeth, why doth he yet hope for? I. Paul is focusing on the believer s hope of salvation. A. We hope for an end to suffering and the beginning of eternal glory. B. Paul urges us to be patient, steadfast in our Christian service that we may lay hold on eternal life. C. We hope for eternal glory. Obviously we do not already have it!

20 D. If we had eternal glory now in fact we would not now hope for it. E. No one hopes for what he already has in hand! Romans 8:25, But if we hope for that we see not, then do we with patience wait for it. I. We patiently wait in hope for the glory we expect in the world to come. A. In our Hurry up and rush world, I want it yesterday society, patience is a rarity. B. Christians, among other things, were to face the fury of Roman persecution patiently. C. The Roman Christians were to stay the course, persevere, be steadfast, unmovable, PATIENT! II. In many parts of the world religious persecution abounds. We are to face suffering with a steadfast patience born of hope! Romans 8:26, 27, Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God. I. How would we survive in a world without hope? II. How would we survive in a world without help?

21 A. The Holy Spirit helps us in our times and conditions of weakness. III. We do not really know what to pray for in our times of trouble, but the Holy Spirit intercedes for us. A. The Holy Spirit speaks to the Father with groans born of pain and concern when words cannot express our feelings, emotions and needs. B. The Holy Spirit searches our minds, hearts and speaks to God on our behalf. C. The Holy Spirit always asks that God s will be done in our affairs. D. The Spirit always asks in keeping with God s will. IV. Jesus is our intercessor before God. A. Romans 8:34, Who is he that condemneth? It is Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. B. 1 Timothy 2:5, 6, Remember ye not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now ye know what withholdeth that he might be revealed in his time. V. Christians are definitely not alone! VI. God searches the hearts of men and also well knows the mind of the Spirit and understands even when communication is by groans instead of words.

22 More Than Conquerors Romans 8:28, And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose. I. In all our troubles we can rest assured that God works for the good of those: A. who love him. 1. John 14:15, 21, If ye love me, keep my commandments. He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him John 6, And this is love, that we walk after his commandments. This is the commandment, That, as ye have heard from the beginning, ye should walk in it John 5:3, For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments: and his commandments are not grievous. B. who have been called (by the Gospel) according to his purpose Thessalonians 2:14, Whereunto he called you by our gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. C. God has taken even the martyrdom of saints and turned it into good for his cause. II. Does God work for the good of those who do not love him and are not called according to his purpose?

23 Romans 8:29, For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. I. God in his absolute foreknowledge knew who would believe in his Son and faithfully serve him. A. These he foreordained to be conformed to the image of his Son, to be like his Son in righteousness. 1. God knew ahead of time all that would happen. 2. God wills that we should be like his Son. B. This would make Christ the firstborn of many brethren. All Christians are siblings of Jesus Christ, our elder brother. Romans 8:30, Moreover whom he did predestinate, them he also called: and whom he called, them he also justified: and whom he justified, them he also glorified. I. Whom God... A. foreordained he called. B. called he justified. C. justified he glorified. II. God s eternal purpose from times eternal specified that his Son would lead an innumerable redeemed host of earth s population to glory. (Coffman, Romans, pp. 304, 305.)

24 A. God foreordained that those who obey the gospel and are thereby justified will be eternally glorified. B. Predestination/foreordination does not contradict man s free will! Romans 8:31, What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us? I. The conclusion to the matter is, If God is for us, no one can succeed against us. A. God, in all the Christians troubles and adversities, is our helper, protector and benefactor. B. God is certainly much more than a casual observer of the affairs of men. C. Philippians 2:13, For it is God which worketh in you both to will and to do of his good pleasure. Romans 8:32, He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things? I. God... A. gave his only begotten Son for our salvation. B. will certainly, having given his Son for us, give us through Jesus freely all blessings we need here and hereafter in regard to spiritual support, help in persecution and in eternal glory. Romans 8:33, 34, Who shall lay any thing to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth. Who is he that condemneth? It is

25 Christ that died, yea rather, that is risen again, who is even at the right hand of God, who also maketh intercession for us. I. Who will be able to make a charge against, persecute God s elect? Who as judge will be able to condemn Christians? A. God justifies! Who can contradict God and successfully condemn the faithful? God will not condemn the faithful. B. Christ died and, more especially, was raised from the dead. He now is at God s right hand making intercession for us. Christ will not condemn the faithful. C. Christians have the full support of both God the Father and God the Son. II. Election: A. God votes for our salvation. B. Satan votes for our condemnation. C. We cast the deciding vote! Romans 8:35, 36, Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written, For thy sake we are killed all the day long; we are accounted as sheep for the slaughter. I. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? A. tribulation B. anguish

26 C. persecution D. famine E. nakedness F. peril G. sword H. none of the above. II. Those who are killed all day long and are regarded as sheep to the slaughter can be sure of one thing: God loves them no matter what! A. Psalm 44:22, Yea, for thy sake are we killed all the day long; we are counted as sheep for the slaughter. III. Even if we lapse into sin God still loves us. Not everyone God loves will go to heaven. A. Revelation 2:4, Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee because thou hast left thy first love. B. Hebrews 10:26-31, For if we sin willfully after that we have received the knowledge of the truth, there remaineth no more sacrifice for sins, But a certain fearful looking for of judgment and fiery indignation, which shall devour the adversaries. He that despised Moses law died without mercy under two or three witnesses: Of how much sorer punishment, suppose ye, shall he be thought worthy, who hath trodden under foot the Son of God, and hath counted the blood of the covenant, wherewith he was sanctified, an unholy thing, and hath done despite unto the Spirit of grace? For we know him that hath said, Vengeance belongeth unto me, I will recompense, saith

27 the Lord. And again, The Lord shall judge his people. It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God. Romans 8:37-39, Nay, in all these things, we are more than conquerors through him that loved us. For I am persuaded, that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor powers, nor things present, nor things to come, Nor height, nor depth, nor any other creature, shall be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. I. In whatever the devil uses to oppose our Christian devotion, we are more than conquerors. II. Paul was persuaded that nothing could separate faithful Christians form the love of God in Christ Jesus our Lord, not... A. death (execution) B. life (hard life) C. angels (Satan s, Matthew 25:41, Then shall he say also unto them on the left hand. Depart from me, ye cursed, into everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels: ( angels and demons. ) NIV D. principalities (rulers) E. things present F. things to come G. powers (false miracles) H. height (of prosperity)

28 I. depths (of misery) J. any other creature. III. All of the calamities mentioned here were suffered by Paul himself. A. Christians are not exempt to persecution nor life s vicissitudes. B. 2 Corinthians 11:23-29, Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool) I am more; in labors more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft. Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one. Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep; In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren; In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness. Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches. Who is weak, and I am not weak? Who is offended, and I burn not? Conclusion: I. We cannot imagine the wondrous glory that awaits the righteous in the world to come! A. 1 John 3:2, Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. B. John 14:1-3, Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place

29 for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also. C. Revelation 2:7, He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the tree of life, which is in the midst of the paradise of God. D. Revelation 22:1-3, And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding out of the throne of God and of the Lamb. In the midst of the street of it, and on either side of the river, was there the tree of life, which bare twelve manner of fruits, and yielded her fruit every month: and the leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations. And there shall be no more curse; but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him: II. Come what may, let us stay the course! Our destination is heaven!
