Crumbs are Enough By Daniel Vang Aug. 17, 2014 Grace, mercy, and peace be to you from God the Father and from our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. Amen. Our text for today s sermon is based off of today s Gospel reading found in Matthew chapter fifteen verses twenty-six to twenty-eight, it reads: [Jesus] replied, It is not right to take the children s bread and toss it to their dogs. Yes, Lord, she said, but even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters table. Then Jesus answered, Woman, you have great faith! Your request is granted. And her daughter was healed from that very hour. I have a confession to make. Alex (wife), you re not gonna like this. Brothers and sisters in Christ, you may not like hearing this, too. But I love French fries. Not just any sort of French fries, but I love to eat McDonald s French fries. It s true! I mean, who doesn t love their French fries? They have a near-perfect shade of gold and yellow. They re so crisp and they have the right amount crunch alongside that soft potato-ie inside. I don t know how they do it *AHEM* Okay, they fry it! Mmmm I can smell them right now. How does that jingle go again? Mmmm I m lovin it. But do you know what I really enjoy about the French fry eating experience though? No, it s not when I m handed the fries. And it s actually not when I m eating them. No. My joy in this eating experience comes after all of the normal-looking fries have been eaten and then I m left with all of those itty-bitty edges. Oh, you know what I m talking about. We ve all been there before. If it s not French fries, it s a steak dinner, or some decadent dessert. I tend not to leave anything behind on its dish especially of it is really good. And those finger-licking itty-bitty edges are like little bits of small rich golden nuggets left behind by the great and masterful fry-cook. Those little things, for whatever 1
reason, always seem to complete my eating experience but more importantly they satisfy me in a way that allows me to cherish every bit of food I get to consume even if it s just those little bits. So you see, even little crumbs are good enough. Wasn t that what the Canaanite woman received? It surely wasn t a full slice of bread itself, just crumbs. After all, it s clear she was in agreement with Jesus when He said, It is not right to take the children s bread and toss it to their dogs. She knew the bread of the Messiah was meant for God s children and not for foreigners like herself, hence her reply, Yes Lord, But she continued on, even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters table. Have you wondered what that s supposed to mean? Well, consider this. Many of you have had young children at some point in time or maybe you ve had some family or friends that have young ones. How did those kids eat at the table? I can tell you for a fact, my kids would probably win some sort of award for messiest eaters. There s stuff all over their face and on the table, and you can bet that you ll find stuff underneath the table. It s can be so frustrating sometimes to feed children. Do you know what I mean? There are times when they can be so compliant and then there are other times when they are fighting against you and rejecting everything you have to offer. It s literally a battlefield! The Jews were that way with the good gifts of Christ. As they turned away from Him and rejected His love, His teaching, His role as Savior, they were making the scraps available to those, like this woman, who were ready to receive Jesus and His gifts thankfully. According to the Gospels, Jesus spent time in his ministry feeding people with both physical sustenance and spiritual substance. In other words, with food and His word. I m sure you re 2
all familiar with the feeding of the 5,000. It was recorded in all four Gospels. So it s hard to miss. And I m sure a miracle like that went unnoticed having only to offer a couple of fish and two loaves of bread. It was amazing! So do you know what the 5,000 did after Jesus left? Naturally they tracked him down because they wanted more. And when they finally caught up with him they were in for a big surprise. They didn t receive any pieces of bread. They weren t even left with crumbs. They were left with Jesus. And the more he spoke about himself as the bread of life, as being all that they ever need, the more his own people began to walk away dissatisfied and furious. The bread of life which was meant for the children of Israel was rejected by many of the chosen that day. It s sad to think that Jesus was overshadowed by his own miracle. The people were so enamored with the bread that they completely lost sight of Jesus and who He is as the Great Provider for body and soul. We as children of God can make the same mistake as these Jews of the first century. We can become complacent and indifferent about Jesus, as the bread of life, and instead, think of Him just as the provider of our stuff. And by doing so, our indifference can lead our neighbors to believe that they can live without Him -- that there are other various kinds of breads worth eating and the one which God s people possess, -- well, so many of the modern food critics seem to agree that His message as the Bread of Life is just old, unattractive, and meaningless. That is a major blow. But that s not even the worst part. Though the criticism of others is harsh, some of us are okay with it because it is still our bread. And we will survive as long as there are crumbs. Now how selfish is that? Even as our misguided neighbors approach their end, we do not savor the Bread of Jesus enough to share it with them. 3
Back to the story. Then this woman, a Canaanite woman (despised by the Jews) came before Jesus. It was likely she had only heard of Jesus. So this may have been her first encounter with him. She pleaded and pleaded just for the crumbs, and Jesus resisted never letting down his guard only to find that she was clinging on to hope in Him. She trusted Him; and she was rewarded for her faith. Though she only received crumbs, she received the Messiah, the Bread of life. Crumbs are small enough that they either go unnoticed or they can be considered to be trash. And I m sure we all can agree that it s pretty much impossible to survive on crumbs. But you know what? Crumbs are like little teasers. Do you know what I mean? Have you ever spotted a trail of crumbs and decided to pick them up with your finger-tip and eat them? My kids have done it plenty of times I have, too. But once I get a taste of it, I m usually quick to thinking what is this? I need to know what this is! And then I m led down to a path of discovery. But we don t want to be like the Jews of Jesus day. We can t keep it all for ourselves. This bread is meant to be passed on from one person to the next and we can start here in this community. If we leave tracks of crumbs leading up to our churches, people will be curious as to what they are tasting and what they will eventually find. Take for example the Comfort-Dog ministry with Lila. With Lila, we ve been able to provide a presence ministry for people who are in need of being lifted up. Many people are drawn to her, and through her Beautiful Savior is recognized within the community and the Gospel is shared. The Karenni ministry is another example. This church alongside a number of others have been involved in the caring of these people for the past five years. And over such a span of time, you all have seen how deeply these people have come to know Jesus Christ as their Lord 4
and Savior through the countless number of hours you all have shared with them. The love and care that you all have poured out, they have tasted and have traced it back to Jesus! These are only two examples, and there s likely to be more. We don t have to stop there! People are hungry for something real and meaningful, and we as God s people have it here. It is our hope that they might find themselves at the foot of the cross where Jesus laid down his life for all of us. It s there that they will find their fill for all eternity. Brothers and sisters, crumbs were enough for this Canaanite woman to understand how rich God s mercy was. And in a sense, she not only understood, but she tasted mercy. Brothers and sisters, through the blood of Jesus Christ we have become recipients of this wonderful bread. What a blessing! We literally get to celebrate and receive it every time we have Communion. We get to partake in this wondrous feast that proclaims God s promises of forgiveness and eternal life. And what we get to celebrate at this altar is just a teaser, a teaser of the great banquet from which we will get to celebrate with Jesus and the rest of the church triumphant in paradise. So as we head out those church doors, don t think about how crumby this service was, but cling to those crumbs that are filled with Jesus promises for you. May the peace of God which surpasses all understanding keep your hearts and mind in Christ Jesus. Amen. 5
