2 PAGE 2 THE BRIDGE MARCH 2015 YOUTH GROWING How to show love to your kids Some parents find it tough to express their emotions to family members. But finding a way to communicate love is vitally important to the health and growth of each family member. Saying I love you is one of the most important gifts you can give to your children. I encourage you to say it often! While expressing your emotions verbally is needed, it is important to realize that there are other ways to communicate your love that are just as important. In Gary Chapman s book, The Five Love Languages, he explains that everyone has emotional tanks. According to Chapman, we help keep others tanks full by using five love languages that he has identified. He says that most of us have a primary love language, although all of them can be important for healthy relationships. If you want to succeed at showing your love to your kids, identify their primary love language(s) and then do your best to communicate using those languages. Here is a brief look at the five ways to express your love to your kids: 1. Words of affirmation. Criticism, if overdone, can create devastating consequences in adult life. Determine to praise your child right for every good thing you see him or her doing. A minimum of two compliments a day is a good goal. 2. Quality time. Get down to your child s level. Discover his or her interests and learn as much about him or her as possible. Be totally present, giving your child undivided attention. Give your child at least a few minutes of quality time. Make it a priority. 3. Receiving gifts. Gifts, if overdone, can become meaningless and teach a child a materialistic set of values. But periodic gifts, thoughtfully chosen and given with affirming statements such as, I love you, so I got a special gift for you, can help meet a child s need for love. 4. Acts of service. The next time you perform an especially meaningful act of service for your child, make sure that you say it means you love him or her. Pick a task that is not especially appealing to you but that is very important to your child. 5. Physical touch. Hugging, kissing, and appropriate touching are very important for a child s emotional tank. Consider the age and temperament of your child and determine a unique approach in this area. When your child gets older, you will need to be sensitive, but you should still maintain a regular habit of touching for affirmation. ~ Jim Burns HELP THE YOUTH GO ON THEIR MISSION TRIPS THIS SUMMER! STORM: HEARING JESUS FOR THE TIMES WE LIVE IN SUNDAYS 6-7:30pm APRIL 12-MAY 17 Library/Room 10 Jim Cymbaia believes that the church in America is in the middle of a powerful storm, the intensity of which is likely to increase in coming months and years. Chris Benson will lead this class. Book cost $15. 5 MARCH 2015 THE BRIDGE PAGE 5 SERVE CARES Infant to mature adult, male and female, multiracial. These are the faces of the clients that avail themselves of the services of CARES and the faces of the guests that CUMC opens our doors to on a nightly basis. I chose to become involved out of a need to serve and a desire to help women and children. Shortly after the family shelter idea was put into action I volunteered to be a hostess. My responsibilities were minimal: open up the doors of the church and turn on the lights for the overnight volunteer and families, orient them to the facilities, be a welcoming face, then lock up and leave at 10pm. The next time God nudges your heart take that step. SERVE. It made me feel good to know that those moms and kids had a safe place to be for the night. But each night I volunteered, I left the church and returned to my home and my bed where sleep often evaded me. What if the circumstances had been different in my life? What if I did not have a safety net of loving family? What if I had made more wrong choices? The experience at CARES has caused me to view life from another perspective and to be less judgmental. The experience has led me to explore the causes of homelessness and poverty. Serving others always leads to personal growth and the desire to do more. The next time God nudges your heart take that step. SERVE. ~ Ann Grove HOMELESS WOMEN AND CHILDREN During the month of March CUMC will be hosting homeless women and children through our partnership with Carlisle CARES. Each night 8-10 families will sleep in the Multi-Purpose Room and call CUMC home. In the fall during worship Pastor Mira tried to drive a PET (personal energy wanna serve but not sure where? We are recruiting the following for the Worship Team as well as people to help with Sound & Media during the Contemporary Service at 9:45am in the MPR. Musicians/Vocalists Ability to play/sing as directed, attend PET NEWS transportation system) into worship that is used for persons with limited mobility in foreign countries. In a partnership with Project SHARE, our Serve team built 30 PETS in 2014 and has many more almost completed. We recently received word that PET International has design changes coming out that will benefit the users. The users who are not using them just for transportation as initially designed but more as daily wheelchairs. With changes in PET, the Project SHARE board believes it best for PET to find a new home that allows the program to continue with all the changes. During this transition, our PET team will help pack up the PET pieces for the move, pray that a new site becomes available, and help paint the new Farmstand this spring. We give thanks for all the dedicated volunteers who support this ministry and pray for its continuation in our community. Please keep these families in your prayers. If you are interested in welcoming the families, assisting kids with homework, and getting everyone settled before bedtime, please contact Kendra Hatch or Pastor Mira. VIM TRIP PRAYERS Please keep our Volunteer In Mission Team in your prayers as they travel to the NYC area March 19-22nd to help in the continued rebuilding efforts. Barb Harpel and Jacquie Bunt are leading the team back to this area for the fourth time as we continue to partner with the New York Annual Conference Recovery Teams. weekly rehearsals when scheduled, have vocal harmony skills and an understanding of blending with other vocalists and musicians. Sound & Media These are trainable areas that simply require computer skills, a good ear and love for music! We can train in both areas. If you are interested in any of these areas and would like more info., contact me, Charlie Lartz at clartz@carlislepaumc.org.

7 MARCH 2015 THE BRIDGE PAGE 7 REACHING OUT NO COMPUTER? NO PROBLEM! Church Member Mary wants to sign up for a class she s heard about, but the details say sign up online. She doesn t have a computer, so finds herself frustrated and feeling left out. Does this sound familiar? Have you heard from others that this can be a problem? We want you to know we have heard you and have taken concrete steps to resolve this issue! Beginning March 1, our Info Central area will include an ipad computer and a friendly Host to assist anyone with signing up online for events, programs and classes. An Info Central Host will be available every Sunday morning from 7:45am-12:15pm, ready to assist with finding info on our website, registering for events/ classes, submitting prayer requests, and answering questions. The ipad is available to all on Sunday mornings to search the CUMC website if you are not able to do so at home, and the Host will be eager to show you how. Info Central is located in the corner of the Gathering to the left of the mailboxes, under the large banner. Please stop by and check out all the brochures and info, and give the ipad a try. As we continue to look for ways to help everyone feel welcome, valued and connected at CUMC, please let me know if you have other ideas that will help. ~ Sue Barnes Welcoming Coordinator The Lebanon Valley College Concert Choir to sing at CUMC in Honor of Dr. and Mrs. Kauffman On Friday, March 20, at 7pm, the children of Rev. Dr. Gerald and Mrs. Eleanor Kauffman Karen, Fred and Kristen will host a free concert in our sanctuary performed by the Lebanon Valley College Concert Choir. Dr. Kauffman served as senior pastor at Grace Church with distinction for an exceptional period of time for a UMC pastor - 32 years. Mrs. Kauffman served as Director of the children and youth choirs for many years as well as in other roles in the church. Eleanor engendered a love of music in all who were in her presence, whether in the classroom or the church. Both were graduates of Lebanon Valley College. Dr. Kauffman served as a member of the Lebanon Valley College Board of Trustees for well over twenty five years and received the Honorary Degree of Doctor of Divinity from LVC in Upon his retirement from the ministry in 1989, he was named Pastor Emeritus at Grace United Methodist Church and the church s chapel was named in his honor. Dr. Kauffman encouraged and supported Rev. Dr. Karen Layman, the Rev. Dr. Dennis Otto, the Rev. Dr. Dennis Keller, and the Rev. Dr. Charles Salisbury in their call to ministry with the United Methodist Church. The Kauffman Ministerial Scholarship Fund was created in Dr. Kauffman s honor and has been used to provide financial support to a number of ministerial sons and daughters of CUMC. The Lebanon Valley College Concert Choir presents high On Tuesday evening, March 24, at 7:00 pm., CUMC will host a panel discussion on Jesus Arrest and Arrests Today in the church sanctuary. Carlisle Borough Police Chief Steve Margeson and Pastor James VanZandt will serve as panelists while Attorney Gary Ankabrandt will be the moderator. This program, held during Lent, will explore the events leading up to Jesus arrest, how it happened and why it was not a surprise to Jesus. The program will also examine how the arrest would have been handled differently today (if at all). The panel discussion is also timely with all of the news about arrests throughout the nation and the misconceptions about quality choral music in its 79th annual spring concert tour. The Concert Choir has toured each year, primarily in the Northeast, since In addition, the choir has been heard on more than 30 NBC national radio broadcasts including National Radio Pulpit and Great Choirs in America. The choir has performed with the Harrisburg Symphony Orchestra and holds a standing invitation to appear at the National Cathedral, Washington, D.C., and the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine, New York City. The choir has toured internationally to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe. There will be an audio-visual tribute to Dr. and Mrs. Kauffman at intermission. Donations received will benefit the Lebanon Valley College Choral Music Program. THE JESUS ARREST AND ARRESTS TODAY EVENING COMMUNITY PROGRAM AT CUMC ~ Gary Ankabrandt police powers. Chief Margeson s information on how arrests are made will educate attendees on the powers, rights and limitations. We hope that this program will remove some fears that individuals may have and reinforce trust in our local police. The public is invited to attend this program. ~ Gary Ankabrandt

8 PAGE 8 THE BRIDGE MARCH 2015 Long before our three churches unified in July 2013, a Site Selection Task Force was hard at work as a segment of the Transition Team that led us in those early days. This group was tasked with identifying and evaluating potential alternative sites on which a new church could be built should our congregation vote to relocate as opposed to staying in our current location. A site rating system was established which looked at factors such as: Location (visibility, relation to highways, approaches to the site from area roads, walking distance, nearness of residential developments, facilitates current mission; zoning; proximity to other UM churches); Physical Characteristics (size & shape of lot; topography, drainage); Infrastructure (availability of utilities; existing driveways; street lighting; sidewalks); Environmental Factors (noise; smoke; odors; pollutants); and Thursday Men s Breakfast group invites you to join us for dinner at Henry and Naomi s Amish Farm in Newburg, Saturday April 11, 2015 at 6pm. The evening includes a delicious meal served family style and an opportunity to learn about Amish religious and family traditions. Henry and Naomi s can accommodate groups FACILITIES UPDATE Financial Considerations. This task force has continued to work in recent months to update its conclusions and look for anything new that might have become available to the market. At least 15 sites have been evaluated, and thanks to Rick Washinger for plotting many of them on the following plan together with locations of existing UM churches in our region: Regional churches plus CUMC are outlined in pink, the top rated sites are shown in yellow, and other sites reviewed and ruled out for one reason or DINNER AT HENRY & NAOMI S of up to 42 people. Look for the sign-up sheet in the gathering at Info Central. Please sign up by April 5. If you have joined us in the past please note that Henry and Naomi have another are depicted in green. The red circle indicates a 3-mile radius from the Square in Carlisle. The top rated alternative sites resulting from many meetings and much analysis are: Carlisle Events (7 acres) located on Spring Road in the Borough of Carlisle, and Smith Farm (23 acres) situated on South Spring Garden Street in South Middleton Township (a small portion is located in the Borough). We now have offers in hand from each of these property owners. The map below provides the location of these two top-rated alternative sites in relationship to the current CUMC facility and the center of Carlisle. moved. They are now located at Paxton Run Rd, Newburg, PA Please plan to arrive at Henry and Naomi s by 5:45pm. Dinner will be served promptly at 6pm. Any questions please contact Rich Charette at , via at rcharette62@comcast.net or leave a message in the church office. ~ Rich Charette We are currently in the Due Diligence phase of our analysis of these two alternative sites together with a detailed evaluation of our existing CUMC facility. This involves discussions with the host municipalities and their engineers, analysis of site development costs, storm water management, site access considerations, zoning constraints and other myriad criteria. With respect to the alternative of remaining permanently at our existing transitional facility, we are assessing options and costs to restore and upgrade this campus, including the possibility of a two-story addition over the remaining parking lot. Next month we ll begin to discuss each of these three permanent location alternatives in more detail. ~ Jeff Barnes CHURCH HALL MEETING HANDOUTS are now available online, org, under Church Hall and at Info Central in the Gathering. 45 South West St. Carlisle, PA :15am - Traditional Worship in the Sanctuary Worship with traditional hymns, a full choir, and traditional UMC liturgy. 9:45am - Contemporary Worship in the MPR Worship led by our Praise Band using contemporary music. 11:00am - Celebration Worship in the Sanctuary Worship includes a variety of traditional hymns, songs from The Faith We Sing, and choruses of praise.
