Have staff read the riginal and cmpare their versin t the riginal. Depending n prir knwledge. Establish: That the stry f the birth f Jesus is actually a very small sectin f a much larger narrative called the Infancy Narrative. Have staff read Luke 1: 5-80 t see the whle stry. That nt all the Gspels have a stry abut the birth f Jesus. Grup 4 are t lk at all fur gspels and find ut hw many (and which nes) tell abut the birth f Jesus. Discuss: Remind staff that Luke s purpse was nt t write a factual reprt n what happened, but rather t shw that Jesus was different frm his birth; link t the genre midrash. Luke uses titles in his writing t shw his belief in Jesus. Examine the passage t find all the titles Luke gives t Jesus. (Saviur, Messiah [In Greek the wrd Christ means messiah] and Lrd). Lk up what each ne means n Explain that these titles were given t Jesus after his resurrectin, when peple had really cme t understand and believe in him. Luke is able t use them frm the beginning f his stry as he is writing well after the life f Jesus. Teach the wrd incarnatin: Christians believe that Gd came int the wrld at Christmas: this is called the incarnatin. Prvide a cpy f KIT n pages 18 and 24. 4

Learning Objectives Fcus Questin: Hw d we remember and wait fr the birth f Jesus? AT 1 (ii) Teaching & Learning Strategies Pupil Activities including differentiatin and n-ging assessment Key Infrmatin fr Teachers 6 At Christmas we celebrate the cming f Gd int the wrld in the persn f Jesus. The incarnatin is ne f the mst basic beliefs f Christians: that Jesus was Gd fully human and fully divine. The wrd incarnatin cmes frm the Latin wrd incarn which means t be made flesh. Advent is the first seasn f the Church year. The Christian wrd Advent cmes frm adventus, the name f a pagan feast; in the early Church it was used t refer t the secnd cming f Christ. Eventually it came t be assciated with anniversary celebratin f the birth f Christ. Advent lasts fr fur weeks and leads int the seasn f Christmas. This year Advent begins n Nvember 29 th. Why purple? The liturgical clur fr Advent is purple. This clur is generally assciated with penance hwever the md f Advent nw is mre ne f jy and anticipatin. Mre recently, then, there has been a mve away frm the heavy purple f Lent t lighter vilet shades fr Advent. Purple clth was riginally expensive t make s was used by ryalty and kings. In Advent it symblises the cming f Christ ur King. Why Advent Wreathes? The Advent wreath is a circle f evergreen leaves. It symblises Gd s presence which is endless and evergreen. It has fur candles arranged arund r in it: 3 purple and ne pink r rse (the third candle). The fur candles mark the fur weeks befre Christmas, with ne mre candle lit each Sunday during Advent. Traditinally three candles are purple with the candle fr the third, r Gaudete, Sunday being rse. Smetimes a Christmas candle is placed in the centre f the wreath n Christmas Eve. This candle shuld be lit thrughut the Christmas seasn. Its visual link with the Paschal candle f Easter and helps cnnect the celebratin f Christ s birth with its fulfilment at Easter. Why Advent Prayers and Readings? The prayers f the Church always fllw the Liturgical Year. By having prayers that refer t the liturgical seasn the Church helps us fcus ur thughts n what we are ding r sn ging t be celebrating. The prayers and readings during Advent fcus n peple wh waited fr the birth f Jesus and n ur waiting nw! As we listen t their experiences we anticipate their jy and ur wn. 6

7 Talk t pupils abut waiting experiences. If pssible have smene cme int the class wh is waiting fr smething: a trip, a special ccasin (wedding, visit frm smene) the birth f a baby. Questin them abut hw they prepare and what it feels like t wait fr smething. Recrd respnses t bth these questins. Link yur guest speaker s preparatin fr their special event t the Church preparing fr the birth f Jesus. Explain that this seasn f waiting is called Advent. Explain that in Advent, the Church prepares in special ways. Explain and explre sme f the symbls, actins and wrds f the Advent seasn. Use KIT abve ensure yu explain the reasns why these actins and practices are undertaken. This is required fr achievement f AT 1 (ii) Level 3. We decrate the Church (candles and clths) in purple. Our Priests als wear purple. Visit the Church if yu can and see the use f purple. Arrange t make and cntribute smething purple t the fyer r entrance (a purple pster abut what yur class is ding t wait.. Change yur prayer table t reflect the seasn. Swap the white candle fr a purple ne and place a purple clth n the table. Explain the symblism f the clur as yu wrk. See KIT abve. We make Advent Wreathes t cunt ff the weeks befre Christmas. Make an Advent wreath using natural materials: vines twisted int a circle; greenery inserted int a flrist asis; pinecnes placed in a ring; seedlings r green plants planted arund the edge f a rund pt. Place candles apprpriately. Have pupils trace arund their hand n green paper and cut them ut. Arrange them as leaves nt the classrm wall. Place candles 7

apprpriately. Explain the symblism f each part as yu build it. See KIT abve. We read abut thse wh waited fr the birth f Jesus. At Mass n each f the Sundays f Advent we hear abut smene wh has waited fr Jesus: n the furth Sunday f Advent we read Luke 1: Explain the symblism f this. See KIT abve 8 Prepare t Hear the Wrd Befre yu read the stry, explain that n the Sunday f the final week f Advent (this year Sunday 20 th December 2015) the Cathlic Church reads a passage frm the Gspel f Luke. Recall that this cming year we will hear frm Luke ften it is Year C; the Year f Luke. Name and explain the characters that are in the passage yu will study: Mary (a yung wman, engaged t Jseph, she is rather pr.) Jseph is nt mentined in the stry. Elizabeth (a righteus [faithful] lady, frm the priestly family f Aarn [Aarn is Mses brther]). Elizabeth is married t Zechariah (wh was a Priest in the Temple - he is nt in the stry). Explain that even thugh she is said t be very ld, Elizabeth is als pregnant. She will later give birth t Jhn the Baptist. Cntextualise the passage: Mary has been tld by the angel Gabriel that she will bear a child. While she is pregnant with Jesus, Mary visits her kinswman (nt cusin in the sense we use it) Elizabeth. Hear and Encunter the Wrd: Ideally tell the stry in yur wn wrds, being faithful t what Luke has written (characters, setting and events). Put a cpy f the actual text n the IWB. Read it thrugh with pupils carefully. Explain any terminlgy. Identify the actins f Mary: she travels t Elizabeth s huse and enters. She greets Elizabeth. Identify the actins f Elizabeth s unbrn child: it leaps in Elizabeth s wmb. 8

Identify the actins f Elizabeth: she speaks t Mary. Learn the stry by miming it (withut speaking) using the verbs as prmpts: Travel, enter, greet, leap (Elizabeth might need an actin t shw the mvement f her baby), speak. Fcus n the wrds in vs 42 and 43 (part f Elizabeth s speech). In small grups have pupils prpse: Why is Mary blessed? Why is Elizabeth surprised? What des Elizabeth call Mary s unbrn baby? 9 Respnd t the Wrd: Luke tells us that Elizabeth calls Jesus her Lrd. Explain that we use the term Lrd fr Jesus. It reminds us that Jesus is Gd, and that Gd is like a king t us. Recall metaphrs used t speak abut Gd frm the previus unit. Elizabeth is surprised t have the mther f Gd visit her! Decide, if Jesus was ging t cme and visit yur class, hw wuld yu get ready? Use the yutube link t teach pupils Everyday Gd. Use it as yur prayer during Advent as yu invite Gd t cme and be with us. 9

Rich Assessment Opprtunity: 10 Assessment Reminder! AT 1 (ii) Level 1 expects that pupils will recgnise sme religius signs and symbls and use sme religius wrds and phrases. In recgnising signs and symbls f Advent pupils may be able t name them r may knw a little abut them. Their knwledge will be limited r partial. In rder t mve t Level 2, pupils need t describe sme f the actins that Christians d. They might describe (say what happens, when, by whm, where) a symbl f Advent r a ritual r actin that is part f the Advent seasn. T achieve Level 3 f AT 1 (ii) pupils need t give reasns fr religius actins and symbls. In this unit Level 3 culd be achieved if pupils explain why Christians have the seasn f Advent, why they use purple, build a wreath r why they use particular readings r prayers. Outcmes: a. Recgnise, describe r give reasns fr sme f the symbls, actins and wrds assciated with Advent (AT 1 (ii) Levels 1-3) Onging bservatin fr assessment is particularly apprpriate fr this sectin f this unit as yu live Advent: Think Purple: Dip the ends f the pupil s pencils in purple paint; wrap yur rm in purple (arund the drway, ver the windws etc), have pupils write in purple pens. Make an Advent wreath use it in yur prayer each day Place yur Bible n the prayer table pen at Luke s reading. Make purple psters f what we d during Advent and why! As yu d these things questin children abut What we d and Why. Listen t their answers and assess their understanding. 10

Learning Objectives Fcus Questin: What happens in the stry f the birth f Jesus accrding t Luke? (AT 1 (i) Teaching & Learning Strategies Pupil Activities including differentiatin and n-ging assessment Key Infrmatin fr Teachers 11 A reprt is a factual piece f writing. Its purpse is t describe smething that has ccurred r may be ging t ccur. A reprt is structured rather like an essay with each new pint being in a new paragraph. Reprts generally summarise their findings in the cnclusin and ften recmmend the next piece f actin r step t take. A stry r narrative is written t entertain r t teach. It may be based n fact but may have been added t r changed t make the authrs pint clear. Narratives are truthful in that they cmmunicate values and beliefs that cmmunities hld t be real and true. Luke s birth stry cntains mst f the features we find in Christmas plays and stries. It des nt, hwever, cntain the dreams in which Jseph is spken t by an angel, a visit t the baby by wise men fllwing a star, r the flight f the family int Egypt. Each f these events is fund in Matthew s Gspel. When teaching pupils the stry f the birth f Jesus, make clear t them that there are tw stries in the Bible. These stries were written by different authrs and fr different cmmunities and tell the stry quite differently; yu are ging t learn Luke s stry. Luke s Gspel was written after Mark and at abut the same time as Matthew s It fllws Mark s structure with the ministry f Jesus arund Galilee and then a single jurney t Jerusalem fr Passver. Luke writes very well: he has many stries the ther Gspels dn't have and he is the nly writer t write a secnd vlume, Acts f the Apstles. Fr infrmatin n Luke see: Prepare t Hear the Wrd: Remind pupils f the difference between a stry and a reprt as literary frms. If pssible, link t English and examples f reprts and stries pupils have written r read. Explain that there are tw stries in the Gspels that tell us abut the birth f Jesus. One stry is fund in Luke s Gspel, the ther in Matthew s Gspel. Have 2 Bibles pen, ne displaying Matthew s accunt, the ther displaying Luke s. Tell pupils that the stries are very different frm each ther because when the authr wrte them they didn t write them as a reprt (t tell exactly what happened) but instead as a stry t share what they believed abut NOTE: AT 2 Big Questin. Set up the big questin fr this half term: Des the celebratin f Christmas tday include remembering the incarnatin f Gd? Put the questin n a display bard and have pupils respnd n a pst-it nte with their initial thughts as yu begin this tpic. Return t the questin tw r three times during yur study t enable pupils t change, extend, clarify r add t their view. Have their new thughts cver their ld nes t make a bklet f their thughts. Take a picture f the display at each sitting. Cllect the bklet f respnses at the cnclusin f the tpic and put them int the pupils 11

Jesus and as they wanted t emphasise different things abut Jesus the stries are a bit different. Explain that yu are ging t learn abut Luke s stry f the birth f Jesus as in Year C (which began at Advent, we read Luke s Gspel at Church. Have pupils use their prir knwledge f the birth f Jesus t predict the characters that will be in the stry. Use Think, Pair, Share t have them list all characters n the white bard then underline nly thse that are in Luke s stry: Jseph, Mary, Shepherds, an angel, Augustus, Quirinius, and ther peple. If pupils name wise men r Herd explain that they are in Matthew s stry. Fr explanatin f Think, Pair, Share see wn r a class bk. 12 Explain the living arrangements f families at the time f Jesus, in particular the meaning f the wrd kataluma a Greek wrd usually translated as inn. Refer t fr infrmatin n husing and the kataluma. Hear and Encunter the Wrd Tell pupils the stry f the birth f Jesus accrding t the Gspel f Luke. (Luke 2:1-20) Make sure yu have read it thrugh carefully yurself as it may be smewhat different frm what yu think! Use cncrete materials in yur strytelling if yu can. When yu cme t the wrd inn use the term kataluma ldging r guest rm t stress where the baby was brn. If yu use a cmmercially made nativity set, remember t take ut the wise men and the stable! Trace arund pupils and make character murals f each f the characters Luke has in his stry. Put clthes n each character accrding t their rle/jb and write what we knw abut them frm Luke s stry and frm ur knwledge f the sciety and time. Mary: A yung, engaged, rather pr Jewish girl. Jseph: Frm the family f King David, rather pr. A tradesman wh wrked with wd and stne. Augustus: The Emperr f Rme, very wealthy and 12

pwerful. In charge f the entire Rman Empire. Peple thught f him as a gd. Quirinius: The Gvernr f Syria. A pwerful ruler f his cuntry. Shepherds: Generally pr, rather grubby, sme peple thught they were sinners, s they were ften utcast by sciety. Angels: Messengers frm Gd Often represented with wings Play And then t learn the stry. (Fr explanatin f And Then see tureandthen.pdf (put link int address bar) 13 Use the sequencing strips t learn the stry Resurce 1 Enlarge the Fact File in Resurce 2 and have pupils fill it ut fr Jesus. Send hme the pupil Fact File fr families r caregivers t fill in. Cmpare the details. Have pupils make statements (written r ral) abut hw their birth and the birth f Jesus are different and the same. Respnd t the Wrd Explain that Christians believe that Jesus was Gd wh came int ur wrld be with us and t live like us. Nte that Gd chse rdinary peple t cme and be near, nt the wealthy and pwerful f the time. Use an adaptatin f Circle Chains t wnder abut the stry. echains.pdf (put link int address bar) I wnder why Gd chse Mary and Jseph t cme t and nt Augustus r Quirinius? I wnder if yu were ging t visit peple what srt f peple yu wuld g t? I wnder what Mary and Jseph thught abut Gd cming amng them? 13

I wnder if yu had heard the message that Gd had cme t a family near yu what yu wuld d? Wuld yu be like the shepherds? 14 Recall the purpse f a stry: t teach us smething imprtant. Luke wrte his Gspel because he believed that Jesus was the Messiah, the Sn f Gd the ne the peple had been waiting fr. Explain that frm Luke s stry f the birth f Jesus we see Luke s belief in him. Fcus n what Luke believes abut Jesus expressed in the wrds and actins f Mary and the shepherds. Use the Belief hand print activity t invite pupils t respnd t what they think we learn abut Mary and the shepherds frm this stry. In the palm write 'Luke s Christmas Stry. Invite pupils t write smething we learn frm each character in each finger. Scaffld learning with a questin such as What d we learn abut Jesus frm this stry? Fcus n belief in Mary. Christians believe that Mary is the mther f Gd: Thetks. She is lved by many peple as she helped bring Gd (as Jesus) int the wrld. Explain that Cathlics have a special devtin t Mary as the mther f Gd. Lk fr evidence f devtin t Mary arund yur schl and Church. Take phtgraphs f statues, altars and grtts devted t Mary. Sing sngs which praise Mary fr her part in bringing Gd int the wrld. Lk at schls, Churches in the lcal area r d a search n the Dicesan website fr schls dedicated t Mary. Gather as many titles fr Mary as yu can. Pray the Magnificat. Have pupils find Christmas activities r decratins in their lcal area: lcal newspapers, catalgues, displays, events in their lcal area, Church bulletins, ntice-bards, light displays, trees being sld etc. Make a list. Develp a survey t see what families in the schl are ding t get ready fr Christmas. Graph these results. Chse tw r three activities/events which are part f the lcal/family Christmas celebratin and which have a Christian 14

meaning. As yu decrate yur rm and schl, explain sme f their histry and why Christians d these things nw. Use the Pwerpint Christmas Traditins fr infrmatin abut many traditins. Fr example: Why d Christians hang up bells? Why d Christians put up Christmas trees? What d Christmas lights symblize fr Christians? Why d Christians g t Mass at Christmas? Why d Christians d Nativity plays? Why d Christians celebrate Christmas n December 25 th? 15 Rich Assessment Opprtunity: Assessment Reminder! T mve beynd AT 1 Level 1 (being familiar with a stry) and achieve Level 2 (retelling it) pupils need t have the setting, characters and events crrect! They shuld recall WHO was invlved, WHAT happened and WHERE it ccurred. What happens shuld be described in the crrect rder. (ie Augustus cant call the census after Mary and Jseph are in Bethlehem!) Pupils wh muddle the details, the characters r the events are wrking at Level 1 nly. T achieve AT 1 (i) Level 3 pupils will need t be able t link smething Christians believe t the stry f the birth f Jesus they have studied. AT 1 (iii) studies the way that peple behave in respnse t the their faith. Levels will be evident in whether pupils simply recgnise sme f the things Christians d (Level 1), are able t describe them, (Level 2) r can explain why these practices are part f Christmas celebratins (Level 3). Outcmes: b. Retell Luke s accunt f the birth f Jesus (AT 1 (i) Level 2) Invite pupils t be art critics. Their task is t chse a picture f the Christmas stry t explain whether it tells Luke s stry accurately. Give pupils 3 marking criteria : Setting; characters and events. Have pupils make a judgement abut the fidelity f the art-wrk under each criteria. See Resurce 3 fr criteria sheet. Search fr pictures n line f use Christmas cards. Yu may find it useful t print several images ut fr pupils. c. Link belief in Mary as the Thetks wh brings Gd int the wrld. (AT 1 (i) Level 3) Invite pupils t cnsider belief that Mary is Thetks the ne wh brings Gd int the wrld. Have pupils make belief statements: we believe that Mary brught Gd int the wrld. 15

NOTE: Because this task prvides pupils with the particular belief and text it shws nly the transitin frm AT 1 (i) Level 2 t Level d. Recgnise, describe r explain that peple act in particular ways because f their faith (AT 1 (iii) Levels 1-3 As pupils are learning abut the rituals and custms f Christmas listen t pupils discussin: are they able t explain what we d and why. Listen t their answers and assess their understanding. 16

BLOCK 2: Hw d Christians celebrate the cming f Gd int the wrld? Year C (C-1) Autumn Term 17 Cgnitive Outcmes: Assessment: By the end f this framewrk pupils will be able t: a. The prayers and readings during Advent fcus n peple wh waited fr the birth f Jesus and n ur waiting nw! As we listen t their experiences we anticipate their jy and ur wn. 18

Recall the learning f the last unit; that Christians believe in a single Gd (ne Gd). Remind pupils that Gd is pure spirit. We can neither see nr tuch Gd; Gd has n physical frm r prperties. Recall that Christians believe that, at a specific time in histry, Gd came int the wrld as a human. We call that human Jesus. Explain the wrd incarnatin. See KIT abve. Explain that every year Christians remember, wait fr and celebrate the birth f Jesus. The time f waiting fr Christmas is called Advent. D a Carusel Brainstrming activity by writing the questins belw n large sheets f paper and inviting pupils (in pairs r threes) t mve between each page and brainstrm and recrd their respnses. Pupils can affirm a previus answer with a tick. What is the seasn f Advent? What are sme f the symbls f Advent? When is the seasn f Advent? Why is Advent imprtant? After pupils have cmpleted the activity, hand ut Resurce 4 and cmpare the infrmatin gathered with that prvided. Make changes and additins as apprpriate. Acknwledge and celebrate Advent with sme f the Advent custms described in Resurce NOTE: AT 2 Big Questin. Cllect the bklet f respnses at the cnclusin f the tpic and put them int the pupils wn r a class bk. Explain that during Advent the Church reads stries f sme f the peple wh prepared fr the birth f Jesus: Jhn the Baptist and Mary the mther f Jesus. On the secnd Sunday we read Luke 3:1-6 (Jhn inviting peple t be baptised and t repent) One the third Sunday we read Luke 3:7-18 (Jhn telling peple sme f the things they shuld d t bear gd fruit.) 19

On the furth Sunday we read Luke 1: (Mary visiting Elizabeth) 20 Prepare t Hear the Wrd: Put pupils int small grups t explre these passages. Befre giving pupils a cpy f the passage they are t study, explain that in the cming year (Advent 2015 Advent 2016) we will read mstly frm the Gspel f Luke. This year is therefre called the Year f Luke. Because Luke s is the third Gspel in the New testament it is called Year C. (Matthew is Year A, Mark is Year B) Give pupils sme f the histry f the Gspel f Luke. Luke wrte tw bks: a Gspel and Acts f the Apstles, abut 50 years after the death and resurrectin f Jesus. He did nt knw Jesus persnally. What he des is write the stries he hears the peple arund him telling. Have pupils read the first few verses f each bk t see what Luke says abut his writing. Wh des Luke write fr? What des he hpe t achieve by writing? Luke gives his characters a lt t say! He uses dialgue a lt! Luke believes in three eras r ages: the time f Israel (the Old/First Testament), the time f Jesus and the time f the Church (the time after the ascensin f Jesus in his bks Acts) Luke s cmmunity was prbably fairly well educated and quite wealthy. In spite f this Luke writes ften emphasizes hw Gd is particularly cncerned fr thse wh are pr. Hear and Encunter the Wrd: Give pupils a duble spaced cpy f the passage they are ging t study. Have them read the passage carefully and deliberately. Pse cmprehensin questins: Wh are the characters is yur passage? Hw is Mary/Jhn the Baptist described in this passage? What srt f picture d yu get f yur character (read between the lines) 20

What srt f image d yu get f Mary/Jhn the Baptist? 21 Bring triad grups tgether t share findings: What d Mary and Jhn have in cmmn? Hw are they different? Explain that bth Jhn the Baptist and Mary are called bridging figures. Have pupils use talk partners t think abut and prpse what a bridging figure might be. (A bridging figure is ne wh bridges tw eras r ages in the case f Mary and Jhn they bridge the time f Israel (befre Jesus) and the actual time f Jesus. As bridges they live in bth eras. What makes Mary and Jhn particularly imprtant is that their actins enable and prepare fr Jesus.) Use Think, Pair, Share t discuss hw Mary/Jhn enable r prepare fr (make it happen r help it t happen) the cming f Jesus. Fr explanatin f Think Pair Share see Invite pupils t draw meaning frm (interpret) the passages. Discuss: What des Luke believe abut Mary and Jhn? Why are the stries f Mary and Jhn the Baptist particularly gd fr Advent? What can we learn frm them (their actins, wrds and belief) as we prepare t celebrate the birth f Jesus? Respnd t the Wrd: Explain that yur respnse t yur study f the stry is t be in the frm f preparing a liturgy fr Advent. Tell pupils that as they prduce their Liturgy yu are ging t be talking t them abut what they are ding t see hw well they are learning. 21

Rich Assessment Opprtunity: Outcmes: a. Prepare a Liturgy f the Wrd using Advent readings (AT 1 (ii) Level 4) 22 Explain the structure f a simple Liturgy f the Wrd. Explain that the structure is like Mass (Gathering, Wrd, Sacramental actin, Dismissal) but as there is n cmmunin this is called a Liturgy f the Wrd. Put the sectins f a Liturgy f the Wrd n the IWB r have pupils cpy them int their bks. Gathering sng r quiet music Opening Prayer Gspel Reading Hmily (Breaking Open the Wrd) Prayers f Intercessin Clsing prayer Final sng r quiet music Have pupils prepare a simple Liturgy f the Wrd using this structure. They shuld use the Gspel reading they have been studying as their gspel as their starting pint. Have them decide n the message frm the Gspel that they wish t express and then t prepare the ther sectins t match. Other resurces t supprt: Resurce 5: The pening prayers fr the secnd, third and frth Sunday f Advent fr pupils t use t mdel their wn n. Resurce 6: Suggestins fr Breaking Open the Wrd Resurce 7: A structure fr Prayers f Intercessin fr pupils t fill in and write Resurce 7: A blank Liturgy f the Wrd planning Sheet fr pupils t write n/in. The wrd Maranatha, used in the Clsing Prayer n the Liturgy f the Wrd utline means Cme Lrd Jesus. Learn: Litany f the Wrd by Bernadette Farrell. Use pupil s IT skills t have them type their Liturgies nt a dcument, cmplete with symbls and clurs frm the seasn f Advent. Put them int bks fr use at hme and schl. 22

23 Assessment f this utcme shuld be dne thrugh bservatin. The preparatin f the Liturgy f the Wrd is merely the cntext in which yu will determine pupil s understanding f a Liturgy f the Wrd. As such it des nt matter if pupils include similar things in their liturgy r if they wrk in grups. As pupils prepare their Liturgy f the Wrd, listen t their cnversatin. Alternatively ask them t respnd t the task in writing. Assessment Reminder! At AT 1 (ii) Level 4 pupils shuld be able t explain why prayer (particularly prayer fcused n peple wh waited fr Jesus) is an imprtant part f Advent. They shuld knw and use the names f the individual parts f the Liturgy (Opening/Clsing prayer, Gspel, Prayers f Intercessin etc) fr Level 3 achievement. Fr achievement f Level 4 they shuld understand that this Liturgy is nt a Mass and be able t explain what is missing. Finally, they shuld be able t explain that they have prepared a whle prayer and shw yu hw the individual parts cme tgether t celebrate a single message. 23

Learning Objectives Fcus Questin: Hw des the Gspel f Luke recrd the birth f Jesus? AT 1 (i) Teaching & Learning Strategies Pupil Activities including differentiatin and n-ging assessment Key Infrmatin fr Teachers 24 During the celebratin f Christmas, familiar images are recalled in hymns and Scripture abut the birth f Jesus. In the minds f mst peple the appearance f herald angels, shepherds abiding in the fields, the star f Bethlehem, the Virgin Mary giving birth in a stable and the adratin f the Magi, have all been melded int ne Christmas stry. They frm an imprtant part f the Cathlic Christian traditin and a wnderful pathway fr entering int the mystery f the Incarnatin. The tw infancy narratives prvide distinct and at times cntradictry stries f Jesus' birth. While mst schlars wuld cncede that that there is very little in the infancy narratives that are histrically accurate, these stries are viewed by Christians as stries f faith, rich in symblism and metaphr. The Gspels were written by men wh were amng the first t have the faith and wanted t share it with thers. Having knwn in faith wh Jesus is, they culd see and make thers see the traces f his mystery in all his earthly life. Frm the swaddling clthes f his birth t the vinegar f his Passin and the shrud f his Resurrectin, everything in Jesus' life was a sign f his mystery. His deeds, miracles and wrds all revealed that "in him the whle fullness f deity dwells bdily." His humanity appeared as "sacrament", that is, the sign and instrument, f his divinity and f the salvatin he brings: what was visible in his earthly life leads t the invisible mystery f his divine snship and redemptive missin. (Catechism f the Cathlic Church #515). It is imprtant fr students t knw these stries bth frm the standpint f stries f faith but als frm the standpint f textual analysis. There is n Scriptural text withut a cntext. It is useful fr students t be able t identify the similarities and differences in the tw birth stries and t explre why gspel writers chse t include and mit particular details. As students understanding develps they need t mve beynd a literal interpretatin f these accunts t mre inferential and evaluative levels f understandings. Nt withstanding this, it is als imprtant that students understand hw these narratives are interpreted within the Church in its life f faith. Althugh we shall never be sure abut the exact circumstances f Jesus' birth, we d knw that abut tw thusand years ag, there was brn in rural Palestine an extrardinary Jew wh was t change prfundly the curse f human histry. Fr faithful Christians, Jesus Christ is the Incarnatin f Gd the Father and the central figure f the Christian stry. Fr further reading see the Dicese f Brisbane Cathlic Educatin Office site: 24

25 Prepare t Hear the Wrd: Establish what pupils knw abut the stry already. Make a class stry map f the birth f Jesus as the pupils knw it nw. Put pupils int 7 grups and give them prir learning t undertake befre reading the text. (Fr year 3 pupils yu may prefer t select nly sme f the grup activities.) Explain that this passage is written in the literary frm midrash. Grup 1 is t find midrash n (Biblical Genres) and explain the frm t ther pupils. Explain that tw places are mentined in the stry. Grup 2 is t use a map f Palestine in the 1 st Century and find the places the stry mentins: Nazareth and Bethlehem. They are t wrk ut hw far Mary and Jseph travelled and hw lng it wuld have taken them t walk at 4 miles per hur. Map f Palestine Explain that this stry cntains the wrd inn. Grup 3 is t find the wrd Inn n and explain what the wrd was in Greek and what it meant. Explain that nt all the Gspels have a stry abut the birth f Jesus. Grup 4 are t lk at all fur gspels and find ut hw many (and which nes) tell abut the birth f Jesus. Explain that the stry yu are t learn abut mentins tw histrical figures. Grup 5 is t find ut abut the Emperr Augustus and Grup 6 is t find ut abut the Gvernr f Syria, Quirinius. Explain the literary cntext this passage is taken frm. The stry f the birth f Jesus is actually a very small sectin f a much larger narrative called the Infancy Narrative. 25

Grup 7 are t read Luke 1: 5-80 and summarise what has happened in the lead up t this stry. 26 Hear and Encunter the Wrd: Learn abut the text by having grups reprt their findings t the class. What is the literary frm/genre f Luke s stry? Hw many Gspels have a stry f the birth f Jesus? Which nes? Where are Nazareth and Bethlehem? Was it a lng walk? What des the wrd inn mean? Wh were Augustus and Quirinius? What has happened t Mary and Jseph befre their jurney t Bethlehem? Place the passage (Luke 2:1-20) nt the IWB OR have pupils find it in their Bibles. Have pupils d a careful reading f the text, identifying the characters, settings and events. G back t yur earlier predictins abut the stry: critique yur class stry-map. Give yurself a mark ut f 10 Hw well did yu knw Luke s stry f the birth f Jesus? What did yu have wrng? Did yu include infrmatin frm anther surce Matthew s Gspel r the Traditin? Use Black Fire/White Fire t explre the details that are missing frm Luke s accunt: hw did the family travel? Did Mary and Jseph travel alne t Bethlehem? Was Mary pregnant when they travelled? Did Jseph still have family living in Bethlehem? See WhiteFire.pdf (put link int address bar) Luke leaves a lt f detail ut. Discuss why this might have been. Remind pupils his purpse was nt t write a factual reprt n what happened, but rather t shw that Jesus was different frm his birth; link t the genre midrash. Given this, have pupils find the mst imprtant sentence in the passage. Airbrush the text. Fr an explanatin f airbrushing see g.pdf (put link int address bar) 26

27 Respnd t the Wrd: Luke uses titles in his writing t shw his belief in Jesus. Examine the passage t find all the titles Luke gives t Jesus. (Saviur, Messiah [In Greek the wrd Christ means messiah] and Lrd). Lk up what each ne means n Write simple definitinal sentences using these titles. Eg When we call Jesus messiah we are saying that we believe that. Explain that these titles were given t Jesus after his resurrectin, when peple had really cme t understand and believe in him. Luke is able t use them frm the beginning f his stry as he is writing well after the life f Jesus. Have pupils build acrstic pems using the titles Luke uses with events frm the life f Jesus (things he said, r did) which helped build belief that Jesus was the Saviur, Messiah, Christ and Lrd. Only tw gspels have accunts f the birth f Jesus. Read Matthew s accunt (Mt 1:18-2;23) Use a Venn Diagram t recrd the details they have in cmmn and thse that are different. Recall the Gspels are dcuments f faith intended t bring thers t faith nt t write a bigraphy f Jesus. In pairs discuss: Des it matter that sme f the details are different? What des each authr believe abut Jesus? Where is the evidence? What is each authr is trying t say? Teach the wrd incarnatin: Christians believe that Gd came int the wrld at Christmas: this is called the incarnatin. 27

Rich Assessment Opprtunity: 28 Assessment Reminder! T be wrking at AT1 (i) Level 3, pupils need t make a clear link between Scripture and the incarnatin. In explaining the cnnectin between Luke s Gspel and the incarnatin pupils may draw n the Advent readings, the Annunciatin (the angel telling Mary she will have Gd s sn), the stry f the birth f Jesus, the titles Luke gives t Jesus r ne f the passages they used in their acrstic pem. Outcmes: b. Examine Luke s accunt f the birth f Jesus and identify expressin f belief in the incarnatin (AT 1 (i) Level 3) Recall belief in Gd as pure spirit, explred in the previus unit. Gd is lve, frgiveness, justice, cmpassin, mercy. Give pupils clay r play-dugh and ask them t make their wn shape f Gd wh is a pure spirit. (Recall r revisit the previus unit Beginning with Gd fr further discussin.) Invite them then t re-fashin their clay r play-dugh (r give them anther piece) int the shape f a human persn. Ask them t explain the incarnatin they have mdelled in an extended piece f writing. NOTE: If the budget can stand it, use airdry clay and have the pupils make tw mdels t keep. What is the incarnatin? What des it say abut Jesus? Hw des Luke shw us that he believes in the incarnatin? D we still believe in the incarnatin f Gd? Hw d yu knw? (in answering this questin pupils may mve t Level 4 if they are able t explain aspects f the Traditin which express the incarnatin tday.) Have pupils find Christmas activities r decratins in their hmes, the schl, the Church and the lcal area: lcal newspapers, catalgues, displays, events in their lcal area, Church bulletins, light displays, trees being sld etc. Graph these t build a picture f hw Christmas is celebrated tday. Use the infrmatin n the pwerpint Christmas Traditins t explain sme f the traditins which are part f Christmas nw. Make fact files, knwledge banks, psters, Did yu knw? banners, 28

Guess Wh r Quiz questins t learn and display infrmatin. Activities are suggested between sectins f infrmatin n the pwerpint. See Dicese f Westminster; Tab fr the pwerpint. 29 Find stries set at Christmas in yur schl r lcal library. Read ne. Althugh these stries may nt mentin Jesus, is the incarnatin the cming f Gd wh is lve, anywhere in the stry? Where are there glimpses f Gd in the stry? In the cming tgether f angels and shepherds Luke places the wrlds f the human and the divine in the same scene. Lk at hw artists have depicted this scene. Hw d they shw the different natures f the characters? Rich Assessment Opprtunity: Assessment Reminder! T achieve AT 1 (i) Level 4 pupils must include what the incarnatin is, its Scriptural surce and, as a secnd surce, the experience f Christmas tday. T achieve AT 1 (ii) Level 4 their writing shuld prvide evidence fr their view. Apprpriate evidence wuld be the drawing f a cnclusin n the basis f their study f the individual actins, rituals and practices they have learned abut. Outcmes: c. Make links between tw surces: the incarnatin in Scripture and in the celebratin f Christmas tday (AT 1 (i) Level 4) Have pupils cmplete an extended piece f writing t respnd t yur BIG questin Des the celebratin f Christmas tday include remembering the incarnatin f Gd? Regardless f whether pupils think it des r des nt, their writing r cnversatin shuld indicate that they understand that Christmas is abut the incarnatin. Pupils shuld make reference t Luke s Christmas stry, hw it expresses belief in the incarnatin and cntinued belief in the incarnatin nw. They shuld speak abut the rituals and custms f Christmas nw in justifying their answer. 29

30 Additinal Big Questin: In the 2001 census, 71% f the ppulatin said they were Christian, yet in 2003 between 50-60% said they did nt believe in Gd. Debate: Is it pssible t call yurself a Christian but nt believe in Gd? Is it right t celebrate Christmas if yu d nt believe in Gd? d. Questin fr AT 1 (ii) Level 4 d yu think that belief in the incarnatin shapes a persn s life (AT 1 (iii) Level 4) 30

38 Resurce 4: Infrmatin n Advent What is Advent? It is a seasn f 4 weeks in the Liturgical Year. The purpse f Advent is fr us t prepare fr the seasn f Christmas. When des Advent start? The seasn f Advent cvers the fur Sundays befre Christmas, s if yu cunt backwards frm Christmas t the furth Sunday, yu will find the starting pint fr Advent. Why d we have Advent? The seasn f Advent helps t remind us f the imprtance f the Christmas seasn and it helps us t prepare in ur hearts, in ur minds and in ur wrld t celebrate Jesus birth. Fr Christians Christmas celebrates the incarnatin - that Gd came t lve with is in ur wrld. By listening t the readings f peple wh prepared fr the birth f Jesus we can pray t becme peple like them: t recgnise the presence f Gd in ur wrld and t prepare t help celebrate it and annunce it again. What are sme symbls f Advent? Liturgical Clur: The liturgical clur fr Advent, as fr Lent, is purple. Purple is usually assciated with Penance. Hwever the md f Advent is ne f preparatin and jyful waiting. Advent Wreath: One f the key symbls f Advent is the Advent Wreath. The circle f the wreath is made frm evergreen leaves. Circles d nt have a beginning r an end and therefre the circle shape represents Gd s unending lve fr us. The evergreen leaves symblise grwth and hpe f unending life. Fur candles are placed in the Advent Wreath (smetimes three f these are purple and the furth ne rse/pink t represent jy). The fur candles mark the fur weeks befre Christmas, with ne mre candle lit each Sunday during Advent. Symbls f Advent help t remind us that we are peple wh wait in jy fr lve, hpe and wnder t cme int the wrld. The birth f Jesus is abut lve being brn and knwing that Gd is with us. 38

39 Resurce 5: Prayers fr the weeks f Advent The prayers are the pening prayers fr the secnd, third and frth Sunday f Advent fr pupils t use. They are called the Cllect as they cllect the peple tgether. These prayers have been adapted and simplified t suit pupils understanding. 2 nd Sunday f Advent Almighty and merciful Gd, May nthing we d here n earth prevent us as we wait t meet yur Sn. May ur learning abut yu and ur belief in yu bring us clse t yu. We ask this prayer thrugh Christ wh lives and reigns with yu in the unity f the Hly Spirit, ne Gd, fr ever and ever. Amen 3 rd Sunday f Advent O Gd, yu see hw yur peple faithfully await the feast f the Lrd s birth. Enable us, we pray, t celebrate the birth f Jesus with thughtful wrship and glad rejicing. We ask this thrugh ur Lrd Jesus Christ, yur Sn, wh lives and reigns with yu in the unity f the Hly Spirit, ne Gd, fr ever and ever. Amen 4 th Sunday f Advent Pur yur grace int ur hearts, s that we, wh heard abut the Incarnatin f Christ yur Sn thrugh the message f an Angel, may be brught t the glry f his Resurrectin. The phrase Break pen the Wrd is a metaphr which suggests that the reading (Wrd) we have heard is like an egg r nut we break it pen t see and find the gdness inside. T Break Open the Wrd pupils might: Lk at the characters in the Gspel reading and make statements abut what they d and then pse a questin t ask if we are like them. Eg.
