Page 2 The P ulpit Volume 2, Iss ue 3 Ministries Jubilee With Jubilee 2014 quickly approaching, we gratefully recall last year s Jubilee and all that the Lord did for us, especially Friday night. That service forever etched its memory in the hearts and lives of all that were in attendance. Soon we will be scheduling work days to prepare the facilities for so many visitors. Ladies have already been accepting hotel room reservations for guests from Arizona to Georgia to Pennsylvania and several states in between. Most importantly, we have been fasting and praying to prepare our hearts spiritually for the services and to pray for those who will be visiting us. While we anticipate the services this year, let us take a moment to reflect on Jubilees in the past. Many members do not realize that we had Jubilee years ago in the old church building in Hardinsburg. Our first Jubilee was around Jamie Calloway recalls all of the work that went into the remodeling of the church before Jubilee. Ernie and TJ Dean were the only young men in the church at the time, therefore many young ladies worked tirelessly night and day to help with the construction, while the men helped on the weekends when they were off work. During that first Jubilee, when Preacher asked some of the ladies to sing, he told the congregation that they didn t get their tans by lying in tanning beds but that they had been working all summer long on this building! That was the first and last Jubilee with TJ Dean. He passed away the next week doing what he loved to do mostbeing a part of the work of the Lord. Mrs. Ann Voyles fondly remembers cooking for hundreds of people with one gas stove and one electric stove. We had a very small kitchen at the time - not the spacious kitchen we enjoy today with all of our commercial equipment! While we definitely should pray for the spiritual atmosphere of the services, Mrs. Ann used to pray for no flipped breakers, borrowed crock pots that were actually in working conditions, that the ladies who baked the turkeys wouldn t overcook them, and that they would actually have them de-boned and on a platter ready to serve! Instead of eating in a climate-controlled gym, we set the tent up outside of the old church building to have a place to eat. After several Jubilees in the old building, we skipped a few years. We started having Jubilee again in our new facility in This coming Jubilee will be the 13 th year that we ve had Bro. Pace with us. While it is a blessing to recall Jubilee s of the past and to reflect on what the Lord has done, we must continue pressing forward. We cannot live on yesterday s blessings or grace. We need the Lord to meet with us and prepare us for this coming Jubilee. Without His touch and presence, all of the work and preparation will be in vain.

Volume 2, Iss ue 3 The P ulpit Tent Meetings Pleasant View Baptist Church has been hosting tent meetings for approximately 20 years. We held our first tent meeting in 1994 as a result of a burden the Preacher had for reaching sinners with the Gospel in the Breckinridge County area. Around 1997, the church started hosting tent meetings annually. Evangelist David Wells had recently announced his call to evangelism, and Bro. Ball had given him green and white tent to preach in. For a number of years, Bro. Wells would coordinate the meetings and be the only preacher preaching under the tent. After being called to preach, Bro. Josh Calloway began planning and preaching in many of the tent meetings as well. Since then, other preachers from our church have begun preaching under the tent such as Preacher and Bro. Keith Voyles. We have had some memorable tent meetings over the years. For several years, we hosted the meeting in a pavilion in Clover Port. Numerous people boating on the Ohio River could hear the Gospel being preached. At the Big Springs tent meeting, Bro. Herb Naegele's mother was saved. Around five years ago, we started the Spanish meeting in Hardinsburg. We hosted an English service followed by a service for the Hispanics. The music was conducted by Bro. Doug Raynes who also delivered the English messages. Bro. Garrett and Bro. Holman would then bring the Spanish sermon for the Hispanics. Over the years the Lord has Page 3 touched many peoples' lives through this ministry. Members of our church have been saved through the tent meetings. There have been others from the community that have made professions of salvation and claimed to have enjoyed the services. Tent meetings are scheduled during the summer months from June to August. We anticipate the Lord working in the community during the upcoming season Dominican Republic Recently, Jeremiah Calloway and Travis Massengale traveled with Bro. Terry Norris and several other men from Mayfield Baptist Church to the Dominican Republic to build a music school for missionary Darren Truell. They left out of Nashville Thursday, February 15th and flew south across the Atlantic Ocean to the town of Santa Domingo. Then they drove five hours up into the mountains to Polo, where they would spend the next week constructing the building. Church services were a little different that Sunday. Rather than meeting with 250 people in a heated building promptly at 10 A.M.. to have Sunday School followed by the morning service, they went into the village at noon to gather people to attend the church service. Before bringing the children into the sanctuary, the missionaries provided them with clothing. Bro. Jeremiah accounts the service being filled with worship from the native people, singing praises to the Lord in their language and lifting their hands toward Heaven. They arrived back in the states Saturday, February 22nd. Bro. Jeremiah and Bro. Travis both testify that the trip had a lasting impact on their lives and was truly a blessing in disguise.

Page 4 The P ulpit Volume 2, Iss ue 3 Bryant Dunn I started dating my wife in high school. She said she would not go out with me unless I went to church with her. So, that is what I did. My hair was down to my shoulders. After a few weeks, I cut my hair. I felt I needed to fit in with the crowd. No more drinking, no more drugs, no more hanging out with the wrong crowd. Outwardly, I was doing everything right, but on the inside I was still the same. I would still slip around and do the wrong things. Our preacher, Bro.Balls, started preaching on "People We Think Are Going to Heaven, But They Are Not." Over and over, he just would not get off the subject. I argued with myself. He was preaching right at me! Surely, he wasn't talking about me! I was doing everything right. I had even surrendered to preach, but still the Holy Spirit was telling me, "The preacher's talking to you." Finally, I felt that if I didn't get saved that night, God was done with me. I went and grabbed my youth director s arm and told him I needed to get saved! I went to the altar and asked the Lord to save me. I'm thankful that He had mercy on me and gave me the peace I needed! About five years later, the Lord dealt with me about preaching. Again, I tried to say I was doing everything I was suppose to do. I was the Children's Church teacher, worked on a bus route, and witnessed to everyone I met, yet the Lord still wanted my all. So I surrendered my all to Him and went to college and got my Bachelors of Science degree in Theology. I know I'm still not worthy of His calling, but I know I'm trying to do his will. Member Memoirs Anna Ogburn Roger and I both were born and raised in Kentucky. After we were married, we moved around for awhile and ended up in a small, Southern Ohio town. In the spring of 1993, a cute little boy knocked on my door and invited us to church. Roger and I visited that church off and on for about a year. Then, in April of 1994, a young lady by the name of Gina came by our house during visitation. She took the Bible and showed me how to be saved. After she left, I read the verses again. There were so many religions saying different things that I was confused. I didn't know who was right. The only thing I could rely on were the words Gina had shown me in the Bible. Although I was lost, I always thanked the Lord for my children. I knew they were a gift from God. That night, I went to John and Jake s room, tucked them in, and thanked the Lord for them. Then, I went to Bethany s room and knelt beside her bed, still thinking about what Gina had told me just a few hours before. I didn t know all that was involved in Salvation, but I knew I wanted to be a Christian. I told the Lord that if He would show me the right way, I would do my best to live for Him. I asked the Lord to save me. The night was clear with a full moon. I ll never forget it! Many things have transpired since that night. We moved to Kentucky a few years later, and the Lord eventually led us to Pleasant View. Our family has known, first hand, the grace and mercy of God. I m grateful for the guidance of our preacher and for the support of our church family. As Bro. Wells has often said, I have often been a sorry Christian, but I ve NEVER been sorry that I am a Christian. From as early as I can remember, my family has been members of an independent Baptist church. Allison Thren The earliest church memories I have are at Sugar Grove Baptist Church. We attended there until I was about eight years old. My parents both felt that God wanted us to visit the Pleasant View Baptist Church. Being very spiritually minded, when I heard that we were going to attend there permanently, I was very upset because I didn t like their hard pews! At a revival with Bro. Johnny Jones when I was ten, the Lord began dealing with me. I made a profession of faith but did not fully understand all that this entailed. I went on for nine years thinking I was saved but knowing in my heart that I was not. I did not pay these feelings any mind, thinking that I was just doubting. Around the beginning of March 2013, I really began to have these troubling feelings more often. I did not tell anyone at all that I wasn t sure of my salvation, again trying to convince myself it was just doubt. On Friday night of Jubilee, March 29, as people began going forward to get saved, I was extremely uncomfortable and tried to ignore all that was going on. Someone stood up and testified about the Holy Ghost dealing with them and proving to them, without a doubt, that they were lost. It was as if God was speaking directly to me, telling me that I was not saved. I tried to brush it aside, but I could not escape the pressure of conviction. I finally went forward. When Daddy came forward and asked me what was wrong, I said, I need to get saved. The relief I had when I stood up after asking God to forgive me was the best thing I have ever felt. Knowing that my sin was gone and that I did not have to carry the burden anymore was incredible. I get to experience this freedom every day when I wake up, and I would not trade it for anything on earth.

Volume 2, Iss ue 3 The P ulpit Billy Carter and Family in Montana Missionaries Many individuals have the mindset that evangelizing in the United States must be undemanding and rather easy. After all, it s the land of the free and home of the brave! This has not been the case for Bro. Billy Carter and his family, who have been faithfully serving the Lord in Montana for the past ten years. It has taken them years to build the community s trust and to help them realize the Carters are there permanently and not just a passing cult. The entire family is involved in various aspects of the ministry- singing, teaching, cleaning, preaching- well, Bro. Carter does that part! Each month, they rent the community gym to play ball with the young people, feed them, and share the Gospel with them. They also have a men s night to reach out to the men in the community. If anyone wants a Bible study in their home, the Carters are more than willing to accommodate. They also do summer family camps. The Carters have recently started what they call Operation Saturation in which they try to get a Bible into the hands of as many people as possible. The Carter family appreciates the prayer and support from our church. They request they we pray for their health. Each family member has had some health issues of some sort lately. Page 5 They also request special prayer for the faithfulness of the people they serve. The Carters are in need of good Gospelpreaching and signing CDs as well as Bibles to gives to new converts. Remember to keep this family in your prayers as they serve the Lord in the field of their calling. If you can help with any of the needs mentioned, please do so as soon as possible. Phyl Hyland and Family in Australia The continent we associate with kangaroos, opera, deserts, and cowboy hats is what we often refer to as the Outback. Australia is Earth s smallest continent and populated by approximately 22 million people. Phil Hyland and his family have been serving as missionaries in Australia for the past four years. Currently, the Hylands are between works and on furlough. When they return to Australia, they ll be stationing themselves along Sunshine Coast, working their way into more rural areas. This vicinity has a population of 350,000 people with only one Independent Baptist Church. Many religions are represented in Australia: Roman Catholicism, Buddhism, Anglicanism, and other main stream religions. Sadly, a great percentage of Australians claim to have no religion. While in Australia, the Hylands have thrust the Gospel through tract distribution and evangelistic meetings. Bro. Hyland reports that the native people are not receptive to the Gospel message in general and are very hard to reach. During the time he and his family have been serving, they have seen one person saved. She is pictured to the right. Bro. Hyland and his wife, LeAnn, have two girls, Kaylee, age 11, and Mackenzie, age 8. They are sent out of Calvary Baptist Church in Kingston, Tennessee. For the past year, Bro. Hyland has been working to attain citizenship in Australia. He requests that we pray with him that this process be completed before returning to their mission field, but most importantly, please pray that the Lord would tender the hearts of the Australian people to receive the Gospel.

Page 6 The P ulpit Volume 2, Iss ue 3 Sunday School Synopsis I was reading the other day of how the Lord was instructing Moses to build the Ark of the Covenant and the altar for the children of Israel to bring sacrifices for atonement. As He finished instructing Moses, He said in Exodus 25:22, "And there I will meet with thee, and commune with thee from above the mercy seat, from between the two cherubims which are upon the ark of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the children of Israel." I began to think about the process that they had to go through to receive mercy of the Lord and how they could only bring their sacrifice once a year. It blesses me to know that we no longer have to bring an actual lamb for sacrifice to be able to receive the mercy that God provides, but all we have to do is kneel down wherever we are and ask for forgiveness, and we can have forgiveness. Just like the Lord said He would meet with them there at the altar, He will meet with us as well. He has met with me in the Tabernacle. We can come to His house and there He will meet with us. He has Denver, Colorado met with me in the Truck as I go down the road and begin to think about Him, or begin to think of what Heaven will be like. Preacher has talked about how He has met with him in the Tree when he is out hunting. It doesn't matter where you are, He will meet with you. You could be going through times of Trouble, Trials, or Triumph and He will meet with you and commune with you. I hope this helped you as much as it did me. May the Lord Bless. Chance Thigpen This year, the annual PVBS Bible Quizzing trip to Denver, Colorado was combined with the PVBS 2014 Senior Trip. Students left Thursday, February 13th for a weekend of competition at the Colorado Invitational Quiz where they placed tenth. Throughout the following week, students went site-seeing at Pike s Peak, Garden of the Gods, and Rocky Mountain National Park. On Tuesday, they enjoyed skiing, snow mobiling, snow boarding, tubing, and hiking at Copper Mountain Ski Resort. The Bible Quzzers left Denver on Thursday while the seniors savored one more day of fun before heading home. The ladies got their nails done and went to see Cinderella at a ballet in Denver. The guys went to Ski Cooper for more skiing and snow boarding. As the pictures below testify, the students had a wonderful trip. Their thanks goes to all those who made the trip possible.

Volume 2, Iss ue 3 The P ulpit State Competition Page 7 On Thursday, March 13th and Friday, March 14th, the Lord definitely rewarded all the hard work and preparation that goes into state competition every year. PVBS students in grades 4-12 competed in various categories of State Competition at Northside Christian School, a ministry of Shawnee Baptist Church in Louisville, Kentucky. Students competed against young people all over the state in Bible Quizzing, singing, academic testing, spelling bees, public speaking, writing, photography, word working, and much more. Their efforts were certainly not in vain. The lists below show the results. Our school place first in 39 categories, second place in 27 categories, and third place in 26 categories! What an achievement! The high schoolers who placed first will go on to Nationals April 7th through April 10th. We wish them the best and are truly proud of each students hard work and success. 8 A Word From our Pastor: BIBLICAL REPENTANCE The subject of REPENTANCE is a very misunderstood and miscommunicated doctrine of the Bible. It has been made a very controversial subject among so called Bible believing preachers of this generation. Any time a doctrine from the Word of God is brought up for debate, the debate revolves around the natural mind and members of man trying to skirt the responsibility that we each have to the principles of TRUTH. I teach my college level Hermeneutics class this simple principle. If the plain sense makes common sense seek no other sense This approach will unravel almost all of interpretation problems we face. Repentance deals with SIN. Without understanding that truth and accepting it, repentance will never be understood. Here is a skeletal outline that I feel will be helpful in understanding the principle and process of real Bible repentance. 1. The Condition of the Sinner Romans 3:23 (AV): For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God; 2. The Commandments of the Scripture Romans 7:7 (AV): What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet. Galatians 3:24 (AV) Wherefore the law was our schoolmaster to bring us unto Christ, that we might be justified by faith. 3. The Consciousness of the Soul James 1:21 (AV): Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted word, which is able to save your souls. 1 Peter 1:22 (AV): Seeing ye have purified your souls in obeying the truth through the Spirit unto unfeigned love of the brethren, see that ye love one another with a pure heart fervently: 4. The Conviction of the Spirit John 16:8 11 (AV) 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. 5. The Choice of the Sinner 2 Corinthians 7:10 11 (AV) 10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death. 11 For behold this selfsame thing, that ye sorrowed after a godly sort, what carefulness it wrought in you, yea, what clearing of yourselves, yea, what indignation, yea, what fear, yea, what vehement desire, yea, what zeal, yea, what revenge! In all things ye have approved yourselves to be clear in this matter. 6. The Change of Senses (mind) Psalm 119:59 (AV): I thought on my ways, and turned my feet unto thy testimonies. 7. The Creation of the Savior 2 Corinthians 5:17 (AV): Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new. Romans 8:29 (AV): For whom he did foreknow, he also did predestinate to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brethren. Repentance is a direct change of mind brought on by the awareness of sin in your life and the fact that your sins have violated the laws of God. This changing of the mind is produced by an inward sorrow, remorse and regret over sins committed which results in a redirected and changed life in Christ.
