Matthew 22:21 Religious Education Dear Friends: The Pharisees in today s Gospel criticized Jesus because he was unconcerned with worldly status or the opinion of others. Jesus shook things up by caring for the poor and the sick, loving the unlovable, and preaching the Gospel of forgiveness. As Jesus followers, that s what we are called to do as well. We have several opportunities coming up: We have again been asked to help the Kevin Sullivan Food Closet (at the old Christ our King parish) to provide Thanksgiving meals for those in need. Specific items are asked of each grade religious ed families should check this week s newsletter for more details. In addition to canned goods, monetary donations for turkeys are also much needed and appreciated. The weekend of November 4 th and 5 th, the Catholic Charities truck (staffed by our Confirmation class) will be here before and after Masses to collect donations of your used clothing and household items. Pastor s Notes Power Struggle Power struggles occur on every level of society, from the world stage to relationships at work, to our own homes. We struggle for position in the hierarchy of power: Who has power over whom? How do they wield it? What is the source of that power? What is the healthy response? In this Sunday s Gospel reading the Pharisees engage Jesus in a power struggle over whether Jews should show tribute to Caesar by paying taxes. Jesus response puts this and every struggle for power into perspective. In harmony with the words of Isaiah and Paul, Jesus teaches us that God is the ultimate source of all power the power of earthly rulers, the Pharisees, Jesus, the Church, and the power within ourselves. Treasures from Our Tradition What makes the Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children different from the others? First, there is the intended assembly, which is described as comprised of mostly children of school age. There are three Eucharistic Prayers for Masses with Children available to us now in the missal. The first one has a very simple form, easily grasped by even a young child. The second has a great deal of participation by the assembly repeated sung acclamations. The third has a number of variations that can be tricky for a priest to handle if he hasn t prepared carefully. All of this work does point to a true treasure of our tradition: children are part of the Sunday assembly, precisely because they are baptized members of Christ s body. By contrast, the churches of the Reformation tend to look upon children as members in training, and see worship as an adult activity. Sunday school happens downstairs while the adults celebrate Holy Communion upstairs. In a phrase, that s not Catholic. Children belong to Christ and to the assembly. So, the desire to care for the children in the assembly, to draw them into the prayer, and to adapt our rituals and texts to their needs is deeply Catholic, a true pastoral effort to help draw everyone into the praise of God.

A short recognition reception will take place immediately following the 10:30 Mass in the Parish Family Center and will include some light refreshments. Adult Formation Fr. Leonard Klein will hold six Bible Study Lectures on the "Book of Revelation" on Mondays - 23, 30 and Nov 6 & 7th. They will run from 10:30am - 12:00pm. His overview is: "The Book of Revelation has through the history of the Church contributed both to undue confusion and undue certainty. Too often the central message of the victory of Christ is lost. Fr. Leonard Klein will lead a course looking at the complex symbolism and the simple announcement of the Gospel that make up the message of the last book of the Bible." She will speak about the life and faith of the people of San Marcos and how this partnership has helped the people of San Marcos. It has been a blessing for both dioceses.
