Dita S STORY Dita, her husband and their seven children depend on the money they earnselling crops from their small farm in Ethiopia. But frequent droughts often mean that families like Dita s who depend on home-grown crops go hungry. And amidst the current, historic drought, more than 10 million people are struggling with hunger. But thanks to a CRS program that helps families prepare for crises like droughts, Dita was able to build a new house and open a small store. Instead of relying solely on what she can grow on her farm, she is able to sell items like pasta, shampoo and bananas. She earns a steady $400 a month. Before, I had to get eggs from my neighbors. Now I have 15 hens, she proclaims. Saving money and being able to borrow not only allowed her to buy hens but also a metal roof for her new house, a rarity for families in this part of Ethiopia. Now we have no problems with food, she says. Unlike families across Ethiopia that struggle to find enough to eat, Dita says her children eat three times a day, thanks to her newfound business knowledge. And what s more, all her children are attending school. When I was a child, there were no education opportunities, she says. Then, with a shy but proud smile, she adds, That s a big difference. Through your Lenten contributions to Operation Rice Bowl, you will be helping an untold number of struggling people like Dita and her family find a better way of life.

A FAMILY PERSPECTIVE by Bud Ozar Our families can become wrapped up chasing things we perceive will make us happy. Jesus words to Lazarus, He says to us: Come out from what entombs you. In this fifth week of Lent untie yourself and be free from unnecessary possessions. Reflections on today s Scriptures The Fifth Sunday of Lent I am the resurrection and the life; whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live. As we draw near to the great feast of Easter, the Church gives us here some food for thought regarding the idea of resurrection and eternal life. Today s Gospel shares the story of a dead man who came to life again by the power of Jesus. Lazarus, who had been lying lifeless in a tomb for four days, came out of the tomb, burial cloths draped around his body, in a moment that must have been absolutely astonishing! This miracle could not have been explained by anything other than divine power over life and death. It s important to consider that this story is not so much about Jesus own resurrection but rather it is about OURS. Jesus uses the occasion of this restoration of his friend, Lazarus, to teach that we ALL can be raised to new life through the power of the Lord. Jesus tells us that we too can overcome death by believing in him: everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Easter, of course, will confirm for us that death has no power over the God of life. But today, during these closing days of Lent, we are reminded that we can share in this source of life by believing in Jesus. So now is a perfect time to double-check our faith in him. Is it authentic? Do we really accept the supernatural reality of who Jesus is? Do we believe that he can conquer even the most frightening moment of human existence: death itself? If we find ourselves falling short of faith in these things, let us turn to the Lord and ask that he will increase our faith so that, with Martha, we can truly say, Yes, Lord. I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God. Gina Loehr 2017 Liturgical Publications Inc. 7 THE FIFTH SUNDAY OF LENT APRIL 2, 2017 Lent: The Fifth Sunday The readings from Sacred Scripture for the Fifth Sunday in Lent bring us face to face with the mystery and the painful reality of death. In fact, all of our readings today and are also ones that can be chosen for a funeral Mass. In the preceding verses of Chapter 37 of the Book of the prophet Ezekiel, Ezekiel has a vision of a valley of dry bones that are brought to life by God s Spirit. Then our reading begins (Ezekiel 37: 12-14) as we hear the prophecy that God will open the graves and raise His people. This prophecy, is of course, fulfilled in Jesus death and resurrection. Saint Paul, in his letter to the Romans (Romans 8: 6-11), brings home this point as he writes that those who are dead to sin can be alive through righteousness and that the Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead will also give life to our mortal bodies. On another level, he also wishes to remind us that it is the Spirit that animates and gives life to our body. In the Gospel (John 11: 1-45), we hear of the last and greatest of the seven signs worked by Jesus that St. John, in his Gospel, wishes us to see: Jesus raising Lazarus from the dead. Jesus is indeed the resurrection and the life. As we read about the death of Jesus friend Lazarus, we also encounter the full and familiar spectrum of human emotions that accompany loss and bereavement. Take, for example, Lazarus two sisters Mary and Martha. Mary is so upset that she cannot leave the house, whereas Martha, ever practical, greets Jesus and questions him. We meet another human reaction when some in the crowd shake their heads and pointedly ask why Jesus did not save his friend. Human reality and emotions. We should also grasp the full reality of Lazarus death. The fact that he has been in the tomb for four days means that he is decomposing (Jesus is warned of the stench) and it was a belief that the spirit truly leaves the body after three days. Jesus has raised others such as the daughter of Jairus or the son of the widow of Nain, but they had been dead for just a few hours. What will happen this time? Jesus becomes the focus as he works this last great sign. There is a beautiful interplay between the humanity and the divinity of Jesus in the Gospel. A prayer from the Mass today puts it well: for as true man he wept for Lazarus his friend and as eternal God raised him from the tomb. Humanly, Jesus is deeply moved (we might translate his feeling as gut wrenching!) and we have those two, short, profound words that Jesus wept. Interestingly, several different and powerful words are used to describe Jesus emotions and these are rare in John s Gospel. They also occur later on when Jesus is betrayed and when he hangs upon the cross. Jesus has indeed experienced all that humans can feel; not as a pretense or show but really: grief, death, betrayal, abandonment, pain, hunger and thirst. He is our brother. But Jesus is truly God. Jesus has already given one of the I am sayings that we find in John s Gospel to show his divinity. He calls Lazarus out of the tomb and restores Lazarus to life. The bonds of death (symbolized in the burial bands that enwrap Lazarus) are undone and he is released and free again. We might also say that he restores Martha and Mary back to new life too, for the death of a loved one can make us die inside. The artist Caravaggio in his 1609 painting of the scene captures this so beautifully. A discolored, pale, rigid and lifeless Lazarus is held tenderly by his grieving sister; but in this, they will be the first to experience the warmth returning to his body and that first breath of new life. Jesus is our resurrection and life. Our readings, of course, remind us of our faith in the promise of resurrection when our life s journey is complete. This new life is not just for the future however. Jesus, the resurrection and the life, brings life to us now when our spirit is dying and so unbinds us from things that hold us in bondage such as addictions, anger, bitterness or hurts. Let us repeat Martha s words: yes Lord, I believe
