2 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time 2 August 20, 2017 Dear Friends, A MESSAGE FROM FR JOSEPH The gospel of the Twentieth Sunday Cycle A presents us a Jesus who appears to be cold, even callous to the woman crying out for help First, Jesus refuses to help her saying, My mission is only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel" (15:24) Then, he appears to insult her by saying, It is not right to take the food of the children and feed it to the dogs" To understand the message of the gospel reading, we are to remember that God's mercy and love is available to all That is what is at the heart of the gospel passage The Canaanite woman who seeks help at first receives the response she should expect from a Jew: It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs"(15:26) This follows the Jewish custom of speaking about the gentiles as dogs Jesus purposely spoke in a way that the Jews would expect a Jew to speak Then He turns the tables on them Because this woman has great faith and persists in pleading for her child, He heals her daughter In Christ, all divisions and differences between people are irrelevant There are no foreigners, no outcast in the kingdom of God Remember what Paul says in Galatians: There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor female All are one in Christ (3:28) God's mercy is extended to all who call upon Him in faith As disciples of Jesus, we are called to love God, love others and build His kingdom on earth starting from our families, our parish, and our workplaces I would ask you to pray, in a special way, for the effort of rebuilding our faith community, especially for ourselves, for our young people and young families May the Lord continue to bless us and make us His disciples who are willing to reach out to everyone we meet in our lives In Christ s peace, joy, and service RELIGIOUS EDUCATION Registrations for this year s Religious Education classes are now being accepted Registration forms have been mailed out but can also be picked up in the parish office Please complete the registration form and return it to Sr Peggy at the parish office by Wednesday, August 30th NEW MASS!!!! Beginning on September 3rd, there will be a 5:30 pm Sunday Mass which will fulfill the Sunday obligation The Mass will alternate between St Mary s in West Point and Sacred Heart in Fort Madison (more centrally located in town) On the first and third Sundays of the month, the Mass will be held in Fort Madison On the second and fourth Sundays of the month, the Mass will be held at St Mary s in West Point For more information, check Mass schedules in the church bulletins If you are interested and able to assist at this Mass as Lector, Eucharistic Ministers, Servers, Ministers of Hospitality and/or music, please call the church office MINISTERS NEEDED!! We will need stewards to fulfill the various ministries for the new Mass, such as Lector, Eucharistic Ministers, Servers, Ministers of Hospitality and music If you are interested and able to assist at this Mass, please call the office of the church you wish to serve at, for Sacred Heart and for St Mary s If you don t want to be assigned to this Mass, you ll also need to call the office KIDZONE STEWARDS As registration continues to grow for our new Kid Zone, we need stewards to help with the 6 months - 2 y/o group, and others to assist the leaders teach the 3-6 y/o children during the 10:30 am Mass on Sunday mornings Youth from grades 6 through 12, singles, child-free couples and empty-nesters would be ideal as helpers This will require about an hour and a half of your time on the occasional Sunday morning and the Virtus training required by the Diocese of Davenport for people working with children, elderly or disabled If you are interested, please call Rita at or Carleen at

6 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time 6 August 20, 2017 INDOOR PLANTS If anyone has indoor plants, of any size, they would like to donate, they will be used to decorate the altars at Sacred Heart Church Plants can be dropped off at the parish office or at the church Thank you for your generosity VICTIM ASSISTANCE To report child abuse contact: Iowa Department of Human Services Child Abuse Hotline: and if it involves clergy or church personnel also notify Alicia Owens, the Victim Assistance Coordinator, ; vac@diodavorg or PO Box 232, Bettendorf, IA CRUSADER S CORNER August 23rd will be the first day of school for the school year Please keep our students, teachers, and families in your prayers Please visit the Holy Trinity Website for more information & the calendar: wwwholytrinityschoolsorg CATHOLIC RADIO STATION To learn more about your Catholic faith, tune into KDME, 983 FM in Fort Madison and 977 FM in outlying areas These stations are your Truth and Life Catholic radio stations ST MARGARET S HOUSE A few weeks ago, a couple of our parishioners, Dianna Holmes and Rose Pohlpeter went to Indiana to serve those in need at St Margaret s House This article, submitted by Dianna, reflects on this mission St Margaret's House was established in 1990 It is located in downtown South Bend, IN Deacon Sarah Tracy looked around the city and saw "the Marys" of the day on the streets in downtown About 25 women set out to open a day center so that women in great need could have a meal, feel safe for a few hours, make new friends, and seek assistance to get themselves off the streets Initially this was done on one floor, but has expanded to 3 floors today A receptionist greets all guests with them signing in when they enter There are bathroom-shower facilities available, laundry area, children play area, craft area in which artesian ladies make silk scarves to sell and other crafts are made, a clothes closet, a community telephone and services such as copying and faxing available, at no cost to the guest There are 7 staff members and over 100 volunteers per week who assist the ladies of St Margaret's At lunch, a gathering of the guests receive announcements of the day, sharing time between the staff and guests, and a prayer offered by one of the guests Some guests come only for the noon meal, others stay all day Some come only to do laundry and some to just rest Other guests seek help from staff members for various issues During the summer, there are more guests than usual--they are the children and grandchildren Besides the inside play area, staff members take the children to local parks, do crafts, work in the community garden (older students) or visit other interesting spots in the area Some of my responsibilities, while there, were assisting at the reception desk, filling in as a cook for a volunteer who had surgery one morning, greeting donors dropping off clothing and household items, sorting clothing, assisting guests in the clothes closet selecting items, helping a guest with a job application on the computer, watching over the children in the play area, putting toiletry bags together, etc Each day you never knew what you'd be asked to help with Although St Margaret's is not a Catholic venture, today's staff and volunteers include many nuns, novices, and Catholic laypersons Catholic churches as well as Notre Dame and Holy Cross institutions are supporting the ministry of St Margaret's It is a real community effort!! ~ Dianna Holmes
