1. Ceremony of Welcoming the Relic HYMN [When the Casket enters in procession, there is an appropriate hymn or people pause in recollection. The words should highlight the wonders of God wrought in his servant Don Bosco.] PLACEMENT OF THE CASKET [Side location or angled sideways in respect to the altar. Everyone makes the sign of the Cross, while the priest says] In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. GREETING [The priest greets those present with the following words or other similar words, preferably drawn from the Scriptures] The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, crown of all the Saints, the love of God our Father, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you. R. And also with you, [or some other appropriate greeting] INTRODUCTORY WORDS [The priest or another suitable minister introduces the welcoming rite in these or similar words:] Dearly beloved, the welcome rite we are about to celebrate by exposing the Casket containing the relics of St John Bosco for public veneration, in the first place, gives glory to God, the source of all holiness. Let us prepare our 1

hearts to understand the true meaning of this celebration. By presenting the relics for veneration by the faithful, holy Mother the Church wishes to place before us the image of those who, led by the Holy Spirit, followed Jesus in life and in death, so that by lifting up our gaze to heaven we may see the way the Saints achieved perfect union with Christ. They are friends and heirs of the Lord Jesus, at the same time, our models and patrons. They love us, come to our aid, intercede for us, because of the mysterious bond of communion between the pilgrim members of the Church on earth and those who have already entered the heavenly Jerusalem. 2 OR Welcome to our celebration. This visit of the relic of St. John Bosco is very special to all who have heard about and prayed to this great saint of modern times. He is the patron of youth. He is a Father and Teacher for us all. During his lifetime, Don Bosco proved himself a loyal son of the Church by defending her from her many enemies and by helping her spread out by sending missionaries to take Christ s message of hope to the young and the poor in far away places. And yet, Don Bosco himself did not travel too far out of his native Italy. Now, in death, he is present in a special way to people all over the globe, including our gathering here today. Let us now stand and pray that we may imitate St. John Bosco in following Jesus Christ and in working assiduously for the good the Church. PRAYER Let us pray. Lord God, in your providence you gave us Saint John Bosco, father and teacher of the young, who worked with tireless zeal, under the guidance of the Virgin

Mary, for the good of the Church; arouse in us the same apostolic charity, which will urge us to serve you, our one and only good, and seek the salvation of our brothers and sisters. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, your Son, who is God and who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, for ever and ever. READING OF THE WORD OF GOD [A reader or one of those present reads one or more texts from the Sacred Scriptures, choosing by preference from those offered in the Roman Missal or Liturgy of the Hours, either from the Common or Proper of Saints, inserting an appropriate response or moment of silence between the readings. The reading of the Gospel is always given the place of honour. Also the following text could be read.] 1 st Reading: Ez 34:11-12, 15-16, 23-24, (1 st Reading from the Proper of St John Bosco) Responsorial Psalm Psalm 33: R. Blessed be the Lord, the glory of his Saints. Gospel: Mt 18: (Gospel from the Proper of St John Bosco) HOMILY PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL [These or similar prayers may be read by children, youth, teachers or families according to circumstances. Prayer in the form of a litany may also be used like those in the Liturgy of the Hours, since they are better followed by the people.] 3

In this celebration in honour of the Father and Teacher of the young, we address our prayer to God the Father, who is always ready to hear the prayers of his children. R. Lord, hear our prayer. 1. For the Pope, bishops, priests and deacons: that they may proclaim the Gospel of truth and joy through generous witnessing to their calling, we pray to the Lord. 2. For all people of good will: that their commitment to a better world may be based on an ardent and disinterested love, we pray to the Lord. 3. For the Salesians and the Members of the Salesian Family that by imitating St John Bosco in his wholehearted service of the young, they may learn to form in them the true image of Christ, we pray to the Lord. 4. For neglected, marginalised young people lacking ideals and aspirations: that they may find in every follower of St John Bosco a real friend to help them construct their life according to the Gospel, we pray to the Lord. 5. For all those involved in the Christian education of the young: that they may find in this holy Patron a teacher and guide to inspire them in their mission, we pray to the Lord. 6. For all of us gathered here around the Casket of St John Bosco: that with him as a model for holiness we may be committed each day to striving after holiness while carrying out the Gospel teaching of love and service so that one day we may be welcomed into the Lord s presence, we pray to the Lord. 7. Other intentions 4

OUR FATHER FINAL PRAYER [The priest, arms extended, proclaims this prayer] O God source of all grace and holiness, look with love on your faithful people who have welcomed this relic of St John Bosco, friend and zealous apostle of Christ and faithful witness of the Gospel: may we experience the power of his intercession. Through Christ our Lord. INCENSATION [The celebrant venerates the Casket with incense. Following this some young people may decorate the Casket symbolically with flowers and lamps, or with two appropriate sentences chosen from the Gospel and from the writings of the Saint.] CONCLUSION The priest extends his hands over those present saying: May God who gave us in St John Bosco a sign of His love and protection deign to let His face shine on each one of us gathered here. Through the intercession of St John Bosco, may God free us from present evils, and help us to live according to the Gospel, in the service of God and our brothers and sisters. 5

May you enjoy with Mary, Queen of Saints, the joy and peace of the Homeland, where you will rejoice in eternity in the glorious communion of all the Blessed. And may the blessing of Almighty God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, descend on you, and with you remain forever. HYMN [In honour of St John Bosco] For you I study, for you I work, for you I live, for you I am ready even to give my life. [Don Bosco] I have promised God that I would give of myself to my last breath for my poor boys. [Don Bosco] 6

2. Celebration of Handing Over [This celebration may take place at the conclusion of the Thankgiving Mass taken from the Proper of St John Bosco. After the post communion prayer the following schema is possible. Introduction Prayer of thanks Handing over the Casket to those taking it from here or those receiving it from another community. Final blessing] PRAYER AFTER COMMUNION O Father, you have nourished us with this sacrament of salvation. May we imitate the tireless efforts of St John Bosco to bring the young to the love of Christ your Son,the inexhaustible source of new life. We ask you this through Christ our Lord. INTRODUCTORY WORDS [The priest or another suitable minister introduces the rite of handing over.] PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING Almighty and eternal God, we thank you for the gift of St John Bosco, father and teacher of the young. Bless these your faithful who have come with such devotion to see and venerate his relics and to ask him to intercede with You. Free them from every affliction of body and mind, look after them in your mercy here and everywhere and keep them in your grace, so that they may deserve to come to the joy of Paradise. Bless and guard all the faithful who visit this Casket and pray to St John Bosco so that they may come to You, Father, who proclaim through the life of your Saints, the wonders of our Lord Jesus Christ. We ask you this through Christ our Lord. 7

INCENSATION [The celebrant venerates the Casket with incense.] HANDING OVER The celebrant greets the representatives of the community who will next receive the Casket of the Saint and invites them to receive the solemn blessing which will accompany them on the journey. SOLEMN BLESSING May the Lord, author of all good, protect you always with his grace and make you faithful to the promises of your baptism. May Christ the Good Shepherd grant that you may serve your brothers and sisters in joy following the example of St John Bosco. To you, who are about to receive the relics of St John Bosco, may the Lord grant the grace to walk in faith, hope and love. And may the blessing of Almighty God, Father, Son + and Holy Spirit, descend on you, and remain with you forever. 8 Education is a matter of the heart. [Don Bosco]

3. Don Bosco Meets Children HYMN [To Don Bosco] All make the Sign of the Cross, while the priest says: In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. GREETING [After the following or similar words, the priest greets the children with appropriate words, explaining the meaning of the gestures and prayers that are to follow.] The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, crown of all the Saints, the love of God our Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you. R. And also with you. [Here, if appropriate, one could insert a simple reading from the OT, on the Prophet Samuel as a young man, who accepted the call of God and the need to listen and for help to understand the call. There could also be a simple psalm of repetition. The story could also be the basis for the homily and comments]. A READING FROM THE LIFE OF THE SAINT [A short excerpt could be drawn from the first part of this aid dedicated to children. Our proposal is the paragraph: A dream which changed his life, or: God s little juggler. If the prayer event is for pre adolescents then the paragraph of choice could be A providential inconvenience, or: The Happy Club, drawn from the second part of the same document.] 9

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The Gospel is announced with the singing of the alleluia. Gospel: Mt 18: (Gospel from the Proper of St John Bosco or another according to choice) HOMILY SIGN [Some youngsters bring a vase containing earth and a container with wheat seeds in front of the Casket. The priest then says these or similar words. The sign could be altered according to the circumstances.] Dear young friends, You have heard how St John Bosco, even from his childhood, put his life at the service of others for love of the Lord. To do everything that Jesus asked of him, he made many sacrifices and reaped a rich harvest. We could say that Don Bosco was consumed with love for others. These grains of wheat too, in order to grow and bear fruit have to be sacrificed: in fact they have to die in the ground in order to become plants. We also wish to live for others like young John Bosco. We also should become like grains of wheat ready to be planted, ready to act courageously and make sacrifices so that we may grow and bear much fruit for the greater glory of God. [While the youngsters line up to plant their grain of wheat, there can be a suitable hymn.] PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL [This is a good chance for the children to prepare simple prayers for the occasion and read them out, without reference to other formulas for adults.] 10

The Lord s Prayer follows Our Father PRAYER OF BLESSING [The priest, arms extended, says this prayer of blessing:] O God source of all grace and holiness, look with love on these children who have prayed at the relics of St John Bosco, friend and guide of the young, faithful witness to the Gospel: may they experience the power of his intercession at the throne of your glory, so that they too may become friends of the Lord and bear abundant fruits of love. Through Christ our Lord. INCENSATION [The celebrant venerates the Casket with incense. After this prayer some children may symbolically decorate the Casket with flowers and lamps, or with two sentences chosen appropriately from the Gospel and from the writings of the Saint.] CONCLUSION [The priest extends his hands over those present saying:] May God, glory and joy of your faithful servants, who in St John Bosco gave us a wonderful sign of your love, let his face shine on us. May the intercession of St John Bosco help you to be good, and may his example urge you to live according to the Gospel, and cultivate friendship with Jesus and Mary, to serve God and your brothers and sisters in love. 11

May you enjoy the joy and peace of Paradise with Mary, Queen of Saints. And may the blessing of Almighty God, Father, Son and + Holy Spirit, descend on you, and remain with you forever. HYMN [In honour of St John Bosco] In those things which are for the benefit of young people in danger or which serve to win souls, I push ahead even to the extent of recklessness. [Don Bosco] 12

4. Don Bosco Meets the Salesian Community HYMN [To Don Bosco] [All make the Sign of the Cross, while the priest says:] In the name of the Father, and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, crown of all the Saints, the love of God our Father and the communion of the Holy Spirit, be with you. R. And also with you. A READING FROM THE LIFE OF THE SAINT [Something taken from the first part for adults. Our proposal is the paragraph on Contemplation in action, or: Mama Margaret and the new family. According to circumstances you could choose sections from the Biographical Memoirs, especially those regarding the extraordinary graces granted to the Saint.] GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The Gospel is announced by singing the alleluia. Gospel: Mt 18:1-6,10 (Gospel from the Proper of St John Bosco or other according to choice) HOMILY SIGN [If it is opportune, you could think of a sign to help people understand better the Casket s presence. You could give them 13

a sheet of paper containing the basic elements of the Casket s pilgrimage and its significance, explained at length in the second part of this aid, or with a prayer to Don Bosco which recalls the prayer of thanksgiving for the handing over. This sign could also be left out.] PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL [Drawn from the adult set of prayers or proposed for the occasion]. OUR FATHER PRAYER OF BLESSING [The priest, arms extended, says this prayer of blessing:] O God, source of all grace and holiness, look with love on this community which has prayed at the relics of St John Bosco, friend and heir of Christ, faithful witness to the Gospel: may we experience the effectiveness of his intercession at the throne of your glory, so that we too may become heirs of the Lord and bearers of the fruits of love. Through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. INCENSATION [The celebrant venerates the Casket with incense. After this, some youngsters may symbolically decorate the Casket with flowers and lamps.] CONCLUSION [The priest extends his hands over those present saying:] May God, glory and joy of your faithful servants who gave us a sign of his protection in St John Bosco, let his face shine on us. 14

May the intercession of St John Bosco free us from present evils, and may his example urge us to live according to the Gospel, in the service of God and our brothers and sisters. May you enjoy the joy and peace of our heavenly home with Mary, Queen of Saints, where the Church rejoices in eternity in the glorious communion of all her children. And may the blessing of Almighty God, Father, Son and + Holy Spirit, descend on you, and with you remain forever. HYMN [in honour of St John Bosco] The youngsters should not only be loved, but they themselves should know that they are loved. [Don Bosco] 15

5. Don Bosco Meets the Young: Prayer Vigil [Organising this depends a lot on the local situation at the time. The cultural context is important as well as the nature of the group of young people taking part in the Vigil. In this case we are not offering a detailed rite but a general criteria and possible themes. 1. The following could alternate 2. A hymn 3. Reading of psalms (reminding us of Don Bosco s life) 4. Reading of episodes from the life of the saint 5. Reading of the Word of God (giving prime place to the Gospel) 6. Readings from the Saint s writings 7. Signs 8. Audiovisual: projection, video (being careful not to end up going beyond the immediate topic. We suggest the possibility of building the Vigil around a theme. Here are some possibilities. Don Bosco as a spiritual guide You could use the outline of reflection for youth-adults. You could insert excerpts where Don Bosco speaks of the importance of his guidance, from either this set of materials or from the Memoirs of the Oratory. Alternate moments of listening with moments for reflection where the young people are invited to question themselves on the basis of questions given them. 16

a) Don Bosco s life as mission You could also keep using the outline of reflections for youth adults. You could put in excerpts where Don Bosco speaks of the importance of choices made for the future, or about work and study today which prepares us for daily apostolate and for the mission of tomorrow. b) Don Bosco and the project of life You could use the outline of the reflections for adolescents and young people. Dealing with the idea of sacrifice, maybe with some readings, keeping in mind sections like: A providential inconvenience and His years at the Seminary. If conditions are right, and according to opportunity, you could think of including an occasion for Eucharistic Adoration as the highpoint of prayer, where we thank God for the gift of St John Bosco and ask the Saint to intercede for us.] Love what the youth loves and they will love what you love. [Don Bosco] 17

HYMNS TO ST. JOHN BOSCO No. 1 - WE THANK YOU, O LORD We thank you, O Lord, for Don Bosco, In him we see the wonders of your love. You filled him with gifts of nature and of grace To lead young people to their home above. He was a man profoundly human, Open to the signs of the times. And yet he was a man, He was a man of God. Enable us to be his doubles, Faithful to the service of youth; Overcoming hardship with firmness, With hearts filled with your love. No. 2 - O DON BOSCO, HEAR THY CHILDREN O Don Bosco, hear thy children, From this vale calling on thee. Here we come thy aid imploring, Thou who knowest our misery. Strengthen us lest we be falling, When we fight God s enemy; And if fallen, help us calling On the Lord s benignity. Do remain with us, Don Bosco, Do thou guide thy children still; With thy soothing, healing presence, In our hearts God s love instill. On to Mary do thou lead us, As thou didst thy sons of old; There in one reunited chorus We shall sing God s grace untold. 18

No. 3 - HYMN TO DON BOSCO To work among the poor and young O Lord we ve heard your call. As living signs of your designs, Don Bosco leads us all. We live for you and all we do, We do for you alone We see you when we work for all, We know they are your own. So help us, Lord, to go towards Our great Salesian goal. Don Bosco leads, our prayers and deeds We re one in heart and soul. Don Bosco, guide, with us abide Inspiring us each day, Don Bosco, we will follow thee On our Salesian way. No. 4 - FROM THY PLACE From thy place amongst the angels O er thy children thou art bending; And in thy paternal fondness To their simple prayer attending. O celestial protector Of our youth from vice and sadness, Down into our hearts thou pourest All the peace of purest gladness. O Don Bosco, O Don Bosco, Accept the hymn of loving praise We raise to thee, Crowned in glory, On the wings of faith and love And joy for aye. 19

No. 5 - SAINT OF JOY Like the stars in heaven Shining high above; Youth to Christ now leading Strong in faith and love. Saint of joy the sweetest, Friend of youth the purest, Keep us ever near our Lord. Help us love our Mother More than any other And to gain a bright reward. May thy courage help us, In life s battlefield; May we never falter And to sin ne er yield. Tis to thee, Don Bosco, That in need we fly; Save our souls, we pray thee, Cheer us, when we die. One day high in glory Tis our hope to meet, Thee and Mother Mary And her Son to greet. No. 6 - LET US SING OF OUR FATHER Let us sing of our Father the glory, With our hearts full of love and devotion. Let us tell the magnificent story, Of his life and his wonderful deeds. 20

All his children his altar surrounding, Lift their hearts to their Guide and their Father, And their strain is a hymn never ending That resounds through the land and the sea. O Don Bosco, thy name is a vision. O Don Bosco, thy cry is a slogan. O Don Bosco, thy sons are a legion, And thou art their example and light. On the flag of this glorious battalion, Stands the Virgin on us sweetly smiling, And the motto so pressing e er shining, Give me souls, take away all the rest. It s the cry that incites to the conquest, It s the call that drew legions of youngsters To the heart of the kindest of masters, To the feet of the greatest of kings. No. 7 - RAISE YOUR VOICES Raise your voices and sing the praises of the Father of all youth. How he loved them and ever sought them, Turn d their heart toward their God. Mother Mary, exalt thy servant, How he loved thee and praised thy name. Hearken to our humble voices And share with him thy glory. Don Bosco be with us, Don Bosco watch o er us, Don Bosco for ever our model be. 21

No. 8 - ALL HAIL TO YOU, DON BOSCO All hail to you, Don Bosco, Father and guide of youth. We come to you Don Bosco, Off ring our love and praise. We are your sons in the Church, Signs and bearers of God s love, For young people who need care, Who feel so abandoned, so aimless and lost, Don Bosco, guide and bless our work. You have taught us cheerfulness, As a means of holiness. You have given us Mary, As mother, consoler, protector and help. Don Bosco, guide and bless our work. You are proclaimed by the Church, Father, Teacher of the youth. Reason, rel gion, loving kindness, The pillars of your system, solid and sure. Don Bosco, guide and bless our work. 22 He (Don Bosco) took no step, he said no word, he took up no task that was not directed to the saving of the young... Truly the only concern of his heart was for souls. [Don Rua about Don Bosco].

PRAYERS PRAYER 1: O merciful God, in your loving providence you have given us in St John Bosco, a father and teacher of youth who, with the help of the Virgin Mary, worked with tireless zeal for the good of the Church. Enkindle in us the same flame of love that impel us to work for the salvation of souls and to serve you alone. Through Christ our Lord. Amen. PRAYER 2: O Saint John Bosco, father and teacher of youth, you who laboured so much for the salvation of souls, be our guide in seeking the good of our souls, and the salvation of our neighbour. Help us to conquer our passions and all human respect; teach us to love Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament, Mary Help of Christians, and our Holy Father, the Pope, and obtain for us from God the grace of a happy death so that we may all be gathered together in heaven. Amen. PRAYER 3: Novena prayer in honour of St. John Bosco Saint John Bosco, father and teacher of the young, in need of special help, I appeal with confidence to you, for I require not only spiritual graces, but also temporal ones, and particularly... (add your personal intentions here) 23

May you, who on earth had such great devotion to Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament and to Mary Help of Christians, and who always had compassion for those who were suffering, obtain from Jesus and His Heavenly Mother, the grace I now request, and also a sincere resignation to the Will of God. (Recite the Our Father, Hail Mary, and Glory Be) Prayer No. 4 Saint John Bosco, Father and Teacher of youth, docile to the gifts of the Spirit and open to the reality of your times, you were for the young, especially the little ones and the poor, a sign of the love and the special care of God. Be our guide as we walk the path of friendship with the Lord Jesus, so that we may discover in Him and in his Gospel, the meaning of our lives and the source of true happiness. Help us to respond with generosity to the vocation we have received from God, so that in daily life we may be builders of communion, and may collaborate with enthusiasm, and in communion with the whole Church, in creating a civilisation of love. Obtain for us the grace of perseverance in living a high standard of Christian life, according to the spirit of the beatitudes; and grant that, guided by Mary Help of Christians, we may one day be with you in the great family of heaven. Amen [Don Pascual Chavez] 24
