What do you need to get there? Who are you seeking to join you on this part of your church s faith journey? Our future will always be driven by our embracement and commitment to the beliefs of today's United Church of Christ. It is our prayerful hope that this church community will reflect such beliefs through our ministries and missions, while we continually strive to accept, serve and love one another. It is our dream and vision that First Congregational United Church of Christ, Watertown will be that "Beacon On A Hill" within our community that proudly espouses those beliefs through our message and mission. But much work lies ahead, as we must routinely re-evaluate our congregation's Purpose, Mission and Vision, and accept change when necessary, as we always aspire to better serve our loving God. 4 What we value about living in our area (2 3 sentences): Watertown is a medium-sized town, of approximately 23,000 people, which is located between the cities of Madison and Milwaukee. The location provides a wide diversity of cultural and sporting events. Watertown is surrounded by many farms, which have formed the base for a strong agri-business economy. Current size of membership: 242 Languages used in ministry (other than English): N/A Position Title: Senior Minister Position Duration (choose one, delete the other options listed): Settled a called position intended for longer-term ministry in which the minister moves church membership to the congregation and moves standing to related association Compensation Level (choose one, delete the other options listed): Full Time Does the total support package meet conference compensation guidelines? 5 ***SCOPE OF WORK (add here the Scope of Work developed by your church using the Call Agreement Workbook) Core Competencies: (List three core competencies that you imagine could be foundational in your next minister s relationship with the church. For example, a church seeking a pastoral care minister might hope to call someone who is caring, sensitive and sociable, while a church seeking an executive minister might want an organized, detailoriented and time-conscious person.) We are seeking someone who is sensitive, engaging, and energized. COMPENSATION AND SUPPORT Salary Basis (from the Call Agreement Workbook, equal to Cash Salary plus Value of Parsonage/Housing Allowance): $55, Benefits (choose one): Salary plus Benefits estimated at $86, (per conference guidelines) What is the expected living situation for your next minister (e.g. parsonage, living nearby with a housing allowance, living elsewhere to commute as needed)? 6 Congregational United Church of Christ in Watertown, WI. Clergy Roundtable which is a ecumenical group who are instrumental in addressing local social issues within the community such as the local food pantry, Bread and Roses (weekly free meal), Food to Go & Grow, Summer Sandwiches, Loaves & Fishes (weekly free meal). If applicable, describe how your church will adopt part-time adjustments in the pastoral schedule to support a minister s bi-vocational employment: N/A WHO IS GOD CALLING TO MINISTER WITH US? Describe the ministry goals you envision your next minister co-collaborating with the congregation to achieve. We look forward to collaborating with our future pastor on continued mission and outreach both within and outside our community of faith. Missions are an important part of our church's history and our future. We are very committed to continuing and increasing our outreach projects. Reaching out to those in need, feeding and clothing the needy and meeting our commitment to Our Church s Wider Mission are present and future goals of our church. We would like our future leader to appreciate and participate in our commitment to the many mission projects we feel are important. We envision our next minister co-collaborating with the congregation to achieve to be a community for all people by equipping us/or facilitating to work for racial justice; to reach out to demographic groups in our community that aren t represented in our congregation (a connection with the Hispanic community) and inter generational justice. Growing a vital community of faith for youth; to reach more students, and expanding a ministry that the students will enjoy. Working with the congregation to cultivate a positive sense of community identity within the ministry, and stewarding a sustainable vision much larger than himself or herself while serving at our church. We envision our next minister to continue our growth as an Open and Affirming church. We look forward to new insight and perspectives on reaching out to the LGBTQ community and letting them know we are a safe space for them to worship and deepen their faith. Our new minister will also continue the education of our church family on the importance and impact of ONA to our larger community. As a congregational church, we believe that attracting new members and growing our church should and must be a shared responsibility between our minister and the church membership. Our next pastor should share ideas regarding future growth with our PAGE 8

Church Council, our Board of Deacons, our Board of Worship, and other relevant church leaders. As a church, we are currently working to realize a goal to upgrade and modernize our website, which is an important and essential tool to reach out to potential new members. The church has also set as a goal to work towards becoming an immigrant welcoming congregation in the next year. Finally, we continue to work to refine our monthly Dementia Friendly services, which is another initiative that may over time bring additional new members. It is important that our next minister represent the values of our congregation. We envision our pastor to be welcoming and free of judgement. Sermons should help to explain scripture, while at the same time be fresh and relevant to contemporary lives. We believe our minister must be comfortable working with all members of our church, especially the youngest members of our congregation. Exhibiting these values will in and of itself ensure the church s growth. Describe how your vision of the minister you are now seeking will assist the congregation in making an impact beyond its walls. This church has a long history of making a difference in the Watertown community as well as a global difference. The minister we are seeking will continue their involvement in community activities such as Gingerbread Preschool (preschool & 4K hosted at UCC Watertown), Summer Sandwiches in the Park (bag lunch offered to community once a week in cooperation with several local churches), Bread and Roses (weekly free meal), Clergy Roundtable, and Love Fund (which is a account used for charitable assistance within the Watertown community funded by loose coin collection and distributed solely at the Pastor s discretion) just to name a few. Recent efforts have been made to start a dementia friendly service one Sunday per month. At this current time this is the only service of it s type within our greater community. We want to continue to reach out to those in our community who could benefit from this service. Our future Pastor would continue to inspire and guide us to find new outreach projects within our community. Specify language requirements or culturally-specific capacities preferred in a next ministerial leader, and why those matter to the congregation s sense of calling. At this time we do not have any specific language requirements or culturally-specific needs; however we would hope that our Pastor would be culturally sensitive to the growing and changing needs of our community. PAGE 9

Based on what you have learned about who your church is, who your church s neighbor is, and who God is calling the church to become, describe four areas of excellence from The Marks of Faithful & Effective Authorized Ministry that your next minister will display to further equip the congregation s ministry in these areas. Much of this congregation s service work is directed locally to the Watertown community. Our members choose to work first hand in our mission efforts, and enjoy seeing the benefits of our actions. We believe in the importance of providing hope and healing to a hurting world, continuing discernment in one s call in community, and practicing the radical hospitality of God as outlined in the UCC s Marks of Faithful and Effective Authorized Ministers In The United Church Of Christ. Our mission efforts are not only transformational is changing our community for the better, they also help to transform the individuals in our congregation. Our service work is in itself empowering, and guides us to be faithful to God s call, reflective of Christ s mission, and open to the surprises of the Holy Spirit. WHO IS GOD CALLING US TO BECOME? Who is God calling you to become as a congregation? The question of "who is God asking us to become?" can best be answered by examining First Congregational UCC's Mission Statement: "As a welcoming, inter-generational church, we seek to honor God by loving and serving others in his name, exemplify and promote the life and teachings of Jesus Christ; accept and respect all; and provide a safe and dynamic environment of spiritual growth." Becoming an Open and Affirming Church was an important step in our efforts to "accept and respect all". Establishing a strong "Safe Church Policy", and mandating that all members of our boards, and everyone involved in Christian Education complete a safe church class every two years helps to "provide a safe and dynamic environment of spiritual growth". Beyond our Mission Statement, we also have developed a Covenant Statement, which also addresses "who is God asking us to become?". Sections of our Covenant Statement ask that our members "prayerfully respect the values of others without judging differences", "to care for each other and our greater communities in mind, body, and spirit", to "forgive each other when we make mistakes, and encourage each other to grow from those mistakes, by being respectful listeners who are open and honest". The Covenant Statement also importantly states that we should be "mindful to always have PAGE 10

a Christ-centered attitude", which is at the heart of who we believe God is asking us to become. In our search for a permanent pastor, we look forward to, and will welcome a leader who will help us grow to become more Christ like. Describe how God is calling you to reach out to address the emerging challenges and opportunities of your community and congregation. For example, describe two experiments your congregation has initiated or engaged in the past year, what were the results and where do you see your next steps? Has your church had a multi-year strategic plan or vision statement; if so, where do you see that plan/vision taking you? Recent efforts have been made to start a dementia friendly service one Sunday per month. At this current time this is the only service of it s type within our greater community. Continue on reaching out to those in our community who could benefit from this service. Our reinstated Praise Band is intended to be intergenerational. The intent of the Praise band is to bring non-traditional music to our congregation by involving/appealing to high school students and young adults in an effort to connect with the congregation as a whole. WHO ARE WE NOW? CONGREGATIONAL REFLECTIONS 11-YEAR REPORT CONGREGATIONAL DEMOGRAPHICS PARTICIPATION AND STAFFING CHURCH FINANCES HISTORICAL INFORMATION CONGREGATIONAL REFLECTIONS Describe your congregation s life of faith. For example, who is a favorite theologian admired in the congregation and why? How is God most often described in worship liturgy? In what ways would you describe the Holy Spirit in your midst? PAGE 11

A favorite writer to whom our congregation turns for guidance and inspiration includes Eugene Peterson who has been a great part of our worship service. He is known for his help in writing The Message which uses contemporary language based off of the Bible. The language is not patriarchal and tends toward the inclusive. Martin Niemoller and Marcus Borg are also familiar and welcome voices in our congregation. For clarification, Progressive Christianity is characterized by a willingness to question tradition, acceptance of human diversity with a strong emphasis on social justice. This congregation lives out it s faith in their care for the poor, the oppressed, and being environmental stewards of the earth. First Congregational UCC of Watertown embodies the belief that Jesus was a healer and a man of great wisdom and courage who taught the message(s) of inclusiveness, tolerance and liberation. God is often described in worship liturgy by the word and music. Our benediction song Go Now in Peace is the perfect end to our service and sending us out to carry forth the teachings of Jesus Christ. Our Congregation has a deep belief in the centrality to love one another (John 15:17) within the teachings of Jesus Christ. This leads to a focus on promotion values such as compassion, justice, mercy and tolerance often witnessed through political activism. The Holy Spirit is present in the unyielding commitment to meeting the needs of the poor and a steadfast solidarity with brothers and sisters who live on the margins of society. First Congregational UCC Watertown has compassion for all living beings. Including our full support for LGBTQ rights and affirmation including support for same sex marriage, affirmation of gay, lesbian, bisexual, trans identity and authentic Christians. Describe several strengths or positive qualities of your congregation. - Strong music ministry - Loving and caring Christian Education ministry - Members who have stepped up to take on extra duties (e.g. custodial cleaning, repairs and maintenance of the building and grounds) - Strong sense of belonging and a strong community of faith - Great participation and leadership within the congregation PAGE 12

- We have a history of strong pastoral leadership - We are hopeful and look toward the future - Open and Affirming - Mission and Outreach minded First Congregational United Church of Christ has an amazing and strong music program. Through the leadership of our choir director we are able to enjoy both a senior choir and children s choirs which enhance our worship service several times a month. We have very dedicated piano and organ players that lead us in our worship and are also willing to play at funerals, weddings and other events at our church. Our church is very blessed to have several musicians that are willing to share their time and talents with us and provide special music to enhance our worship services with special music. The Christian Education ministry is an important part of our church and is staffed by volunteers who give of their time to teach Sunday school, organize youth group events, fund raisers and mission trips. We have youth in our church that also does fund raising for our community such as backpacks for the homeless and Souper Bowl to help stock our local food pantry shelves. During some lean financial times the members of our church have come together to provide much needed services such as custodial cleaning and repairs and maintenance to the building and groups. We have an amazing group of people who are at the church daily to take care of project and help out anywhere they are needed. When our church secretary takes time off we have people who step in and cover the phones and other office duties. We have great participation and leadership in our congregation. The members have a sense of belonging and a strong community of faith. They are willing to give of their time and talents for the greater good of our church and our neighbors. First Congregational UCC has a history of strong pastoral leadership. Our congregation is very mission and outreach minded and is involved with numerous community projects, fundraisers and non-profit organizations. We believe and practice and Open and Affirming attitude and feel that Jesus does not reject anyone and neither do we. But most of all we are hopeful and strong and we look forward to the future and what God has in store for us. ****Describe what worship is like when your congregation gathers. For example, where does worship take place, and what is it based around? What was a recent baptism like? What are some words used to describe good preaching? PAGE 13

Worship takes place in our sanctuary. We have a dementia friendly service once a month. We have also had outdoor services and services in our fellowship hall of different occasions. We have always based our gatherings around fellowship and community. We greet each other at the door, we give peace to each other during services and we join in fellowship and friendship after services for coffee and snacks. As a congregation we feel that no matter where a person is on their journey of life they are welcome. We sing the hymn often that states All are welcome in this house! Our baptisms are a celebration of new life and of a new member to our family. We sing and pray and welcome the baptized into our church. The pastor will walk the baby up and down the aisle to show everyone the new member and often the family will stand in the hall after the service so everyone can greet and congratulate them. When we think of good preaching we use words like bible based, welcoming, and inclusive, thought provoking, relatable and sincere. A good sermon has a story that is based out of the bible but relatable in today s world so people can connect to the lesson and see how it pertains to their lives. Describe the educational program and/or faith formation vision of your church. For example, how are young people in leadership? How do people continue to form their faith over a lifetime? Name a topic studied or curriculum used recently; what was the impact of this study on those who attended? The youth of our church participate in leadership roles on several different levels. Youth are asked to be Acolytes. They participate in choir and volunteer for such things as ushering and child care. The youth have many opportunities to give back to our church and community by participating in events for different holidays, the blood drive, Summer Sandwiches, and other fund raising events our church has. In the past the youth organized a car wash to raise money for a member of the church that was in need of a handicapped van. Our church is currently starting a women s bible study group Becoming Heart Sisters. This study will be offered twice a week on Tuesdays. In the past we have had other bible study groups that have met at the church. Some have been successful while others struggled to have enough participants to continue. We are always looking for new ways to engage the member of the church to gather in fellow ship and study the word of God. The hope is that we will have enough interest to also start a men s bible study group as well as groups for teens and couples. Describe how your congregation is organized for ministry and mission. For example, how are decisions communicated in your church? How are teams or committees organized? Where does your church struggle for vision? When it comes to decision-making, how many hours are spent in meetings per month? PAGE 14

Think of a time when action had to be taken quickly, for example when a crisis or disaster occurred. How was that accomplished? Can you provide the next minister with a copy of an organization structure, bylaws and/or annual report to further explain the patterns of the church s activity and governance? 15 Describe the mix of ethnic heritages in your congregation, and the overall racial makeup. Most UCC congregations tend to describe themselves as diverse. Yet, the vast majority of UCC congregations are mono-cultural. What does diversity mean in your context? For example, when was a time the church made a major budget change? How is the budgeting process done? What new ministry initiative has your church financed? Our church s financial history saw a period of time when annual deficits occurred too often. In recent times, every effort is made to adhere to a balanced budget, and during the last two years, our income has exceeded expenditures. The 2017 church budget again reflects financials that will be operating in the black. Our church budget is finalized in November by the Church Council after input from the individual Boards and Council members. Final budget figures are determined after projected donations/income is estimated for the upcoming year. A recent ministry our church has helped promote through financial support is our monthly dementia service. HISTORICAL INFORMATION Name one to three significant happenings in the history of your church that have shaped the identity of your congregation. Add the most important event in the life of your church in the past 10 years. First Congregational Church UCC Watertown was established in One of the most significant events in the history of our church was when we made the move from our location on 4 th Street Watertown to a new building. In 1993, First Congregational located into a large, modern church with spacious classrooms and a fully equipped PAGE 23

modern kitchen. This new facility was built to facilitate long-range growth and later added a large educational wing in At this location, we have a large wildflower garden. From a press release in Fall of 2015: The National Wildlife Federation (NWF), America s largest wildlife conservation and education organization, is pleased to recognize that First Congregational United Church of Christ, Watertown, Wisconsin has successfully created a Certified Wildlife Habitat through its Garden for Wildlife program. NWF celebrates the efforts of First Congregational UCC to create a garden space that improves habitat for birds, butterflies, frogs, and other wildlife by providing essential elements needed by all wildlife, such as natural food sources, clean water, cover, and places to raise young. The most recent significant event was on July 13, 2014, when our congregation voted to become an Open and Affirming church. While this change provided us with some conflict, we are proud to accept all people to our congregation. Many of us have differing beliefs and political opinions from each other, but we believe that all are welcome in God s house, no matter their race, sexual identity, socioeconomic status, or any other thing that may make someone different. Describe a specific change your church has managed in the recent past. The decision to become Open and Affirming created a division among members of the congregation and resulted in some members choosing to leave the church. This division caused several members of our church to call for removal of our pastoral leadership. A congregational vote was held and the congregation overwhelmingly voted to keep our current leadership. A few months later, our Pastor chose to accept a call with another church. This conflict resulted in hiring outside help to guide our congregation to a healthier state. The months of visits from Sand Bur Consulting has improved relationships and conflict resolution in our church. While not all church members beliefs align with each other, we have grown to have a place where it is safe to be yourself and respectfully express opinions. The time of conflict was very trying for our church, but we believe that we have come out of it stronger and healthier than before. Every church has conflict, some minor, some larger. Where two or three are gathered, there will be disagreement. Describe your congregation s values and practices when it comes to conflict. For example, what is an example of a recent conflict and something your congregation learned from it? Describe an occasion when Does your church have policies, protocols or structures for dealing with conflict?) PAGE 24

Following one of our larger conflicts, our church wrote a covenant statement that has some protocol on dealing with conflict. To paraphrase it: we are to discuss respectfully with each other when conflict arises to come to a solution. The church council would be the place to go with any major conflict that needs their attention. Ministerial History (include all previous ministerial staff for the past 30 years) Staff member s name Years of service UCC Standing (Y/ No) John Kennedy Yes Stephen Savides Yes Robert Tully Yes Comment on what your church has learned about itself and its relationship with persons who provided ministerial leadership: Each pastoral leader has brought new insights and ideas to our congregation which have allowed us to grow, learn, and think beyond our comfort zone as a congregation. Each leader has been able to draw out the best of our congregation and inspire us to use our time and talents for our church and wider community. All the previous pastors were very different from each other and offered us different kinds of leadership. We value the differences of our leaders and welcome new perspectives. Sometimes we are pushed out of our comfort zones, and this can lead to conflict. Through that conflict, we learn, grow, and gain stronger faith Has any past leader left under pressure or by involuntary termination? Yes, our last pastor, John Kennedy, left under pressure. In the summer of 2014, there was a group of people who disagreed with our church's decision to become Open and Affirming, among other personal issues, and petitioned to remove Pastor John Kennedy. Ultimately, our church voted to keep Pastor John, but the conflict was not resolved at that point. A small group of people wrote letters to the editor, spoke poorly of our pastor in the community, and some even threatened him and his family. Both the proposal of the vote to remove Pastor John and the continuing events led to his decision to leave our church. Many of these members of the congregation have moved to other churches, and our church went through a period of conflict resolution guidance from Sand Bur Consulting. Though this conflict is still recent and relatively close to the PAGE 25

surface, there has been a lot of healing. Many of us in the congregation feel that we have become stronger and are better prepared to handle conflict when it may arise. Has your church been involved in a Situational Support Consultation? Yes, our church worked with Sand Bur Consulting in Has a past pastor been the subject of a Fitness Review while at your church? No WHO IS OUR NEIGHBOR? COMMUNITY VISION MISSION INSITE COMMUNITY VISION How do the relationships and activities of your congregation extend outward in service and advocacy? For example, which service activities has your church participated in this past year? Where has the church participated in global connections of care and justice? 25 Service activities have been an important part of this church s ministry since First Congregational UCC was established in Activities during the past year include the Love Fund. The Love Fund is an account that has been used for over 40 years to provide charitable assistance which is determined solely at the discretion of the pastor, after he has interviewed those who request funding to ascertain their need. An example of appropriate use would be to help a family or individual with rent help, food, or fuel when no other help is evident. This account is funded by loose coin offering, with designated offerings averaging approximately $ per year. It is further funded by a past donation of $10,000, which is dispersed in the amount of $ annually. In 2016, $1936 went to help people in need, including approximately $ for assistance with utility bills, and $ in gas vouchers and cab vouchers for those needing transportation for work, school, or medical care. For over 50 years, First Congregational has maintained a relationship with Gingerbread Daycare and Preschool. Gingerbread has been housed at First Congregational since March, It was the first preschool in the region and was started by the congregation of the First Congregational Church in Watertown. Gingerbread provides childcare for children regardless of faith, and fulfills a significant need in the community. Three designated members of our congregation serve on their Board of Directors, and our Pastor serves as an ex-officio member of the Board. First Congregational does not directly contribute financially to Gingerbread, but provides their location at below market rent. In 2016, Gingerbread paid $ for use of First Congregational s Sunday school and kitchen facilities. Another community service activity is called Undies Sunday. It was ascertained that schools had a need for underwear for small children who have mishaps, or get wet playing during recess. The congregation has a month long drive to obtain underwear for young, school age children. The underwear is then distributed to schools in Watertown by our Mission Board. In 2016, we donated 267 items for this purpose. Other Outreach/Mission Board projects have included Bread and Roses suppers, food collection for the Watertown Food Pantry, baby items for use at Mary s Room, school supplies distributed as part of Support Our Students, and an annual drive to collect warm coats to donate to Koats for Kids. First Congregational also has a Christmas Adopt a Family initiative. Last year we provided gifts and gift cards to five sponsored families, including 8 adults and 15 children. We also participate in global service through contributions to Our Church s Wider Mission. In 2016, we raised $ for OCWM. In 2017, we have budgeted $ In addition to OCWM, First Congregational is a Wisconsin Conference UCC PAGE 27

5 for 5 church, raising $1029 for One Great Hour of Caring, $25.00 for Strengthen Our Church, $ for Neighbors In Need, and $ for the Christmas Fund. First Congregational s transformational recent service initiative has been the establishment of monthly Dementia Friendly Services. These worship services are held on the 3 rd Sunday of each month. They are intended for the community at large, and are tailored for people in the Watertown area who suffer from dementia. The services are shorter, feature old and familiar hymns, simple gospel explanations, and communion served in the pews. The church advertises these services in the community. Dementia Friendly Services began in coordination with a citywide Dementia Awareness weekend on June 19, First Congregational is the only church in Dodge and Jefferson Counties to conduct Dementia Friendly Services. The services fill a need in the community, and are meaningful to the entire congregation. Describe your congregation s participation in ecumenical and interfaith activities (with other denominations and religious groups, local and regional). First Congregational UCC participates in several ecumenical interfaith activities. Our Pastor participates in the Clergy Round Table, an ecumenical clergy group comprised of several churches in the Watertown community. Ecumenical services are held three times per year. In addition, the Clergy Round table held prayer services following a police shooting and resulting racial strife at Sherman Park in Milwaukee, Another ecumenical activity is Bread and Roses. Bread and Roses is a free meal site at Immanuel Lutheran Church, which is staffed by 26 different Churches, businesses, and fraternal organizations. First Congregational UCC provides volunteers to this endeavor, but does not contribute financial support. A third ecumenical activity is Summer Sandwiches in the Park. During the summer months, First Congregational UCC makes lunches each week and distributes them freely to anyone requiring them. This ministry is supported entirely by loose coin offerings by the congregation, and by silent auction. The amount of annual financial support from our church is approximately $ Summer Sandwiches in the Park is a joint service activity with Christ United Methodist Church, and Good Shepard Lutheran Church. In 2016, approximately 3300 lunches were handed out by our three churches. This program was started by First Congregational Church and has since grown into an ecumenical endeavor. Other ecumenical activities include three blood drives for the Blood Center of SE Wisconsin, and the Weekend Food to Grow and Go project, where bags of food are provided for needy children for their use on weekends. PAGE 28

Describe your congregation s participation in meetings, relationships and activities connecting the wider United Church of Christ (association / conference / national setting). First Congregational UCC is proud that Rob Harms, a member of our congregation, serves on the Board of Directors for the Wisconsin UCC Conference. Laurel Bentz, another member of our congregation, serves on the conference Church Development Renewal committee, which has now been renamed Catalyst. Our congregation also sends delegates to the South East Association meeting and the annual meeting. Check all of the following statements of witness that apply to your UCC faith community. (Find more information on these statements at ucc.org.) _X_ Accessible to All (A2A) Creation Justice Economic Justice Faithful and Welcoming _X_ God Is Still Speaking (GISS) Immigrant Welcoming Inter-cultural/Multi-racial (I M) Just Peace _X_ Global Mission Church _X_ Open and Affirming (ONA) WISE Congregation for Mental Health Other UCC designations: Other similar designations in affiliated denominations None Reflect on what the above statement(s) mean(s) to your community. Is your congregation interested in working toward any of the above statements of witness in the near future? On July 13, 2014, First Congregational voted to become an Open and Affirming Church. When our church adopted ONA, we have taken that to mean everyone, not just those identifying as LGBTQ. So many of these above statements are beliefs that our church holds, but we do not have anything formal in place. We have implemented a dementia friendly service once a month that allows us to worship in a manner that is conducive to those who are experiencing memory loss. These services not only benefit those with dementia, but they benefit all of us, old and young. We sing familiar hymns, have PAGE 29

shorter readings, and a to-the-point sermon. These services have been a blessing to all our church members. Our church council is exploring Immigrant Welcoming in Interest has also been expressed in a program working with autistic children in our community. If your congregation has a mission statement, how does that mission statement compare to the actual time spent engaging in different activities? Think of the range of activities from time spent gathering, to governance, to time spent going out. First Congregational UCC has a Mission Statement that asked that the congregation be welcoming, to accept and respect all people, and to provide a safe and dynamic environment for spiritual growth. We also have adopted a Covenant Statement, that asks that we respect the values of others without judging differences, and that we nurture individual faith journeys. It states that we will care for each other and our greater communities in mind, body and spirit. Our congregation takes these charges to heart. Our Covenant Statement is displayed on the wall of our sanctuary. Reflect on the scope of work assigned to your pastor(s). How is their community ministry and their ministry in and on behalf of the wider church accounted for in the congregation s expectations on their time? Our church s pastor is expected to visit our homebound members. We expect our pastor to be involved with the clergy round table. We also value our pastor s relationship with his/her family and will respect that aspect of their life. MissionInSite Comment on your congregation s MissionInsite report with data for your neighborhood(s) or area. What trends and opportunities are shown? With regards to our Congregation's tendencies compared to national belief/trends we are in contrast to the general population in some categories. For hot topic issues such as legality of abortion, same sex marriage, illegal immigration, and the acceptance of climate change science we lean towards a more liberal viewpoint. Whereas, the national trend on these subjects seems to show a more conservative leaning. Also, for our congregation a concern for the environment is strong, the practice of altruism and giving is very strong and the overall outlook is of a global inclination. This would include justified responsiveness to aggressive acts against our nation. PAGE 30

How do your congregation s internal demographics compare or contrast to a) the neighborhoods adjacent to your church, and b) other neighborhoods with which your church connects? In terms of ethnic/racial mix we are very homogeneous (predominantly White Non- Hispanic), and we are also closely split between white collar and blue collar occupations. Our congregation at First Congregational, like so many other churches is showing some decline in the Church-going population over the past 10 years, but fortunately/ comparatively the decline (-.1%) is lesser compared to our neighboring mainline Protestant Churches (Baptist affiliation down.95%, Lutheran down 1.22%, Methodist affiliation down.91%). Because of the relatively rural nature of our region, the trends stay about the same even as you expand beyond a 10-mile radius. How are the demographics of the community currently shaping ministry, or not? Our Church could be referred to as an oasis within a largely conservative region, and while not unanimous our Congregation did vote by a large majority to adopt an Open and Affirming resolution (ONA), so as not to deny participation or access by anyone that wishes to join our community of faith. What do you hear when you talk to community leaders and ask them what your church is known for? First Congregational United Church of Christ has been an important part of Watertown, Wi since the church was first founded in Community leaders would point to the many service programs that First Congregational either started or participated in. Programs such as Summer Sandwiches in the Park are well known in the community. Our church is also known for hosting an area Boy Scout troop, Gingerbread Daycare, local blood drives, and musicals and plays that are enjoyed by many people in the Watertown community. What do new people in the church say when asked what got them involved? One of the standard questions asked of new members joining the church is what brought them to First Congregational UCC. New members frequently comment about the friendly nature of our congregation, and the strong sense of fellowship. Others have stressed that they appreciate how our church is governed, with everyone having an equal vote, and with women encouraged to take leadership roles in the church. Some new members have pointed to the church being Open PAGE 31
