JOE We re still working through the nomination process for the Pastoral Council as I type this, but 152 individual adults and 12 young parishioners were nominated to be members last Sunday. What a tremendous sign of vitality in our parish! Obviously, that s way too many names to put on a single ballot and many of those folks received a single nomination. We re first eliminating those not eligible to serve (such as those currently on the Council, those just leaving the Council, or members of the parish staff), and then contacting those who received the most nominations to see if they re willing to serve, in order to put together an appropriate slate for the 5 positions to be filled. Many thanks to all who have participated! Fr. Scott will be away, serving as chaplain at Camp Guggenheim this week. Please keep him and the campers in your prayers. Visit Fr. Joe's blog: PRECEPTS OF THE CHURCH 1. To attend Mass and rest from servile work on Sundays and holy day of obligation 2. To observe the days of fasting and abstinence from meat established by the Church 3. To confess your sins at least once a year 4. To receive Holy Communion at least once a year, during the Easter season 5. To contribute to the support of the Church according to your ability 6. To obey the laws of the Church concerning marriage What do I need to do to be a good Catholic? Over the centuries, the Church has developed a trustworthy answer to that question. From the beginning, following Jesus Christ has called for a distinct way of living. Together with the Ten Commandments, the Precepts of the Church (also known as the "Commandments of the Church") represent the necessary minimum required of Catholics to remain in good standing with the Church which makes them just a starting point, not an end goal. (Keep in mind that they speak only to our external actions, but not our interior motives.) The Church uses these Precepts to remind us that an authentic Christian life demands a certain level of commitment to prayer and participation in the liturgy and sacraments. These Precepts are obligatory; to intentionally violate them without a legitimate reason (for example, sickness preventing someone from attending Mass) is a matter of mortal ( deadly ) sin, which cuts off our relationship with Christ and his Church. PLEASE NOTE The 12:05pm Mass Intention at Notre Dame Church on Wednesday, July 29th will be offered for Past and Present Students of Malone Catholic Schools. Dear Friends in Christ: A LETTER FROM OUR BISHOP During the weekend Masses of July 25 th and 26 th, the parishioners of Adirondack, Clinton, Essex, Franklin and Hamilton/ Herkimer Deaneries will be given an opportunity to support our missionaries with the Missionary Projects of the Diocese of Ogdensburg (MPDO) Collection. Did you know that our diocese founded the parish of St. Martin de Porres in Mollendo, Peru? From 1962 to 2003, many of our priests ministered to the Peruvians in Mollendo. Maybe you know or remember some of them: Father Steve Rocker, Father Robert Decker, Father Patrick Mundy, Father William Muench, Father Jay Seymour, Father Guy Edwards, Father George Maroun, Father Andrew Amyot, Father Daniel Chapin, Father Francis Flynn, Father John Looby and Father John Kennehan. We continue to reach out to the Mollendo parishioners through prayer and sacrificial giving. The parishioners of St. Martin de Porres need our help now. For thirty years, they have relied on the same truck to bring students to Faith Formation Class, transport family members to a health clinic, and provide for the essential transportation needs of the parish and its parishioners. The truck is now beyond repair and they have no other means to replace it than through your generosity at this time. Our main goal with this MPDO collection is to help them purchase a new truck. Can we count on your support? As you know, this collection focuses on other important needs, as well. Your generous response to this Appeal supports the United States Bishop s annual appeal for Latin America and other missionary projects throughout the world that our diocese deems appropriate as part of our evangelization efforts. The collection is used to provide U.S. Bishop s annual appeal for Latin America, missionary projects in the world the Diocese deems appropriate as part of its evangelization efforts and most importantly, for continued financial support of our former mission in Mollendo, Peru. The parishioners of Mollendo need our help now. Their heavily relied upon thirty year old truck which is used for transportation over rocky roads, moving students to Faith Formation Class, taking families to the health clinic and essentially every other basic need, is now beyond repair. The series Living Stones Foundations of Parishes is inspired by Bishop LaValley s call for Living Stones in our parishes, people whose service outside their church reflects what happens inside the sacred walls. The subjects are men and women from generations ago who in effect were stones within their parishes. We hope to make this fully representative of our parishes, but we can t do it without your help. Are you aware of somebody who was very active at promoting the faith in your parish years ago and who equally set a good example by his or her service to the community? Perhaps it was somebody in your family, possibly a parent or grandparent. You are invited to research and write about your nominee. The Meaning of Human Sexuality The tangible, earthly, corporeal world is more than inert matter or modeling clay for the human will. Creation is sacred. It has sacramental meaning. It reflects God s glory. That includes our bodies. Our sexuality has the power to procreate, and shares in the dignity of being created in the image of God. We need to live accordingly. Pope Francis will be participating in the WMF as part of his apostolic visit to the United States in September. FORMATION FOR MINISTRY Is God Calling You to Lay Ministry in the Church? The Formation for Ministry program is accepting applications for the next cycle that begins in Sept in the following locations: Port Leyden, Peru and Clayton. Applications are due August 1. DIOCESAN EVENTS World Meeting of Families Steve Tartaglia, Director of the Office of Family Life, and Marika Donders, Director of the Office of the New Evangelization will offer a 2-hour workshop based on the book Love is Our Mission: The Family Fully Alive. The workshop is to provide an overview for anyone interested in the love of God as it should be taught, shared, communicated in and through the domestic church of the family. In particular, it is for those commissioned lay ministers who in their ministry work more closely with families: in catechesis, youth ministry, or family outreach. There are three opportunities to attend one of the workshops. The workshops are free and open to the public, but an RSVP would be appreciated. Each workshop will be from 6:30pm-8:30pm: July 28 at Seton Academy, 23 St Charles St, Plattsburgh, NY 12901; July 29 at the Parish of the Visitation Parish Hall, 3 Morris St, Norfolk, NY 13667; and July 30 at the Sisters of St. Joseph Motherhouse, 1425 Washington St, Watertown, NY For more information or to RSVP contact Steve Tartaglia or startaglia@rcdony.org Knights of Columbus - St. Ann s Shrine Pilgrimage On Sunday, July 26 th Knights of Columbus, their families and friends from throughout the Diocese of Ogdensburg will participate in the 67 th annual pilgrimage to St. Anne s Shrine in Isle LaMotte, Vermont. The pilgrimage begins with the celebration of a 12:15 PM Mass by Most Reverend Terry A. LaValley. Following Mass, Bishop LaValley will join the pilgrims for a picnic lunch on the Shrine s beautiful grounds. Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament will take place at about 3:00 PM. All pilgrims are invited to the picnic lunch and if practical asked to bring a dish to share. The Knights of Columbus will provide hot dogs, michigans, hamburgers and beverages. Located on the shores of Lake Champlain, only a few miles from the Rouses Point Bridge, the St. Anne s Shrine s religious history dates to 1666 when the French erected a fort and chapel on the site. The chapel was blessed in 1893 and a beautiful statue of St. Anne, the mother of Mary, was erected. For more information please call Pilgrimage Coordinator Peter Keenan at Mountain Top Mass All Boy and Girl Scouts and their families are invited to the annual Catholic Scouting Hike and Mass at Floodwood Mountain in Tupper Lake, Sunday, August 9 th. Fr. Bryan Stitt the chaplain of Catholic Scouting will celebrate the Mass after the 2.1 mile ascent up the moderate mountain. The hike begins at 10:00 am. 5 Page Five St. André Bessette Parish, Malone, New York July 26, 2015 Sacrament of Baptism Parents who wish to have a child baptized should contact Rev. Joseph Giroux to make arrangements for the date and for a program of preparation. Parents are highly encouraged to make arrangements at least three months before the child is born, as the Catholic Church encourages Baptism for infants as soon as possible after birth. Adults and older children (seven years or older) interested in Baptism or entering into full communion with the Catholic Church should inquire about the program of preparation (R.C.I.A.: the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults). Sacrament of Matrimony A Catholic wishing to be married in one of our churches should contact one of the priests at least six months prior to the desired date in order to begin making arrangements. A program of preparation is required. The parish should be contacted before any other plans are made for example, the wedding reception. Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick For those preparing for surgery, nursing home residents, or the homebound, contact one of the parish priests to make arrangements to be anointed. For those in the hospital (especially in the event of an emergency), ask the hospital staff to contact the priest on call.
