Jesus Calms the Storm Lesson 7 Bible Point Jesus can do anything. Bible Verse With God everything is possible (Matthew 19:26b). Growing Closer to Jesus Children will n discover that Jesus has power over nature, n learn that Jesus helped the disciples when they were afraid, n encourage Pockets to tell Jesus her fears, and n understand that Jesus protects them. Teacher Enrichment Bible Basis n Jesus calms the storm. Mark 4:35-41 Jesus suggestion to go to the other side of the Sea of Galilee sounds to us like a simple procedure. However, several factors made such a journey difficult. First, few inhabitants of the west side of Galilee ever ventured to the east side. That side was inhabited mostly by non-jews who worshipped a variety of gods, which naturally made God-fearing Jews uncomfortable. Second, the boats Jesus disciples used were small fishing boats. They were not intended for traversing the middle of the lake, which was 13 miles long and 8 miles wide. And finally, the geography surrounding the lake made it susceptible to sudden storms that could turn a calm lake into a violent sea. Many lives were at stake when a furious storm arose. However, many of the disciples were experienced fishermen and expert sailors, so one might expect that they would handle things on their own. The fact that they turned to Jesus for help likely meant that they were at the end of their means they had tried everything they knew to combat the storm and had failed. When Jesus awoke, he immediately demonstrated that he was in control. There was no hint of worry or concern in his words. He simply said, Quiet! He then said, Be still, a term which literally means muzzle yourself and continue to be silent. Imagine the disciples amazement when the raging waves instantly became calm. Even today, with our advanced technology, we don t have any control over the weather and can t even forecast it very accurately. In Jesus day, controlling the weather was known strictly as the domain of God. In the instant the storm ceased, the disciples began to realize more fully who Jesus was. Never before had he done anything of this magnitude. The disciples terrified response is understandable when we consider God s power and purity in light of our own weakness and imperfection. But the disciples came to learn that no matter how bad a situation seemed, the first thing they needed to do was turn to Jesus. Prayer Read Romans 15:13. How are joy and peace related to your trust in God? Pray: Dear God, as you have entrusted these children to my care, help me trust you with Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6 93

Welcome Time Jesus Calms the Storm SUPPLIES: Perfect Present Name Tags (p. 22), markers, safety pins or tape Bend down and make eye contact with children as they arrive. Greet each child individually with an enthusiastic smile. Thank each child for coming to class today. As children arrive, ask them how they used last week s lesson. Use questions such as Who can do anything? and In what ways did you ask Jesus to help you last week? Say: Today we re going to learn that Jesus can do anything. Hand out the present name tags children made during Lesson 1, and help children attach name tags to their clothing. If any of the name tags were damaged or if children weren t in class that week, have children make new name tags using the photocopiable patterns. Direct children to the Let s Get Started activities you ve set up. Let s Get Started Set up one or more of the following activities for children to do as they arrive. After you greet each child, invite him or her to choose an activity. Circulate among the children to offer help as needed and to direct their conversation toward today s lesson. Ask questions such as When was a time you felt afraid? What did you do? or Is there someone who can do anything? n Option 1: Boat Float SUPPLIES: sponges, water, scissors, washtub, crayons, toothpicks, tape, construction paper scraps, newspaper Before this activity, cut a small sponge square for each child. Set construction paper scraps, scissors, crayons, sponge squares, and toothpicks on a table. Let children create colorful sails for their sponge boats by cutting triangular or rectangular pieces of construction paper and decorating them with crayons. Tape the finished sails to the toothpicks. Show children how to stick a toothpick in the center of each square sponge to create a sail. Spread newspaper or an old plastic tablecloth on the floor, and set a washtub filled with water on it. Let children sail their boats on the water. Encourage them to blow on the sails and race their boats across the waves. Tell children they re going to hear a story today about Jesus and some large waves. Point out that Jesus can do anything and even controls the wind and water. n Option 2: Blowing Breezes SUPPLIES: cotton balls, paper Set paper and cotton balls on a table. Challenge children to think of different ways to blow the cotton balls across the table or floor. For example, children could roll the paper to make straws to blow through or fold the paper to create fans. As children work, ask questions such as Have you ever been afraid of the wind or a storm? and Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6 95

Lesson 7 Can you stop the wind from blowing? Tell children that because anything, he can do amazing things with the wind and weather. Jesus can do n Option 3: Oceans of Fun SUPPLIES: tape, blue and green crepe paper streamers Set out tape, chopsticks, and 4-foot lengths of blue and green crepe paper streamers. Have each child tape one or two streamers to the end of a chopstick. Then instruct children to create a swirling, wavy ocean by standing in a circle and waving their streamer sticks near waist level. Be sure children stand at least 3 feet apart so no one gets poked. Explain that during a storm, Jesus friends learned that Jesus can do anything. After this activity, remove the streamers, and return the chopsticks to the Learning Lab box. After everyone has arrived and you re ready to move on to the Bible Story Time, encourage the children to finish what they re doing and get ready to clean up. n Pick Up Our Toys SUPPLIES: CD player Lead children in singing Pick Up Our Toys (track 2) with the track 2 CD to the tune of Skip to My Lou. Encourage children to sing along as they help clean up the room. If you want to include the names of all the children in the class, sing the song without the CD, and repeat the naming section. If you choose to use the CD, vary the names you use each week. We will pick up our toys. We will pick up our toys. We will pick up our toys, And put them all away. (Repeat.) There s [name] picking up toys. There s [name] picking up toys. There s [name] picking up toys, Putting them all away. Bible Story Time n Setting the Stage SUPPLIES: large plastic jar and lid, water, blue and green food coloring, liquid dish soap Tell the children that you ll clap your hands to get their attention. Explain that when you clap, the children are to stop what they re doing, raise their hands, and focus on you. Encourage children to respond quickly so you ll have time for all the fun activities you ve planned. Before this activity, fill a large, clear plastic jar three-quarters full of water. Add three drops each of blue and green food coloring. Then add two drops of liquid dish soap. Replace the jar lid tightly. Practice swirling the storm clouds to make a stormat-sea jar. To do this, set the jar on a flat surface, such as the floor or a table top. 96 Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6

Jesus Calms the Storm Quickly rotate the jar in a circular motion on the flat surface until a funnel is created. Then stop rotating the jar and watch as the storm clouds swirl and the waves splash. Practice making a storm-at-sea a few times before you show children how to do it. Sit with the children in a circle on the floor. Begin swirling the storm-at-sea jar. Be sure children can see the water as it swirls and makes a whirlpool. Say: I ll pass the storm-at-sea jar around, and you can make a storm while you tell about a time a storm or big wind frightened you. Pass the storm-at-sea jar around the circle until each child has had a turn to swirl the jar and share his or her experience. Then ask: What would it be like if we could stop scary storms or make the wind be still? (It would be neat; it would be strange to have that power; it would help people stay safe.) Say: We can t control the wind and the waves. Do you think anyone is able to do that? Pause for ideas. We don t have control over the wind and the sea, but Jesus does. Jesus can do anything. Today we ll hear a story about another exciting miracle Jesus performed. Ask: Who remembers what a miracle is? (It s something only Jesus can do; it s like doing an impossible trick, but Jesus can do it anyway; it shows how strong God is.) Swirl the jar and say: When storms are crashing and the wind is blowing, isn t it good that we can trust Jesus to help us not be afraid? We know that Jesus is bigger than any storm because Jesus can do anything. n Bible Song and Prayer Time SUPPLIES: Bible, construction paper, scissors, CD player, basket or box Before class, make surprise cards for this activity by cutting track 3 construction paper into 2x6-inch slips. Prepare a surprise card for each child, plus a few extras for visitors. Fold the cards in half, and stamp the boat stamp inside one of the surprise cards. Place a bookmark at Mark 4:35-41 in the Bible you ll be using. Have children sit in a circle. Say: Now it s time to choose someone to be the Bible person. The Bible person will bring me the Bible marked with our Bible story. Each of you will get a chance to be the Bible person. Before I choose today s Bible person, let s sing our Bible song. As we sing, I ll hand out surprise cards. Don t look inside your surprise card until the song is over. Lead children in singing Read God s Book (track 3) with the CD to the tune of The Muffin Man. As you sing, hand out the folded surprise cards. Now it s time to read God s book, Read God s book, read God s book. Now it s time to read God s book. Let s hear a Bible story. (Repeat 3x.) After the song, say: You may look inside your surprise cards. The person who has the boat stamped inside his or her card will be our Bible person for today. Choose children to be the surprisecard collector, the Bible replacer (to put the Bible away), and the cheerleader. Just be sure to keep track of who fills your roles each week so each child gets a chance to feel special. Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6 97

Lesson 7 Identify the Bible person. Ask the Bible person to bring you the Bible. Lead the class in clapping for the Bible person, cheering, and making fun applause sound effects by slapping your thighs with your palms. Help the Bible person open the Bible to the marked place, and show children where your story comes from. Then have the Bible person sit down. Say: [Name] was our special Bible person today. Each week, we ll have only one special Bible person, but each one of you is a special part of our class! Today we re all learning that Jesus can do anything. Let s say a special prayer now and ask God to help us learn that Jesus can help us when we re afraid. I ll pass around this basket. When the basket comes to you, put your surprise card in it and say, God, help me trust Jesus to calm my fears. Have a child pass around the basket or box. After your helper has collected everyone s surprise card, set the basket aside, and pick up the Bible. Lead the children in this prayer: God, thank you for the Bible and for all the stories in it. Teach us today that Jesus can do anything. In Jesus name, amen. n Hear and Tell the Bible Story SUPPLIES: Bible, CD player, umbrella Bring out the Bible Big Book: Jesus Miracles tracks 8 & 9 and an umbrella. Have children gather around you in a circle on the floor. Open the umbrella, and hold it over your head. Ask: Who can tell me what I m holding over my head and what it s good for? (It s an umbrella; it s good for keeping you dry; it protects you from the rain or sun.) Can an umbrella protect you against everything? Explain. (No, just against rain or sun; no, it can get turned inside out in the wind.) Say: Only Jesus can protect us against everything. And because Jesus can do anything, we can trust him to take care of us and keep us safe. Sometimes Jesus even makes a miracle happen! Ask: Who can tell about Jesus first miracle when he turned water into wine? Have volunteers recount the Bible story from last week. Then show them your Bible, open to the book of Mark. Say: Our Bible story this week comes from the book of Mark. Our Bible Big Book shows us pictures of our Bible story. Our story is about another of Jesus miracles, and you can help me tell the story. When you hear the word wind, blow like the wind. And when you hear the word waves, rock back and forth and up and down like waves at sea. Open the Bible Big Book to page 2. Fold the Bible Big Book back so page 2 is the only page children see. Turn on the CD, and listen to Jesus Miracles, Part 1 (track 9), as you look at the pictures on pages 2 through 4 in the Bible Big Book. Turn the pages at the sound of the bell. Close the Bible Big Book, and turn off the CD. Ask: What made the disciples afraid? (They were afraid they d drown; they were afraid of the storm.) 98 Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6

Jesus Calms the Storm Why didn t the disciples tell the storm to stop? (They couldn t; we can t control the weather.) Do you think the disciples were wise to ask Jesus to help? Explain. (Yes, because Jesus can do anything; yes, because Jesus is strong enough to stop a storm.) Do you think anyone other than Jesus could have helped the disciples? Why or why not? (No, because only Jesus can do miracles; no, there s no one with the power of Jesus.) Say: Jesus calmed the sea. Jesus stopped the wind. He took away the disciples fear and protected them. No one else could ve helped as Jesus did. This reminds me of our Bible verse from Matthew 19:26. This verse says, With God everything is possible. Show children the verse in the Bible. Let s say this verse and use motions to help us remember the words. Lead children in saying Matthew 19:26b with these motions: With God (point up) everything (spread both hands away from self in a sweeping motion) is possible (give a two-thumbs-up signal). Repeat several times until children can say the verse easily. Hold up the umbrella. Say: God s protection is like a big umbrella, only better! He s always there to care for and protect us when we re afraid just as he did for the disciples on the stormy sea. Jesus can do miracles like calming the stormy sea because Jesus can do anything! Lead children in singing Jesus Can Do Anything (track 8) with the CD to the tune of Jesus Loves Me. Who can chase my fears away? Who can turn the night to day? Who can calm the stormy sea? Who can grow a mighty tree? (Repeat.) Jesus can do anything. Jesus can do anything. Jesus can do anything. There s nothing he can t do! n Do the Bible Story SUPPLIES: white paper, crayons, blue construction paper, scissors, glue Before class, make one copy of the tiger stripes picture from the Learning Lab for each child. The photocopy will be black and gray. Create a sample flip-over picture using the original tiger stripes picture and following the steps listed in this activity. In class, gather children around the work area. Show the tiger stripe side of your flip-over picture, and give each child a photocopy of the picture. Ask: What does a stormy sky look like? (Dark with big clouds and lightning; scary.) What do you do if you are outside and suddenly the sky becomes stormy? (I get scared; I run home; I hide inside a building so I don t get wet.) Say: This picture reminds me of our Bible story. The disciples were out on the lake in their boat with Jesus. Suddenly, the sky turned dark and Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6 99

Lesson 7 stormy. The winds began to blow and turned the calm water into big waves. Let s make a picture of the stormy sky and waves. Have kids put their pictures in front of them so the stripes are going up and down. Let children color the lines at the top to look like a stormy sky. Give each child half a sheet of blue construction paper, cut lengthwise. Help children cut waves across one long side and then glue the waves along the bottom edge of their storm picture. Praise the children s work as they finish. Say: That stormy scene must have been very scary for the disciples. Imagine how they felt when those big waves rocked their little boat. And Jesus was asleep! Show me what the disciples faces might have looked like when that happened. Pause for children to make faces. Ask: What did the disciples do then? (They got scared; they woke up Jesus.) What did Jesus do then? (He told the disciples not to be afraid; he stopped the storm.) How come Jesus could stop the storm? (Because he s powerful; because Jesus can do anything.) Say: The disciples were afraid, but they called for help, and Jesus told the storm to stop. Jesus is more powerful than any storm, no matter how big. Jesus can do anything! Let s make new pictures to show what Jesus did. Have kids flip their pictures over and draw a calm sky and still water. Let each child stamp the Sailing with Jesus boat stamp in the middle of his or her picture to show the boat on the quiet lake. Have children find partners and take turns retelling the story to one another using their flip-over pictures. You ll be amazed to discover how much your children have learned as they share the lesson with Pockets. Even children who are shy around adults will open up to Pockets. For a change of pace, try one of the following ideas for bringing Pockets into other parts of the lesson. Have Pockets greet children as they arrive. Have children tell the Bible story to Pockets. Have Pockets ask questions to draw out shy children. Have Pockets encourage disruptive children to quiet down. Use Pockets to snuggle or hug children. Then say: The disciples trusted Jesus to take care of them. We can trust Jesus to take care of us, too. It's amazing to know that Jesus, the most powerful person of all, cares about our fears and wants to be our friend. Jesus wants to be a friend to you, and you, and you. Say this as you point to each child in your class. Let s take time to thank Jesus for loving us so much and for being our friend. Pray: Dear Jesus, you are the most powerful of all, and you can do anything. Thank you that you love us. Thank you that you are our friend. Help us to ask you for help when we are afraid. In your name, amen. Closing n Have No Fear SUPPLIES: small scarf, umbrella Have children sit in a circle. Bring out Pockets the Kangaroo, and place a small scarf over her head. Set the umbrella beside you. Go through the following script. After you finish the script, put Pockets away and out of sight. 100 Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6

Jesus Calms the Storm Teacher: Pockets: Teacher: Pockets: Teacher: Pockets: Teacher: Pockets: Teacher: Pockets: Teacher: Pockets: Hi, Pockets! Why are you hiding under that scarf? Cuz if I hide under here, then I won t be scared. Scared of what, Pockets? Of lots of things! Please come out, Pockets. You can tell us what you re scared of and then hide again if you really want to. Well all right. I guess I can tell you. (Take her scarf off.) I m afraid of spiders and thunder and lightning and snakes and lions and broccoli and Broccoli? Why are you afraid of broccoli, Pockets? Because every time I eat broccoli, it s so yummy that I eat too much and get a tummy ache! It sounds as if you re scared of quite a few things, Pockets. But hiding under a scarf won t help. Would you like to learn about someone who can always protect you? (Nodding) Yes! Yes! (Open the umbrella and hold it over Pockets.) That s an umbrella! That s not a person! Yes, but this umbrella reminds us that Jesus covers and protects us all the time. We don t have to be afraid of anything because Jesus can do anything. Children, let s share how Jesus calmed the storm and helped the frightened disciples. Tell a part of the story or say the Bible Point as we pass the umbrella around the circle. (Continue until the Bible story has been retold and each child has had a turn to help tell a story portion.) I like that story! If Jesus can calm the sea and control the wind, I think he can even help me with broccoli! Thanks for helping me learn that Jesus can do anything! Goodbye! (Pockets waves.) Permission to photocopy this script from Group s Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, granted for local church use. Copyright Group Publishing, Inc., 1515 Cascade Avenue, Loveland, CO group.com n Raise Your Praise SUPPLIES: CD player, inflated balloons Say: You did a great job of sharing with Pockets! Now let s track 10 have some fun. Get with a partner, and I ll hand you a balloon. Hand each pair of children an inflated balloon. As you bop the balloon back and forth, tell each other one thing you re afraid of that Jesus can protect you from. When I flip the lights, join with another pair, and each tell one way Jesus helps you not be fearful. Allow pairs a few moments to share; then flip the lights for them to get into foursomes. After a minute or so, flip the lights one more time, and have children join together in a large circle. Continue bopping all the balloons. Have the children join WARNING: CHOKING HAZARD Be sure to pick up pieces of any broken balloons and dispose of them immediately. Balloons may contain latex. Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6 101

Lesson 7 you as you call out the Bible Point three times: Jesus can do anything! Jesus can do anything! Jesus can do anything! Clap your hands to get children s attention. When children are quiet, say: Jesus always cares for us and protects us. Doesn t that make you feel like singing? Set your balloons down, and let s sing Yes, He Can to celebrate how good it is to know that Jesus can do anything! Before you sing the song, practice the accompanying motions as you say the words a few times. When children are familiar with the words and actions, lead them in singing Yes, He Can (track 10) with the CD to the tune of London Bridge. Jesus can do anything! (Hop forward; then hop backward.) Yes, he can! Clap your hands! (Clap three times.) Jesus can do anything! (Hop forward; then hop backward.) Yes, Jesus can! (Twirl around and clap.) Jesus can do miracles! (Hop forward; then hop backward.) Yes, he can! Clap your hands! (Clap three times.) Jesus can do miracles! (Hop forward; then hop backward.) Yes, Jesus can! (Twirl around and clap.) Sit with children in a circle on the floor. Say: Let s join hands and pray. Dear God, thank you for sending Jesus to protect us. We know that Jesus can do anything and that we can trust him to take care of our fears. Thank you, God, for loving us so much. We love you, too. In Jesus name, amen. Collect name tags for next week s use, and remind children to take home any crafts they made today. Growing closer to Jesus extends beyond the classroom. Photocopy the Today I Learned handout (at the end of this lesson) for this week, and send it home with your children. Encourage parents to use the handout to plan meaningful family activities to reinforce this week s topic. 102 Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6

Jesus Calms the Storm For Extra Time If you have a long class time or want to add additional elements to your lesson, try one of the following activities. n Lively Learning: Don t Rock the Boat Have children form two lines at one end of the room. Give the first person in each line a spoon with the rounded end full of dry beans. Say: In the Bible story, a storm really rocked the disciples boat. Pretend the beans in your spoon are the disciples in their little boat. Carry your pretend boat to the other side of the room, touch the wall, and carry the boat back. Be careful not to rock the boat and spill any disciples, or you ll have to start again! When you get back to your line, hand the spoon to the next person. As children play, remind them that nothing s too hard for Jesus because Jesus can do anything. n Make to Take: Sea-in-a-Jar n Treat to Eat: The Disciples Boat Let children make their own Sea of Galilee to take home and enjoy. You ll need water, blue or green food coloring, liquid dish soap, and a small container with a lid, such as a baby-food jar, for each child. Let children fill the containers about three-quarters full of water and then add a few drops of food coloring and dish soap. Tell them to replace the lid and to be sure it s on tightly. You might want to add a bead of glue along the inside of the rim. As children have fun swirling their sea-in-a-jars, remind them that Jesus calmed the Sea of Galilee. Point out again the fact that Jesus can do anything, and only Jesus can make a miracle happen. Have oceans of fun making these delicious snacks. Have children clean their hands with baby wipes or at a nearby sink. Hand each child a small banana and 13 chocolate chips or raisins. Place plastic spoons and a napkin for each child on a table. Show children how to peel away one strip of the banana peel. Have each child scoop out a little of the center portion of the banana and then put the 13 chocolate chips or raisins in the hollow. As children work, ask questions such as Who were the 13 people riding in the boat? and What was Jesus doing when the storm came up? Let the children tell about the Bible story as they enjoy their edible boats. n Story Picture: Jesus Calms the Storm Give each child a photocopy of the Today I Learned handout. Cover the table with newspapers for easy cleanup. Set out cotton balls, glue sticks, paint sponges, crayons, and watercolors. Have children glue cotton balls to the picture for clouds and sponge-paint waves on the sea. Then have each child draw a few frightened disciples in the boat. As they work, ask children to share about how Jesus takes care of them. Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K, Ages 5 & 6 103

Today your child learned that Jesus can do anything. Children learned that Jesus calmed a raging storm at sea. They talked about how Jesus helps them when they re afraid. Verse to Learn With God everything is possible (Matthew 19:26b). Ask Me... l What happened with Jesus and the disciples during the storm at sea? l How does Jesus help you when you re afraid? l How can our family ask for Jesus help? Family Fun l Let your child help make a delicious breakfast to share with the family. Serve triangular toast boats, rippling bacon waves, and fluffy scrambled-egg clouds. During your meal together, share the story of Jesus calming the sea. Then close with a family prayer asking Jesus to calm your family for the coming day. Jesus Calms the Storm (Mark 4:35-41) Jesus can do anything. Lesson Permission to photocopy this handout from Group s Hands-On Bible Curriculum Pre-K & K granted for local church use.
