4 Catholic New York Our Strengths Our Story The founding of Catholic New York in 1981 was the idea of Terence Cardinal Cooke, who was Archbishop of New York. The preceding decades of the 60s and 70s, marked by social upheaval and neighborhood disintegration, called for the Church to respond in unexpected and sweeping ways. Communicating to an audience of more than 2 million Catholics called for equally unexpected and sweeping approaches. Cardinal Cooke called for a new venture of Evangelization, a new pulpit to reach beyond church buildings and into homes and businesses, community centers and schools, commuter briefcases and carpool conversations, policy round tables and think tanks. He wanted to reach readers with news they could trust and with authoritative background and balance about religious and theological issues. That new pulpit was to be Catholic New York. Tumultuous times continue. And Catholic New York continues to measure local, national and world events against the moral and ethical codes of the Catholic faith; codes that have produced social, immigration, education, health care and child welfare reform, as well as statespersons... and even a few saints. Our Roots Before there was something called Catholic journalism in America, there was just journalism, and it was filled with religious content because American colonists were largely people of religious conviction. Benjamin Harris, editor of the colonial era paper, Public Occurrences, stressed the sovereignty of God in his news coverage. The biblical base of Alexander Hamilton s speech defending Peter Zenger was reported widely without censure. Catholics arrived in America in the 17th century looking for new freedoms and opportunities, but found an environment that was largely inhospitable to them. However, by 1832 there was a vibrant Catholic press. By the turn of the 19th century Boston s Catholic newspaper, The Pilot, had a circulation larger than the New York Times. By 1911, there was a Catholic Press Association with member publications numbering in the hundreds. By 1964, the Second Vatican Council issued a decree on mass communication that gave renewed impetus to the Catholic press. Religious journalism is as American as apple pie, and Catholic journalism is almost as old as American journalism itself. So, we re in pretty good company.
