2 2 Texts: Jesus Death and Resurrection Foretold Again Matthew 17:22, 23, And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men. And they shall kill him, and the third day he shall be raised again. And they were exceeding sorry. Mark 9:30-32, And they departed thence, and passed through Galilee; and he would not that any man should know it. For he taught his disciples, and said unto them, The Son of man is delivered into the hands of men, and they shall kill him; and after that he is killed, he shall rise the third day. But they understood not that saying, and were afraid to ask him. Luke 9:44, 45, Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying. Commentary: I. Jesus and his disciples left the place where, following the transfiguration, the evil spirit had been cast out of the deaf, speechless, and convulsive boy. They then passed through Galilee. A. Jesus did not want anyone to know where they were. B. Jesus wanted to spend this quiet time to teach the disciples. C. Jesus told the disciples to listen carefully to what he was telling them.

3 3 D. We also must listen very carefully to all Jesus says to us in the scriptures. II. When Jesus and the apostles abode, were together in Galilee, Jesus told them that... A. He would be betrayed into the hands/control of men. B. The men into whose hands he would be betrayed would kill him. C. On the third day he (Jesus) would be raised to life. III. When the disciples heard this they were filled with grief. A. However, the disciples did not understand fully what Jesus meant by what he said about his death and resurrection. B. The disciples were afraid to ask Jesus to explain his statements about his betrayal, death and resurrection. C. We also cannot fathom the full implications of God in Christ dying for the sins of the whole sinful world. D. Only after the events of Calvary and the resurrection did the disciples make the connection between what Jesus said and what had happened. E. Evidently it was not at this time God s will that the disciples understand fully about the crucifixion because it was concealed from them.

4 4 F. Also, the subject may have simply been too difficult for these disciples to understand at that time. III. Matthew recorded Jesus telling of his coming death three different times. A. Matthew 16:21, From that time forth began Jesus to show unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day. B. Matthew 17:22, And while they abode in Galilee, Jesus said unto them, The Son of man shall be betrayed into the hands of men. C.
