6 Asian EoC The future of the world very much depends on which kind of economy will develop in Asia Therefore, the future of EoC in Asia is a very crucial issue It is not by chance that we are celebrating the 25 anniversary of EoC here in Asia 6

7 25 years of EoC After 25 years, how do we understand EoC? It is an inclusive and evolving process more than a product it is not just a business community: it is first and foremost a community of people: the richness of EoC is its people it is made up of people who are not fully happy with our capitalism it is an economy for all: for believers and not, for young and old people, for rich and poorer has some specific traits. Which ones? 7

8 Why in Asia, and why in the Philippines? For many reasons: 1. The friendships and communion with friends here. 2. Because we, as international EoC, have started to reflect systematically on poverty in 2005, with Leo Andringa. 8

Here we find some aspects of the landscape that Chiara saw in 1991 in Sao Paolo But also: Wealth, young people, entrepreneurship Because here market and capitalism are growing strongly don t forget Chiara s trip to the US in 1990: to break the walls of consumerism 4. Then here is very clear and evident the link between wealth creation and poverty: EoC is alive as long as it keeps together poverty and wealth 9

12 The new culture of poverty In today life the encounters with poor people are more and more difficult because the poor are regarded not just as unlucky, but also as guilty persons. This was an essential element of the archaic religions; because of the principle of subsidiarity 12

13 Subsidiarity In order to really help a person in a condition of deprivation and with a lack of capabilities, we need to apply the principle of subsdiarity : the first competence for a better life is the one of the poor person: poverty has its own competence discovery of these competences: trust, proximity, respect, esteem for the already of the poor, not only for the not yet in this way the competences can emerge; this is always an individual and communitarian process without this first step, help coming from outside (State, firms, philanthropy) highly risks to fail subsidiarity then means that the external help is the second step: essential but second. The fist step is a research of the competences of the person in poverty. 13

15 Towards the 50 anniversary What about the next 25 years? Which are the challenges to face today in order to reach the golden weding? Just a proposal and a personal reflection 15

17 17 The intelligence of human beings is not the only intelligence of the planet. Next to ours there is also that of the different animals, insects, and even that of the different plants. 26/05/2016

18 18 We can all experience the richness of the life of plants, but we have to walk into a forest or a park without haste, without headphones, without running, focused on our calories only. 26/05/2016

19 Trees and the world of plants have a dominant fundamental characteristic: they are anchored to the soil, they have roots.

20 20 We animals have had a big evolutionary advantage on the plants because of the development of our organs, in a strong functional division. 26/05/2016

21 21 Plants had to learn to survive even if at the cost of losing 50 or 80% of their body, managing not to die even when they are eaten and reduced to almost nothing. To succeed in this operation, which appears to us as a real miracle, plants perform their vital functions with their entire body 26/05/2016

22 There are many things that the vulnerability and resilience of plants can tell us

23 The companies of the past centuries have been structured on the animal model: a strong functional division of labour and a hierarchical order.

24 24 Enterprises have been and are the big winners of the evolutionary history of our fast running time. At some point, however, at the turn of the millennia, the environment of the human world went through a dramatic change with the arrival of the Internet and networks which are actually very similar to plants. 26/05/2016

25 The vulnerable resistance of plants can tell us many more things. Let s just think of ideal driven spiritual communities, or our inner life.

26 26 Finally, even the good development of the inner spiritual life can be seen as a progressive transformation of the soul, which becomes more and more like a tree. 26/05/2016

27 27 To get out alive from moments of great crisis, whether moral or physical, it can be enough to have a little bit of living tissue saved and healthy, that did not get devoured by predators and rise again. 26/05/2016
