3 Introduction The importance of memory work is being questioned by many in today s world. However, sound educators have always believed that it is academically essential for children to accumulate information in an exact form in their mind. History proves that this is a valid and powerful tool for intellectual growth. Positive results are found in training our memory to recall sentence structure and new vocabulary accurately. The following texts provide a challenge for our students. Yet the acquisition of the ensuing texts in our student s minds is not simply an academic exercise. As Lutherans we believe that the Holy Spirit works faith through the Word. As the children memorize these texts, the Holy Spirit is given the opportunity to draw them closer to their Savior by pouring out in their lives His grace and forgiveness. The Spirit will also lead them into a life of sanctification and service to their neighbor. Even if the full meaning of the texts is not recognized now, the book provides a beginning of spiritual enlightenment. The purpose of our memory book is to shape and direct the children s spirituality helping them to focus on their Savior and His Word. Instructive Bible verses, prayers, the Small Catechism and Christ-centered Lutheran Hymns are used in order to foster a positive, Christian ethos among the students. This will encourage them to remain grounded in the true faith which always centers on the Savior. By reciting the Word of God, the 3

4 children will learn more of their Savior s unending love for them. The texts loosely follow our liturgical calendar incorporating those seasons and festivals which occur during the school year. The exact dates, of course, vary from year to year, but they generally follow the course of the church year including: Advent, Christmas, Epiphany, Transfiguration, Lent, Holy Week, Easter, Ascension, Pentecost, Trinity, and Reformation. This book may be useful for the entire family as it prays, sings, and reads God s Word together through the year. The committing of these texts to our student s memory will aid them throughout life as they recall their reassuring message in times of change, temptation, and distress (2 Timothy 3:15-17). Christians experiencing adversity or uncertainty often remark on the great comfort provided by meditating on Christian texts committed to memory. These texts also provide an essential source of knowledge for the students to draw from when called to give an answer for the hope that lives within them (1 Peter 3:15). May this book provide a solid spiritual foundation which guides our children through all of life helping them to remain close to their Savior Jesus Christ and His gifts of Word and Sacrament! Rev. Douglas Zahner July

5 Tips for Memorization A text is assigned for each day of the school year. The students are expected to return to school the following day with the text memorized. On review days multiple texts may need to be recited. Review day requirements may be slightly adjusted by the teacher depending on the level of difficulty. Parental involvement is key for proper memorization of these texts. Parents need to encourage and support their children as they learn God s Word. 1. Review your memory work assignments as a family. Read these texts and sing them in your home. Spiritual blessings will be seen by the entire household. 2. As the year goes on, keep these verses, hymns and prayers in the devotional repository of your child s life. 3. Beginning memory work as soon as the school day concludes and then a second time later in the evening is most likely to fix the words in your child s mind clearly. Avoid last-minute memorization! 4. Explaining the meaning and vocabulary of the text to your child will prove beneficial. The more your child understands about the text the better they will be able to recite it. Even when your child does not understand the meaning of the text, it remains beneficial for the text to be set in their memory. 5

6 5. Recite the text at the dinner table and at evening or bedtime devotions. 6. Repeating small portions of the text again and again to your child and then slowly building on what has been learned may prove effective. 7. Music aids memorization. This book contains many hymns and parts of the liturgy which are set to music. Those marked LSB are taken from the Lutheran Service Book. Those marked TLH are taken from The Lutheran Hymnal. Your child will likely find it easier to recall the hymns and liturgy if they are sung rather than spoken. All of the tunes can be found on the internet to assist in singing them with your children. Please ask for more information. 8. As your child begins to read, challenge the child to read the texts by themselves. Afterwards, you can use a white board or chalk board to have your child write the words and then erase the words one by one to see if they can recite the entire phrase or sentence without looking. 9. The more flawlessly the text is recited, the better it will be retained. 10. Test your child before they return to school. All Glory Be To God Alone! 6
