The God of glory appeared to our ancestor Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he lived in Haran, 3 and said to him, Leave your country and your relatives and go to the land that I will show you. 4 Then he left the country of the Chaldeans and settled in Haran. After his father died, God had him move from there to this country in which you are now living Then he gave him the covenant of circumcision. And so Abraham became the father of Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac became the father of Jacob, and Jacob of the twelve patriarchs. 9 The patriarchs, jealous of Joseph, sold him into Egypt; but God was with him, 10 and rescued him from all his afflictions, and enabled him to win favor and to show wisdom when he stood before Pharaoh, king of Egypt, who appointed him ruler over Egypt and over all his household But as the time drew near for the fulfillment of the promise that God had made to Abraham, our people in Egypt increased and multiplied Then the Lord said to him, Take off the sandals from your feet, for the place where you are standing is holy ground. 34 I have surely seen the mistreatment of my people who are in Egypt and have heard their groaning, and I have come down to rescue them. Come now, I will send you to Egypt Our ancestors in turn brought it in with Joshua when they dispossessed the nations that God drove out before our THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY COMES ALIVE 21
ancestors. And it was there until the time of David, 46 who found favor with God and asked that he might find a dwelling place for the house of Jacob. 47 But it was Solomon who built a house for him You are the ones that received the law as ordained by angels, and yet you have not kept it. STEPPING INTO THE WORD Twenty years ago, I spent three weeks on a study tour of Israel. There was a day or two in which the itinerary needed to shift based on reported areas of conflict, but the current situation in Gaza (summer 2014) is much more intense than when I was there. It is extraordinary that in spite of decades of political unrest and bombing in the region, so much in the country is unchanged I m not talking about twenty or thirty or even forty years ago, but hundreds of years ago! Archaeologists have recovered artifacts that tell stories marking the earliest civilizations. The rocks and roads, the walls and bones, the writing on stones and on scrolls all give us a bread-crumb trail that we can trace back to every cultural era represented in Scripture. In 1987, I was able to swim in the Dead Sea, eat fish caught in the Sea of Galilee, sit in a manger in Bethlehem, and walk around the walls of Jerusalem. I felt as if a portal in time had opened up, and I d stepped into a parallel universe where the pages of the Bible came to life. I expected the food, the dress, and the language of the Middle East to feel foreign to me. Yet over and over again I felt as if I were coming home. I was meeting my ancestors and discovering the roots of my family tree. The stories of salvation were no longer limited to words on a page, but the people and places of the Bible were tangible to me. Abraham, Moses, and David were no longer superheroes of a mythical world but my spiritual cousins. I stood where they stood, breathing the air they breathed, seeing the land they called home. I walked where Jesus walked. In ways I d never before imagined I understood the radical claim Jesus made in telling his disciples that he had come as a fulfillment of God s promise. Because of Jesus, God s promises to Israel are our inheritance too. 22
HEARING THE WORD The book of Acts makes a connection between Jesus coming and God s promises to Israel. The book begins with the story of Pentecost and tells how Christ sends the Holy Spirit as his continued presence with them on earth. The experience of receiving the Holy Spirit fueled their zeal for spreading the news that Jesus was God s promised Messiah. However, the disciples message did not go over well with everyone. In the earlier chapters of Acts, the disciples were beaten and imprisoned by the religious authorities for teaching the Way of Christ. In Acts 7, the conflict escalates to the point that Stephen is dragged outside Jerusalem and stoned to death. Before his martyrdom, Stephen offers a defense of the accusations against him. Stephen s speech in Acts 7 develops continuity between God s acts of salvation in the Old Testament with the coming of Jesus and the spread of the gospel in the New Testament. Stephen passionately and concisely describes how the covenant God made to Abraham and Moses and confirmed again through the prophets of Israel has now come to fulfillment in Christ. Stephen s speech results in his death for two reasons. First, it was blasphemy for him to claim Jesus coming as a fulfillment of God s promises to Israel. What really gets the mob fired up is Stephen s accusation that the Jewish people have squandered God s gift. Stephen calls them traitors and murderers. He compares their part in Jesus crucifixion to a centuries-old pattern of rebellion against God s prophets. Stephen s death sparked the beginning of a widespread persecution of Christians in Jerusalem anyone who took the claims of Christ seriously had to flee the city. Amazingly, instead of crushing the spread of the gospel, the diaspora only served to spread Christ s message to people all over Judea and Samaria and into other parts of the world. A CLOSER LOOK: CIRCUMCISION Quite simply, circumcision is the cutting off of the foreskin. Circumcision is first mentioned in the Old Testament in connection to God s covenant with Abraham (Genesis 17). It was a mark of identity for Jewish men. Though circumcision was a tangible sign of belonging to God s covenant people, THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY COMES ALIVE 23
there is indication already in the Old Testament that God is more interested in the heart of a person than in outward appearances. Moses tells the people of Israel that the Lord will circumcise their hearts and the hearts of their descendants (Deuteronomy 30:6). Circumcision of the heart leads one to love the Lord with all one s heart, soul, mind, and strength. Likewise, the Gentiles, in their love for God in Christ, have become inwardly marked as God s people It is not necessary for them to bear the outward sign of the covenant. BRINGING IT HOME Our society places high value on trust, but that trust is not given without being earned. We build trust for one another based on making and keeping promises. We make promises every day: to our parents, to our kids, to the people we work with, and to the people we hang out with. Sometimes promises come in the form of a contract, like the bank that holds our mortgage or the cell-phone network that keeps us connected. Most of our promises, however, are made without signatures or an exchange of documents. Most of us would agree that life runs a lot more happily when we can trust a person s word. Making and keeping promises is not a uniquely Christian value, yet at least one aspect of making and keeping promises is unique to people of faith. As Christians, we trust that God has made promises and can be counted on to keep promises. In fact, our belief in a covenant-making, promise-keeping God forms the crux of what it means to be a Christian. Our fellowship in the body of Christ is built on God s faithfulness to promises that began in God s covenant relationship with Abraham and Sarah and now extend to us because of Christ. Think about some of the promises you have made to your church and the appreciation you have for those who show up where and when they ve committed to be. Though it seems mundane, consistency in showing up for worship, choir practice, committee meetings, or church workdays provides a context in which our connections to one another are strengthened and our trust of one another grows. The daily and weekly activities we do together as a church are our lived response to the faithfulness God extends to us. 24
Another example of making and keeping promises is experienced in the Sacrament of Baptism. Christians are joined to the community of faith in the name of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We not only join in the life, death, and resurrection of Christ, but we are also united to one another. Baptism is not merely for the individual, but the whole congregation enters into a covenant with the one being baptized. We promise to be part of the newly baptized in his or her journey of faithfulness to Christ. QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTION AND DISCUSSION How have you (or might you) connect your own story of faith to the stories of the people you meet through Scripture? In his speech, Stephen gives a summary of God s faithfulness beginning with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob and continuing through to Moses and the prophets. How might you summarize the story of God s faithfulness to your congregation? Who has given shape to the current mission of the church? What were significant events in the life of the congregation, and how did you experience God s faithfulness during those times? What are some of the promises you ve made to your community of faith? If you were to view the simple act of showing up as a spiritual practice, how might it deepen your commitment? THE CHRISTIAN COMMUNITY COMES ALIVE 25
PRAYER God of promise, we give you thanks and praise for your faithfulness to Abraham and Sarah and for including us in your great plan of salvation. Give us strength, love, and patience so that we might make and keep our promises to one another even as you have made and kept your promises to us. In the name of Jesus, the child of your promise, we offer our prayers to you. Amen. A LOOK AHEAD People gather in small and large crowds and listen to inspiring speakers. What gives speakers such power? Peter claims such spiritual power is given when one s heart is right before God. Background Scripture for Next Time Acts 8:
