7 Tips Fr Leading Small Grups Over the years I have fund the fllwing guidelines and tips t be helpful in creating intimacy and cmfrt in the small grup setting. Be in prayer. Dn t try t d this n yur wn. Bring yur peple, yur preparatins and yu fears befre the Lrd. Be prepared. If yu re leading a grup that is ding a study tgether, have it dne ahead f time. Knw the material well enugh t have sme supplement questins prepared in case cnversatin falls flat. If yu re leading an Embrace grup have yur questins printed ut, cut and n the table ready t g befre yur grup arrives. Demnstrate vulnerability. If yu as the leader are nt willing t shw sme grwing pains and weaknesses in yur life n ne in yur grup will either. Set the standard. Learn the art f silence as yu lead Dn t ccupy the time with yur vice. Give the grup a chance t prcess the questins, and the pen quiet space t get brave enugh t speak up. After reading a questin, I challenge yu t slwly cunt (in yur head) t secnds befre speaking. Scary I knw! But if yu rush int the silent mment with cmmentary r answers ding s may deliver a message t grup members that this isn t their time t share, and it s just fr the leader t teach. Typically small grups aren t suppsed t be that way. Leaders shuld truly facilitate, create the envirnment and guide the grup thrugh the time, nt teach the entire time. Be faithful and hnring t wh des shw up. Smetimes we want t cancel when we knw many grup members can t cme. But canceling shuld be avided as it may deliver a message t thse that are available, a message that says meeting tgether is nly wrth it if s-and-s is there. Hnr thse that are available, demnstrating that yu value yur time with them. Als remember, that nt everyne will be able t be there every time, but it s still imprtant t meet. Discipleship 7

8 Tips Fr Leading Small Grups cntinued Dn t frce it. If the cnversatin is just nt taking ff, dn t push it and dn t insist everyne answers every questin. When things just aren t wrking that day, just casually say, well let s mve nt smething else. This is where being prepared cmes int play. This culd be an pprtunity t try anther cmmunity creating activity. One I suggest is using ut prayers f intercessin resurce. Again, just casually say, well let s mve nt smething else. After everyne gets their riginal frm back, invite anyne t share abut their request. Again, practice the art f silence and give space fr smene t share. Cunt t 15! One brave sul may be the ne that leads yur grup int a special and tender time f sharing. A few minr but significant things t keep in mind! Keep the grup n larger than 8, any larger peple will get lst in the grup. Sit in a way where everyne is facing each ther, whether in a circle r arund a table. If there is a secnd rw because there are s many peple it s prbably time t split and create tw grups. Dn t becme discuraged when there aren t any ww mments that day. Smetimes there will be awkward mments r days when it s just tw r three f yu, r days when yu didn t feel the grup cnnecting but dn t give up, that is nt a reasn t declare this isn t wrking. Keep trying, praying and trusting. If yu re pursuing Him and acting in bedience, He s gt yu right where He wants yu.
