KNOW THE GOD OF THE BIBLE The Promise of the Son of God-Gospel of John Introduction: The Gospel of John was written sometime between AD, excluding AD. All of the books of the New Testament were written in this time period. The temple was destroyed in 70 AD and books were not written during this upheaval of the Jewish people. The author was John, one of Jesus original twelve apostles. Some of the early church fathers testified to John as the author. Polycarp knew the apostle John, Irenaeus knew Polycarp, and Irenaeus (180AD) said the apostle John wrote a gospel. Eusebius, one of the earliest church historians, wrote about the various people who testified to the writers of the New Testament. A writer of any book in the New Testament was either one of the original twelve or an associate of one of the twelve. The purpose for writing the Gospel of John is found in chapter 20, verses 30 & 31. John wanted to give evidence for Jesus, the Christ as also being God. The Message of the Gospel of John The Gospel of John emphasizes believing and knowing perhaps more than any other book in the Bible. The key structural verses 20:30-31 are in support of that view. The Gospel s view of believing is introduced in 1:12 which combines believing and receiving Jesus as necessary to the believers life in God. The message of the Gospel of John is in tune with the other Gospels. This message is focused on Jesus as the expression of God s holy love, who lived, died, and resurrected from the dead, in order to give the one who believed and received Him forgiveness of sins and eternal life. There are seven miracles giving evidence of the power of God in Christ Jesus. Each miracle demonstrates power and ability beyond any human being. John is inspired to write to compare the God of the Old Testament with Jesus as God. The use of the phrase, in the Beginning. The use of the, I am s, as demonstrated with God in the burning bush, who said, I am that I am.
Use the NIV Bible if you want your study paragraphs checked. INDUCTIVE BIBLE STUDY GUIDE Inductive Study: Learning to see, find meaning and apply the message of the Bible without assistance of commentaries and books. Bible: Use the Bible translation you normally read. Basic Message of the Bible: The Bible is the revealed message from the God of PROMISE, PARDON and PRESENCE demonstrating His Holy Love through the Living Word, Jesus Christ. I. OBSERVING: What are the main words, people or message preached? - Use a Bible dictionary or English dictionary if the word is not Understood. -Keep three questions before you. 1. What does it say? 2. Where does it say that? 3. Is that what it says? -What is the main idea of each paragraph? -What is the main idea of each chapter? -Write in four words or less a title for each paragraph, the title should identify the main idea. Words such as with, to, in, and but, or, a, an, the, and any other preposition, conjunction, or article do not count as part of your total of four words. Only words in the paragraph or chapter may be used in the title. II. INTERPRETING: What is the message or meaning of these verses? -What does this mean? -After observing, writing the titles, write out some interpretation or meaning you discovered. -Interpret or write the meaning based on your observation of the facts and words. III. APPLY: How does this message or meaning apply to my life or the life of someone else? -How will this work in my life or the life of someone else? -After observing, interpreting, and finding meaning, apply that
meaning to life. -What does God expect from me? -What do I expect God will do in my life? Once the cycle of observing, interpreting and applying is developed in your mind, this process will become automatic in your study of any book of the Bible. This is a study to learn the message of the Gospel of John by writing paragraph titles and discovering one word titles for each chapter. This process will teach you how to observe or see the actual words written, learn how to find the interpretation or meaning based on your observation and then apply the meaning to your life or someone else. These exercises will keep you focused on what is actually written in the scripture. EXAMPLE: of paragraph titles and chapter titles. Chapter 1 Title Witness for Chapter The Word is God (the Word s Witness) 6-9 John Sent to Witness (John s Witness) Born of God By Receiving Him (Birth Witness) The Word From God Became Flesh (God s Witness) John is Not the Christ (John s Witness) The Spirit and John Witness to the Son (the Spirit & John Witness) John s Disciples Follow Jesus (Disciples Witness; Skeptic Witness) Nathaniel Witnesses to the Son of God (Nathaniel s Witness) Key Verse: John 1:12 Become a believer: Believe, receive and become.
EXAMPLE: of picking one paragraph for observing, interpreting and applying : to become a child of God I must believe and receive Jesus Christ. : When I believe and receive Jesus Christ I am a child of God. : I now believe and receive Jesus Christ so I am now a child of God. I keep my relationship with God by continuing to believe in Jesus Christ.

Spiritual Death John 6:47-48 Spiritual Death begins by disobedience: Genesis 2:17 & 3:3 God Said, "in the day you eat you shall surely die This is not a punishment but a result This act was a demonstration of humans thinking they know more than God. The way God demonstrated love for every human being was to allow the death of an animal to take the place of human eternal death. The animal died, God statement remained true. The animal became a substitute for the human sin. The sacrificial system was set in place in the beginning of the human race: Genesis 4:1-16 Abel brought an animal sacrifice and shed the animals blood for his sin. Cain did not bring an animal sacrifice and God did not accept it as sufficient for his sin. The sacrificial practice continued: Genesis 8:20 Noah built an altar and offered sacrifices. The Blessing of God through Abraham has come to all people on Earth: Genesis 12:1-3 Abraham Believed God 15:6 Obeyed God 12:4 Worshiped God-built an altar Genesis 12:8, 13:4
Passover-the blood sacrifice delivered people from death: Exodus 12:21-28 The death angel passed over the house where blood was over the door. Sin Offering-offering sacrifices for their sins was a regular practice of God's people: Leviticus 4:32-35 The promised Messiah or Christ would bless all people by being a one time sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. (Genesis 12:1-3) Isaiah and the other prophets prophesied the coming messiah who would deliver every human being from the penalty of their sin. Isaiah 53:1-12 The Gospels-Good News Jesus came to save the believer from the penalty of sin, "and she will bear a son and you shall call His name Jesus, for it is He who will save His people from their sins". Matthew 1:21 Jesus came to give His life to ransom sinners from the penalty of their sin. Mark 10:45. Jesus came to save or deliver anyone who is lost in their sin. Luke 19:10. Jesus came to offer Himself as food for the soul. When a person believes and receives Jesus as the sacrifice for their sin, the Spirit of God enters the believer to feed and nurture his or her soul. Also, the believer shall live in the presence of God eternally. John 6:47-58

Gospel of John 8 Chapter 8 Title Pick a paragraph for:
The last verse in Chapter Seven and the first eleven verses in Chapter Eight are not found in the oldest manuscripts of the Gospel of John. All of the books in the New Testament are written in the Greek language and need to be translated into another language, such as English. The manuscripts of the New Testament are what we would call books in our day. These manuscripts or books for translation are dated around 130AD for a fragment of the Gospel of John 18:31-33 which can be seen in the John Rylands Library in Manchester England and 325AD for a complete manuscript of the New Testament. When information in a piece of a manuscript or in one of the oldest manuscripts is not available for a translator, he or she will make a notation in the New Testament letting the reader know about the missing information. The translator does not try to take information out of the Bible but must let the reader know about the missing information from available manuscripts. The information questioning the manuscripts does not change the message of the Bible. Jesus is still the Son of Man who died for our sins, He is still the Christ or Messiah who came to fulfill scriptures and He is still the resurrected Lord and the only Son of God. The message is the forgiveness of sins and the hope of eternal life.
