Let us be of help to your family. The Importance of the Teacher by Debbie Bumbalough Our congregation had decided to dedicate our Wednesday evening studies to the text for Bible Bowl. Because a few young mothers wanted their 6 and 7 year olds to participate, I decided to take on that class, but one evening, I wound up with only one young student. In walked Carol all smiles and eager to begin. Since I have always been a strong proponent of teaching one-on-one, we continued with our study of 1 Thessalonians. After I had gone over part of the story of the first chapter, Carol responded well to all the questions I asked of her. I had prepared flash cards with words from the text that might have difficult pronunciation. She enunciated Thessalonians and Thessalonica when we went to the map, even Macedonia. I had cut up memory verses of important texts that I wanted to emphasize. Carol flew through these verses putting them in order, and then reading out loud. Not until I asked her to say them from memory did she falter. Whew, we had something to work on for homework! What joys there are in seeing learning take place in a child. But even without it, this kind of learning encourages all of us to become better teachers and to not waste a minute of teaching time. Dear Lord, help us to work hard every day to mold young lives; help us to prepare ourselves to be the right kind of teachers for these precious students. In 1983, Gospel Advocate magazine printed the following article: The Importance of the Teacher. I hope it will encourage you as you help your students prepare for the future. The Importance of the Teacher by David L. Baker Reprinted from Gospel Advocate, March 17, 1983 Several years ago, this ad appeared in a church bulletin: WANTED: Teacher Must have the wisdom of Solomon, the patience of Job, and the courage of David. Must also have Jonah s ability to bob up smiling, the faith of the early Christians on lion s day at the Coliseum, and the confidence of Noah to say that the whole trip was worth the trouble. In one sense, this shows the joy of teaching. In another, it shows the great responsibility borne by the teacher. Those who teach have had the delight of seeing the straightforward way children explain the unexplainable. How does God create people? He draws us first, and then he cuts us out. A fifth grader, in reply to what one must do before receiving forgiveness of sins: Sin. But these moments of humor fade when one experiences the joy of seeing one they taught obey the gospel. Amid the joy, there is a dark aspect. In 1957, Time ran a series on the Bible class titled, The Most Wasted Hour of the Week. During the 60s, the churches of America began to struggle toward a meaningful Bible class by stressing the application of biblical truths. In the 70s we began to see the fruit of this effort with increases in enrollment and church growth. What will be the epitaph of the 80s? In order to answer this positively, we will need to consider the importance of the teacher. The best way to understand the teacher s importance is in answering the who, what and why of teaching. Who do we teach? The age group to be taught best determines the method to be used most effectively. Special care is given to younger learners who need specific guidance. All ages, however, have three things in common. First, they are individuals. The teacher will always seek the individual level, for only here will learning occur. 3 Summer this principle when He taught the rich young ruler and Peter (Matthew 19:16-30). Second, teachers are always searching for something. Learning requires a teacher plus a learner. Solomon admonished his son not to forget his teachings and encouraged him to let his heart keep the commandments (Proverbs 2:1-5). Third, and most importantly, teachers have a soul! When teachers realize the preciousness of the soul, no effort will be wasted in preparation, prayer, and concern for the souls in their care. For this reason teachers will receive a heavier judgment (James 3:1). What do we teach? Paul gives warning that some teach wrongly for they do so in accordance to their own desires (2 Timothy 4:3ff nasb). Likewise, others were not to teach for they lacked the understanding to do so (1 Timothy 1:1-7). What is to be taught was given at awful cost the gospel. For this reason Paul soundly affirms that the teacher should not be ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes (Romans 1:16) Since what we teach was designed to save whom we teach (1 Timothy 4:16), we need to be intimately familiar with the source of our teaching (2 Timothy 2:15). Finally, the importance of the teacher can be seen in why we teach. Teachers are a very special group of people. Indeed, God ranked them third (1 Corinthians 12:28), and James counseled, Let not many of you be teachers (3:1). This group, however, does not teach because they are special! Are you seeking great things for yourself? Do not seek them (Jeremiah 45:5). Teachers do not subject themselves to heavier judgment out of personal glory, but for the glory of God and the opportunity to save souls (1 Corinthians 10:31, 33). They teach for they must teach out of their love for souls. Teachers are vital in the church s evangelism program! Their tool is the Bible class, and it should be used effectively to achieve certain goals. The Question That Remains What will the epitaph of the Bible teacher be in 2015? 2016? What kind of difference will we make in the lives of children all over the world? Have you experienced the heartfelt joy of teaching?
