1 1 2 Jesus Calls Himself the Good Shepherd understand that Jesus loves us when we are sorry. Jesus called himself the Good Shepherd. Perhaps one of the best commentaries on the Good Shepherd comes from Fernando D Alfonso, a Nevada sheepherder of our time who cared for his flock in much the same way that good shepherds did thousands of years ago. He points out that sheep follow their shepherd wherever he leads. They instinctively trust that the shepherd will guard them, which often requires the shepherd to leave his fold to go in search of stray sheep. At some time every day, each sheep leaves its place and goes to the shepherd. After a few minutes with the shepherd, the sheep returns to its place refreshed and made content by this personal contact. The Eucharist is Christ s gift to his Church. Christ calls us together, and it is his saving mystery that is made present in every eucharistic celebration. Christ calls us as a community that gives praise and thanks to the Father at Mass and in the words and deeds of each day. 2 3 4 Jesus Christ Is Lord and King understand that Jesus ascended to heaven, but he will come again in glory to judge the world according to its love. The risen Christ came from the world of glory to manifest himself to his disciples. After appearing to many, Jesus returned to his Father, as Scripture and Tradition put it, by ascending to heaven from the Mount of Olives. Jesus left his own; he withdrew his visible presence from Mary, the Apostles, the disciples, and all in generations to come. None of his people is forgotten. He has gone to prepare a place for his own, those who believe, hope, and love. He will return and lead them to the heavenly mansion. The final coming of Jesus the Lord and King is the Parousia, at which time all things will be complete. The battle between Satan and God s friends will be over. 3 5 6 God Calls Us to Be Holy understand that God calls us to holiness through different states of life. We travel various routes to perfection. Some people are called to marriage or to the single life; others to religious life, secular institutes, or the ordained ministry. However, no vocation can be followed or lived without prayer. We must always be centered on Jesus. Christ seeks us: Behold, I stand at the door and knock. (Revelation 3:20) If we open our hearts to him and live in his presence, he will give us the joy, peace, and grace of perseverance in our daily struggles. Our vocation in life is nurtured in our family, the domestic church. In the family, we learn to love, to listen, to share, and to serve. We first learn to worship God, to forgive, and to work together. Our first experience of God and his Church is through the domestic church of our families. New life could not be given to the old order merely by patching; that would only weaken it. Jesus raised the whole law to a new plane. He did not destroy the old wineskin, but he brought the new wineskin, the new order of living that preserved all that was good, universal, and life-giving.
