Focused on creative arts, leadership development, and economic empowerment, The Dream Center offers over twenty-five completely free programs to the Harlem community for all ages, races, and backgrounds. With a desire to deeply engage the issues of the community, in December of 2016 Pastor Mike opened the H.O.P.E. (Healing On Purpose and Evolving) Center; the first faith-based mental health facility in Harlem. The H.O.P.E. Center is a manifestation of Pastor Mike s vision to effectively support the vast mental health needs of the community. The center seeks to minimize the stigma that exists in many communities of color when seeking mental health services. Pastor Mike is a graduate of Morehouse College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. 4 Rev. Dr. Howard-John Wesley Pastor, Alfred Street Baptist Church Alexandria, Virginia GROWTH AND EXPANSION Over the years, membership continued to grow which necessitated expansion. In 1961, under Reverend Jones, an intensive expansion fund program was undertaken. On Sunday, August 26, 1967, ground was broken for a new church edifice. On Sunday, June 2, 1968, the membership entered a new sanctuary, which was located next to the old one. In 1965, through the efforts of Reverend Jones, the Church was incorporated. Howard-John Wesley, a biblical scholar and arguably one of the greatest orators of our generation, is the gifted, anointed, and dynamic pastor of the historic Alfred Street Baptist Church (ASBC) in Alexandria, Virginia. A courageous, exciting, and visionary leader, Dr. Wesley is a much sought after preacher, teacher, and featured national keynote speaker for various churches, leadership and development programs. He is only the eighth pastor to be installed in the 213-year history of the historic and world-renowned Alfred Street Baptist Church. Alfred Street Baptist Church is the oldest, largest and most prominent African American church in Northern Virginia. Under Dr. Wesley s leadership, the church has grown to over 7,000 members with nearly 80 active ministries. As a result, Alfred Street Baptist Church is the first and only faith-based organization to date, to donate $1 million to the Smithsonian s National Museum of African American History and Culture (NMAAHC). He is most passionate about today s youth, and is often recognized for his sermons which promote spiritual, social and intellectual growth amongst young adults. Reverend Dr. Howard-John Wesley represents the fourth generation of Baptist preachers in his family. He is the son of the late Rev. Dr. Alvin J. Wesley and Dr. Helene J. Wesley. A 1994 magna cum laude graduate of Duke University; he doubled majored in Biomedical and Electrical Engineering. After his first year in medical school, he yielded to God s call once again and walked away from a medical career to attend seminary in preparation for serving God s people. He attended the Boston University School of Theology where he was a Martin L. King, Jr. Scholar and a 1997 summa cum laude graduate concentrating on Biblical Studies and African-American religious history. His passion for preaching and learning led him to the Associated Chicago Theological School s Doctor of Ministry in Preaching Program where he graduated from the Northern Baptist Theological Seminary with his Doctor of Ministry degree in For his labor, Dr. Wesley has received numerous awards and accolades including the recent 2016 NAACP Chairman s Image Award, which celebrates the accomplishments of people of color in the fields of television, music, literature and film and also honors individuals or groups who promote social justice through creative endeavors. Dr. Wesley was inducted into the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Board of Preachers of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia in He was one of seven to receive the 2014 James Floyd Jenkins Pillar of Faith Award presented by Howard University School of Divinity, in collaboration with the United Church of Christ. Additionally, he was one of the 2013 recipients of The Root 100: A Who s Who of Black America Award. Dr. Wesley is associated with several organizations including but not limited to: Alexandria NAACP, the Northern Virginia Urban League, the Community Coalition for Haiti, a member of the Board of Directors for the Hopkins House and the Institute for Responsible Citizenship, a member of the Board for the Lott Carey Convention, and a member of the Board of the John Leland Center for Theological Studies. He has also served as honorary chairperson for the African American Adoptions, Inc. just to name a few. Dr. Wesley has also hosted the weekly Sunday, Life App Moment with Pastor Wesley which aired on DCW50/CW Network. The weekly Life App Moment provides practical life applications, leaving one empowered and able to cope with the stresses of everyday living while creating and encouraging a relationship with God. He is often a guest on various MSNBC talk shows discussing relevant social justice issues plaguing society. A member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., Dr. Wesley is an avid golfer who also enjoys movies, reading, and working out. He is the proud father of two beautiful sons, Howard-John, II and Cooper Reece. As the church continued to grow, a new building project was needed. Because the expansion was so vast, it was completed in phases. In 1984, the old sanctuary was demolished to make room for the new educational wing. In 1985, the educational wing was completed and plans were underway to begin Phase II that included a larger sanctuary. The educational wing, which was enlarged and modified, was named the Jones Educational Wing in honor of Reverend Richard Jones. In November 1994, the congregation marched into a new 1500 seat capacity Sanctuary. MULTI-PURPOSE FACILITY EXPANSION On June 7, 2008 Tabernacle Baptist Church officially dedicated their new state of the art 25,000 square foot multi-purpose building, UNITY Hall, connected to the church on Second and James Streets. Included in this edifice are a full sized gymnasium; a performance stage, with dressing rooms; an aerobics room with showers and lockers; and a cafeteria with full kitchen/banquet facility with seating for 300+.

5 PERIOD OF STRUGGLE As the church increased spiritually, financially and numerically, a larger place of worship was needed. The members decided to build, choosing a site on East Second Street, which at the time was on the outskirts of town. In 1924, the building project was started. In less than a year, the members triumphantly marched from Grange Hall on Stacy Street into the almost completed structure on East Second Street, the same site we occupy today. Disaster visited this fledgling church in 1938 when Tabernacle was virtually destroyed by fire. The task of rebuilding was undertaken while services were held temporarily in the basement of the Allen School on Wall Street. In the ensuing years, the wheels of progress changed the design of the City of Burlington. The improvements and redevelopment plans by the "city" left the church situated in the "heart of the City." In June 1957, the church and other areas on East Second Street were flooded. They were unable to utilize the church. Funerals and other services had to be held at another location. PASTORIUM Under the able leadership of the late Reverend Wesley L. Gregory, the first pastor, who served faithfully for thirteen years, ( ), Tabernacle Baptist Church soon became one of the leading sanctuaries in the City of Burlington for people from all walks of life. It is for Reverend Gregory that the fellowship hall has been named. After Reverend Gregory was called to a church in Jamaica, New York, the church was served by Reverend J. J. Young and Reverend W. H. Holman, who served one year each. The Reverend J. H. Stafford and Reverend V. L. Millines, both served five years, respectively. Then a licentiate of Tabernacle, Reverend Pompey H. Houston, was selected from the membership to be ordained and served as pastor of this flock for thirteen years. In 1961, Reverend Richard W. Jones was called to be the pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church. He came with his wife, Ethel B. Jones, to settle in Burlington from Cape May, New Jersey. They were blessed with two daughters, Leslie and Jennifer. Rev. Jones served for 49 years until his death in June Deacon Robert Preston, Chairman of the Deacon Board, led the church from June 2010 to 2011 with a steady hand. During this time, a search committee was established to find a new pastor. On January 1, 2012, Deacon Willie Reid was installed as Chairman of the Deacon Board. Under their leadership, they ensured a smooth transition to the next phase in the history of the church. On September 25, 2012, the congregation called Rev. Dr. Cory L. Jones to serve as Senior Pastor of Tabernacle Baptist Church. His wife, Torri Jones, joined him. On October 31, 2013 they were blessed with a daughter, Dakota Aubree Jones. In his official role as Pastor Elect, Rev. Jones preached his first sermon on Communion Sunday on December 9, On April 14, 2013, he was installed as Pastor. They first met in the home of the late Booker T. Williams, 308 East Federal Street, Burlington, New Jersey. As the group increased, they began having services in the Clarkson Street Hall. The success of the mission inspired the group to try to organize as a church. With this in mind, the following members of the group went to Mount Holly, joined Second Baptist Church and received their letters of transfer: Reverend Wesley L. Gregory, Brothers Lindsay Gregory, John Burroughs, Fred Lang, Tilson Williams, William Mack Burroughs, Vanderbilt Burroughs and Henry Neilson. The action on the part of these men set the stage for Second Baptist, Mount Holly to become known as the "Mother Church" of Tabernacle. The name "Tabernacle" was suggested by Sister Sallie E. Walton and was promptly adopted by the members. The Permanent Council of the Bethany Baptist Association of South Jersey later recognized the mission as "Tabernacle Baptist Church." Under the leadership of late Reverend Wesley L. Gregory, Tabernacle Baptist Church, of Burlington, New Jersey, was established in 1923 under the Mother Church of Second Baptist Mt. Holly, New Jersey. The Church became affiliated with the National Baptist Convention in On June 10, 1923, which was the second Sunday, the newly established church held its first official service with communion in the Grange Hall on Stacy Street. The first official boards of the new church were established as well as the Senior Choir, Church School, Missionary Circle and Ushers. The Deacon Board consisted of members who joined Tabernacle as recognized deacons. Deacon Feddis Walton, Sr. was appointed as Chairman and the other members were Deacons Julius Shelley, Lee Allen and Tilson Williams. The first deacons to be ordained for service in the new church were Deacons Otis Butts, Sr., James Jones, Thomas Burroughs, Sr., Fred Lang and Deacon West. The Trustee Board was formed with Brother Thomas Burroughs, Sr., as Chairman, Brother Philip Price, Vice Chairman and Brothers Booker T. Williams, Roosevelt Brown and Feddis Walton, Jr., as members. The Senior Choir was first organized in November 1923 at the home of the late Mr. Booker T. Williams, the first choir director. Mr. Inous Walton served as President and Sister Ruth Bolden Goodwin was the first pianist for the church. Sister Bessie R. Burroughs, one of the original members, remained active until her passing in January Tabernacle Baptist Church School was organized under Mr. Inous Walton and Vanderbilt Williams. Deacon Tilson Williams was appointed the first Superintendent, while Inous Walton and Irene Walton Means were teachers.
