To the modern ear, Luther s verses sometimes sound awkward. They lack the rich emotional overtones and the mellow flow of words which mark the hymns written in the past century.

LUKE S LUTHERAN CHURCH 4299 S NC HWY 150 LEXINGTON NC MARTIN LUTHER AS HYMN WRITER The sudden bursting forth of the Lutheran chorale is one of the most thrilling chapters in the history of the Reformation. It began in December of Luther expressed his appreciation for some of the older German hymns and his desire to find poets who would write new hymns in a proper devotional style. Before the year was over, several of Luther s hymns and some by his friends were printed and distributed. By late in the summer of the following year, Luther had written twenty-four of the thirty-six hymns that would come from his pen. Martin Luther versified the Psalms, translated and adapted Latin hymns, improved and spiritualized German folk-songs, and wrote original hymns. To the modern ear, Luther s verses sometimes sound awkward. They lack the rich emotional overtones and the mellow flow of words which mark the hymns written in the past century. But Luther s hymns were not meant to create a mood; they were meant to convey a message. They were a confession of faith, not of personal feelings. They were written not to be read, but to be sung by the whole congregation. And Luther s people learned to sing them. Practices were set during the week for the entire congregation; and in the home, after the catechism hour, the family was encouraged to sing. Included on the schedule is a hotdog and hamburger supper for around 5:00 pm. Many fun things are available including the train, carousel, gem mining and mini golf. Please make plans and invite your family and friends. Directions to the park: Take I-85 south to Spencer/East Spencer exit (#79). Turn left then turn right on Choate Road and go to the stop sign. Turn left on McCanless Road and go to the stop sign. Turn left on Bringle Ferry Road. Park will be on your left about 6 miles from Salisbury. Enter the gate, take the first right. Go to shelter # 1 which is on the left. THE WELCA WILL PLAN DEVOTIONS at the Lutheran Home in Salisbury August 2. Everyone is invited to go and be a part of this blessing to the residents. Please make plans and meet at the church Wednesday August 2 at 10:15.

The purpose of this meeting will be to vote on a contract for addressing the water problem occurring at the sides of the sanctuary. The Church Council recommends a bid of $3,036 submitted by Terry Shoaf and is to be voted on by congregation. This meeting will be held Sunday August 6 at the beginning of the 11:00 am worship service. This constitutes official notice of the meeting to all voting members.
