PASTOR S NOTES SCRIPTURE REFLECTION I hope you all had a good Thanksgiving. I didn t break any dishes I was washing, so I hope I get invited back next year. And welcome home to the students and travelers who are with us this weekend. Hope you have a good visit. It is Advent again, the beginning of our Liturgical Year. A time of waiting, anticipation of remembering the birth of the Son of God, Jesus the Christ, born of Mary. Each year it seems to become more of a challenge to focus on the coming of the Christmas Season, celebrating the Incarnation, but there is nothing more important than God s love being made human in Jesus, there is no greater gift. Hopefully we will all have a chance to at least express gratitude to our God for the life, the love and the hope given to each of us. May we be a sign of this gift to others. Today we welcome our new Rite of Christian Initiation catechumen and candidates, Dawn Zimmermann, Julie Lanclos Hoover, Julie Denson, Brian Riegler, Chuck Wittleder, Mark Bowie and Tim Hejna. They will be formally welcomed at the 9 am mass. Please say hello to them if you see them and pray for them on their spiritual journey as they prepare to become members of our church. Take a look inside this bulletin especially for the following: Service Day for the Day School this Friday, Dec. 6. This is done as the action part of their curriculum for the year and as part of giving witness to the Gospel. Advent Reconciliation Monday, Dec 9, 7 pm. Come and celebrate the unconditional love that God has for all of us. Calling All Bakers this is a program of awareness of the incarcerated men in the North Lawndale Adult Transition Center and a chance to bake Cookies for them. Have you ever noticed a dancer, when they are making those 360 whirling motions again and again and again. Each time they get to a certain place, their head stops briefly before making the next revolution. No matter how often they go around, their head stops at that one place. I am sure there is a name for that, but whatever it is called, they are looking at a starting point and placing themselves with a perspective in relation to everything else around them. This is where I am and this is where I begin again, thinks the dancer. In much the same way, Advent prepares ourselves for Christmas as we become aware again of our beginning our starting point. This is where I begin again. It comes again and again, year after year as we live our lives. Advent is a time when we remember (and sometimes discover) who we are. It s like turning on a light when we were in darkness. Oh here is where I am. I would have fallen or stubbed my toe or at the very least not seen the beautiful world that I live in. It is seen as a perspective of the world around us, our relationship to family, to others, to creation, to ourselves, to God. Sometimes in the craziness of life, we can forget or be blinded to what is important and who should be our priorities. Why is coming home for Christmas so important? It helps us connect with who we are as individuals and as a people of faith. It helps us connect with a God who loves us so much, and reveals to us that being creator was not enough. God wanted to be part of our lives. It was the only way for us to find our way home. Today s scripture sets the stage for this new season. Be ready, watch for the light. It will reveal God s love for us, his promise. It will reveal a Kingdom of hope and of peace. We will see the darkness for what it is and we will be led to the light by the light. Be vigilant, don t give up. The journey will not always be easy. Just set your sights on the coming of the Lord. Come, Lord Jesus. There are several excellent programs at the WELL just west on Ogden Ave. Tank a look at them and take advantage of them if you can. Here s a quip from a student to the Teacher who asked: John, why are you doing your math multiplication on the floor? You told me to do it without using tables.

ST. FRANCIS XAVIER CHRISTMAS MASS SCHEDULE 2013 Christmas Eve 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. in Church are Masses for which tickets have been distributed Christmas Eve 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. at Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse Chapel Christmas Eve in Church 7:00 p.m. Midnight Mass in Church preceded by Christmas Carols at 11:30 p.m. Christmas Day in Church 7:30 a.m. 9:00 a.m. 10:30 a.m. 12:00 Noon THE CHRISTMAS WAFER The Christmas Wafer (also known as Oplatki ) will be available in the Rectory during office hours Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. until 8:30 p.m., Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and on Sunday between 9:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. The word Bethlehem means the house of bread. The breaking of the bread is a sign of charity, unity and friendship. Religious family customs bring the truths of faith into the home. One of these beautiful Christmas Eve customs is the Christmas Wafer. The thin wafer bearing the Christmas characters is broken by the head of the family and distributed to each member. With a simple prayer for God s grace and the welfare of all members of the family, those present as well as those who are absent, the head of the house breaks the wafer and distributes it, one piece to each person at the table. While doing so, each member of the family is kissed and wished a joyful feast. Members then greet one another in the same way. The spiritual lesson in this age old custom is that the unity of the family is grounded in God s love for us. May you experience unity and love through this simple celebration. TAIZÉ PRAYER St. Francis Xavier and Grace Lutheran All are invited to our Taizé Evening Prayer Friday, December 13 7:30 p.m. at St. Francis Xavier Taizé Prayer is contemplative and most importantly communal, combining simple repetitive melodies that are sung by all, prayerful silence, scripture reading and intercessory prayer. This prayer can promote a kind to inner unity of person, allowing the spirit to be more open and attentive to what is essential. It is our hope that you will join us, especially at this time when our world is much in need of prayer. LEAVE A LEGACY We are grateful for the generous support that you give to St. Francis through your weekly contributions. Have you considered providing for the continuation of that support by including the parish in your Will? Bequests given to the parish through Wills are for the sole use of St. Francis Xavier Parish. To include the parish in your Will, the correct language is: I give (a percentage or amount) to the Catholic Bishop of Chicago A Corporation Sole, for the sole benefit of St. Francis Xavier Parish, LaGrange. Thanks for giving consideration to leaving a legacy! LOST EYE GLASSES We have a number of lost eyeglasses on the counter of the priest s sacristy. If you have lost a pair please check to claim them. 5 CHRISTMAS EVE MASS SCHEDULE FOR CHILDREN This year, on Christmas Eve, we will once again celebrate two liturgies that are planned for children. These liturgies will be at 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. As it has been necessary over the last several years, tickets will be issued to parishioners for these two masses. These tickets will be available in church on the Monday evening after Thanksgiving. See below for specifics on how tickets will be distributed. The procedure for picking up tickets for the 3:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. Children s Masses on Christmas Eve follows: Your Parish Finances We will report on collections for November 24 in next week s bulletin. Thank you for your support! We hope that you are enjoying the start of the holidays! On Monday, December 2 1. Doors of church will open at 5:30 p.m. 2. Know which mass you will be picking up tickets for and enter the door that is marked with that time. 3. You will be given a number as you enter. Numbers will be given out in numerical order. You will be asked to be seated in the order that you come in, beginning with the last row. 4. A drawing will decide the first number that will be called for picking up tickets. Following the number decided by the drawing, all numbers after this first number will be called in consecutive order. 5. Anyone coming in after the beginning number is picked will be given a different set of numbers, which will be called numerically AFTER the initial numbers have been exhausted. Once again, there is no need for anyone to arrive earlier than 5:30 p.m. A drawing will decide the number that begins the distribution of tickets. The drawing will take place at 6:00 p.m. We will also have a 3:00 p.m. and a 5:00 p.m. Mass on Christmas Eve at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse Chapel. If all of the children in your family are of high school age, we ask you to please leave the ticketed Masses mentioned above for families with younger children. There will also be a Christmas Eve Mass at 7:00 p.m. and a Mass at Midnight. On Christmas morning, we will celebrate Christmas Mass at 7:30, 9:00, 10:30 a.m. and 12:00 Noon. There will be no Mass on Christmas night. We hope this information will help you with your planning for the upcoming holidays. Rev. John Hoffman 2013 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL UPDATE DOUBLE CREDIT FOR COMPLETING PLEDGES IS NOW AVAILABLE Thanks to your generosity, we have exceeded our goal for the 2013 Annual Catholic Appeal. The Parish s goal for the 2013 Campaign was $100,819. Through November 19 th $146,226 had been paid; $9,407 in pledges were still outstanding. Please complete any outstanding pledge payments in the next month or so. As you know, the Parish receives a 100% rebate of any amount over goal actually paid into the Appeal. As we are over goal, there will be double credit for these pledge completions. That is, SFX will get credit for exceeding its goal on the 2013 Appeal but 100% of remaining pledges fulfilled will come to the Parish. As we take steps toward our 125 th Anniversary Capital Campaign which you have been hearing about, please know that the Parish will not be expected to participate in the 2014 Annual Catholic Appeal. Thanks for your generosity and consideration! RETIREMENT FUND FOR RELIGIOUS Support elderly religious. A parishioner writes, As a Catholic School student from grades K 12, I was formed to be the person I am by many religious brothers and sisters, and I am forever grateful. Show your appreciation for the senior Catholic sisters, brothers, and religious order priests who made a positive difference in so many lives. Please give generously to next week s collection for the Retirement Fund for Religious.

SUNDAYS SCHOOL OF RELIGIOUS EDUCATION WEDNESDAYS December 1 December 8 December 15 At Home Lesson Class At Home Lesson Due Class December 4 December 11 December 18 At Home Lesson Class At Home Lesson Due Class * * * * CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD The Word of the Lord has a message for children as well as adults. Children s Liturgy of the Word offers the children an experience to hear the scripture in words that they can understand. Here at St. Francis we are fortunate and proud to have adult volunteers and Presiders of Liturgy who journey with our children so that they can experience the Word of the Lord with a message that is relevant and fitting for them. Our Saturday evening 5:00 p.m. Mass offers the opportunity for children in Grades Kindergarten Fourth to experience hearing and reflecting on the Word of the Lord in a way that is an empowering experience. Children in these grades are invited to follow their Reflectors of the Word to a prayer space away from the gathered assembly to hear the Scriptures in words they can understand. Children s Liturgy of the Word takes place in church whenever the children s choirs lead us in song/prayer. The Scriptures we hear will then be taken from the Children s Lectionary and the homily will be given in a way that children are able to relate to a little more readily. The children in Grades K 4 will go to their prayer space on the Saturdays that the choirs are not singing. Here is the tentative schedule: December 7 Cherub Choir and December 14 SF Choristers January 4 Cherub Choir and January 11 SF Choristers February 1 Cherub Choir and February 8 SF Choristers March 15 SF Choristers and March 22 Cherub Choir April 12 SF Choristers (Palm Sunday Weekend regular readings) April 26 SF Choristers Children in Grades K 4 will be invited to join their Reflectors in a prayer space away from the adults and to hear The Word of The Lord in words they can better understand on the following Saturdays (subject to change): December 21; January 18, 25; February 15, 22; March 1, 8 and April 5 You can call and direct your questions to: Terri Simeoni, RE Coordinator or Allen Sterwalt, Director of Music NAZARETH ACADEMY HOSTS FINAL FALL OPEN HOUSE Prospective students and families are encouraged to Experience Nazareth at the final Open House before the January test date. 8 QUEST SPEAKER EVENT The next Quest Speaker Event will be Sunday, December 8 at 4:30pm in the Church. We will be hosting Peggy Ratke, from Family Shelter Services presenting the Green Dot Strategy for violence prevention. The Green Dot Program was developed to help individuals find safe ways to intervene in situations characterized by partner violence, violence against children, bullying, stalking and other forms of abuse. Green Dot is based on the premise that the majority of people are non violent and can take part in reducing the violence perpetrated by the few who are violent. Training people how to get past the obstacles to intervening is at the core of this revolutionary approach to violence first developed at the University of Kentucky. The Green Dot Strategy is a comprehensive approach to violence prevention that capitalizes on the power of peer and cultural influence. Informed by social change theory, this program targets all community members as potential agents of social change. It seeks to engage them through awareness, education, and skills practice, resulting in the ultimate reduction of violence. Quest teens will be challenged to incorporate Gospel teaching into how they respond to bullying and other forms of violence in their lives utilizing Green Dot principles. THE GIVING TREE Many years ago, the O Brien Family began the Giving Tree here at SFX. Since then, Diane O Brien lost her battle with breast cancer. In her memory, the Giving Tree has been named The Diane O Brien Giving Tree. The Giving Tree allows us to help Christmas happen for approximately 300 individuals, along with our Sharing Parish, St. Agatha. Each person whose name has been sent to us receives two gifts. This adds up to 600 tags to be distributed and gifts returned. Many inner city families are helped by the outreach of St. Agatha s Parish. Their need is great, as is the joy we receive from sharing with them at Christmas. Help us to share the joy of the season with our friends at St. Agatha s by taking a tag next weekend, December 7 8. Affix the tag to the wrapped gift you purchased and return it the weekend of December BEFORE THE START of the Noon Mass. Once again, the work for this parish project is a service provided by the Teens in QUEST. Please call Emily Brabham at x304 with any questions. WINTER RETREAT HIDDEN TREASURE! St. Francis Xavier and St. Cletus are hosting a Freshmen/Sophomore Winter Retreat Hidden Treasure! Hidden Treasure is led by High School Juniors and Seniors eager to share their faith through the parables. Retreatants can expect a weekend of prayer, games, skits, music, and FUN! This weekend features the musical and speaking talents of Jon Pressimone. Jon is eager to share his faith through music and fun! Together with your teen, please consider if this might be a good opportunity to grow in faith and friendship with their peers. Space is limited, so it would be a good idea to register sooner rather than later. Our registration deadline is December 15. Registration forms are available on the parish website and at the rectory. ADVENT RECONCILATION Please join us as we celebrate the Advent Sacrament of Reconciliation on Monday, December 9 at 7:00 p.m. in Church. 11 SENIOR WOMEN S GROUP CALLING ALL BAKERS! Wednesday, December 4 10:00 a.m. Coffee 10:30 a.m. Prayer Service Rectory Meeting Room Living the Gospel with Gratitude Fr. John Hoffman, Presiding No RSVP Needed BRINGING CHILDREN TO CHURCH Few things are more important than bringing children to church for our Eucharistic celebration. God bless all of you who do this. It is the best way for them to learn and experience our gathering as a community, our prayer of thanksgiving and our being sent to do God s work in the world. It certainly brings joy to my life when you bring your children with you. Of course, I understand if you have to take your child out into the vestibule for any reason. Sometimes they get anxious and just need to get up and move around and that s just fine. The Eucharist is a profoundly sophisticated ritual which takes time and patience to assimilate and integrate into our lives. Look at how it has deepened over time in our own lives as adults! The fact that you parents are able to get everybody up and moving in the same direction at the same time astounds me and I am sure that it pleases God! Keep coming back! You are invited to reach out in love to those for whom Christmas is celebrated differently. Barb Szulc and Sarah Zavala are continuing a project initiated in 2011 to bring a taste of Christmas to incarcerated men living at the North Lawndale Adult Transition Center, a work release program that is part of the Illinois Department of Corrections. The holidays can be difficult for incarcerated individuals, and following the Gospel, we want to reach out in kindness at this time of the year. This is a great service opportunity for parents and children, grandparents and grandchildren, Quest groups or anyone who just loves to bake! As you plan your Christmas baking, we ask you to consider setting aside some of your favorite cookies (or muffins, or brownies, or chocolate covered pretzels) to share with the men and staff at North Lawndale. Barb, Sarah and their crew of helpers will collect and package the cookies, and deliver them on December 22. We are planning to deliver 250 dozen cookies to residents and staff at North Lawndale. In order to plan our own baking, please let us know by December 15th, if you intend to participate. Send an to Barb at: baszulc@aol.com with your name and an estimate of the number of cookies you'll donate. Cookies may be dropped off at Barb's home (205 46th Street, Western Springs) on Saturday, December 21st. Please call Barb at with any questions. New option this year: If you are unable to bake, and would like to contribute to the success of this project, we ask that you consider donating brownie, muffin or cookie mixes. You may drop them off in the back of the Church through December 15th. We'll be happy to do the baking for you! Thanks for your participation. Barb Szulc and Sarah Zavala Fr. John KITCHEN ANGELS The Kitchen Angels are a group of parishioners who help people by bringing meals to their homes. The Kitchen Angels have been in existence for many years, yet there are many people who are relatively new to the parish and do not know about them. If you know of a person or a family who could use some meals, or if you are interested in becoming a Kitchen Angel, please call Susie Lehuta at

RESPECT LIFE There is an abortion facility which is called the ACU Health Center located at 736 North York Road, just south of Ogden Avenue in Hinsdale. A group of committed volunteers (grandmas, grandpas, men, women, college age and high school students) gather outside the ACU clinic early each Saturday morning, as well as on other days and at other times, to pray for the women, men, babies, clinic workers and doctors. They also offer counsel, asking women and men to choose life for their unborn children. Frequently, lives are saved. Please pray for all those impacted by abortion, especially the babies. Also, consider joining the volunteer group which works to save lives at the Hinsdale abortion facility. Come for an hour, once a week, once a month or just once to see what it s all about. Please contact Lynn Benz at for more information. 13 WHY BUY FAIR TRADE COFFEE?? The coffee sold at St. Francis Xavier is purchased from Equal Exchange Fairly Traded. There is alot behind this coffee. We work closely with our farmer partners, year after year, to better understand each other s needs. The result is a trusting relationship and delicious coffee. Beth Ann Caspersen, Quality Control Manager Fair Trade builds right relationships between buyers and sellers that are rooted in the principles of human dignity and solidarity. Fair Trade: Respects human dignity Promotes the common good Advances economic justice Empowers disadvantaged people Connects us with the people who create the things we buy Cultivates global solidarity The Catholic Relief Services Fair Trade Program creates opportunities for us to bring these core values of our faith to bear on the choices we make as consumers choices that have the power to lift our brothers and sisters out of poverty. Effort is made to see that these coffee farmers are given a fair wage!!! THE MARY GARDEN AND RECTORY COURTYARD Dr. and Mrs. Loren Horton have been caring for the Mary Garden for the last 17 years. It is now time for them to pass the baton. Now we are looking for volunteers to maintain both the Mary Garden and the Rectory Courtyard with tasks such as spring clean up, plantings, watering, etc. If you are interested in helping us maintain these two beautiful areas, please call Fr. John s secretary, Maureen Pipal, at Thank you for your consideration. He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation 1 Colossians 1:15 St. Paul s magnificent poetic description tells us that we believe Jesus is the perfect creation, and in him the invisible God is made visible. But Paul goes on to say that Christ is in us and in all of creation. We are to be Christ: our remarkable calling is to be the face of God in our world. I was powerfully reminded of that when reading an article in the Sunday Tribune (November 17) by Steve Chapman. He questions the benefit of Head Start programs, and cites studies done by David Muhlhausen longtime scholar for the conservative Heritage Foundation. Chapman concludes that we are spending billions of dollars on a social program that is ineffective. He does not cite other recent studies, such as the one by by Steven Barnett, director of the National Institute for Early Education Research at Rutgers University, which concludes that Head Start produces modest benefits, including some long term benefits for children. Mr. Chapman does not suggest alternatives, nor does he question the terrible circumstances that these children often experience. But if we believe that these children are called, as all humans are, to mirror the invisible God, then we cannot simply ignore the incredible injustice done to poor children. They suffer daily from violence, from the generational poverty of their families, and from the inability of our school system to meet their needs. We are told in the Gospel that Jesus asked that the children be brought to him, and told us that we must have the faith of these little children. How can we ignore the suffering of children of our own day? If we believe the Gospel, if we believe Paul s teachings about the presence of Christ in humans, then we must find effective ways to lift these children out of poverty and hopelessness. We must begin to use the wealth of our nation to ensure that all children have hope, rather than using our resources on weapons of destruction. Lord, help us to be a people who bring life and hope to all children ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY The St. Vincent de Paul Society s next meeting will take place on Monday, December 2 at 7:00 p.m. in the Rectory Courtyard Room. The St. Francis Xavier Peace and Justice Committee meets on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30 p.m. in the rectory. For more information please contact Nancy Ryan at

A FREEWILL OFFERING IS YOUR ADMISSION TO THIS HOLIDAY CONCERT People of all faiths and spirituality are welcome to enjoy the inspired Christmas music of the west suburban group Strings of Faith in a benefit concert on Sunday, December 8 at 1:15 p.m. in the Chapel at the Congregation of the Sisters of St. Joseph, 1515 West Ogden Avenue in LaGrange Park. It will be a great break from holiday preparations. Admission is a freewill offering and there will be refreshments following the concert. There will also be a silent auction, bake sale and mystery gifts as part of the festivities. Proceeds will benefit the congregation s nonprofit hermitage retreat center, Christ in the Wilderness, on 80 acres of rolling hills in northwest Stockton, Illinois. For more information on the wilderness retreat center go to on the Internet or call A T T H E W E L L WALKING THE PATH BEFORE YOU Saturday, December 7 from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Facilitator: Paula D Arcy Poet David Whyte says, We may only get one chance in a lifetime to break the spell and break the promise that we will not speak in our own voice. Come and explore what it means to receive the road of life that is right before you, and understand that this is, in fact, your path. Resistance to what is only creates struggle. There are other choices. If you want to live in a different relationship to life, then learn to receive the initiating experiences offered by the Soul. COST: (Free for SFX Parishioners) Paula D Arcy is a writer, playwright, retreat leader and conference and seminar speaker. In 2001 she established Red Bird Foundation, which supports the growth and spiritual development of those in need throughout the world, including men and women in prison. A former psychotherapist, Paula survived the loss of her husband and young daughter in an accident in 1975, when she was three months pregnant. Among her best selling books are Gift of the Red Bird, Waking Up to This Day and When People Grieve. This program is co-sponsored in collaboration with St. John of the Cross and St. Francis Xavier parishes.
