PASTOR S NOTES On Monday evening of this week, we will celebrate our Advent Reconciliation Service. Aside from taking a deep breath in the midst of decorating for Christmas and shopping for it, Advent is an essential time to pause and reflect on the immeasurable, humbling gift of God s unconditional love for all, the Incarnation. Asking forgiveness for whatever it is in my life that turns me away from this treasure enables me to open my soul and fill it once again with God s grace. Come and pray with companions on the journey, receiving the healing power of Jesus forgiveness and love at 7:00 pm on Monday. Our Catechumen and Candidates for the Rite of Christian Initiation R.C.I.A were reflecting on the mass recently and in the midst of gratitude for the richness of the Eucharist, we realized that there are two profoundly important parts of it that we don t always think about the beginning and the end. Getting to church a minute or so before we start gives me a chance to catch my breath, clear my mind and focus on this, the most important prayer we have as a community. And I, we all, become an integral part of the ritual of following the cross, being part of the entrance procession, reminding us that our desire and most of our efforts are to live Jesus way of life with others in a community of faith. We may not be the Mormon Tabernacle Choir (our own choirs help us a lot!) but our collective singing voices in the entrance hymn is a beautiful greeting to our God and to each other. Not something to miss. And I love Greg Pierce s idea that the most important sign in the church is the exit sign, not because it means that the mass is over, but as Deacon Andy Allison says at the recessional, Our mass is complete. Now our mission begins. To not be around for the final blessing and the ritual of the recession/going forth is like forgetting to get gas as I begin my trip. As we began, so we continue, following the cross, living Jesus way of life, being blessed for our mission, living it together. Besides, taking time in church after mass, I can find out what s going on in the neighborhood! If the truth be told, it is a challenge for me to get to church early, as you can see me rushing down the aisle to get in line! But as you also know, it does make a difference. This weekend we jump into the annual Giving Tree project that we have, getting Christmas gifts for members of our sharing parish, St. Agatha. Our High School students are helping us to do this. Please take a tag and bring a smile and warm the heart of a fellow pilgrim at St. Agatha. A warm and grateful welcome to Dr. Kate Devries who has joined our staff as the Director of Pastoral Ministries. I believe most of you already know her, as she helps Allen Sterwalt in our music ministry, playing the guitar and leading song at just about every mass! More information about Kate is in this bulletin and she will introduce herself formally at the beginning of January. I m excited that you will welcome her in her new role in our faith community. We continue to move from the preparation phase of our Capital Campaign towards the initiation of it. There is some wonderful news about a most generous bequest which will be directed to the Campaign. Details about it are in this bulletin, in the section, Our Capital Campaign. Don t forget about the Vatican Survey in preparation for the Synod on the Family to be held next fall: survey/. How about this for a Christmas gift (published in U.K. papers)?: FREE PUPPIES. Mother is a Kennel Club registered German Shepherd. Father is a Super Dog, able to leap tall fences in a single bound. And when a Teacher asked Winnie to name one important thing we have today that we didn t have ten years ago, she brilliantly responded: ME! Happy and Holy Advent. SCRIPTURE REFLECTION Let s dream. Isaiah uses some images and metaphors in today s first reading that has us dreaming. Imagine...the wolf shall be a guest of the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid; the calf and the young lion shall browse together, with a little child to guide them. The cow and the bear shall be neighbors, together their young shall rest; the lion shall eat hay like the ox. The baby shall play by the cobra s den, and the child lay his hand on the adder s lair. Each of these images/metaphors is in complete opposition to what our world has come to know and understand. Each of these images/metaphors has us contrasting and dreaming about our own experiences and our world s experiences. We live with many oppositions: black and white; men and women; young and old; rich and poor, good and bad; accepted and marginalized; winners and losers; normal and abnormal; crosses on churches, crescents on mosques, menorahs on temples; war and peace. Each of these oppositions is a challenge to us and for us in our dreaming. The challenge has us making choices. The choices will either have us breaking down barriers or adding another brick to the walls of opposition. Our dreaming is affected by how we confront the challenges and by which choices we make. Isaiah envisions a peaceable kingdom; a kingdom with a ruler who sees the world through God s eyes and will rule with justice and mercy. Advent finds us waiting for Isaiah s prophecy to be fulfilled in the coming of Jesus. Isaiah s prophecy has us dreaming of the way the world can be. Our dream is God s reality. Let s dream, accept the challenge, and choose wisely so that God s reality will be fulfilled.

ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE 2013 In this time of Thanksgiving, we are very grateful for a kindness that the parish has received. Earlier this year, we were notified of a most generous bequest given to us after the passing of one of our dear parishioners. St. Francis Xavier has already received $500,000 of this bequest and, once the estate is settled, we estimate the total bequest will be approximately $700,000. This money will be earmarked as part of our upcoming capital campaign. By allocating this wonderful gift to the campaign, everyone will share in the benefits it will generate for generations to come. ADVENT RECONCILIATION Please join us as we celebrate the Advent Sacrament of Reconciliation on Monday, December 9 at 7:00 p.m. in Church. The Advent Season of Repentance and Renewal is the most appropriate time for Catholics to confess sin and celebrate absolution. Christmas Eve 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in Church are Masses for which tickets have been distributed Christmas Eve 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse Chapel Christmas Eve in Church 7:00 p.m. Midnight Mass in Church preceded by Christmas Carols at 11:30 p.m. Christmas Day in Church 7:30 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. 12:00 Noon THE CHRISTMAS WAFER The Christmas Wafer (also known as Oplatki ) will be available in the Rectory during office hours Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m., Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Sunday between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. If you would like to make a free will offering it would be appreciated. LEAVE A LEGACY We are grateful for the generous support that you give to St. Francis through your weekly contributions. Have you considered providing for the continuation of that support by including the parish in your Will? Bequests given to the parish through Wills are for the sole use of St. Francis Xavier Parish. To include the parish in your Will, the correct language is: I give (a percentage or amount) to the Catholic Bishop of Chicago A Corporation Sole, for the sole benefit of St. Francis Xavier Parish, LaGrange. Thanks for giving consideration to leaving a legacy! The word Bethlehem means the house of bread. The breaking of the bread is a sign of charity, unity and friendship. Religious family customs bring the truths of faith into the home. One of these beautiful Christmas Eve customs is the Christmas Wafer. The thin wafer bearing the Christmas characters is broken by the head of the family and distributed to each member. With a simple prayer for God s grace and the welfare of all members of the family, those present as well as those who are absent, the head of the house breaks the wafer and distributes it, one piece to each person at the table. While doing so, each member of the family is kissed and wished a joyful feast. Members then greet one another in the same way. The spiritual lesson in this age old custom is that the unity of the family is grounded in God s love for us. May you experience unity and love through this simple celebration.

Advent Greetings! My name is Kate DeVries, and I am delighted to join the staff of St. Francis Xavier Parish as the Director of Pastoral Ministries. You may have heard me play guitar or cantor on Sunday mornings. If we have not yet had the privilege of meeting, I sincerely hope we connect soon. I will be available after many of our weekend masses in the upcoming weeks and months. My responsibilities in this newly created position include supporting the great work of our various parish ministries, addressing specific needs through pastoral care and adult faith formation, and assisting with such initiatives as our capital campaign and the continuing implementation of our prophetic plan. Any wisdom you can share is most welcome. Feel free to catch me after mass, send an kdevries@sfxlg.org, or call me at SFX, If we can have an extended conversation, I would be honored to meet with you. As for my background, I am a native Chicagoan, and have been an active parishioner of St. Francis Xavier Parish for the past 7 years. After obtaining my master s degree in special education from NIU, I spent 5 wonderful years teaching high school and junior high students with severe behavior disorders and learning disabilities. I then was invited to work in the Young Adult Ministry Office of the Arch. of Chicago, and took a one year leave of absence from teaching (which lasted nearly 25 years!). Along the way, I obtained my doctorate in ministry from Catholic Theological Union with a concentration in liturgy and spirituality. I have extensive experience teaching the Catholic faith, organizing events, leading workshops, presiding at prayer services, and directing retreats. It has all been a joy. As for what feeds my soul it s ministry, prayer, music, being with children and teaching. My free time is spent with family members and friends, studying classical guitar, volunteering at Lurie Children s Hospital, and exercising. During this season of Advent, as we await the coming of Christ into our lives anew, there is so much for which to be grateful. Thank you for your role in this community of faith, and in advance, thank you for your support of all that lies ahead. I look forward to working with you in this new position. We truly are on a Journey of Grace. Together we can indeed make a difference. May your Advent season and all whose lives you touch be richly blessed. 6 TAIZÉ PRAYER St. Francis Xavier and Grace Lutheran WILLIAM FERRIS CHORALE Artist in Residence at Loyola University Paul French, Music Director All are invited to our Taizé Evening Prayer Friday, December 13 7:30 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier CHRISTMAS MYSTERY CHRISTMAS MIRTH Start the season on a spiritual high! Soaring Renaissance polyphony and the mystical music of American composer Morten Lauridsen are blended with a sassy assortment of familiar carols for our annual Christmas concert proclaimed by the Chicago Tribune as a holiday tradition not to be tampered with. Taizé Prayer is contemplative and most importantly communal, combining simple repetitive melodies that are sung by all, prayerful silence, scripture reading and intercessory prayer. This prayer can promote a kind to inner unity of person, allowing the spirit to be more open and attentive to what is essential. It is our hope that you will join us, especially at this time when our world is much in need of prayer. For more information on our efforts, please call: The holidays can mean festivities and family gatherings. But for families already dealing with domestic abuse, the holidays and periods of economic stress may trigger abuse. Domestic abuse is often linked to power and control. During the holidays, a partner might want to spend more time with their family or be around other people, and that can be very threatening for the partner who is the abuser who feels threatened or powerless in a relationship. During the holiday season, people are motivated to keep the status quo. People don't want to leave their families or break up their families in the middle of the holidays. It's actually after the holidays end in January and February that there is a greater increase in the reports of abuse. Let us pray for those in abusive relationships and offer a prayer of hope: A Prayer for Hope God, we are frightened and to you alone we cry out for mercy mercy and grace amazing grace, grace that is able to supply all our needs. We stand humbly at the door of your mercy and knock. You have promised to be always close to our heart s door and we open it wide to you now. Please come in, transform the darkness with your light, fill the void with your presence, offer us a refuge, a safe place to hide take our mustard seed of faith and make it bloom so that all may know that you are God. Call 911 if you feel you are in immediate danger. If you or someone you know needs help, call a 24 hour hotline: Pillars: Family Shelter Services: National Domestic Violence Hotline: (SAFE)

Those that have been baptized were welcomed as Candidates for full Communion with the Catholic Church. By celebrating this Rite, our inquirers officially and publically declared their intention to enter into a formal relationship with the Catholic Church. Children s Liturgy of the Word offers the children an experience to hear the scripture in words that they can understand. Here at St. Francis we are fortunate and proud to have adult volunteers and Presiders of Liturgy who journey with our children so that they can experience the Word of the Lord with a message that is relevant and fitting for them. Our Saturday evening 5:00 p.m. Mass offers the opportunity for children in Grades Kindergarten Fourth to experience hearing and reflecting on the Word of the Lord in a way that is an empowering experience. Children in these grades are invited to follow their Reflectors of the Word to a prayer space away from the gathered assembly to hear the Scriptures in words they can understand. Children s Liturgy of the Word takes place in church whenever the children s choirs lead us in song/prayer. The Scriptures we hear will then be taken from the Children s Lectionary and the homily will be given in a way that children are able to relate to a little more readily. The children in Grades K 4 will go to their prayer space on the Saturdays that the choirs are not singing. Here is the tentative schedule: December 14 SF Choristers January 4 Cherub Choir and January 11 SF Choristers February 1 Cherub Choir and February 8 SF Choristers March 15 SF Choristers and March 22 Cherub Choir April 12 SF Choristers (Palm Sunday Weekend regular readings) April 26 SF Choristers Children in Grades K 4 will be invited to join their Reflectors in a prayer space away from the adults and to hear The Word of The Lord in words they can better understand on the following Saturdays (subject to change): December 21; January 18, 25; February 15, 22; March 1, 8 and April 5 You can call and direct your questions to: Terri Simeoni, RE Coordinator or Allen Sterwalt, Director of Music

QUEST SPEAKER EVENT The next Quest Speaker Event will be held this Sunday, December 8 at 4:30pm in the Church. We will be hosting Peggy Ratke, from Family Shelter Services presenting the Green Dot Strategy for violence prevention. The Green Dot Program was developed to help individuals find safe ways to intervene in situations characterized by partner violence, violence against children, bullying, stalking and other forms of abuse. Green Dot is based on the premise that the majority of people are non violent and can take part in reducing the violence perpetrated by the few who are violent. Training people how to get past the obstacles to intervening is at the core of this revolutionary approach to violence first developed at the University of Kentucky. The Green Dot Strategy is a comprehensive approach to violence prevention that capitalizes on the power of peer and cultural influence. Informed by social change theory, this program targets all community members as potential agents of social change. It seeks to engage them through awareness, education, and skills practice, resulting in the ultimate reduction of violence. Quest teens will be challenged to incorporate Gospel teaching into how they respond to bullying and other forms of violence in their lives utilizing Green Dot principles. WINTER RETREAT HIDDEN TREASURE! St. Francis Xavier and St. Cletus are hosting a Freshmen/Sophomore Winter Retreat Hidden Treasure! Hidden Treasure is led by High School Juniors and Seniors eager to share their faith through the parables. Retreatants can expect a weekend of prayer, games, skits, music, and FUN! This weekend features the musical and speaking talents of Jon Pressimone. Jon is eager to share his faith through music and fun! Together with your teen, please consider if this might be a good opportunity to grow in faith and friendship with their peers. Space is limited, so it would be a good idea to register sooner rather than later. Our registration deadline is December 15. Registration forms are available on the parish website and at the rectory. THE GIVING TREE Many years ago, the O Brien Family began the Giving Tree here at SFX. Since then, Diane O Brien lost her battle with breast cancer. In her memory, the Giving Tree has been named The Diane O Brien Giving Tree. The Giving Tree allows us to help Christmas happen for approximately 300 individuals, along with our Sharing Parish, St. Agatha. Each person whose name has been sent to us receives two gifts. This adds up to 600 tags to be distributed and gifts returned. Many inner city families are helped by the outreach of St. Agatha s Parish. Their need is great, as is the joy we receive from sharing with them at Christmas. Help us to share the joy of the season with our friends at St. Agatha s by taking a tag this weekend, December 7 8. Affix the tag to the wrapped gift you purchased and return it next weekend December BEFORE THE START of the Noon Mass. Once again, the work for this parish project is a service provided by the Teens in QUEST. Please call Emily Brabham at x304 with any questions.

Retired Men s Group Christmas Luncheon LaGrange Country Club Wednesday, December 18 12:15 pm CHEER (Cash bar 11:30 am) CHEER PLEASE TAKE NOTE... SPECIAL CIRCUMSTANCES FOR RECEIVING THE EUCHARIST The Catholic Church has historically recognized the intimate relationship of wheat hosts and wine as matter for the Eucharist. However, if you have Celiac Sprue Disease or a family member suffers from a gluten intolerance or if you are alcohol intolerant, receiving the Eucharist is lifeinvolving in seriously challenging ways. The logistics or manner of accommodating lay persons with gluten or wine intolerance in a parish setting during the Liturgy of the Eucharist is left to the afflicated party and the pastor to decide the best way during Mass for the afflicted party to safely receive the Precious Body or the Precious Blood. If you or a member of your family is affected by this circumstance, please contact our pastor, Fr. John Hoffman, to discuss the particulars of your situation. Fr. John can be reached by calling the Rectory Office at In December of 2000, parishioner Dan Bagley lost his battle to cancer. While undergoing chemotherapy, Dan would often sit in the sacristy where he could hear the mass on the PA system and be away from the crowd to avoid being around excessive exposure to infections. After Dan s death, his family and friends purchased a new chair for our sacristy for use by those whose chemo might otherwise keep them away. As a reminder to all, especially new parishioners, anyone undergoing chemotherapy is welcome to make use of the The Dan Bagley Chair while attending mass. Or, if you have some other medical need for which the chair may help, you are welcome to use it. Also, be aware that the parish is equipped with special hearing devices for those who need hearing assistance. Those devices can be found in the priests sacristy. For those who may be experiencing low blood sugar due to diabetes or other health issues, orange juice is located in the small refrigerator in the priests sacristy. Anyone with a physical challenge is encouraged to sit in the east transept (Spring Avenue side) near the exit door. A Eucharistic minister will bring communion to you, rather than have you approach the altar.

FOOD COLLECTION FOR MARILLAC HOUSE On Sunday, December 29, non perishable food donations will be collected for Marillac House. Donations can be left at the side trancepts in church. There will be no more harm or ruin on all my holy mountain; for the earth shall be filled with knowledge of the Lord. Isaiah 11:5 Solar power is here and it isn t just environmentalists saying it anymore. A research division of Citigroup, the massive multinational bank that probably doesn t share Greenpeace s worldview on many issues, does agree with us on one point: solar energy is poised to explode in the U.S. Citi Research published the report, Rising Sun: Implications for U.S. Utilities, in August it slipped under the media radar, which is unfortunate because the analysis is phenomenal and offers great hope for the clean energy revolution here in the U.S. here are a few of the key points it makes: 1) Solar is growing extremely fast in the U.S. 2) That growth is driven almost entirely by pure economics, not environmental concerns. 3) The big utilities can t seem to get either of the above two points through their skulls yet. 4) Solar financing is the next political frontier to watch in the U.S. solar energy revolution reaching full speed/ Advent Imagery: Experiencing the Season through Symbol and Ritual On Wednesday, December 11 from 9:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., Facilitator, David F. Schimmel, M.Div., M.A. will discuss the Advent scriptures and paint the liturgical season with varied images that converge into a single motif. Whether contemplating wild and domesticated animals, the wilderness and farmland, pregnancy and unfolding family stories, or justice from judges and neighbors, the vision is interconnectedness, and the challenge is to nurture mutual relationships. The time together will explore the symbols of and ritualize the longing for walking in God s paths. The cost is $30. All programs are held at The Well Spirituality Center, located at The Congregation of St. Joseph, 1515 West Ogden Avenue in LaGrange Park. To learn more about The Well s programs or to register, please call or thewell@csjoseph.org. Interfaith Power and Light The mission of Interfaith Power and Light is to be faithful stewards of creation by responding to global warming through the promotion of energy conservation, energy efficiency, and renewable energy. This campaign intends to protect the earth s ecosystems, safeguard the health of all creation, and ensure sufficient, sustainable energy for all. In addition to practicing energy stewardship in our facilities, IPL brings the voice of the faith community into the policy making arena. We know that our actions alone cannot stem the tide of climate change we need to enact public policies to advance clean energy and to limit carbon pollution. IPL is working to support policy change at the local, state, and national levels. To learn about IPL in your state and to be connected with opportunities to conserve energy go to: The St. Francis Xavier Peace and Justice Committee will meet on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the rectory.
