1 Our Saviour s Parish National Catholic Church of the PNCC Parafia Naszego Zbawiciela Polskiego Narodowego Kościoła Katolickiego Rev. Henryk Wos, Pastor WEEKLY BULLETIN - Year B 2015 November 8h - XXXII Sunday in Ordinary Time Mass in Contemporary Rite -Page 63 (Jesus said) "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood." Mark 12:43-44 Our Saviour's Parish Polish National Catholic Church 500 Smithfield Road Woonsocket, RI Phone: Website:

2 1 st Reading: 1 Kings 17:10-16 In those days, Elijah the prophet went to Zarephath. As he arrived at the entrance of the city, a widow was gathering sticks there; he called out to her, "Please bring me a small cupful of water to drink." She left to get it, and he called out after her, "Please bring along a bit of bread." She answered, "As the LORD, your God, lives, I have nothing baked; there is only a handful of flour in my jar and a little oil in my jug. Just now I was collecting a couple of sticks, to go in and prepare something for myself and my son; when we have eaten it, we shall die." Elijah said to her, "Do not be afraid. Go and do as you propose. But first make me a little cake and bring it to me. Then you can prepare something for yourself and your son. For the LORD, the God of Israel, says, 'The jar of flour shall not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, until the day when the LORD sends rain upon the earth.'" She left and did as Elijah had said. She was able to eat for a year, and he and her son as well; the jar of flour did not go empty, nor the jug of oil run dry, as the LORD had foretold through Elijah. Responsorial Psalm: PS 146:7, 8-9, 9-10 R. Praise the Lord, my soul! The LORD keeps faith forever, secures justice for the oppressed, gives food to the hungry. The LORD sets captives free. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! The LORD gives sight to the blind. The LORD raises up those who were bowed down; the LORD loves the just. The LORD protects strangers. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! The fatherless and the widow he sustains, but the way of the wicked he thwarts. The LORD shall reign forever; your God, O Zion, through all generations. Alleluia. R. Praise the Lord, my soul! 2 nd Reading: Hebrew 9:24-28 Christ did not enter into a sanctuary made by hands, a copy of the true one, but heaven itself, that he might now appear before God on our behalf. Not that he might offer himself repeatedly, as the high priest enters each year into the sanctuary with blood that is not his own; if that were so,

3 he would have had to suffer repeatedly from the foundation of the world. But now once for all he has appeared at the end of the ages to take away sin by his sacrifice. Just as it is appointed that human beings die once, and after this the judgment, so also Christ, offered once to take away the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to take away sin but to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him. Gospel: Mark 12:38-44 R. Alleluia, alleluia. Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. R. Alleluia, alleluia. +In the course of his teaching Jesus said to the crowds, "Beware of the scribes, who like to go around in long robes and accept greetings in the marketplaces, seats of honor in synagogues, and places of honor at banquets. They devour the houses of widows and, as a pretext recite lengthy prayers. They will receive a very severe condemnation." He sat down opposite the treasury and observed how the crowd put money into the treasury. Many rich people put in large sums. A poor widow also came and put in two small coins worth a few cents. Calling his disciples to himself, he said to them, "Amen, I say to you, this poor widow put in more than all the other contributors to the treasury. For they have all contributed from their surplus wealth, but she, from her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole livelihood." For Reflection: I enjoy taking walks in the neighborhood. I usually go on the other side of the street, sometimes by myself praying rosary along the way, sometimes with kids just enjoying of being with them. Sometimes on my walk, I will find a coin in the street. If it is a penny, I might not even bother stop to pick it up. After all, a penny isn't worth much. If I find some other coin that is worth more than a penny, I will probably stop, pick it up and put it in my pocket. If I am lucky enough to find a dollar, do you think I would stop and pick it up? You know I would! Everybody would! I know -one dollar cannot change my financial position for better, but it could be a good beginning. Today I have a small coin purse with me. How much money, do you think, is in it? It is exactly fifty-seven cents. Well, that isn't much money, and I cannot buy a lot with it. But this morning I want to share with you the story of a little girl named Hattie and how her gift of fifty-seven cents helped to build a great church.

4 One Sunday morning, the pastor of a church went outside to find a group of children who were unable to get in to go to Sunday School because the building was too crowded. One of those children was a six year -old named Hattie. When the pastor saw her, he lifted her up in his arms, put her up on his shoulder, and carried her into the church where he found a place for her to sit in the Sunday School class. The next morning as he walked to church, the pastor saw Hattie again and stopped to talk to her. He told her that he hoped that some day the church would be able to build a building that was large enough so that there would be room for all the children who wanted to attend. Two years later, little Hattie died and the pastor was asked to preach the funeral service. After the service, Hattie's mother handed the pastor a small purse containing fifty-seven cents. She told him that Hattie had been saving her pennies to help the church build a new Sunday School building. The pastor took the fifty-seven cents back to his church and told the people about the little girl who had been saving her pennies to help them build a new Sunday School building. The people were so inspired by Hattie's gift, that they gave faithfully until they built a wonderful new building with plenty of room for all of the children who wanted to attend. I am sure that Jesus would say that Hattie gave more than anyone to build this great church. She gave all that she had. That s why in today s gospel Jesus praised a poor widow who put in the offering box two small coins worth a few cents. Even if her offering was such small, in the eyes of Jesus she has given more than all the others before her. For they have given a tiny part of their surplus, but she, poor as she was, has given everything she had. And she has given with a generous and thankful heart. My Friends! When we give our offerings of money or time or talent to God, he doesn t compare our offerings to those of other people. Some of us have more time or more money than others to begin with. God looks at what we have to start with, and God looks at the attitude we have about giving. When we give with a generous and thankful heart, God is pleased with us and happy. I am glad that God doesn't judge us by how much money we have, aren't you? Today I am going to give each of you a penny from my purse. That penny is to serve as a reminder to you that in Jesus' eyes, you are just as important as someone with a million dollars. I hope it will also serve as a reminder to all of us that everything we have is a gift from God and that we should give back to God and other people who are in need with a cheerful heart. God bless Fr. Henryk Wos-Pastor Note: The story of Hattie is taken from a sermon of Russell H. Conwell.
