3 SUNDAY, JULY 2, 2017 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME Whoever receives you receives me and whoever receives me receives the one who sent me And whoever gives only a cup of cold water to one of these little ones to drink because this little one is a disciple, amen, I say to you he will surely not lose his reward. One of the gifts Pope Francis extols, is the gift of hospitality. In our families, in our church, we have the ability to open the door and make others feel welcome. Elisha the prophet in the Book of Kings, was offered hospitality by a wealthy woman, and she was rewarded for her gift. The person ready and willing to give only a cup of cold water in the name of Jesus to a little one will not go without a reward. THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME First Reading: 2 Kings 4:8-11, 14-16a A woman in Shunem believed strongly in the holiness of the prophet Elisha. To reward her, Elisha promised that she and her aging husband would, within the year, be the parents of a son. Second Reading: Romans 6:3-4, 8-11 Paul explains to the Romans that by immersion in water at baptism, they die to their sins; by rising from the water, they rise from death and sin to new life in Christ. Gospel: Matthew 10:37-42 With simplicity, Jesus tells His apostles that everyone should love Him above all others -- father, mother, son or daughter. WHEN YOUR HUT S ON FIRE The only survivor of a shipwreck was washed up on a small, uninhabited island. He prayed feverishly for God to rescue him. Every day he scanned the horizon for help, but none seemed forthcoming. Exhausted, he eventually managed to build a little hut out of driftwood to protect himself from the elements and to store his few possessions. One day after scavenging for food, he arrived home to find his little hut in flames with smoke rolling up to the sky. He felt the absolute worst had happened and everything was lost. He was stunned with disbelief, grief and anger. He cried out, God! How could you do this to me? Early the next day, he was awakened by the sound of a ship approaching the island. It had come to rescue him! How did you know I was here? asked the man of his rescuers. We saw your smoke signal, they replied. The Moral of this Story: It s easy to get discouraged when things are going bad, but we shouldn t lose heart because God is at work in our lives, even in the midst of our pain and suffering. Remember that the next time your little hut seems to be burning to the ground it just may be a smoke signal that summons the Grace of God. God has not promised skies always blue, flower strewn pathways all our lives through. God has not promised sun without rain, joy without sorrow, peace without pain. But God has promised strength for the day, rest for the labor, light for the way. Grace for the trials, help from above. unfailing sympathy, undying love. He is a Priest of the Diocese of Gallup, New Mexico and served as Judicial Vicar of that Diocese for many years. He was also Rector of Sacred Heart Cathedral in Gallup. Fr. Ravi was with him for four years as Parochial Vicar when he was at the Cathedral. Please be sure to give Father a warm welcome! You may remember Father DeGaris who was here with us from May God bless you in your new assignment, Father DeGaris! 5 SUNDAY, JULY 2, 2017 THIRTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME WHY CHILDREN? Jesus said, Amen, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will not enter the kingdom of Heaven (Mt 18:3). Of all the people in the world to whom Our Lady could have appeared to in Fatima, why choose three innocent young shepherd children? We see throughout history God choosing the humble and small the shepherds who travel to Bethlehem, Bernadette Soubirous in Lourdes, Mary herself, and many others. In Fatima, that s exactly what happened. God chose three humble children from humble homes exactly to emphasize that this powerful message doesn t come from man, but from God. In her great Magnificat in Luke s Gospel Mary sings the praises of the God who has thrown down the rulers from their thrones and lifted up the lowly (Lk 1:52). Isn t it wonderful and typical then that these children, visited by this Beautiful Lady, the Queen of Heaven, who herself had received the message of an angel in a hovel, and who had given birth to the Son of God in a manger, should be the ones to receive her message of peace and prayer. OUR LADY OF FATIMA PILGRIM STATUE HERE AT ST. CATHARINE S FOR THE MONTH OF JULY St. Catharine s Church is honored to host the Pilgrim Statue of Our Lady of Fatima for the whole month of July. The Statue will remain with us for the month of July so that our parishioners and others may come and spend time in prayer. We will recite the Rosary in her honor each morning at 9:00 AM, Monday through Saturday, during the month of July. Please take advantage of this wonderful opportunity. There is no problem, I tell you, no matter how difficult it is, that we cannot resolve by the prayer of the Holy Rosary. Sister Lucia dos Santos ST.
