Ad Clerum St Michael and All Angels Number 4/14 The Continuing Anglican Church of Zambia (CACZ) We congratulate Bishop-Elect Andrew Mukuyamba On 12, 13 and 14 July, a series of services and meetings took place in Lusaka, Zambia, that will determine the future, not only of the Continuing Anglican Church of Zambia but also the growth and development of the work of the Traditional Anglican Communion throughout Southern Africa. The work of the Traditional Anglican Communion in Southern Africa has been growing steadily over the past decade. New parishes have been planted in Botswana and Mozambique, and together with the already established churches in South Africa (Anglican Church in Southern Africa Traditional Anglican Communion aka Traditional Rite) and Church of Umzi Wase Tiyopiya, Traditional Rite, and the considerable work being done in Zimbabwe and Zambia, it has 1

become obvious that there was a need for a more systematic development plan for both the co-ordination of work and of leadership within our enormous area. This would enable the necessary sacramental life of the church to be spread into all our parishes. In 2013, a most important meeting was held in Johannesburg that planned the future developments of the Traditional Anglican Communion in Southern Africa. What emerged was the need for a Southern African Province, in which ideas and resources could be shared, and ministries and institutions developed in a spirit of mutual support and brotherhood. This meeting was fully supported by the TAC College of Bishops and the International Anglican Fellowship. Present were representatives from South Africa, Zimbabwe and Zambia, as well as the Southern African Diocesan Standing Committee and the Department of Theological Education. Senior TAC members from Zambia, Zimbabwe and South Africa meeting in Johannesburg, 2013 to discuss the way forward for Southern Africa Whereas some Continuing Anglican churches have sought to actively proselytize, and draw membership from renegade or disenchanted groupings, often with their own bishops in tow, the TAC in Southern Africa has preferred a steady organic growth, where our own institutions are strengthened and developed and a long term team ministry is encouraged to emerge. Ministry that is controlled and developed, and where theological education is ensured and monitored has been preferred to the kitskonstabel or instant clergyman approach we have too often seen in the emerging fringe Anglican churches. Although not as spectacular as the so-called growth of some others, we were all fully in agreement that developing a strong identity as the TAC in Africa, and a loyalty to the church and TAC Communion amongst our clergy and people was by far the better way to go to ensure a future for many generations to come. We find no honour in those whose definition of Church Growth is that of trying to erode the membership of other existing churches, whoever they may be. The better way is that of the conversion of the lost and the bringing of men and women to salvation. That is Prime Evangelism, and that is our mission. 2

It must be stated here that great care has been taken in Southern Africa not to multiply Bishops, as has been the case in some of our neighbouring churches. The number of Bishops does not denote church success, and this vital leadership role, with its many accompanying onerous spiritual responsibilities, should be prayerfully and carefully considered by the church before being entered into. The Very Rev Andrew Mukuyamba, Hon Paul du Plessis, Bishop Michael and The Very Rev Wellington Murinda at the meeting in Lusaka, Zambia The leadership of the church in Zambia meet to make decisions concerning their future. This whole concept and agreement was taken to its next logical step when a meeting was held in July 2014 in Lusaka, Zambia. Present were Bishop Michael Gill, in his capacity as Episcopal Visitor to Zambia and Secretary to the TAC College of Bishops (and with the full knowledge and support of the TAC College of Bishops), The Honourable Paul du Plessis in his capacity as Chancellor to Southern Africa and member of the Advisory Committee of the TAC College of Bishops, The Very Rev Wellington Murinda (Vicar General for Southern Africa and Zimbabwe), The Very Rev Andrew 3

Mukuyamba (Vicar General for Zambia), together with his assembled Standing Committee and whole church leadership, both laity and clergy. The meeting addressed two major points: 1. The need for and election of a Bishop for Zambia. 2. The development of closer links and a far closer working relationship with their Southern African TAC partners. At the meeting, the following pivotal decisions were taken: 1. There was a clear and plausible case for a Bishop for Zambia. The need for Episcopal ministry was obvious, and the growth of the church warranted such a ministry. The Very Reverend Andrew Mukuyamba (Vicar General of Zambia) was proposed and seconded to be the first Bishop of the Continuing Anglican Church of Zambia. There were no other nominations, and The Very Rev Andrew Mukyamba was unanimously elected to thunderous applause. 2. Following much discussion around the future growth of the church, the Rev Fr Banda proposed that the Continuing Anglican Church of Zambia formally enter into a close working relationship with the Anglican Church in Southern Africa (Traditional Anglican Communion, aka Traditional Rite), to develop a Southern African Province of the Traditional Anglican Communion, in which autonomous churches could retain their full identity, but function as a unity in a Southern African TAC. This proposal was enthusiastically received and unanimously supported. As a result of these two decisions, the following will now take place: 1. The Very Rev Andrew Mukuyamba becomes the Bishop-Elect of the Continuing Anglican Church of Zambia, with all the administrative authority that comes with that Office. Bishop Michael Gill continues as Episcopal Visitor to Zambia until the nomination of Fr Andrew has been ratified by the TAC College of Bishops, and, following such approval, he is Consecrated as a Bishop in the Church of God within the Traditional Anglican Communion. 2. The Continuing Anglican Church of Zambia and the Anglican Church in Southern Africa (Traditional Anglican Communion aka Traditional Rite) will work with some urgency at the highest level to develop a far closer working relationship and begin the formation of a Southern African Province of the Traditional Anglican Communion to enable mutual support in the development of their respective churches for the spread of the Gospel of Our Lord Jesus Christ to all the peoples of Southern Africa. This will result in co-operation in terms of theological education and training of clergy, the spread of resources that are available, and a well-co-ordinated approach to the development of parishes and other institutions into the future, including schools and clinics. 4

Both of these decisions taken are the result of careful long-term planning, and the further development of our strategic relationship will ensure the future of the TAC in Africa, and begin a steady spread of the Gospel into other neighbouring African countries. It is a very good thing to see sound planning come to fruition, and the faithful of the TAC in Southern Africa can be content that responsible leadership and planning has brought this progress to pass. Other events of the visit to Zambia At the airport We were humbled to be met by dozens of church members at the airport, all in full church regalia. The obvious commitment and love of the people of the Continuing Anglican Church of Zambia were there for all to see. Confirmation: An enormous Confirmation service took place on Saturday, with some 220 candidates receiving the Sacrament of the Holy Ghost and their First Holy Communion. The service took five hours and the choirs were quite amazing, singing with beauty and enthusiasm throughout that long service! During the sermon, Bishop Michael asked one young man what he wished to do with his life in the future. He replied, without hesitation, that he wished to become a man of deep faith and Christian witness! What an answer! The future is bright for the church in Zambia with such young people coming through the ranks! The clergy of the Diocese had done their preparation well, and the service, despite being long, was filled with joy, and the presence of the Holy Spirit was evident throughout. 5

Ad Clerum 4/14 The wonderful group of believers Confirmed in Lusaka As the night fell, the faithful CACZ people readied themselves for the follow day s Ordination and prepared some supper for themselves and fellow worshippers. The Ordination: Three Deacons were Ordained to the Priesthood in a lovely ceremony. The church was filled to capacity and the reception of the newly-ordained men was a joy to behold, as their families and people welcomed them to their new ministry. The three Deacons prepare themselves for the service. 7

The Deacons are presented to the Bishop The Rev Fr Maxwell Mooya, The Rev Fr Terry Kabwe and The Rev Fr Tyson Tembo have served for three years as Deacons, and they were prepared for Ordination by Fr Andrew Mukuyamba and his senior clergy. At the end of the service, all the current serving clergy received new Licences from Bishop Michael; their previous Licences having been issued by former Archbishop John Hepworth several years ago. 8

Ad Clerum 4/14 Nothing that is of high quality comes quickly, and this has been the case with the Continuing Anglican Church of Zambia (CACZ). Begun by Fr Pierre Dil and his wife Wenda, they struggled for many years until establishing the Makeni Centre in Lusaka and attracting substantial foreign funding. They had left the large Cathedral in Lusaka to keep true to the Catholic Faith, and for this we salute them and their courage. They typify the determination and fortitude of the Continuing Anglican Movement, and especially that of the Traditional Anglican Communion in Africa. Fr Pierre Dil built up the church, and clergy were trained and ordained to assist his vision and establish the mission. When he died in 2005, his legacy was a vibrant and flourishing Traditional Anglican community in Zambia. Fr Pierre Dil is buried in the Makeni Centre, Lusaka. Mrs Wenda Dil continues to support the work of the church and lives at the Makeni Centre. Fr Dil s funeral was attended by President Kenneth Kaunda who was deeply appreciative of his care for the people of Zambia The work of the Makeni Centre is most exciting. There is a school (both Primary and Secondary) a clinic, a piggery and butchery with a shop for the produce, a secretarial college and an orphanage for almost 50 children. The church at Makeni is a functional parish and there is place for retreat and group visits. The Diocesan Office functions out of the Makeni Centre. 10

A great deal of work went into the success of this visit. The Zambian Ordinands received a full set of vestments, albs, amices, girdles, bibles and communion linen, whilst all the other CACZ clergy received fresh amices and altar communion linens for their parishes. This took up almost all luggage space travelling up! Our thanks go to the International Anglican Fellowship for assisting with the funding of this visit and to the Anglican Church of Southern Africa (Traditional Anglican Communion aka Traditional Rite) for bearing the remainder of the costs. A special word of thanks goes to Dalene Gill for the work done by her Altar Project and for the fine vestments and linens supplied throughout Southern Africa. Dalene hard at work making stoles and linens for Zambia. Fr Andrew, Bishop Michael and Mrs Wenda Dil at Makeni Centre Some of the items taken to the services in Lusaka. On the left is an idea of what each of the Priests were given on their Ordination. 11

A spirit of co-operation and dedication as the evening sun pours into the church in Lusaka. May the Light of Christ illuminate our path as we go forward together in hope and faith and love. May Our Lord bless and protect Bishop-Elect Andrew Mukuyamba and the people of Zambia God bless and keep you. Thank you for your prayers and support of the TAC in Southern Africa. We truly are A church on the move and that is a team effort. In Christ Bishop Michael Gill Southern Africa 12
