1 Monday April 3,2017 Bonjour Welcome to edition number 45 of the newsletter of Stand Up for Europe. New member in our Support Committee! Marc Franco joins us this month. He was advisor for EBRD in Egypt (2012) and previously Ambassador, Head of the European Union Delegation to Egypt ( ) and Head of the European Commission's Delegation to Russia ( ). In his career at the European Commission, he held various positions including Deputy Director-General of the DG EuropeAid ( ) and Director for the Cohesion Fund and Structural Pre-Accession Instrument in the DG for Regional Development ( ). In the period he was Head of Unit in the Department dealing with Enlargement. Before, he worked as a development economist, mainly concentrating on Africa and rural development. He started his career in the University of Leuven ( ), continued as Associate Expert of the UN in Upper Volta and Senegal ( ), as PhD researcher at the University of Cambridge ( ) and as official of the European Commission ( ).

2 Our Support Committee broadens again! Roberto Sommella is an economic journalist and currently the Director for external and institutional relations of the Italian Competition Authority (AGCM). A graduate in Political Sciences with a final thesis on Schumpeter, he is an expert in public finance and European policies and was head of the economic newsroom of the news agency ANSA for twelve years. As co-editor of the daily newspaper Milano Finanza he led a battle to cut the Italian public debt and followed the various phases of the 2008 financial crisis. He is the founder of "La Nuova Europa", a non-profit association that aims to spread the values of solidarity in the EU. He publishes his opinions in the Corriere della Sera, Il Messaggero, Milano Finanza and europaquotidiano.it. Roberto Sommella is the author and promoter of the Antitrust campaign "Conosci i tuoi diritti" ("Know your Rights"), in co-operation with the European Commission and the Italian Ministry of Education. He has published a number of books, amongst which ''Euxit, uscita di sicurezza per l'europa'' (2016), "Sboom. Sappiamo ancora sostenere il cambiamento?"(2015), "L'Euro è di tutti" (2014), with a preface by Matteo Renzi, and "I Veleni di Op" (1995). He is the curator of a blog in the Huffington Post.

3 Stand Up was marching for Europe all over the EU! The 25th of March 2017 marked the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, the Treaty establishing the European Economic Community. While in the last six decades European integration has made incredible steps forward, today the European Union remains an incomplete construction at risk of unravelling under the pressure of multiple crisis and the rise of populism and nationalism in many countries. That's why we were present in the streets in many cities all over the EU to speak up for our project. We were there in Rome, Brussels, London, Berlin,... Find some pictures here below:

4 Stand Up and SFE in the European Parliament! The 60 years of the Treaty of Rome was the momentum used by the European Parliament to open itself to a citizen debate on today's important topics.with the participation of several MEP's and the President of the EP himself, our Stand Up - Students for Europe delegation made their voice heard through various interventions in the hemicycle. 5 Commissioner Moscovici at Saint-Louis! Conference with Pierre Moscovici, EU Commissioner for Economic and Monetary Affairs "What prospects for the European economy?" The Students for Europe Saint-Louis university society are pleased to invite you to the conference with EU Commissioner Pierre Moscovici around the issue "What prospects for the European economy?" at Saint-Louis University on April, 26th. Following a short introduction by professor Denis Duez from the Institute of European Studies, Mr. Moscovici will talk about his role and action as a member of the Commission. In the aftermath of the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome, he will address the European economic situation, his priorities towards the fight against tax evasion and boosting growth, as well as his proposals to improve the governance of the Euro-zone. 6 Stand Up has already accomplished a lot! Constitution of a Support Committee composed of over 80 people from a number of different areas (including art, culture, entrepreneurs, politics, science, etc.) who will promote Stand Up's project. Growing the number of members (already over 1000!) Developing our movement on social media (already more than followers on Facebook!) Drafting several thematic text on the key issues of our movement A strategic partnership with the European Society for Defence to promote a common European defence policy Sending out monthly newsletters Creating an Editorial Committee to write Op'eds and tickets in the press Creating partnerships with other pro-european groups, and media focused on European affairs (Vox Europ and Euractiv) Creation of the Students for Europe university groups/societies Launching local Stand Up chapters Organising conferences and debates Creating the Nouvel Européen ( an e-magazine aiming to promote the advantages of a European federation for citizens through fictional articles inspired by current affairs Preparing a citizen's initiative on the refugee crisis, with the goal of getting over a million signatures so that the proposal can be debated by the European Parliament Working with BOZAR to create a work of art uniting 27 European artists (one per country) which will symbolise European unity and solidarity, rich in its diversity Approaching other federalist movements, currently quite fragmented, inciting them to unite their forces to step up their presence in debates over the future of Europe Le Nouvel Européen : the media to follow! 7 ERASMUS...PAPYRUS. "AFTER ERASMUS...PAPYRUS, THE EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT HAS DECIDED TO GET INVOLVED"- published on the 5th of March 2017 in Le Nouvel Européen. "We need a stronger Europe, an exemplary Europe that functions, a Europe being closer to its citizens and inspiring them trust, a Europe that speaks the same language and that promises to unify big projects. Stand Up trending in the Press! "IF ONLY MR. JUNCKER'S PAPER WERE A BIT LESS WHITE..." Article written by Georgios Kostakos, Member of the Executive Board of Stand Up for Europe: "As he had promised in his "State of the Union" address to the European Parliament last September, Jean-Claude Juncker, the European Commission President, made public on 1 March a White Paper on the future of Europe. The paper describes the difficulties faced by the EU sixty years after the historic Rome Treaties that led to its creation, but also underlines the many achievements that have made possible today's peaceful and relatively prosperous Union of 28 countries and more than 500 million people."
