Introduction On June 14, 2015, Gayton Baptist Church s Senior Pastor, Rev. Phillip Faig, announced the acceptance of a call to Downtown Baptist Church in Alexandria, Virginia as Senior Pastor. Following this announcement, the church s Servant Leadership Council and deacons began formulating the next steps for our church during a season of transition. The church began to pray for the person God would lead to Gayton to become our next Senior Pastor. In July, a team of seven church members formed the Transition Team to set the stage for the Pastor Search Team. The main duties of the Transition Team were to pray for God s guidance, recommend a candidate for interim preacher, gather input from the congregation, develop a formal profile of the church and develop a formal profile for the Senior Pastor. Since the formation of the team, we have spent many hours praying for the Lord s guidance and direction, seeking counsel from church leaders, consultants, and other churches in transition. We were advised by many to look introspectively during this time of transition into the life of our church. In creating the profile, our team utilized help, advice, and feedback from the staff of the Baptist General Association of Virginia and our congregation. The final step in creating the profile was to analyze information gathered from numerous Listening Sessions facilitated by Transition Team members. Church members and regular attenders were asked to participate in small group discussions focused on the past, the present, and the future. As a result of our work, the Transition Team is pleased to present the following document as the Church Profile. Throughout this profile, our team has tried to communicate our journey as we reflected on our past, examined our present needs and looked to serving our community in the future. We appreciate your prayers as we continue to seek the Lord s guidance in leading us to His chosen servant. We pray God s continued blessing on the church and give thanks to our staff, our interim preacher, Dr. Travis Collins, and the congregation for their contributions to this document. 4

History In 1987, the Missions Committee of the Richmond Baptist Association realized the need for a new Baptist church in Richmond s growing Far West End, known as Short Pump. The association purchased property in 1988 to donate to a new church plant. Derbyshire Baptist Church agreed to serve as the sponsoring church and called Rev. Darrell Boggs to serve as the founding pastor. Rev. Boggs and his wife Babette, were serving at Second Baptist Church at the time and answered the call. They began researching, planning, organizing and recruiting in the fall of In January 1989, a group of volunteers organized to pray, study and plan the foundation of Gayton. In February, Derbyshire installed telephone banks in the library and volunteers made phone calls over a two-week period. The results from more than 5,000 phone calls were compiled and letters of invitation sent to those expressing interest. Gayton held its first service at Gayton Elementary School on April 9, 1989, with 260 in attendance. From the early days, Gayton THIS FAR WEST END COMMUNITY FOUND ITS NAME FROM A SHORT-HANDLED WATER PUMP FROM THE HORSE AND BUGGY DAYS provided Sunday School and fellowship events, and evening activities for children and youth. By February 1990, the church membership reached 100. In response to the growth, the church elected and ordained its first deacons. In 1992, after significant prayer and discussion, the church elected the first female deacon. With the land available on which to build, Gayton quickly began plans to open a church facility on North Gayton Road, near what was the edge of development in Short Pump. Members broke ground in the spring of 1992 and did much of the work on the facility themselves in an effort to stretch funds. 6

Work was completed and the first service was held in the facility on February 7, The second phase of building was completed in 1997, adding classroom space and a second floor nursery. From the start, Gayton was recognized as a mission-minded congregation that participated in and gave generously to mission causes. In the spirit of those who planted Gayton to reach an underserved community, the church made its facility available to several area churches as they began, including St. Michael s Catholic Church and Grace Chinese Baptist Church. Community partnership was also a part of Gayton s vision from the start. In addition to being used by other churches, the church building was, and continues to be, used by Community Bible Study, Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and neighborhood and community associations. Through the investment of countless volunteers and three new part-time staff members, Gayton s ministries grew in size and scope from the first annual youth mission trip in 1994 to a Saturday morning Bible Study at Gayton Terrace, a local retirement community. Both are bedrock ministries that continues today. In January 2002, Gayton launched AGAPE Preschool, a co-operative preschool with a Christ-centered curriculum. AGAPE is designed to partner with parents in bringing about children s social, emotional, physical and spiritual development. AGAPE quickly grew into an entry point for many families to engage with the church and as an outreach ministry to the growing South Asian population in Short Pump. THE GAYTON TERRACE SATURDAY MORNING BIBLE STUDY CONTINUES TODAY Gayton s founding pastor, Rev. Boggs, announced his resignation in Dr. Charles Bugg served as intentional interim while a search committee began the process of finding a pastor to lead Gayton s next phase of growth. The church called Rev. Philip Faig, who moved his family from their church planting efforts 7

in Minnesota back to Virginia. Rev. Faig assumed the role of senior pastor on Easter Sunday As a young but growing congregation, Gayton was in need of restructuring to support future growth. The congregation approved a rewritten constitution that included a provision for a Servant Leadership Council (SLC) to come alongside the deacons in providing lay leadership for the church. The SLC took over the visioning and administrative leadership functions, freeing the deacons to focus on congregational care. Restructuring also called for the creation of five councils - Worship, Discipleship, Missions, Membership and Ministry - as well as elected boards and task groups. Within a year of Rev. Faig s start at Gayton, phase three of the building was completed, adding a much needed education wing with classrooms on two levels. The additional space was soon filled with classes on Sundays and Wednesdays and used by AGAPE and community partners like Christian Youth Theater (now Character Works) throughout the week. Growth surged, and the congregation moved to two worship services each Sunday morning, with each geared to a different style of worship. A third service was added at 8:30 on Sunday mornings, but did not have the attendance to sustain after the first year. Gayton now offers two worship services with MUSICIANS SHARE THEIR TALENTS THROUGH JAZZ NATIVITY concurrent opportunities for life groups and learning communities for all ages. Youth gather on Sunday nights, and Wednesday night dinners continue to provide an opportunity to connect midweek before engaging in additional opportunities for life groups and learning communities. Gayton has been home to many gifted musicians since the beginning. In December 2009, Gayton s exceptional musicians and event coordinators prepared to host an evening of coffee house-style jazz to raise money for 8

global missions. Jazz Nativity was born, and has since grown to five sold-out shows per year and is a signature Christmas event in Richmond. In 2011, Jazz Nativity joined forces with another signature Gayton event, the Feed My Starving Children mobile pack. Money raised from ticket sales and partner vendors at the event is used to purchase meals for hungry children. On Super Bowl weekend, hundreds of individuals from Gayton and the community gather to pack more than 100,000 meals to be sent around the world. Jazz Nativity attendees are invited to come back and participate in the event, and since 2011, volunteers have packed more than 500,000 meals. In 2011, the SPACE afterschool program became another link to the community, providing the best space between school and home for children from four area elementary schools. In 2015, QUEST Camp became the third piece of the ministry to area kids and their families. In the midst of an economic recession, Gayton s leaders made a bold proposal to step out in faith and take advantage of low construction costs to build the long dreamed of Outreach Center. Following church approval of the plan, the My Life fundraising campaign began with pledges coming in at nearly $2 million of the $5.5 million anticipated cost. The Outreach Center s grand opening took place in September 2014, doubling the square footage of the facility with the addition of a gym, cafe, children s play place, great room and commercial kitchen. MEMBERS OF ALL AGES HELP CUT THE RIBBON TO OPEN THE OUTREACH CENTER Once again, the space became vital to Gayton s own ministries as well as its community partners. In Fall 2014, Gayton launched a partnership with the John Rolfe branch of the YMCA, providing gym and other facilities for the Y to hold exercise classes, youth recreation leagues and more. 9

Over the years, Gayton s staff has grown to include six full-time and three parttime ministers, six support staff and the staff of the preschool, afterschool and summer camp programs. Gayton has ordained several individuals to ministry over the years, including the first woman in March Rev. Faig announced his resignation in THE PLAY PLACE HAS BECOME A KID FAVORITE IN THE NEW BUILDING June 2015 to return to his early ministry roots and pastor a church in the heart of Alexandria, Virginia. Gayton s bold mission is to see every life changed by Jesus. Those who originally sensed a need for a church on the edge of the Far West End proved far-sighted. Gayton is no longer on the edge of development, but at the center of the bustling Short Pump community. The church reaches individuals and families from three counties that converge near the facility and serves a community of 46,000 households within a 5-mile radius. 10

Denominational Affiliations, Purpose, Vision & Values Gayton is a Baptist congregation that deeply values traditional Baptist beliefs like baptism by immersion and the autonomy of the local church. Our theological beliefs are outlined in the 1963 Baptist Faith and Message and include two ordinances we regularly observe: Baptism and the Lord s Supper. In addition, we trust the Bible as God s authority, believe in the priesthood of all believers, and support men and women in all areas of leadership. We treasure the unity we share as a faith community. From leadership development to international partnerships, Gayton has maintained relationships with the Baptist General Association of Virginia. Contributions also support the Southern Baptist Convention and the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship. Leaders and laity engage in practices that promote consensus building. These practices make Gayton a warm, welcoming and loving body of believers. These characteristics have drawn a wide range of believers to Gayton. In fact, from its inception, Gayton has been comprised of believers who started their faith journey in other denominations, those at the beginning stages of discipleship and those who have been on their faith journey for years. While there are diverse backgrounds and theological viewpoints, what binds us together is Christ and our willingness to be on mission for Him. Being Christ s hands and feet in the community, nation and world is part of Gayton's DNA. This focus on missions and traditional Baptist beliefs are the foundation of our vision. With God s grace we endeavor to pursue our vision of Every Life Changed by Jesus. Our strategy is to invite people into the fellowship of God s family, help each person grow to maturity in Christ and equip them to be the presence of Christ in our community and world. To this vision and strategy we commit by the grace of God. 11

Our values are principles we live by and hold deeply to enable us to fulfill our purpose. We value being: God-Centered We were created to please God. We want to bring honor and praise to God and bear witness to His Son, Jesus Christ. This means that God is first in everything from our public worship to our commitments as individuals to honor God in all that we do and say. Bible-Based The teaching of God s word permeates the life of Gayton. The Bible is God s Word and must be applied in what we believe and how we behave toward God and others. Spiritual Growth Enthusiasts We are a church that captures your heart, challenges your thinking and celebrates your gifts like Jesus did with his disciples. We commit to engaging each person and helping them take next steps on their spiritual journey. Outreach-Oriented We share the love of Christ with our community and our world. In faith we believe God wants to bless us so we can be a blessing to others. We commit to serving others sacrificially. We are intentional and joyful about empowering and equipping Christ-followers for ministry. 12

Church Life Gayton has great opportunities for members, regular attenders and guests to grow in their knowledge of God and to support and hold one another accountable for living a Christ-like life. Sunday Mornings Sunday morning services include a contemporary service at 9:30 AM and a blended service at 11:00 AM. The half hour between services provides an opportunity for people to gather for a cup of coffee and conversation in the Pump House Café. Opportunities are available at both 9:30 AM and 11 AM for all ages to gather and learn as individuals or couples. Learning communities and LifeGROUPS are Bible-based and use a variety of media, books and curricula as a basis for discussion. Nursery care is provided for our youngest during both service times. Kids Ministry Planting seeds of faith, tending young hearts, and growing relationships with Jesus. Gayton Kids is for children from birth through 5th grade and their families. Kids are taught that God loves them, gave His Son for them, and desires for them to believe in and follow Him. Kids Ministry offers opportunities for kids to learn and grow on Sunday mornings, Wednesday evenings and during special events that happen throughout the year. 23

Highlights of the Kids Ministry year include Vacation Bible School, February MADness, Groovie Night, Preschool Play Days and Kids Camp. Youth Ministry Gayton Youth exists to boldly pursue all youth, wherever they are in their faith journey, to cultivate disciples, and to equip youth to impact the world through Christ. Gayton Youth serves students in grades 6 through 12 and their families. Youth gather in the Outreach Center gym each Sunday night for a meal, games, large group worship and small groups. Learning communities are available on Sunday mornings, and numerous special events for youth and parents, from mission trips and retreats to social media seminars, occur throughout the year. Midweek Midweek dinner attracts a variety of church members and guests and provides a time of fellowship as a community. At a minimal cost, families or individuals can enjoy a meal prepared on site by our chef. All ages gather to eat and socialize before heading to kids, youth or adult programs or lifegroups. MOPS, a growing outreach to mothers of preschoolers, also meets on Wednesday evenings. THE MOPS GROUP PREPARES MEALS FOR FAMILIES WITH NEW BABIES OR WHO ARE EXPERIENCING ILLNESS 24

Adult LifeGROUPs Adult LifeGROUPs are made up of 6-12 individuals who meet to help each other live out their faith as they journey through life together. Groups are designed for individuals or couples. Adult LifeGROUPs meet whenever and wherever the group decides in homes, at church or in the community. Other Men s and women s ministries sponsor events throughout the year including seasonal events, retreats, mission opportunities and chances to gather and share a meal and inspirational stories. Senior adults are an active part of our church family and, as such, Gayton has ministries designed to encourage their continuing spiritual growth. Once a month, our Seniors gather for lunch and a topical discussion and/or outing of interest. Young adults also meet occasionally for social events like Wii Olympics, game nights and more. 25

Missions & Partners Gayton was founded as a mission to its community by a church in another community, and the mindset of mission engagement continues. We strive to Share a Good Word and a Good Deed on mission. People fondly remember serving on mission from the very beginning of the church, both down the street and around the world. Community outreach and international mission experiences have shaped the fabric of Gayton on mission. The wide-ranging opportunities provide people of all ages the opportunity to be on mission. A community fair known for many years as Gayton Fest welcomed the neighborhood to a festival at Gayton. In recent years this event was held as a Fall Festival. The annual Feed My Starving Children food packaging event is a newer community event, bringing friends and neighbors together to help malnourished kids around the world. Every week, kids walk through the doors of Gayton through AGAPE Preschool, the SPACE Afterschool, and QUEST Summer Camp. Some of these kids are part of Gayton and others are part of our community. Many of Gayton s mission initiatives originated with significant volunteer leadership and developed into annual mission expressions in the life of the church and community. Our current mission support includes relationships with local organizations in Richmond and mission engagement around the world. We also provide financial support to Rick and Donna Martin, missionaries to Peru and members of Gayton, and The Gideons International. Through our partnerships, we seek to engage our partners with financial support, prayer and volunteer teams. 26

Local AGAPE, SPACE & QUEST AGAPE Preschool opened its doors in 2002 to provide a God-centered preschool experience in the community. It has grown to 100 students this year in a half-day schedule, and many of AGAPE s students are from throughout the community. In 2011, plans were being made for the ministries which would expand into an Outreach Center, and the SPACE opened its doors, providing the space between school and home for parents and kids who needed after school care. Buses pick up kids at 4 nearby elementary schools and provide an environment where they can work on homework, play, and spend time with caring staff. QUEST Summer Camp opened its doors after the Outreach Center was completed and offered its first camp in Each week a themed experience carries on the legacy of AGAPE and The SPACE throughout the summer. CARE MINISTRIES in the early years, a few volunteers stocked a small closet with food distributed by church staff upon request. Only a few families each year asked for assistance. After a jump start a few years ago, Care Ministries has steadily grown and will serve 1,200 families this year. The ministry uses food distribution as a front door to conversation, resourcing and prayer. The volunteer leadership team connects guests to opportunities FOOD PANTRY SHELVES ARE STOCKED EACH WEEK TO SERVE FAMILIES THROUGH CARE MINISTRIES for jobs, support, housing and other physical needs, while also seeking to provide spiritual support. 27

FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN A family raised the possibility of partnering with Feed My Starving Children in 2011, and the church rallied around the project, packing 100,000 meals for malnourished kids around the world. Volunteers join together for a weekend packing experience, mixing raw ingredients and packaging boxes to be shipped around the world. After 4 packing events, volunteers at Gayton have packed 552,096 meals which have been sent to Haiti, Zimbabwe, Uganda, and Kenya. VOLUNTEERS PACKAGE MEALS AT THE FEED MY STARVING CHILDREN PACKING EVENT YMCA The Outreach Center opened in 2014, and the partnership with the local John Rolfe YMCA branch was formed. Gayton provides space for the YMCA s growing recreational programs at a nominal cost to cover expenses, while the YMCA provides a complement to Gayton s current ministries. Youth recreational teams, adult exercise classes and community events have impacted many in our community. A GROUP OF MEN ENJOY A GAME OF PICKLE BALL IN THE OUTREACH CENTER TOOLBOX MINISTRY When volunteers recognized the vast experience and resources being put to work on youth mission trips each summer, they wanted a way to continue the experience throughout the rest of the year, and Toolbox Ministry was born. Utilizing a wide array of tools stored in the Toolbox Truck, along with the knowledge, skill and experience found in the church family, Toolbox Ministry serves families throughout the year in our community by providing home 28

maintenance and repairs, including painting, roof repair, handicap access ramps and more. SPIRIT OF BASEBALL Each year, Gayton serves as the hub of local organizations who provide a oneday, God-centered baseball camp in Richmond s Northside. A volunteer initiated this camp which has become an annual part of our missional expression. One of our significant partners in the camp is the Northside Outreach Center. NORTHSIDE OUTREACH CENTER Out of the Spirit of Baseball Camp, the Missions Council pursued a partnership with the Northside Outreach Center. The NOC provides youth programming for students in Richmond s Highland Park neighborhood, and Gayton has provided more than financial partnership. We collect school supplies for their local elementary school and gather Christmas gifts to source their comprehensive Christmas store program. The Toolbox Ministry has helped the NOC complete projects around their building and grounds, and Gayton members have provided leadership on the NOC s Board of Directors. KIDS PRACTICE BASE RUNNING AT THE SPIRIT OF BASEBALL CAMP COMMUNITY GARDEN Recognizing Gayton s commitment to providing food for the hungry, a small group of people began discussing a community garden to be hosted on Gayton s campus. In its first summer, 10 plots were filled, providing fresh food to the families who cared for the garden, as well as filling the Care Ministries Food Pantry shelves and offering educational opportunities for students in the community on growing fresh food. 29

National YOUTH MISSION TRIPS Gayton Youth have traveled on mission from Florida to New England and the Eastern Shore to Missouri. Summer mission trips have long been the highlight of the summer for Gayton s Youth, and each year, middle and high school students now experience how God is at work in the communities where they serve. Adult leaders and YOUTH AND ADULTS WORK SIDE-BY-SIDE ON ANNUAL SUMMER MISSION TRIPS youth serve side-by-side, and the youth remember of each person they meet and serve with in these communities. GAYTON FAMILY MISSION TRIP A Gayton Kids leader wanted to begin a family mission experience in 2011, and the Gayton Family Mission Trip quickly became an integral part of the summer for many families. Over a long weekend, families (from babies to grandparents) have the opportunity to serve with our partners, help with camps, community outreach events, complete construction projects and care for people. Global PANAMA PARTNERSHIP + INTERNATIONAL TEAMS International mission teams have long been important in the fabric of Gayton. In recent years, the emphasis has centered around the Panama Partnership, forged through the BGAV, and has involved numerous teams in Vacation Bible School, construction and supporting the annual pastor s family retreat. The Missions Council is currently exploring our next international partnership. The growing multicultural footprint in our community means we have international flavor in our community without traveling around the world. The opportunities continue to be laid before us to Share a Good Word and a Good Deed in Short Pump and around the world. 30

Future In the Transition Team s quest to create this Church Profile, common themes became evident. Our team s goal has been to look to the Lord and ascertain what God has in store for Gayton. Additionally, our goal during this time of transition has been to work toward unity and to make necessary changes to prepare ourselves and our church for the next Senior Pastor. The information reflect hours of congregational feedback gathered from the Listening Sessions, interviews with staff and lay leaders, as well as observations from outside references. The following represents a summary of thoughts and impressions gathered that contribute to the strength of our church community: We have a rich history of following in obedience to the Lord s call. We see ourselves as a warm, welcoming body of believers who come from diverse faith backgrounds. Local and international mission opportunities such as mission trips, Toolbox Ministry, food pantry, Jazz Nativity, Feed My Starving Children, etc. allow many members to do important work for the Kingdom. We accept that everyone has the ability to serve and that they have a platform to do so. Gayton s Preschool functions as a faith based educational program that meets some of the unique needs of families in our communities. We have a strong relationship between staff and congregation in which the staff is approachable and in touch with the congregation and serve alongside members. The following represent concerns that need to be addressed by the church in the future: We have to commit to the development of a strategic, long-term master plan to clarify our vision for ministry within the Kingdom of God. We need to align existing and future programs with this plan under the direction of the Holy Spirit. 34

We need to prioritize staffing needs to reflect the needs of a multigenerational congregation. We need to quickly address the needs of our youth ministry in the absence of a High School Youth Minister. We need to improve internal and external communication within the organizational structure and better utilize social media and technology. We need to address how to best utilize the space afforded us through the building of the Outreach Center and how to account for cost associated with the space. We need to seriously examine our giving patterns and begin to match giving trends with staff and ministry needs. We need to creatively develop more discipleship training opportunities and improve the way that we develop key church leaders, particularly young adults. The Transition Team is confident this document provides a thorough perspective of our church s past, present and future. We trust the Lord in preparing the way for our Pastor Search Team as they discern His will in calling the next Senior Pastor for Gayton Baptist Church. 35
