Expertise in this discipline assists the student in understanding the unique theological emphases of all parts of the biblical canon and the development of theology through the progress of revelation. The course focuses on how the Old and New Testaments are related as a unified story of salvation history. III. PREREQUISITES There are no prerequisites for this course. IV. Explain the distinctive theological emphases of the various parts of the biblical canon C. Trace the development of key theological motifs from the Old Testament through the New Testament. D. Construct a biblical theology of an individual book of the Bible. E. Evaluate different approaches to biblical theology reflected in the major works from this field F. Apply the methodologies of biblical theology to the study of biblical books, key theological issues, and issues related to practical ministry in the Christian church. VII. COURSE REQUIREMENTS AND ASSIGNMENTS A. Reading: The student is required to read each of the three course textbooks. Supports Learning Objectives A, B, C, and E. B. Exams: There will be a take-home, open book exam at the end of the course. The exam will consist of open-book essays that are based on the class lectures and the assigned textbooks. Part of the exam grade will be based on the percentage of reading completed for each of the required textbooks. Supports Learning Objectives A, B, C, E, and F. C. Research Papers: The student is to write two research papers for the class. The first paper (14-16 pages the body of the paper) will develop a biblical theology of an assigned Old Testament book. The second paper (14-16 pages the body of the paper) will develop a biblical theology of an assigned New Testament book. First paper: OT Theology Paper. The student will write a page (this page length is for the body of the paper and does not include title pages, bibliography, etc.) biblical theology of one of the following OT books (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Deuteronomy, Judges, 1-2 Samuel, 1-2 Kings, 1-2 Chronicles, Job, Proverbs, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, Daniel, or Zechariah). The paper will provide a detailed explanation of the theological message of the book. The student should begin the project by reading through the biblical book 2-3 times and determining the major theological themes in the book. The thesis of your paper will be a one-sentence summary of the theological message of the book, and the paper will develop and explain how the key theological themes contribute to this overall message. In studying the theology of the book, the student should seek to find out what the book says about God, about man, and about Israel as a starting point. The paper should provide a brief introduction, body (with the major themes of the book providing for the key headings), and a conclusion. The paper should be written as a formal term paper and conform to Turabian standards. The paper should include a bibliography with at least 12 sources (appropriate for graduate-level) that have been used in the writing of the paper. In our early class sessions, the professor will explain and Page 2 of 19
