2 ORDER OF WORSHIP January 27, 2013 PRELUDE Adagio, Allegro (Flute Sonata in E) Laura Wilkins, Flute; Allen Steere, piano 10:00 AM J. S. Bach WELCOME AND CALL TO WORSHIP *HYMN NO. 67 Let Me Enter God s Own Dwelling (first 4 verses) New Century Hymnal UNSER HERRSCHER *PRAYER OF PRAISE Pam Emslie CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION God of steadfast love, we confess to you, to ourselves, and to one another, that we fall short of what you have called us to be. You created us, and lovingly claimed us as your own and yet too often we turn away from you and live as though we are only accountable to ourselves. Forgive us, God, and help us remember that we are called to be your people in community, together. Help us be your body here in this place - each of us with our strengths and our failings. Give us strength to live out our covenant with one another and to live and breathe the love of your Holy Spirit into our world, together. Help us move closer to you now, God, as we pray our silent prayers of confession SILENT PRAYER *WORDS OF ASSURANCE *PASSING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

3 *RESPONSE IN SONG Arise Your Light Has Come ANTHEM I Sat Down Under His Shadow Edward C. Bairstow I sat down under his shadow with great delight, and his fruit was sweet to my taste. He brought me to the banqueting house, and his banner over me was love. CELEBRATION OF COVENANT RECEPTION OF NEW MEMBERS Presentation of New Members Question to New Members Pastor: By your baptism you were made one with us in the body of Christ, the Church. We rejoice in your pilgrimage of Faith in this time and place; we give thanks for every community of faith that has been your spiritual home, and we celebrate your presence in this household of faith. Do you promise to participate in the life and mission of this family of God s people, sharing regularly in the worship of God, and enlisting in the work of this congregation as it serves this community and the world? New Members: I promise, with the help of God. Prayer Welcome by the Congregation People: We welcome you with joy as partners in the common life of this church. We promise you our friendship and prayers as we share the hopes and labors of the Church of Jesus Christ. By the power of the Holy Spirit may we continue to grow together in God s knowledge and love and to be witnesses of our risen Savior. The Sharing of the Church Covenant

4 Unison: We are banded together as a Christian church to maintain the worship of God, to proclaim the gospel of Christ, to develop in all people a consciousness of their relations and duties to God and to each other, and to inspire them with love for truth, passion for righteousness, and enthusiasm for service. To this end we pledge our loyalty to Christ and covenant with each other to express His Spirit in our individual and corporate life; to live together as Christians and to submit ourselves to the government of this church, working, giving, praying for its increase, its purity, its peace and seeking in every way to make it a power for the building up of the kingdom of God. Welcoming of New Members with the Right Hand of Fellowship *HYMN NO. 537 Christian, Rise and Act Your Creed New Century Hymnal INNOCENTS Students may now leave for classes. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen.

We are so grateful to the Deacons who made the calls, and to all of you in our Congregation who answered your phones and engaged in conversation. Based on the responses we have gathered so far, the great majority of you were glad - even delighted - to receive a call. Many of our Deacons mentioned they enjoyed making the calls, or met someone they had not known before in the process. Given what we have heard from you, we believe this calls did precisely what we hope they would dostrengthen the connections we have in this community of faith and celebrate all that we share together. Food may be dropped off anytime in the designated box in the Cloister and in the basket at the Village Common entrance. New "Members Area" of Church Website This March we will launch a secure, password-protected members-only area of our website for members and friends of Village Church. Here you will find an online membership directory, a prayer requests section, a Village Church blog, a section for announcements and a section for groups and committees to communicate and share documents such as board minutes, budgets, and more. We are excited to see the ways this new area of the website will further friendship and spiritual growth in our community. To create the initial online member directory, we will upload the contact information currently on file in the Church Office for our members. Once added, your information will not be accessible to anyone but members and friends of our community; however, if you prefer not to make your information available to other Village Church members via the online member directory, or if you would like to make changes to your contact information, please contact Tricia Kibbe by February 8. We also want to assure you that the online directory will not replace the Village Churchwomen s paper directory. 11 Notice of Congregational Hearing On Sunday, February 10 at 11:30 am in the Sanctuary there will be a Congregational Hearing. The purpose of this hearing is to review and discuss the job description for the position of Associate Pastor proposed by the Search Committee for Kathy Musser s successor. A copy of the job description can be found on our church website or on the table in the Central Street lobby. All Church School Family Brunch and 4 th Grade Bible Celebration Sunday, February 10 Please join us immediately after 10 am worship for light food and fellowship with each other and with our pastors. The brunch will take place downstairs in Village Hall. Cradle to Crayons Service Opportunity Donations through Friday, March 8 Service opportunity for families with children ages 5 and over! The Village Church Moms are organizing a collection of children's clothing, toys and books and an afternoon of service at Cradles to Crayons. Cradles to Crayons provides children from birth through age 12, living in homeless or low-income situations, with the essential items they need to thrive - at home, at school and at play. They supply these items free of charge by engaging and connecting communities that have with communities that need. Cradles to Crayons collects new and like-new children's items which are then inspected, sorted and processed by volunteers. Next, volunteers are given a wish list of an individual child, provided by the child s social worker, and asked to create a package filled with as many items on the list as possible. The packages are then distributed, free of charge, across the state through a collaborative network of over 300 social service agencies. Donations of new and like-new children s clothing, toys and books can be made in the baskets in the Cloister hallway through March 8. A group of families from Village Church will sort donations and prepare packages on March 9, 1-3 pm at Cradles to Crayons Giving Factory in Brighton. Anyone ages 5+ are welcome, and the only request is that there be at least one adult for every 3 children. This is a great way to connect children with the needs of others in our community and clean your closets at the same time! Please RSVP (or ask questions) to Julie Barker: juliegbarker@hotmail.com or Network Coordinator The Network Coordinator reports to the Director and is responsible for all activities related to the development and implementation of a comprehensive volunteer program. Since most financial and in-kind donations are made by active volunteers, responsibilities will include a leadership role in the fundraising activities of the organization. This position will include working with new and current volunteers and congregations, and the coordination of community, corporate and other volunteers. The Network Coordinator position will support volunteer needs for all Family Promise Metrowest (FPM) programs and special events. This is a 24 hour per week position and does include some evening and weekend hours as well as on-call rotation responsibilities. Minimum Requirements: Bachelor s degree in related field. Minimum three years experience in development related activities, including volunteer recruitment and training and donor growth and retention. Interested candidates submit cover letter and resume to director@familypromisemetrowest.org.
