2 Salt and Light Matthew 5:13-16 You are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled under foot. You are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hid. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house. 6 Beatitudes Matthew 5:1-12 When Jesus saw the crowds, he went up the mountain; and after he sat down, his disciples came to him. Then he began to speak, and taught them, saying: Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled. Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Blessed are you when people revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. Reoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. Blessed statements carry the depth of shalom within them. For Jesus to say blessed is for him to express the wisdom of God that shapes a Spirit-led fruit-filled life, the life that is marked by righteousness that exceeds that of the scribes and pharisees (Mt. 5:20). This life is fit for the kingdom of God. Not ust poor, but poor in spirit. It s the most basic quality necessary for the Christian, a deep and profound awareness of our spiritual poverty. This is the spiritual humility that causes us to turn to God in our need for a Savior. 51

Blessed are they that mourn. True, all persons experience grief of many sorts. But the mourning which the people of God do is a unique mourning. They grieve in Zion; they grieve that God s people can be devastated by enemies; that Jerusalem can be destroyed; that the church can be attacked. This is a grieving that waits for the promised restoration in Christ. Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth. Old Testament Reading Psalm 37:3-6 New Testament Reading Philippians 2:4-5 Blessed are the meek. The meek are those who willingly serve God in whatever place or task to which they are called. Self-promoters may aim to gain the whole world, but the meek apply all their efforts to be obedient in building Christ s kingdom. Old Testament Reading Psalm 27:4 New Testament Reading Matthew 6:33 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst after righteousness. Thankfully, God gives the righteousness of Christ to us. Passionate Christians really want and ardently pursue becoming consistently devout and good persons. They desire being morally and spiritually right. 9 Blessed are the merciful, for they will receive mercy. Old Testament Reading Micah 6:8 New Testament Reading Ephesians 4:31-32 Blessed are the merciful. Mercy always addresses misery. Mercy is intent on relieving the miserable effects of sin. Since alienation from God is the most tragic effect of sin, merciful Christians address people s misery by calling them into the kingdom of life through faith in Jesus Christ. We are pure in heart when we intentionally will ust one thing. We lose our purity of heart when we are lured to seeking the multitude of things that are offered around us. The single aim of the pure-of-heart Christian is to see God and to do everything for his glory. Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God. Old Testament Reading Psalm 122:6-9 New Testament Reading James 3:17-18 Sung Prayer for Peace For the Healing of the Nations Lift Up Your Hearts 18 Blessed are the peacemakers. Personal shalom! Community shalom! A whole, healthy spirit and body the way things are supposed to be! So Christians strive for shalom in their own lives and in the lives of others to be right with God, to trust him, and to obey him. 53

10 Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Old Testament Reading Psalm 34:15-18 New Testament Reading I Peter 4:12-14 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness. Working for shalom, building the kingdom of God, is actually living with counter-cultural values. Against such values, Satan is opposed, and one of his strategies is a frontal attack of persecution. Or it may be a disguised attack as an angel of light. But either way, attack he will. Gospel The Beatitudes The Word of the Lord Thanks be to God! Sermon The Eschatological Promises Prayers of the People We Are Sent... A Blessed People setting by Arvo Pärt * Doxology Romans 11:33, 36 O the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his udgments and how inscrutable his ways. For from him, and through him, and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever. Amen. Arvo Pärt writes: I have discovered that it is enough when a single note is beautifully played. This one note, or a silent beat, or a moment of silence, comforts me. In The Beatitudes each phrase centers around a single chord. Each statement of who is blessed is separated from the blessing itself by 3 beats of silence, and then separated from the next phrase by 6 beats of silence.
