2 Katholisch-Soziales Institut Conference center and a place of dialog With its view of Bad Honnef, the Nice of the Rhine, and only a few minutes walk from the city, the innovative Catholic Social Institute is located idyllically between the Rhine and the mountain rage of the Siebengebirge. With its successfully integration of old and new building styles, the architecture impressively embodies progress and innovation: A complex of modern an airy buildings with plenty of rooms for conferences, courses and seminars. The barriers in Europe have disappeared. We are free to come and go as we please, differences in the living conditions in the East and West are equalizing faster than expected, and being on a par in everyday life makes it easy to feel at home in many places. But below the surface Europe remains a complex, disrupted entity. The arguments surrounding the European constitution, the failed referendums in France and the Netherlands have alerted us to this fact. Apparently, the idea of Europe has lost its sheen. All the more we need ideas for Europe. Which values keep our continent together? Are we (still) based on a Christian foundation? How do other countries cope with the challenges of globalization and demographic change? And how come each country suggests a different solution for many pressing ethical problems from embryo protection to euthanasia, from dealing with migrants to fighting poverty. These are the questions we want to discuss during this convention. It will bring experts from the original community of six and the new member states together and offer the opportunity to become acquainted with mentalities and positions that are rather unknown to us in Germany. As an educational convention we encourage exploring other ways of thinking and thereby enriching our typically German debates.
