Getting out of debt is a journey, and we want to take that journey with you, one baby step at a time. The nine week course begins on Thursday, March 19 at 6:30pm and ends at 8:00pm. One important tool is the zero-based budget. Like tackling any new skill, it can feel totally overwhelming at first. Of course, we know and you know that if we give ourselves time to master it, the zero-based budget becomes almost second nature. And then it is no longer a burden but a total blessing. Dave Ramsey says We have found that the zero-based budget is where it s at when it comes to winning with money. What are you going to do differently this year to turn your hope into reality? Try FPU for nine weeks and learn God s way of handling money and becoming debt free! 6 ASSIMILATION CLT has established a sub-committee to oversee the care of guests to FLCS. The committee will work on developing a comprehensive process which will enhance the first time guest s experience, as well as subsequent visits. The committee will follow up with guests over time and help to establish connections with others in our congregation through fellowship events and service. The goal of the process is to receive guests into the congregation as active and engaged members of the Body of Christ - Fairlawn Lutheran Church and School. Look for more information about the work this committee will be doing and how you may be involved in this vital new ministry at FLCS. CONNECTION NEWSLETTER MAILING Beginning with the April issue of the Connections newsletter the church will be primarily distributing it via . Members who need to receive paper copies are asked to note this on the ministry connection card or contact the church office. The printed newsletters will be placed in church mailboxes. Homebound congregants will have their copies directly mailed to their residence and our Welcome Center will have printed copies available for our guests. The move to a primarily digital distribution method will help to reduce the church s printing and paper costs, as well as, help us be better stewards of the environment. 7 CLT INFORMATION A Report from Your Community Life Team (CLT) Beginning sometime in March, your CLT will be embarking upon a Shepherding program for our Fairlawn Congregation. We have been engaged in recent months in cleaning up our church member and contact database. Following completion of this step, the Elders will be assigned groups of members for shepherding on a regular basis. Church staff will be reviewing member attendance records and other member information provided to the church office. Staff will then provide names to the appropriate Elder for follow-up. We ask that you receive this program with your prayers and your open arms as we seek to strengthen our congregational personal and spiritual relationships. FLCS THRIVENT CHAPTER FLCS Thrivent Choice Grant Applications Being Accepted For over four years, Thrivent Choice dollars have funded 16 ministry and service projects by FLCS and partners totaling over $15,000. We are open to new grant applications at any time. Eligible projects should be outreach in nature, are not funded by the regular church budget, and reflect partnering in funding and execution. Project leaders need only fill out a brief application form. Eligible FLCS Thrivent members review the requests and usually can give an approval in a week to ten days. For questions or assistance regarding Thrivent and FLCS Thrivent Choice grants, contact the FLCS Thrivent Lead Congregational Advocate, Jim Kroeger, at civicadvantage@gmail.com or Thrivent Choice Direction Deadline ~ Thrivent Choice is a program that allows Thrivent members to direct the company s dollars to selected charities and ministries, including Fairlawn Lutheran Church & School (FLCS). 9 STEWARDSHIP MONTHLY Why does giving seem so difficult? In reality, it isn t. But we make it difficult. We make it difficult because we re afraid. We re afraid that it isn t worth the investment. We re afraid that what we give to the church might be wasted, or that we could use it for something better, more enjoyable, more real, more tangible, more immediate, or even more important something more important than God and His gifts. The point is this: We struggle with giving because we don t believe as we should. We should fear, love, and trust in God above all things. And so we fail to give because we don t love God with our whole heart, soul, and mind. We fail to give because we don t fear Him more than we fear other things. We fail to give because we don t trust Him more than we trust the things we can more immediately see, taste, and touch. We don t trust that He will give us everything (EVERYTHING!) we need to support this body and life. For if we did fear, love, and trust in God above all things, we would see and know that all the other things that compete for our time, our talents, and our treasures pale in comparison to the joy of the real, tangible, and immediate love God has showered upon us in the proclamation of the forgiveness of sins on account of His Son s death, resurrection, and ascension. The only proper response to this is repentance: to confess our sin, stinginess, lack of fear, love, and faith in God s promises, and to trust in Him to help us bring our desire to do better to fruition. For God is not holding out on us. He never has. He never will. For if He has given us His only Son, how will He not also give us all things? He will. It is His promise. And these promises are sure and certain. The reality is that God doesn t need our giving. He doesn t need our time, our talents, or our treasures. He is God. We are not. He can do all things without our help. And even what we do give, even the good and righteous things we do accomplish, these are but filthy rags, as the prophet Isaiah tells us. All of us have become like one who is unclean, and all our righteous acts are like filthy rags; we all shrivel up like a leaf, and like the wind our sins sweep us away. (Isaiah 64:6 NIV) Our gifts to God and to the Church are like a child s gift of dandelions to his mother. They are weeds, which most of us spend an entire summer trying to rid our yards of them. And yet despite the fact that they are weeds, mothers always receive them with a smile and with joy. They will even put them in vases and display them on tables and countertops. They will recount to friends and other family members how their child gave them flowers, just to say I love you and I m thankful for all you do. Our Lord, too, receives with joy and a smile the gifts we give in thanksgiving and praise of what He has done. Even though these gifts are but weeds, filthy rags, and despite the fact that He doesn t need them to accomplish what He wills, He receives them and puts it to use for our and our neighbor s good. That is the real joy of giving. He doesn t need us. Yet He makes use of us. He employs us in His service despite it. He makes all that we do our giving, our work, our service to our family and friends and neighbors holy. And He blesses it for their and our good and to the glory of His name. So is giving so hard? Nah, it s like giving dandelions to our mothers. And when dinner is ready, when the food is on the table, she ll gladly have a vase full of them right in the middle. The Lord has prepared a table for you. Dinner is ready. The table is set. His Body and Blood are given to strengthen and nourish you. And right there, where Christ is with us, are the dandelions we gave. He has put them to use for our good, for our forgiveness, for our life in Him Stewardship Team: Judy Corbett Bob Fischer Pastor Gau Bob Hessel Paul Hinderegger Ron Kyle Larry Long P A G E 9

10 HUMAN CARE ~ JACQUIE KYLE MISSION OF THE MONTH FOR MARCH HAVEN OF REST: IN MARCH our congregation and friends are collecting non-perishable food for Haven of Rest, which serves over 200,000 meals on site, per year, for hungry men, women, and children. Please place your food donations in the collection box inside the church front door. Thank you! CHALLENGE GIFT: Again this year our congregation will use the opportunity to have our gift make twice the impact. Area businesses have joined together and given Haven of Rest a matching gift of $50,000 with the challenge to have other friends of the ministry turn that combined gift into $100,000. Our congregation is sending a budgeted $2,000 to help meet the challenge, so our gift will go twice as far to providing food, shelter and other services to homeless and poor men, women, and children. Update on our January winter clothing collection for Haven of Rest: Bags, and bags, and bags of winter clothing were taken to Haven of Rest at the end of January. One of our new Human Care Team members, Jean Wurzbacher, and her husband Dan, took another big load to Haven of Rest as the box was filled again in Mid-February, so we could make many more people warm as soon as possible! Thank you Jean and Dan, and thanks to everyone who cared and donated warm clothing for those people who really needed it! Contact Missy Klein at OPEN M, , ext. 418, or projects@openm.org for more information. Check the Mission Tower to view pictures and information regarding OPEN M 2014 Year in Review. Dottie Achmoody, OPEN M CEO, wrote a cover article in the Feb Monthly Report to the Community. Following is an excerpt from this article which is entitled, Investing in the Eternal in Dottie relates that she recently lost her oldest sister, Billie, whom she loved dearly, and now she sees the need to reevaluate how she spends her days. I know that nothing is more important than focusing on things that are eternal. At OPEN M, we are investing in the eternal as we invest in lives, taking the hand of a brother or sister and lifting them up. We are sharing Christ s love in action. Thank you for coming alongside of us and making it possible to feed the hungry, care for the sick, build up families and help transform this community. I thank you with all my heart for the sacrifices you have made in order to share, give, and serve with us. I know at OPEN M we will have a good year because we depend on God to guide, direct, and plan our days. What about you? What is going to take up most of your time, treasure, and talents? In their hearts humans plan their course, but the LORD establishes their steps. Proverbs 16:9. P A G E 1 0
