2 Bulletin Board THANK YOU! Thank you so much for the wonderful quilt for my graduation! It will be greatly used as I enter a new chapter in my life. You are amazing and I am blessed to be part of a great congregation. Stephanie Welke Thank you guys so much for all you taught me and have done for me. Without my Grace family I wouldn t be the person I am today. Also, thank you for the gorgeous quilt. It truly means a lot to me. I am going to always have it as a reminder of all you done for me. Love, Tricia (Kubitschek) Thank you for the quilt. It was very nice and it so fitting with hunting and fishing. Sincerely, Chase Hilgendorf THANK YOU Dear friends, I want to thank everyone at Grace for your prayers, for the visits from Pastor Don, Pastor Karla and Pastor Mark for his encouragement and understanding. I am very appreciative of being the first to use mealtrain.com thanks to Debbie and Leanne Setlak who suggested we try it. (Good suggestion Leanne!) Thanks to all who brought meals and planned to until I decided to stop being spoiled. There are very good cooks at Grace, although I don't wish anyone sick or to fall and break a shoulder, I recommend using mealtrain.com if needed. Thanks to everyone who sent cards, phone calls and sharing their love and concern. I am humbled to see God's work through all of you. God's Blessings, Darlene Weirick Attention Youth Grades Six to Twelve! 3 A WORD FROM PASTOR KARLA While the delegation from Grace will be visiting and working with the people of the Lekubu Parish, Madikwe Circuit, during their time in South Africa, I will be visiting the Moretele Circuit. Indeed, I will have the honor of representing the Shawano Conference and Lutheran Social Services of WI and Upper MI/Homme while I am there. Homme Youth and Family Programs, where I serve as Chaplain, and my home congregation, Redeemer, Wittenberg, are in the Shawano Conference, which is paired with the Moretele Circuit. Compared with the WI River Valley Conference, of which Grace is a part, the Shawano Conference is in its infancy stages as far as the development of their companion synod relationship. I am looking forward to helping this partnership grow! While visiting there, I will introduce Shawano Conference congregations and their ministries, as well as LSS Homme, to the people of the Moretele Circuit, using PowerPoint presentations I ve developed. The first deals with Life in Shawano Congregations and the second, LSS Homme. I will also do the same when I return to Wisconsin, showing my conference the PowerPoint, Life in the Moretele Circuit. Retired Pastor James Primley, Homme Home of Wittenberg, has donated a ewer, communion chalice, paten and flagon which I will present to Moretele s Dean Senna as gifts on behalf of the Shawano Conference. Pastor Primley explained that the communion ware is from Bethlehem Lutheran, Merrill, where he was called to serve, way back when, specifically with the idea of closing the church which he did thirty years later! The communion ware predates Pastor Primley's time at Bethlehem and is likely of Swedish origin. The pastors of the Moretele congregations will also be receiving beautiful Native American bead work made by members of the Mohican Tribe from Lutheran Church of the Wilderness, Bowler. I thank God for this opportunity to accompany brothers and sisters in Christ of South Africa and look forward to developing our partnership in the Gospel! (And thanks to my Mom for making this trip a reality through the practice of good stewardship of her gifts while she lived on earth.) Calling all crafters! We are looking for people to make six of your favorite item and donate them for the craft sale during the annual Cookie Walk in December. New ideas are always needed and welcome. Call Barb Schiltz at with any questions. Thank you...and think Christmas in July! HELP! Our Plants Need YOU! We are looking for anyone to help us water our outdoor gardens around the church and Grace House. Soaker hoses are already in the beds in some areas. Free training is available. It doesn't take long. Please sign up on the sheets in the Gathering Area. Even if you can only help out once, it is greatly appreciated!! Call Julie Dentler with any questions or to set up training. 4 and Faith Formation God has been busy in Grace s search for a Youth Ministry Facilitator! The Interview Committee, the church staff, and the Executive Committee of Council have agreed to hire four individuals to make up an entire team of people to work with our young people and their families. My name is Wendy (Osness) Black and I will serve as Grace s new Youth Ministry Facilitator. I grew up in this congregation and am thrilled to be back! My husband, Forrest (Butch), and I live in Harshaw and have 2 grown sons and 4 grandchildren. I worked at Trinity Lutheran in Rhinelander for 9 years as the Parish Worker/Youth Director. For the past 14 years, I served as the Youth Ministry Coordinator for the Northern Great Lakes Synod. My experience has given me a deep understanding of the importance of encouraging young people to not just go to church, but to BE the church today. I am passionate about raising up new leaders and empowering families to have a more active role in the faith formation of their children. I look forward to overseeing all the activities and opportunities Grace provides for children, youth, families, and young adults. The other members of the Youth Ministry Team are familiar faces around Grace. Patti Gaedtke will be the Director of Children s Ministries and will work with children from birth to 7th grade. Mindy Gabrich will be the Director of Confirmation and Technology and will work with our confirmation program, as well as the coordinator/support person for all the technology we use at Grace. Margie Welke will be the Director of High School and Young Adult ministries and will work with post-confirmation youth through high school graduation and into the young adult years. These part-time positions, which officially begin on July 1, are temporary until next February at which time Council will determine the plans for the future. I will be in the office on Wednesday afternoons/evenings and several other times throughout the week (days still to be determined). So please stop by and say hello I d love the chance to visit with you! July 8 to 12 Day Camp for children & youth that have completed 4k through grade six. 6 This letter was sent to Pastor Mark Ziemer from Bishop Jim Justman. Dear Friend in Christ, Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ. 1 Corinthians 1:3 My prayers and best wishes are with you as you travel to our Companion Diocese in Southern Africa. Please greet the people you meet from the people of our East Central Synod and assure them of our prayers for them and their ministries as well. It is my hope that you will listen well to their stories and learn about their ministries. They have much to teach us. It will be good to experience their faithfulness and bring those seeds of hope back to your congregation and our synod so that we might learn and grow from their wisdom as well. May our good and gracious God guide your journey with safe travel, creative sharing and meaningful encounters with your Brothers and Sisters in Christ of the Western Diocese. Thanks for your partnership in the Gospel and the for the love of God you certainly share. Your Brother in Christ s Eternal Love, Bishop James A. Justman Let all that you do be done in love. 1 Corinthians 16:14 Trip to Glacier July 26 August 3 On July 26 over thirty youth and adults from Grace Lutheran will leave for adventures in Glacier National Park. 7 From the Stewardship Committee Called to Imitate God s Generosity God s nature is to give, and we are created in God s image. Giving reflects the heart of God. Unfortunately, our flesh, the world, and Satan prevent us from imitating God s generous nature. In our sinful state, we are selfish, self-centered people who are inclined to keep our money for ourselves rather than to give it. Through the working of the Holy Spirit, God fills our hearts with a spirit of generosity. We stop seeing the money we have as just for our needs and entertainment. By grace, we understand that the money God entrusts to us has the potential to be used to support mission starts and missionaries so they can share the life-saving Gospel in this land and overseas. Our money has the potential to help those who are hungry and homeless. It has the potential to support our Christian schools and agencies. It supports the mission and ministry of our church. God uses and multiplies the money we give in many wonderful ways. Through God-given faith and new attitudes, we see that our generosity is made possible by and rooted in His generosity. We are empowered to give because of God s generosity to us. Knowing that He doesn t limit His gifts to us and experiencing His generosity at work in our lives, we respond to His appeal to give generously. God s people live with an abundant perspective trusting in His provisions. In Scripture, we see over and over again how God s people demonstrated their trust in His abundance. Abel, Noah, Abraham, Jacob, David, the Poor Widow, Zacchaeus, and Barnabas demonstrated their faith and trust. In 2 Corinthians chapters 8 and 9, the Apostle Paul instructs the Corinthians to take up a collection for the Christian Jews suffering from famine in Jerusalem. Paul urges them to give generously because their generosity is rooted in God s ability to provide everything they need to be generous on all occasions. And God is able to make all grace abound to you, so that having all sufficiency in all things at all times, you may abound in every good work (2 Corinthians 9:8). As our bounteous God richly bestowed on the Corinthians the capacity for generosity, He can do the same for us. In Jesus it is always more and never less. Even when things are tough, we will be given the opportunity to share because God s sufficiency will provide. When we give generously from loving and cheerful hearts, we bring joy to our Heavenly Father because we display His image and likeness. Filled with God s sufficiency, rather than our own, we become generous givers. JULY SPECIAL OFFERING TAIV The Special Offering during the month of July will go to support Tomahawk Area Interfaith Volunteers, Inc. TAIV is a nonprofit, completely volunteer organization unique to our community and has worked with Grace Lutheran and the other Tomahawk area churches since its beginning in TAIV is independent and works with the Tomahawk churches and community to reach the homebound and disabled. TAIV tries to match those in need with volunteers from their own church. TAIV s mission is to help our elderly and disabled stay in their homes as long as possible. The volunteers offer free nonmedical services such as helping with household chores, shopping, transportation, yard work and visitation. A friendly home visit can make a world of difference in the life of someone who is homebound. Tomahawk has limited resources regarding social services, public transportation and housing for the disabled and elderly, and family members are often absent. TAIV helps fill the gap. Spread the word about what TAIV has to offer. TAIV offers both short and long term support. TAIV has office hours 10:00 am to 12:00 noon, Monday and Friday at Grace House, 108 Somo Ave., and can be reached at or taivcaregivers@hotmail.com Financial support and volunteers are always needed. St Mary s has supported TAIV with $ this year. Can Grace match this? Your Special Offering is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your continuous support. 8 GRACE LUTHERAN CHURCH COUNCIL Thursday, June 13, 2013 MEMBERS PRESENT: Heather Engel, Autumn Frederick, Brian Storm, Nathon Tobias, Karen Olson, Forrest Gibeault, Mindy Gabrich, Judy Juedes, John Kromm, Margie Welke. ALSO PRESENT: Pastors Mark Ziemer and Karla Kirkeby; Jane Brokaw to speak to the Council about landscaping care problems and future parking project. The meeting was called to order at 6:00 p.m. by President Heather Engel. Devotions by Margie Welke: Margie gave statistics about homelessness and poverty in this country and around the world. Grace recently had a 24 Hours of Homelessness Event and participating students had also been given this information, where it had quite an impact as they experienced what it might be like to not have enough food or sufficient shelter. We are a land of plenty and God asks us to share what we have with others in need. Margie then led us in a prayer of thanks for all that God has given us. Where have we seen God at work? At the Community Awards Dinner where four Grace members were given awards for community service. The response to our Outdoor Sunday Morning Service at Schaefer s Wharf. In the interview process for a Youth Facilitator and the changing results. In the 24 Hours of Homelessness Event. In the rain received this spring. With the calming of Autumn s dog recently. Motion to accept minutes of the May Council Meeting, Treasurer s Report and Committee Reports by Mindy Gabrich/Autumn Frederick. (Note: Committee Reports and Pastors Reports are kept in a notebook located in the Gathering Area, if you would like additional information on what s going on at Grace.) Jane Brokaw, Landscape Architect, and member of Grace, spoke briefly about the need for more volunteers to take care of weeding and watering around Grace to help keep our grounds neat and beautiful. It requires about two hours per person, per week, and it is at the convenience of the workers. Do you have time to give? She also stated she feels we need to decide our priorities for developing a parking area along the alley behind Grace House. The grass is gone and we have weeds and mud in wet periods of the year. She suggests putting in a good base of gravel and asphalt as a permanent solution but we need to figure out how to pay for the project, if that is our choice. Perhaps an appeal to the congregation? Cost is about $3.00/$4.00 per sq. foot. Brian Storm will talk to Buildings & Grounds Committee for suggestions on this. Jane Brokaw and Julie Dentler are seeking additional help with the December Cookie Walk. Are you interested? Mary Lou & Larry Voermans have stepped down as organizers of the Christmas With Friends Dinner. Can you help with this project? Motion by Mindy Gabrich/John Kromm to approve two new financial secretaries, Sue Mielke and Georgie Crass. Our thanks, too, to Sherry Thompson for her service to Grace. Youth Facilitator/Assistant Position Update: Because we have been blessed with four well-qualified candidates for this position --Wendy Black, Margie Welke, Mindy Gabrich, and Patti Gaedtke --and this is such an important decision for the future of Grace, it was determined that we need to explore and develop a program which will cover the period from birth through early 30 s of life. It was also determined that this is too much of a challenge for just one person. It was, therefore, decided to hire Wendy Black as Youth Ministry Facilitator (coordinator), Patti Gaedtke as Director of Children s Ministries (birth to 7 th grade), Mindy Gabrich as Director of Confirmation and Technology, and Margie Welke as Director of Young Adult Ministries. This will be a Team Effort beginning July 1, Budgeted is $6, for the remainder of 2013, $3, for Wendy Black and $1, each for Margie Welke, Mindy Gabrich and Patti Gaedtke. The proposed program will be evaluated in February, Motion by Karen Olson/Judy Juedes. (Margie Welke and Mindy Gabrich abstained from voting) Sarah Mann has expressed concern that the Treasurer s position is too much for her to handle and has expressed 8 (Continued on page 9)

9 (Continued from page 8) Council Minutes the desire to have another person or outside firm take over some of the Treasurer s responsibilities. Heather Engel will speak with Pam Kopp about the duties and how this should be handled. Motion by Karen Olson/John Kromm to approve a monetary gift and set of candle sticks from Grace Lutheran Church, Tomahawk, to Lekubu Lutheran Parish, South African Diocese. Motion to Adjourn by Margie Welke/Autumn Frederick. The meeting ended with the Lord s Prayer. Respectfully, Karen Olson, Secretary Twenty-four Hours of Homelessness Event This event began Wednesday, June 12, at 9:00 am and concluded Thursday, June 13, at 9:00 am. The youth attending were Abby Norman, Josh Wick, Jackie Wick, and Matthew Strebig. The twenty-four hours began with a prayer. After that, we constructed houses out of cardboard boxes, and talked about what homelessness meant. We then went shopping for groceries for the meal we were taking to Frederick Place in Rhinelander; this is the Northern Alliance for Temporary Housing (NATH). Each youth was given $10 to try to purchase as much as we could for the Food Pantry. We ended up with three bags of food for the Pantry. The youth were asked for a ten dollar donation or to get pledges. We used the money from this for Frederick Place. After the shopping, we went back to church and made lasagna, salad, and cake for the meal that we would be taking. This was a new experience for some who had never cooked. During this time it started to rain and the houses built out of cardboard fell apart (under the eaves of the church) another lesson learned. We took the meal we had prepared to Frederick Place in Rhinelander. We had to set up. Then the residents came and ate and we joined them. We talked to them and heard their stories of how they came to be in their present situation. The director also explained how the house works and then we cleaned up and headed back to Grace. When we arrived back at church, we set up our houses once again and we talked more about the idea of what homelessness is. Our ideas had changed. We also did an activity so we had more of a visual of the amount of homelessness in the world and how we could change this. The rest of the night we had a campfire, talked more about the day, and played some night games. This was a really good bonding time. We ended the night with God Moments and prayer. We were in our boxes (cardboard houses) by 11:00 pm. In the morning we cleaned up the cardboard and ended by making pancakes and sharing breakfast together. We also discussed future ideas for the summer. Some of the ideas were: a scavenger hunt food drive in August, and a camping out on a Friday night in mid-august. We raised $100 with pledges and donations. The dinner for Frederick Place came to $ The remainder of the monies raised will go to the Salvation Army Backpack program. See pictures on back page! 9
