3 Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan Page 3 Things Above from Fr. Bilot Saturday is All Hallow s Eve. Like many aspects of our culture, All Hallow s Eve, once a holy event to acknowledge the glory of those who died and were now with the Lord, has turned secular with Halloween being a day of dressing up in anything but a saintly costume and going out begging for candy. Can you imagine if we went out door-to-door begging for people to come back to church or to turn their lives over more completely to the Lord? Yikes, that might be a scary thought! Even more, All Hallow s Eve was a day of preparation for the great solemnity of All Saints; a holy day begun to honor all the saints, known and unknown. From the first centuries after Christ, Christians who died a martyr s death were considered saints, who live in God s presence forever. Every year, on the anniversary of the martyrs deaths, Christians would visit their tombs and celebrate the Eucharist. This practice grew throughout the centuries to include remembering other outstanding Christians on the days they died. Soon, the entire calendar was filled with memorials of the saints. In the ninth century, Pope Gregory IV designated November 1 as the day to remember all the saints living in God s presence. (Loyola Press) This year, November 1 falls on a Sunday, so the Church celebrates All Saints Day and not the 31st Sunday in Ordinary time. As you may have read in the Infant, we have many saints' relics in our adoration chapel. On Saturday, October 31 and through the Masses on Sunday, November 1, we will be displaying the relics in the sanctuary of the church. So, before or after Mass, please take a moment to come forward and venerate the saints who have lived their lives for God. (I hope to have someone available to help answer questions, too.) The reliquaries hold the remains, those purported or actual physical remains of saints, such as bones, pieces of clothing, or some object associated with saints. The authenticity of any given relic is often a matter of debate; for that reason, some churches require documentation of the relic's provenance. (See Fr. John s article from last week you may access the article through the parish website.) In our safe, we have the official documentation of the relics in our possession. The majority of our relics were acquired through the efforts of Msgr. Weier (our founding pastor). I am told he had a great devotion to the saints and desired to bring this blessed devotion to the parish. I am most grateful for his foresight and love for those Catholic Christian men and women who gave their lives for the Lord. I am excited to have this opportunity available to us. I am also very grateful to Frank Korak who, over the years, has taken care of our relics. Frank and his cousin, Bob Jennings, have built the stands to display the relics in church for All Saints' Day. It is always pleasing to know that there is someone who does a quiet job for the parish yet has a big impact on our devotion and worship. If you see something that you think needs to be done, don t hesitate to ask if it is something that you can help with! On Halloween, Fr. John and I will pass out candy at the Rectory door located on Herbert Weier Dr. (Hollander), NOT the rectory office entrance. In addition to giving out candy, we will also pass out prayer cards. I instituted the practice of giving out prayer cards with the candy several years ago to help restore the significance to this holy eve and to bring the Good News of Jesus to the world (in other words, evangelization). Please remember that on Monday at 7 p.m., Fr. Tom Urban, our priest in residence and a Canon lawyer, will be speaking on Catholic marriage, divorce and annulments. If you or anyone you know has questions, concerns or needs insight into any of these topics, please attend. Even, if you don t have concerns, attend so that you may be informed. There are many misconceptions, and the more people that understand the facts, the more effective our evangelization efforts will be! On final note, please mark your calendars now for a Holy Hour on Friday, November 20, 2015 at 7 p.m. We will pray for persecuted Christians throughout the world, especially in the Middle East. We will also have an organization here that sells olive woods religious articles that help support the Catholic Christians in the Holy Land. More details to follow. Have a blessed week, Fr. Jim Bilot Priesthood Sunday Mass of Remembrance Monday November 2 at 7:00 pm The Church of the Divine Child will celebrate a special Mass of Remembrance for those who died and were buried from Divine Child between September 28, 2014 and October 10, The names of each of the deceased will be sung during the Liturgy, and will be remembered with the lighting of candles at this special Mass. Family members will be receiving a personal invitation, however, all are welcome to attend.

4 Page 4 Fr. John Kopson s Commentary Church of the Divine Child, Dearborn, Michigan Priesthood Sunday Are you a single man? Do you want to save lives? Do you want to heal people? Do you want to comfort and encourage people? Do you want to give yourself completely to God? Do you want to follow Jesus Christ wholly and unreservedly? Do you want to win people over to the Lord? And I ask you again, do you want to save lives?!? If you answered yes to one of these questions, then you just might have a calling to the priesthood. After almost a year and a half of being ordained a priest, I can honestly tell you that being a priest is absolutely awesome!!! I absolutely love my calling/vocation/ job! Today (Sunday), during my homily, I will give my vocation story (which is the story of how I became a priest). If you weren t at that Mass and still want to hear the story, go to our website next week (after Tuesday) and you will find the podcast (audio recording) of that homily ( churchofthedivinechild.org/). Before I became a priest, I took a long time to discern (which means to figure out ) if I wanted to be a priest and if Jesus was calling me to be a priest. Trust me, I did not come to a decision regarding this overnight! During this time of my life, I knew deep down that I wanted to help people. I just didn t know how I was supposed to help people. Throughout the course of roughly nine years, I came to the realization that I did want to be a priest and that Jesus was indeed calling me to be a priest. I am so happy that I became a priest and I praise Jesus for calling me to this unbelievable vocation! Please pray that other men will take some time to figure out if Jesus is calling them to be priests. We must get the message out there that to be a priest means to live a happy life. This life isn t always easy, but it is very fulfilling! It is very well worth it! It brings joy to one s life and heart! We need more priests! Jesus said, The harvest is abundant but the laborers are few; so ask the master of the harvest to send out laborers for his harvest (Matthew 9: 37-38). The harvest is certainly abundant and we need more priests to work in it! I am blessed every day to be able to labor in this harvest! It s an awesome life! Please pray for me, please pray for all priests, and please pray for future priests! If you know anyone who has questions about the priesthood or how to figure out if God is calling them to the priesthood, then please contact me. You can call or me your questions anytime. God Bless You, Fr. John jkopson@divinechild.org Fr. John s Traveling Chalice What is this? The Traveling Chalice is a way to involve parish households to pray for vocations. How does it work? The Traveling Chalice is located in the Vestry. Any DC family can sign it out, take it home for a week and put it in a place of honor. Each day the household will pray for an increase in vocations to the priesthood and religious life. There are suggested prayers that will be provided. The family may also spend some time talking about the need for vocations, ways to support our religious and ways to encourage young people to consider consecrated life. Questions? Please call Fr. John Kopson or the Rectory Office for details at

Enrollment Applicaons for For more informaon regarding our high school or our admission quesons should contact Ma Saxer, A Prayer for Our Priests Gracious and loving God, we thank you for the gift of all priests, and in a special way, we are grateful for Fr. Bilot, Fr. Kopson and Fr. Urban. Through them, we experience your presence in the sacraments. Help our priests to be strong in their vocation. Set their souls on fire with love for your people. Grant them the wisdom, understanding, and strength they need to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Inspire them with the vision of your Kingdom. Give them the words they need to spread the Gospel. Allow them to become instruments of your Divine Grace. We ask this through Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns as our Eternal Priest. Amen. If someone approached you with an invitation to join the Divine Child Choir would you be inclined to say: I can t sing. Do you sing the hymns at Mass? I m not good enough. We are not looking for soloists! Just voices that blend in with everyone else. I can t read music. Neither do many of our current members. I can t sing in Latin. That s why we have rehearsals. I ve never sung in a choir before. It s never too late. I don t have the time. Once you get hooked, you might just make the time. Purpose. The choir is a service organization that strives to bring a level of musical performance to the liturgy in a manner that is more developed that what a singing congregation is able to do. Qualifications. The ability to read music is a benefit, but not a requirement. Also, a good solo voice is wonderful, but very few choir members are soloists. Instead, choir membership calls for a voice that blends well with others. If you are comfortable singing the hymns during parish Masses, you are probably an excellent candidate for the choir. Membership. Open to anyone of high school age and up. Still not sure? Someone says, I don t think I m good enough. Most of the time that is wrong. If you have any concerns about your own singing ability, a brief one-onone with me will thoroughly satisfy your concerns. Prayer. Please keep all our Divine Child Parish ministries in your prayers! Ask God to bring us willing and capable stewards with a commitment to serving our community Schedule Rehearsals: Every Thursday from now until May 26, 7-9pm Exceptions: Rehearsals for Christmas / Easter will be held on the Tuesday prior. The choir has a break on Thanksgiving and the week following Christmas / Easter. Holy Mass: 9:30 Mass (meeting in the gathering space at 9am) every Sunday from now until May 29 (Corpus Christi) plus Christmas, Holy Thursday, and Good Friday. Interested? Even a little bit?? Contact our membership coordinators. They can answer any questions you might have. Then you decide. Priesthood Sunday is special day set aside to honor the priesthood in the United States. It is a day to reflect upon and affirm the role of the priesthood in the life of the Church as a central one. It was designed to be an event led by the laity, but your parish priest can participate by talking about how he experienced and answered his own calling, the need for vocations to keep the priesthood vital, and about priests who have inspired him. Priesthood Sunday will also offer an opportunity for priests and their parishioners to build a stronger working relationship for the future. Together, they can dialogue to take an honest look at the challenges of the future and how they can collaborate to meet those challenges as a united force. Visit our website for more information on how you can be involved in strengthening the future of our Church in the AOD and our resource page for ideas on ways to promote vocations: Follow us on Facebook: Detroit Priest and All Souls Day Mass - Monday, November 2, 2015 Your family of faithful servants at Catholic Funeral & Cemetery Services looks forward to commemorating the lives of those called back into the loving arms of Our Holy Father. Your gifts to the Catholic Services Appeal allow the Department of Development and Stewardship to guide parishes in the Archdiocese of Detroit, and their parishioners, on their stewardship journey. Each year, the department provides Stewardship Thoughts on the current cycle of readings for parishes to publish in their bulletins. Graphics of these Stewardship Thoughts are now also available every Friday morning on the CSA Facebook page, at and the CSA Twitter Social media is a valuable tool of evangelization. All are welcome and encouraged to share and Retweet Stewardship Thoughts, and to bring the Scriptures to their connections on the World Wide Web.
