2 Understand This James 1:19-20 (NRSV), 19 You must understand this, my beloved: let everyone be quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to anger; Quick to listen Quick, ταχύς tachús; Quick, swift, nimble. In the NT, figuratively, quick, swift, with the meaning of ready, prompt (James 1:19; Sept.: Prov. 29:20). Proverbs 29:20 (NRSV), Do you see someone who is hasty in speech? There is more hope for a fool than for anyone like that. Slow to speak, anger Slow, βραδύς bradús; Slow as opposed to tachús (5036), swift or quick. Anger, ὀργή orgḗ; noun from orégō (3713), covet after, desire; is desire with grief. Wrath, anger as a state of mind. Contrast θυμός, thumós (2372), indignation, wrath as the outburst of a vengeful mind. 20 for your anger does not produce God s righteousness. There is a difference between mans and God s anger.

3 Rid Yourselves James 1:21 (NRSV), Therefore rid yourselves of all sordidness and rank growth of wickedness, and welcome with meekness the implanted word that has the power to save your souls. Rid, 659. ἀποτίθημι apotíthēmi; from apó (575), from/separation, and títhēmi (5087), to set, put, place, lay. Soridness, ῥυπαρία rhuparía; noun from rhuparós (4508), dirty, filthy. Filth, filthiness, figuratively in a moral sense Rank growth, περισσεία perisseía; noun from perissós (4053), over and above. A superfluity, an overflowing, something above the ordinary (Rom. 5:17) Wickedness, κακία kakía; noun from kakós (2556), bad. Wickedness as an evil habit of the mind, while ponēría (4189) is the active outcome of the same, doing and being evil.

Welcome, δέχομαι déchomai; To accept an offer deliberately and readily. To take to oneself what is presented or brought by another, to receive Meekness, πραΰτης praǘtēs; noun from praǘs (4239), meek. Meekness, but not in a man s outward behavior only, nor in his relations to his fellow man or his mere natural disposition. It is an inwrought grace of the soul, and the expressions of it are primarily toward God (James 1:21; 3:13; 1 Pet. 3:15; Sept.: Ps. 45:4). It is that attitude of spirit we accept God s dealings with us as good and do not dispute or resist. It is a condition of mind and heart which demonstrates gentleness, not in weakness, but in power. It is a balance born in strength of character..

Implanted, ἔμφυτος émphutos; adj. from emphúō (n.f.), to implant, which is from en (1722), in, and phúō (5453), to germinate, to grow or spring up, produce. Inborn, implanted. Word, λόγος lógos; noun from légō (3004), to speak intelligently. Intelligence, word as the expression of that intelligence, discourse, saying, thing. Save, σώζω sṓzō; from sṓs (n.f.), safe, delivered. To save, deliver, make whole, preserve safe from danger, loss, destruction.

6 Doers of the Word James 1:22-25 (NRSV), 22 But be doers of the word, and not merely hearers who deceive themselves. Deceive, παραλογίζομαι paralogízomai; from pará (3844), aside, implying error, hence, wrongly, and logízomai (3049), to exercise one s reason. To reason falsely or incorrectly. 23 For if any are hearers of the word and not doers, they are like those who look at themselves in a mirror; 24 for they look at themselves and, on going away, immediately forget what they were like. Which Word? Verse 21, implanted Word, which is Christ! 25 But those who look into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and persevere, being not hearers who forget but doers who act they will be blessed in their doing. Perfect law, accusative case, with the object being hearers of the Word. Doers, ποιητής poiētḗs; noun from poiéō (4160), to make. One who makes something, a doer, performer, poet ἔργον érgon; noun from érgō (n.f.), to work. Work, performance, the result or object of employment, making or working.

7 James 1:17-18 (NRSV), 17 Every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change. 18 In fulfillment of his own purpose he gave us birth by the word of truth, so that we would become a kind of first fruits of his creatures.

8 Putting Away James words are similar to Paul s words Ephesians 4:25-27 (NKJV), Therefore, putting away [having put away-aorist participle] lying [singular], Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. 26 Be angry, and do not sin : do not let the sun go down on your wrath, 27 nor give place to the devil. A lie, falsehood Verb, ψεύδομαι pseúdomai; verb of pseúdō (n.f.), to cheat, defraud, falsify. To lie, to speak falsely or deceitfully Devil, Accuser, διάβολος diábolos; noun from diabállō (1225), to accuse. A false accuser, used for the devil. John 5:45 (NKJV), Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is one who accuses you Moses, in whom you trust. Colossians 2:14 (NKJV), having wiped out the handwriting of requirements that was against us, which was contrary to us. And He has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross.

9 Won t You be My Neighbor? Ephesians 4:25-27 (NKJV), Therefore, putting away lying, Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbor, for we are members of one another. Members of one another Who is this referring to? To only believers? Then is it OK to speak the lie to non-believers? It is speaking of all. Who is our neighbor?

10 Law Meets Grace Luke 10:25-28 (NRSV), 25 Just then a lawyer stood up to test Jesus. Teacher, he said, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 26 He said to him, What is written in the law? What do you read there? 27 He answered, You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself. 28 And he said to him, You have given the right answer; do this, and you will live.

11 Grace Defeats Law s Self-Justification Luke 10:29-37 (NRSV), 29 But wanting to justify himself, he asked Jesus, And who is my neighbor? 30 Jesus replied, A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and fell into the hands of robbers, who stripped him, beat him, and went away, leaving him half dead. 31 Now by chance a priest was going down that road; and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side. 32 So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side. 33 But a Samaritan while traveling came near him; and when he saw him, he was moved with pity. 34 He went to him and bandaged his wounds, having poured oil and wine on them. Then he put him on his own animal, brought him to an inn, and took care of him. 35 The next day he took out two denarii, gave them to the innkeeper, and said, Take care of him; and when I come back, I will repay you whatever more you spend. 36 Which of these three, do you think, was a neighbor to the man who fell into the hands of the robbers? 37 He said, The one who showed him mercy. Jesus said to him, Go and do likewise.
