Nicolás The Meeting with the Holy Father & His Mission to Us The Documents, especially the Response to the Pope & the Decree on Mission Discussion on the Intellectual Apostolate with Fr. 4 The Resignation Of Father Kolvenbach Thank you for the way you have fired me.

The Legacy of Fr. Kolvenbach for Higher Education Relationship with the Holy See Jesuit-Lay Partnership Presentations at Georgetown (1989) & Santa Clara (2000) GC 34 Writings, including: Formation Manifestation Community Sentire cum ecclesia

The Election Of Adolfo Nicolás The experience of the Election The meaning for the Congregation From the era of Fr. Kolvenbach to that of Fr. Nicolás Why this man now? What does it say about the Society at this moment in history?

Relations With The Holy Father Renewal and deepening as the Holy Father tells the Society of Jesus: the Church needs you

Key Moments & Insights The Pope s Letter & Audience: Personal Affection & Mission The Congregation s Response: Heart Speaking to Heart Our Mission in & for the Church: The Ecclesial Congregation

The Documents Of GC 35 Response to the Holy Father Decree on Governance Decree on Obedience Decree on Identity Decree on Mission Decree on Collaboration with Others

Key Points of the Holy Father s Letter & Audience for the Jesuit Mission in Higher Education I. AFFECTION FOR THE SOCIETY The Church needs you, counts on you, and continues to turn to you with confidence, particularly to reach the geographical and spiritual places where others do not reach or find it difficult to reach. Speaking out of the history and in line with the words of previous Popes, e.g. Paul VI: Wherever in the church, even in the most difficult and extreme fields...here also have there been and there are Jesuits (quote from Paul VI).

II. THE NEED TO BE AT THE FRONTIERS & THE CENTER Images Chosen: Matteo Ricci; Roberto de Nobili; Reductions of Paraguay: inculturation, interreligious dialogue, justice. Called to seek to recognize signs of God s presence even beyond the bounds of the visible Church, but with loyalty to the Church s mission. We must constantly hold to our Catholic identity in our mission to the frontiers : you must also take care that your work and institutions always maintain a clear and explicit identity....

III. UNITY OF THE INTELLECTUAL & SPIRITUAL MISSION The Church calls on the Society to show that there is a profound harmony between faith and reason, between the Gospel spirit, the thirst for justice and initiatives for peace....the Society of Jesus should therefore give preferential attention to this. This quest for quality and for human, spiritual, and cultural validity must also characterize the whole of the Jesuits manyfaceted formative and educative activities.

Key Points of the Congregation s Response to the Holy Father for the Jesuit Mission in Higher Education Acknowledgement of the Holy Father s deep esteem for the Society and appreciation of his call to our mission in the complexity of the world. Acceptance of the mission given us by the Holy Father: i.e., a defense and a proclamation of the faith, that we should explore new horizons and reach new social, cultural and religious frontiers, borderlands that, as Fr Adolfo Nicolás related in his words to the Holy Father, can be places of conflict and tension that endanger our reputation, our peace, and our security.

Nature of our Mission in the Church Jesuits & Jesuit institutions are called to respond to the Church s need: What the Church expects from us is a sincere cooperation in the search for the full truth to which the Spirit leads us. In an era of complex social, cultural and religious challenges, the Pope asks us to help the Church faithfully. That help and this service are not confined to our theologians; they extend to all Jesuits, called to act with great pastoral sensitivity in the range of our missions and apostolic work, and it must manifest itself also in the institutions of the Society as a feature of their identity.

The Intellectual Apostolate The intellectual apostolate is a central part of the Jesuit service for the life and mission of the Church today. An inherent tension in the work: need to be engaged in various social and cultural communities; to be at the New Frontiers of our times and also rooted at the very heart of the Church. Need for a creative fidelity, which holds the tension, and recognizes that some of our reactions and attitudes have not always been expressed with humility and prudence. A new epoch, marked by greater love & service in the Church in our unique and valued way.

Decree on Mission: Key Points for Intellectual Apostolate Building Right Relationships: Reconciliation as Mission Affirms the work of GC 31-34: serve faith, promote justice, and dialogue with culture & other religions in light of the prophetic call Globalization as both good and threatening, & ecological damage as a new context of mission. All our ministries must look towards greater networking and towards a mission of reconciliation. Advocacy, research, and commitment to the poor are central calls: all about building right relationships

RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD. Centrality of the Spiritual Exercises in formation for justice. RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH ONE ANOTHER. Our intellectual apostolate provides an inestimable help in setting up these bridges, offering us new ways of understanding in depth the mechanisms and links among present problems. RIGHT RELATIONSHIPS WITH CREATION. Ecological consciousness is a constitutive element of mission. This Congregation urges all Jesuits and all partners engaged in the same mission, particularly the universities and research centers, to continue promoting studies and practices focusing on the causes of poverty and the improvement of the environment. appreciate more deeply our covenant with creation

Global Preferences: affirmation of the idea of Global Preferences for all ministries of the Society Africa China Migration & Refugees Roman Institutions Intellectual Apostolate the Congregation calls for a strengthening and renewal of this apostolate as a privileged means for the Society to respond adequately to the important intellectual contribution to which the Church calls us. Mission includes community life: Life-style that witnesses & supports apostolic choices. Community is not just for mission, it is itself mission.

Decree on Collaboration: Key Points for Higher Education Affirming & thankful of GC34 and what has happened since. Ministry-centered: Ignatian work--contextual, experiential, reflective, active, evaluative Jesuit work--ignatian with clear relationship with SJ through Provincial & local community. Leadership depends on commitment for mission. Evaluation important.

PRINCIPAL RECOMMENDATIONS Revision of Guideline for the Relationship Between the Superior & the Director of the Work. Province guidelines on sponsorship of a Jesuit work. Development of tools for evaluation of Jesuit works. Formation & ongoing formation of Jesuits for collaborative ministry. Development of opportunities & structures for the formation of others in collaborative mission. Development of opportunities & structures for the formation of collaborative leaders in Jesuit ministry. Networking, at all levels, among Jesuit and Ignatian works. Networking with other communities in the Ignatian family. Networking with other types of ministry.

Topics Youth Vocations Migrants Fundamentalism Communications Ecology Formation Community Life Africa China Roman Houses Finances Jesuit Brothers Indigenous Peoples Advising Fr. General: Consultation on Ordinary Governance

The Intellectual Apostolate No independent document at this Congregation, but much discussion with Fr. General. Central to the mission and call of the Society today, so needs to be addressed universally. Formation of Jesuits for this ministry: encouragement for scholarship & languages for all. Networking of various educational and intellectual ministries: e.g., Messina Project Expansion of Higher Education Secretariat in Rome to include the broader Intellectual Apostolate (Paul Locatelli)

Liturgy & Prayer Liturgy became a source of unity and identity Daily morning prayer in English, French, Italian, & Spanish Daily liturgy with language groups, but also to see other communities of worship. Major liturgies as occasions of celebration and unity in diversity: various languages, European and other, throughout the mass. Music as a crucial component.

World-wide Prayer: Multiple languages in multiple venues. English masses from each assistancy. Special masses for John de Brito, Indigenous Peoples, Parish workers, and others.
