8 Baptized with the Spirit Emerson s poetry signaled an important shift in American religious thought, away from the words of Scripture toward natural spirituality. Human beings reveal strange inner contrasts. We waver between the emotional and the empirical. At times we just want to feel things, and at times we want definitely to know things. Sometimes we want an internal experience, and sometimes we want external proof. Unfortunately, these otherwise wonderful impulses as with all human inclinations can confuse or mislead.

17 The Promised Spirit While some may not even realize they have been baptized with the Spirit (see 1 Corinthians 3:16), and while some may show little evidence of the Spirit as was the case in the carnal Corinthian church Paul writes quite emphatically that if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ (Romans 8:9). That is, if one has not received the Spirit, one is not a Christian.
