Lesson 10 February 4, 2018 James 2:14-26 Actions Speak Louder than Words Get Excited! Below are the instructions for the warm-up activity Play the Matching Game. Print three copies of the Matching Game Flashcards in Appendix B on cardstock paper and cut them out. Divide the class into three groups. Give each group one set of shuffled cards. Ask the groups to match the cards. Ask each group to select a pair and share how one item is useless without the other item. Emphasize how faith and works are paired together in the same way. (Correct matches: laptop pairs with girl programmers, surfboards pair with ocean wave, cars pair with gas pump.) Key Verse Exercise Give each student a copy of the Lesson 10 Key Verse Template in Appendix C. Read the verse to remember aloud and allow students to complete the template. Read and Learn! Read Zion and Zaya Learn About Faith aloud. Zion and Zaya Learn About Faith and Works Zaya was making an entry in her Bible Verse Journal when Zion walked into her bedroom and said, You know Zaya, we have learned so much about faith over the last few weeks. Faith brings us together, makes us obedient, and gives us courage to do what is right. Zaya thought about what Zion was saying and nodded her head in agreement. My journal entry, Zaya said, is about James 2:14. Faith also comes in two parts what we think on the inside (belief) and what we do on the outside (deeds). This is what I wrote in my journal. In this bible verse, James, Jesus brother, starts his discussion on faith with a statement on the value of faith: If someone says he has faith, but does nothing, his faith is worth nothing. Then he emphasizes the statement: Faith without works is dead. His examples made it very clear that it is more important to do it than to just talk about it. Having faith and talking about faith is not the same thing. Here is the first example: A brother or sister in Christ might need clothes or might need food. And you say to him, God be with you! I hope you stay warm and get plenty to eat. You say this, but you do not give that person the things he needs. Unless you help him, your words are worth nothing (2:15-16). James, then, proves that faith is demonstrated by what we do. Words are simply not enough. Even demons believe in one God. Wow Zaya! That s an impactful journal entry, said Zion. What else did James teach about faith? Zaya continued with more information. 3 P a g e

James also gave two Old Testament examples of faith: 1) God promised Abraham that he would be the father of many nations. But Abraham and Sarah were childless, so how could this be? In due time, God gave Abraham an heir whom he named Isaac. But God tested Abraham s faith. God told Abraham to offer his son Isaac as a sacrifice. With Isaac dead, how could Abraham become the father of many nations? But Abraham trusted God so much that when he went up on Mount Moriah to offer Isaac as a sacrifice, Abraham told his servants, Stay here with the donkey. My son and I will go over there and worship. Then we will come back to you (Genesis 22:5). When Isaac asked, Where is the lamb for the sacrifice?, Abraham answered, The Lord will provide for the sacrifice (22:7-8). And so it was that as Isaac lay on the wood on the altar and Abraham lifted his knife, God sent an angel to stop Abraham and provided a ram whose horns had gotten caught in a bush. So it was that Abraham trusted/had faith in God, and God kept His promise of making Abraham the father of many nations, (17:5). Another Old Testament example of faith and works was Rahab. When Joshua sent spies to Jericho, Rahab saved their lives. When the king sent men to kill the spies, Rahab hid them in bundles of flax on her roof. Rahab realized that the men were special Their God ruled heaven and earth (Joshua 2:11). Rahab asked in exchange that she and her family be saved when Jericho was conquered. The spies agreed. After dark, Rahab used a rope to let the spies escape through a window. Before the spies left, they told Rahab to tie a red rope in the window. This would be a sign to save her and her family. So when Joshua fit the battle of Jericho and the walls came tumblin down, Rahab and her family were saved. God took care of Rahab because she did what was right and trusted God to take care of her. Then Zion interrupted Zaya as she tried to share more information. Okay, okay. I think I get it Zaya. Actions speak louder than words. Rise Up! Answers to questions in What Do You Think will vary. Limit discussion to five minutes. When was the last time your tongue got you into trouble? Explain ways you try to control your tongue. Complete the Superhero Challenge if time permits. Tell students the Zion and Zaya need helpful hints to know when it is the right time to think about something, the right time to say something, and the right time to do something. Write your suggestions in the table provided in your book. Below are the instructions for the Time to Create activity Make a Faith Poster. Materials needed: Large white paper (one for each group); paint, markers or crayons; glitter glue; newspaper (if paint is used or markers will bleed through the paper) Instructions: Watch Faith Through the Eyes of a Child ( Divide the class into groups of 3. Give each group a set of materials. Ask students to design a poster about faith and works. Encourage students to be creative. Display the posters in the classroom. 4 P a g e

Close the lesson with prayer. Lord, help me to show my faith by doing good things for others. Amen. Lesson 11 February 11, 2018 James 3: 1-12 Watch Your Tongue! Get Excited! Below are the instructions for the warm-up activity Play Charades. Come up with a few scenarios when fire is useful (like for cooking) and when fire is destructive (like a forest fire). Select students to act out the scenario so the class can guess whether the fire in the situation is useful or destructive. Emphasize how the tongue can be like a fire. Key Verse Exercise Give each student a copy of the Lesson 11 Key Verse Template in Appendix D. Read the verse to remember aloud and allow students to complete the template. Read and Learn! Read Zion and Zaya Learn About Keeping the Faith aloud. Zion and Zaya Learn About Keeping the Faith One day, Zion and Zaya decided to have a tongue twister contest. Zion told Zaya he could say a tongue twister better than she could. So the contest was on. Here is the tongue twister they started with. See if you can say it without any mistakes: She sells seashells by the seashore. Zion and Zaya said this tongue twister perfectly. Here is the second one they tried. Now you try it: He threw three free throws. Now let s try a really hard one, said Zaya. I bet I can say it without any mistakes: Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers. A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked. If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers, Where s the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked. 5 P a g e

Zion said, This is one of the hardest tongue twisters to say. But it is fun to try. It really gives your tongue a workout! The lesson today, however, deals with another aspect of the tongue. You must know what to say, when to say it, and how to say it. Proper speech is not only saying the right words at the right time, but also controlling your desire to say what you should not say. You must think before you speak. One of your praise songs has a verse that says, Be careful little tongue what you say. So you must not gossip, brag, put others down, or lie. James gave a description of the tongue, comparing it with small, but powerful things. First, the tongue is compared to a bit. A bit is a metal mouthpiece on a bridle. The bridle is made of straps used for controlling a horse. Then the tongue is compared to the rudder of a ship. The rudder is a broad, flat movable piece of wood or metal, used for steering the ship. Last, the tongue is compared to fire. Like a single match can burn acres of trees, the tongue is a fire that can consume the whole body. Even though the tongue is one of the smallest members/parts of the body, it can get you into trouble. The tongue can tell lies, cause anger, express jealousy, or exaggerate. Once harsh words are spoken, you cannot control or even reverse the damage they can and will do. Words are like an out-of-control forest fire that destroys acres of God s green earth and kills God s creatures and God s masterpiece people made in God s image. Humans have been able to tame all kinds of animals. Humans have tamed electricity and made it useful for all humankind. But humans have not been able to tame the tongue. The tongue issues more poison than the most venomous snake. James described the tongue as a restless evil, full of deadly poison (3:8). James wrote about the contradictory nature of the tongue. With the tongue, you praise God and curse those made in God s image. But this should not be, for to curse human beings is to curse God. James showed that praising and cursing do not go together, any more than fresh water and salt water can flow from the same stream. Likewise, a fig tree cannot bear olives, and a grapevine cannot produce figs. Rise Up! Answers to questions in What Do You Think will vary. Limit discussion to five minutes. Read other verses about the tongue Ephesians 4:29, Proverbs 13:3, 12:22. Discuss the statement: Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me. Complete the Superhero Challenge if time permits. Tell students Zion and Zaya know sometimes people misuse the first amendment right of free speech to say whatever they want, whenever they want. Help Zion and Zaya come up with boundaries for their freedom of speech so they remember to speak with kind and respectful words in all situations. Below are the instructions for the Time to Create activity Make a Tongue Filled with Blessings. Materials needed: Copies of Tongue Pattern in Appendix B, pens or pencils Instructions: Tell students to write kind words in the tongue on the emoji. Close the lesson with prayer. Lord, I know you hear everything I say. Help me control my tongue. Amen. 6 P a g e

Lesson 12 February 18, 2018 Acts 9: Doing for Others Get Excited! Below are the instructions for the warm-up activity Watch All About Kindness. Watch the Pay It Forward video clip on YouTube ( Then ask students to discuss Trevor s ideas. Limit the discussion to 3 minutes. Key Verse Exercise Give each student a copy of the Lesson 12 Key Verse Template in Appendix E. Read the verse to remember aloud and allow students to complete the template. Read and Learn! Read Zion and Zaya Learn About Faithful Followers aloud. Zion and Zaya Learn About Faithful Followers Zion and Zaya are going on an adventure today. They are traveling to ancient Palestine to walk the route the apostle Peter took during his mission in and around Judea. A woman who loved in Joppa named Tabitha (Dorcas, in Greek,) became ill and died. Her body was washed, prepared, and placed in a room upstairs in her house. Believers in Joppa heard that Peter was nearby in Lydda. They sent two men with a message for Peter to come quickly to Tabitha s house. Peter, the apostle accompanied the two men and went upstairs where Tabitha s body was placed. While Tabitha was alive, she was known for her kindness. Tabitha used her gifts to serve the Lord by serving others. She made clothes for widows. When Peter entered the room, the widows were crying. They showed Peter the clothes that Tabitha had made for them. Peter sent everyone from the room. God used Peter as God s instrument to perform a powerful miracle. Peter could not raise a person from the dead by his own strength. He could only raise Tabitha because Jesus had given power to the disciples through the Holy Spirit to do what Jesus called them to do. Both Peter and Tabitha used the gifts God had given them. Peter knelt and prayed. Then Peter turned to Tabitha and said, Tabitha, stand up (Acts 9:40). Tabitha opened her eyes and sat up. Peter invited the widows into the room and showed them that Tabitha was alive. The people were so happy that they told others what Peter had done. They knew that Jesus had given Peter the power to heal and restore to life. Zion and Zaya saw how Tabitha was true to what God wants all of us to do that is to have an impact on the lives of others. This adventure inspired Zion and Zaya to show support for people who are in need. Caring for others is the responsibility of credible, committed disciples. 7 P a g e

Rise Up! Answers to questions in What Do You Think are underlined. State whether you agree or disagree with the following statements. a. Dorcas was Tabitha s other name. Agree, Dorca was Tabitha s Greek name. b. Peter was in Joppa when Tabitha died. Disagree, Peter was nearby in Lydda. c. The Lord told Peter to go to Joppa. Disagree, the people sent two men to get Peter. d. Peter touched Dorcas to revive her. Disagree, Peter prayed and then told her to get up. e. Dorcas was known for the clothes she made. Agree, she made clothes for widows. f. Peter left Joppa right away. Disagree, Peter stayed in Joppa for a while. Complete the Superhero Challenge if time permits. Tell students Zion and Zaya want to do something helpful for the seniors in their church and community. Help them by planning a service project for the seniors in your church and community. Below are the instructions for the Time to Create activity Make a Kindness Rock. Materials needed: Rock art kit (from any craft store or Five Below), thin paint brushes, paint, cups of water, newspaper, paper plates, plastic table cloths, yarn Instructions: Use the newspaper to cover tables and floors. Cut the plastic table cloth in large rectangles to make aprons for the students. Use yarn to hang the apron on the student. The apron does not have to be fancy. It just needs to protect students clothing. Put a small dab of various colors of paint on paper plates to create a paint palette for each student. Give each student a paintbrush, rock and cup of water. Ask students to design a rock with a positive word like imagine, dream, love, inspire, fun, faith, smile, grow, pray, etc. Allow the rocks to dry. When the rocks are dry, tell students to place the rocks in random places outside like on the playground, at the bus stop, or in their front yard. Close the lesson with prayer. Lord, I know that when I serve others, I serve you. Help me to be a good servant. Amen. 8 P a g e

Lesson 13 February 25, Timothy 6: The Way to Go Get Excited! Below are the instructions for the warm-up activity Sing Jesus Loves Me Teach students the lyrics to the song if necessary. Jesus loves me this I know For the bible tells me so Little ones to him belong They are weak but he is strong Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. Yes, Jesus loves me. For the bible tells me so. Key Verse Exercise Give each student a copy of the Lesson 13 Key Verse Template in Appendix F. Read the verse to remember aloud and allow students to complete the template. Read and Learn! Read Zion and Zaya Learn How to Stand Up for Jesus aloud. Zion and Zaya Learn How to Stand Up for Jesus We give a lot of importance to how we look on the outside. Everyone wants to be good-looking. But Zion and Zaya are that it is what s inside you that counts most to God! Character refers to the person you are on the inside. Things like honesty, loyalty, kindness, a willingness to work and love for others show what you are like inside. Zion was in the family room writing a journal entry on a bible story he read about Timothy. Timothy was a young man who became one of Paul s closest friends, helpers, and companions. He helped Paul spread the news about Jesus. Paul loved Timothy and called him son. He carefully trained Timothy to work in the churches, and appointed him leader of the church in Ephesus. When Paul was old, he wrote letters to guide and encourage Timothy, as well as to help the church at Ephesus to demonstrate the character traits that would please God. In the final chapter of 1 Timothy 6, Paul addresses Timothy as man of God, (v. 11). As such, Paul commands Timothy to flee from the things of the world; such as, arguing, worldly gain, selfish interest, jealousy, making trouble, insults, temptation, desire for wealth, and love of money. But Paul doesn t stop there. He commands Timothy to live a life that demonstrates righteousness, holiness, faith, love, patience, meekness, and service to God.Paul reminds Timothy that people will be carried away by the emotion of a good gospel message, but it is difficult to keep people interested in taking a stand for Jesus. Being a Christian means you are not running a hundred-mile dash; you are running a marathon! Then Paul 9 P a g e

commands Timothy to fight for the faith. In other words, promote unity, love, and tolerance of the chief Christian virtues. He also tells Timothy to take hold of eternal life, (6:19) by responding to God s call and accepting God s blessings. When Zion was taking a quick snack break he saw that Zaya was in the kitchen too. He said to her, I was just reading the advice Paul gave to Timothy. I hope I am living in a way that does not disgrace Jesus name. I know sometimes I can be a little selfish and impatient I am definitely going to work on that. God wants us to be ready to share. Zaya responded, I suppose we all have something to work on. I remind myself that God is always with me, watching everything I do, and that motivates me to live each moment to please Him. I want others to see my faith in Jesus. Whatever you are like when nobody s looking is what you are really like! Rise Up! Answers to questions in What Do You Think will vary. Limit discussion to five minutes. Discuss the four commands Paul gives Timothy: flee, pursue, fight, take hold, (1 Tim. 6:11-12, NIV). Complete the Superhero Challenge if time permits. Come up with a few scenarios where students have to make a decision over the best thing to do. Tell students Zion and Zaya know the best way to show godly characteristics is to do what Jesus would do in every situation. Share a scenario and ask the students to advise Zion and Zaya on how the situation should end in a way that pleases Jesus. Below are the instructions for the Time to Create activity Make a Be Like Jesus bracelet Materials needed: DIY slap bracelets (from Oriental Trading), crayons or markers Instructions: Allow students to decorate their bracelets words that remind them to be like Jesus. Close the lesson with prayer. Lord, I know everything belongs to you. Help me to share with others without complaining. Amen. 10 P a g e
