There are different ways of serving God, but it is the same God who is served. Each one is given a gift by the same Spirit, to use for the common good. My sister in faith, do you believe that you are truly called by God and the Church to the life and work of ministry in the name of Jesus Christ? In scripture, ministers are exhorted to tend the flock of God committed to their care, not by constraint but willingly, not for selfish gain but eagerly, not by domineering over those in their charge but by example. Will you endeavor to care for the people of God: nourishing, teaching and encouraging them; giving direction to the life of the congregation; counseling the troubled; declaring God s forgiveness of sin; and proclaiming victory over death?

5 Kendra: I will, with the help of God. The Spirit of God led Jesus to preach the good news to the poor, proclaiming release to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, setting at liberty the oppressed, and proclaiming the time of God s good favor. Will you endeavor to lead the people of God in their obedience to the mission of the Church: guiding their concern for justice, peace and freedom for all people and taking a responsible place in the governance of the Church and in service to the World? Kendra: I will, with the help of God. In the first epistle of John it is written, If one claims to live in God, they must live like Jesus. Will you endeavor to conduct yourself so that your life is shaped by Jesus Christ, who took the form of a servant for our sake; and will you, with the help of the Holy Spirit, continually rekindle the gift of God that is in you to make known to all people the gospel of the grace of God? Kendra: I will, with the help of God. All: May God who has given you the will to do these things give you the grace to perform them. Kendra, God who has called you is faithful and will not fail. You have heard the covenant of your sister. Will you as members of God s Church affirm this call, join in covenant and accept Kendra as an ordained minister of the Gospel? Kendra, we accept you as one called to public servant leadership in the Church and affirm the decision that you be ordained. We are sinful, broken, vulnerable people who need as much care as anyone we care for. The mystery of ministry is that we have been chosen to make our own limited and very conditional love the gateway for the unlimited and unconditional love of God. 7 The soloists are Kyle Matthews and Emma Zyriek. The acolytes are Carter Fayssoux and Emma Good. The guest proclaimer today is the Reverend Rebecca Hartzog. Becky, a native of Alabama, is a graduate of Samford University and earned her Master of Divinity degree from a Baptist seminary which no longer exists in its former moderate and open theological persuasion. She has served on church staffs in Alabama, Florida, Kentucky and North Carolina. She has also served as a Baptist campus minister on different campuses in Georgia for twelve years prior to going to Wake Forest University as the associate chaplain and Baptist campus minister in July In 2011, her responsibilities as Baptist Campus Minister were transferred to another minister. Some of Becky s responsibilities now include working with the Poteat scholars (North Carolina Baptist students), working with students of all faiths and serving as the liaison between the Office of the Chaplain and the Christian Campus Ministries staff. Becky loves walking with students on their spiritual journeys during their college years, listening to them, sometimes challenging them, and ministering to them in times of crisis. She also seeks to support faculty and staff whenever and wherever possible. Becky is always seeking to do less and be more. Offering special blessings upon Kendra today are Tony McDade, chair of Kendra s Ordination Council; Kenny Goodson, Kendra s father; Mason Garner, a member of the Youth Ministry; Janice Johnson, a member of Kendra s Ordination Council; and Chris Plating, Kendra s husband. Emma Zyriek, a student at Furman University, serves as a choral scholar in our Sanctuary Choir. The deacon assisting in worship today is Whitney Hodges. Whitney serves on the Missions Committee and is a teacher in the Five-year-old Sunday School Class. She and her husband, Matthew Burns, are members of the Koinonia Class and have three children: Beck, Ella and Nora. The rose placed on the baptistry today is in honor of Marshall Thomas Maddox, son of Braxton and Caroline Maddox, born January 7, The flowers in the Sanctuary today are given in loving memory of Lois B. Green by her family. The flowers in the Narthex are given in celebration of Kendra s ordination by her friends from Harvard Divinity School.
