Praying for Rain Ask ye of the Lord Rain and He will send Rain! Paraphrase of Zech. 10:1 Promises from the Bible to Claim in Prayer: If my people, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. 2 Chron. 7:14 Ask ye of the LORD rain in the time of the latter rain; so the LORD shall make bright clouds, and give them showers of rain, to every one grass in the field. Zech. 10:1 If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him? Luke 11:13 If two of you shall AGREE on earth as touching any thing that they shall ask, IT SHALL BE DONE for them of my father which is in Heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I in the midst of them. Matt. 18:19-20 And this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask ANYTHING according to HIS WILL, He heareth us. I John 5:14 Blow ye the trumpet in Zion, and sound an alarm in my holy mountain: let all the inhabitants of the land tremble: for the day of the LORD cometh, for it is nigh at hand Therefore also now, saith the LORD, turn ye even to me with all your heart, and with fasting, and with weeping, and with mourning: And rend your heart, and not your garments, and turn unto the LORD your God: for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness, and repenteth him of the evil. Who knoweth if he will return and repent, and leave a blessing behind him; even a meat offering and a drink offering unto the LORD your God? Blow the trumpet in Zion, sanctify a fast, call a solemn assembly: Gather the people, sanctify the congregation, assemble the elders, gather the children, and those that suck the breasts: let the bridegroom go forth of his chamber, and the bride out of her closet. Let the priests, the ministers of the LORD, weep between the porch and the altar, and let them say, Spare thy people, O LORD, and give not thine heritage to reproach, that the heathen should rule over them: wherefore should they say among the people, Where is their God? Then will the LORD be jealous for his land, and pity his people. Yea, the LORD will answer and say unto his people, Behold, I will send you corn, and wine, and oil, and ye shall be satisfied therewith: and I will no more make you a reproach among the heathen Fear not, O land; be glad and rejoice: FOR THE LORD WILL DO GREAT THINGS. Joel 1:1,12,13-19,21 1
And ALL things, whatsoever ye shall ask in prayer, BELIEVING ye shall receive. Matt. 21:22 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. Acts 1:8 In whom ye also are builded together for an habitation of God through the Spirit. Eph. 2:22 For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. Isa. 57:15 Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ: According as he hath chosen us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and without blame before him in love: Having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ to himself, according to the good pleasure of his will, To the praise of the glory of his grace, wherein he hath made us accepted in the beloved. In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace. Eph. 1:3-7 Ye have not because ye ask not Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name. Ask and ye SHALL receive, that your joy may be full. James 4:2, John 16:24 If ye ABIDE in me and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it SHALL be done unto you! John 15:7 With men this is impossible, but not with God, for with God ALL THINGS are possible Mark 10:27 What things, soever ye desire, when ye pray, BELIEVE that receive them and ye shall have them. Mk. 11:24 According to your FAITH be it unto you! Matt. 9:29 Confess your faults one to another and pray one for another. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man AVAILETH much. James 5:16 For we wrestle NOT against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the WHOLE armor of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all to stand Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all PERSEVERENCE and supplication for all saints. Eph. 6:12,13,18 Blessed are they that have not seen and yet have BELIEVED. John 20:29 For the eyes of the Lord run to and fro throughout the earth to show himself STRONG in behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward you. 2 Chron. 16:9 2
Now unto Him that is able to do exceedingly abundantly ABOVE all that we ask or think, according to the POWER [His power] that worketh in us. Eph. 3:20 Ah Lord God, behold thou hast made the Heaven and the Earth by thy great power and stretched out thine arm, and there is NOTHING too hard for you! Jer. 32:17 Is ANYTHING too hard for the Lord? Gen. 18:14 Ask and it SHALL be given you, seek and ye SHALL find, knock and the door SHALL be opened. Matt. 7:7 And we are his witnesses of these things; and so is also the Holy Ghost, whom God hath given to them that obey him. Acts 5:32 Promises from Inspiration to Claim in Prayer: The descent of the Holy Spirit upon the church is looked forward to as in the future; but it is the privilege of the church to have it now. Seek for it, pray for it, believe for it. We must have it, and Heaven is waiting to bestow it. The Review and Herald, March 19, Just as long as the church is satisfied with small things, it is disqualified to receive the great things of God. Home Missionary, November 1, 1893 par. 25 A chain of earnest, praying believers should encircle the world to pray for the Holy Spirit. Review and Herald, January 3, 1907 The Latter Rain Let Christians ask in faith for the promised blessing, and it will come. The outpouring of the Spirit in the days of the apostles was the former rain, and glorious was the result. But the latter rain will be more abundant. The Signs of the Times, February 17, Plead for the Holy Spirit. God stands back of every promise He has made. With your Bible in your hands say, I have done as Thou hast said. I present Thy promise, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Christ Object Lessons, p. 147 When the church awakes to the sense of her holy calling, many more fervent and effective prayers will ascend to heaven for the Holy Spirit to point out the work and duty of God s people regarding the salvation of souls. We have a standing promise that God will draw near to every seeking soul. 1 Selected Messages, p. 116 From the secret place of prayer came the power that shook the world in the Great Reformation. There, with holy calmness, the servants of the Lord set their feet upon the rock of His promises. During the struggle at Augsburg, Luther did not pass a day without devoting three hours at least to prayer, and they were hours selected from those the most favorable to study. Great Controversy, p
Could we see all the activity as it appears before God, we would see that only the work accomplished by much prayer, which is sanctified by the merit of Christ will stand the test of the judgment. Christian Service, p. 263 Will we wrestle with God in prayer? Will we receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit? This is what we need and may have at this time If we will walk humbly with God, God will walk with us. Prayer, p. 87 The greatest blessing that God can give to man is the spirit of earnest prayer. All heaven is open before the man [and woman] of prayer...the ambassadors of Christ will have power with the people after they have, with earnest supplication, come before God. Prayer, p. 83 The Lord is disappointed when His people place a low estimate upon themselves. He desires His chosen heritage to value themselves according to the price He has placed upon them. God wanted them, else He would not have sent His Son on such an expensive errand to redeem them. He has a use for them, and He is well pleased when they make the very highest demands upon Him, that they may glorify His name. They may expect large things if they have faith in His promises. Desire of Ages, p. 668 Only to those who wait humbly upon God, who watch for His guidance and grace, is the Spirit given. The power of God awaits their demand and reception. This promised blessing, claimed by faith, brings all other blessings in its train. It is given according to the riches of the grace of Christ, and He is ready to supply every soul according to the capacity to receive. Desire of Ages, p. 672 The rainbow round about the throne is an assurance that God is true, that in Him is no variableness, neither shadow of turning When we come to him confessing our unworthiness and sin, He has pledged Himself to give heed to our cry. The honor of His throne is staked for the fulfillment of His word unto us. Christ Object Lessons, p. 148 [These miraculous opening the prison doors and other such miracles] were not written merely that we might read and wonder, but that the same faith which wrought in God s servants of old might work in us. In no less marked a manner than He wrought then will He work now wherever there are hearts of faith to be channels of His power. Education, p. 256 Divine grace is needed at the beginning, divine grace at every step of advance, and divine grace alone can complete the work. There is no place for us to rest in a careless attitude We may have had a measure of the Spirit of God, but by prayer and faith we are continually to seek more of the Spirit. Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, p. 507, 508 Our prayers are to be fervent and earnest as were the petitions of the needy friend who asked for the loaves at midnight. The more you ask, the firmer will be your spiritual union. You may come into that place where you will have increased blessings because you have increased faith. God has a heaven full of blessings that He wants to bestow on those who are earnestly seeking for help that the Lord alone can give. Christ Triumphant, p. 54 4
There is no danger that the Lord will neglect the prayers of His people. The danger is that in temptation and trial they will become discouraged, and fail to persevere in prayer. Christ Object Lessons, p. 175 The soul must be barricaded by prayer and study of the Scriptures. Armed with these weapons, Jesus encountered our wily foe on the field of battle, and overcame him. Our High Calling, p. 330 The Lord will more than fulfill the highest expectations of those who put their trust in Him. My Life Today, p. 55 In the whole Satanic force there is not power to overcome one soul who in simple trust casts himself on Christ. He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might He increaseth strength. Isa 40:29 Christ Object Lessons, p. 157 Faith takes God at His word, with or without feeling. It is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen. We can believe our fellowmen, and can we not trust the word of God? When we go to Him for wisdom or grace, we are not to look to ourselves to see if He has given us a special feeling as an assurance that He has fulfilled His word. Feeling is no criterion. Great evils have resulted when Christians have followed feeling. How do I know that Jesus hears my prayers? I know it by His promise. He says He will hear the needy when they cry unto Him, and I believe His word. He has never said to the seed of Jacob, seek ye Me in vain. If we walk in the light, we may come to the throne of grace with holy boldness. We may present the promises of God in living faith, and urge our petitions. Although we are weak, and erring, and unworthy, the Spirit helpeth our infirmities. When we have offered our petition once, we must not then abandon it, but say, as did Jacob when he wrestled all night with the angel, I will not let Thee go, except Thou bless me, and like him we shall prevail. Bible Echo, September 24, 1894, par. 4 True faith lays hold of and claims the promised blessing before it is realized and felt. Early Writings, Prayer and Faith, p. 72 Prayer and Faith will do what no power on earth can accomplish. Ministry of Healing, p. 509 If you want power you may have it; it is waiting your draft upon it. Only believe in God, take Him at His Word, act by Faith, and the blessings will come. Prayer, p. 84 Jacob prevailed because he was persevering and determined. His experience testifies to the power of importunate prayer. It is now that we are to learn this lesson of prevailing prayer, of unyielding faith. The greatest victories to the church of Christ or to the individual Christian are not those that are gained by talent or education, by wealth or the favor of men. They are those victories that are gained in the audience chamber with God, when earnest, agonizing faith lays hold upon the mighty arm of power. Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 203 Invisible armies of light and power attend the meek and lowly ones who believe and claim the promises of God. Christ Object Lessons, p
Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith as a grain of mustard seed, ye shall say unto this mountain, Remove hence to yonder place; and it shall remove; and nothing shall be impossible unto you. Howbeit this kind [referring to the evil spirit that the disciples could not cast out] goeth not out but by prayer and fasting. Matt. 17:20,21 You need not go to the ends of the earth for wisdom, for God is near. It is not the capabilities you now possess or ever will have that will give you success. It is that which the Lord can do for you. We need to have far less confidence in what man can do and far more confidence in what God can do for every believing soul. He longs to have you reach after Him by faith. He longs to have you expect great things from Him. Christ Object Lessons, p. 146 If two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of My Father which is in heaven. Precious promise! Do we believe it? What marvelous results would appear if the united prayers of this company were to ascend to God in living faith! Jesus stands ready to take these petitions and present them to His Father, saying, I know these persons by name. Send answers to their prayers; for I have graven their names on the palms of My hands. Historical Sketches of the Foreign Missions of the Seventh-day Adventists, 152 (1886). It was because Elijah was a man of large faith that God could use him in this grave crisis in the history of Israel. As he prayed, his faith reached out and grasped the promises of Heaven, and he persevered in prayer until his petitions were answered. He did not wait for the full evidence that God had heard him, but was willing to venture all on the slightest token of divine favor. And yet what he was enabled to do under God, all may do in their sphere of activity in God s service Faith such as this is needed in the world today faith that will lay hold on the promises of God s word and refuse to let go until Heaven hears. Prayer, p. 138 I asked the angel why there was no more faith and power in [the Adventist church] He said, Ye let go of the arm of the Lord too soon. Press your petitions to the throne, and hold on by strong faith. The promises are sure. Believe ye receive the things ye ask for, and ye shall have them. I was then pointed to Elijah. He was subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly. His faith endured the trial. Seven times he prayed before the Lord, and at last the cloud was seen. I saw that we had doubted the sure promises, and wounded the Saviour by our lack of faith. Early Writings, p. 73 The power at God s command is limitless. Gospel Workers, p. 60 We have too little faith. We limit the Holy One of Israel. We should be grateful God condescends to use any of us as His instruments. For every earnest prayer put up in faith for anything, answers will be returned. They may not come just as we expected; but they will come not perhaps as we have devised, but at the very time when we need them most. Gospel Workers, p. 92 6
There is no limit to the usefulness of the one who, putting self aside, makes room for the working of the Holy Spirit upon his heart, and lives a life wholly consecrated to God. Christian Service, p. 254 Prayer is a heaven-ordained means of success. Appeals, petitions, entreaties, between man and man move men and act a part in controlling the affairs of nations, but PRAYER MOVES HEAVEN. In Heavenly Places, p. 75 Why is it that we do not receive more from Him who is the source of light and power? We expect too little. Has God lost His love for man? Is not this love still flowing earthward? Has He lost His desire to show Himself strong in behalf of His people? Christ will give us victory in the conflict. Who can doubt this when we know that He laid aside His royal robe and kingly crown, and came to this world in the garb of humanity, that He might stand as man s substitute and surety? We do not value as we should the power and efficacy of prayer. The Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which can not be uttered. God desires us to come to Him in prayer, that He may enlighten our minds. He alone can give clear conceptions of truth. He alone can soften and subdue the heart. He can quicken the understanding to discern truth from error. He can establish the wavering mind, and give it a knowledge and a faith that will endure the test. Pray then; pray without ceasing. The Lord who heard Daniel s prayer, will hear yours if you will approach Him as Daniel did. Prayer, p. 90 In humble faith you may claim His promises, and feel that although you have nothing in yourself whereby you may claim the favor of God, because of the merits and righteousness of Christ, you may come boldly to the throne of grace, and find help in time of need. Youth Instructor, July 7, 1892, par. 3 Whereby are given unto us exceeding great and precious promises: that by these ye might be partakers of the divine nature, 2 Pet. 1:4 We have an inexhaustible storehouse, an ocean of love in the God of our salvation. He has placed in the hands of Christ all the treasures of the Heavenly resources and says, all these are for man, in order to convince fallen, sinful man of my love. That I May Know Him, p. 338 God will do the work if we will furnish Him the instruments. Testimonies, vol. 9, p. 107 Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. 1 Thess. 5:24 Let s NOT be satisfied with small things any longer Let s Dare to Ask for More based on the promises of God s Word! If we keep praying for the Rain, and humble our hearts before the Lord as a people, the Rain will come! 7
Inexhaustible, Measureless Promises for those who call upon God! ~ More Favorite quotes compiled by Melody ~ Man can accomplish nothing without God, and God has arranged His plans so as to accomplish nothing in the restoration of the human race without the cooperation of the human with the divine. The part man is required to sustain is immeasurably small, yet in the plan of God it is just that part that is needed to make the work a success. Amazing Grace, p. 319 You need not go to the ends of the earth for wisdom, for God is near. 146 All who consecrate soul, body, and spirit to God will be constantly receiving a new endowment of physical and mental power. The inexhaustible supplies of heaven are at their command. Christ gives them the breath of His own spirit, the life of His own life. The Holy Spirit puts forth its highest energies to work in heart and mind. Through co-operation with Christ they are complete in Him, and in their human weakness they are enabled to do the deeds of Omnipotence. Desire of Ages, p. 827 [Christ is] the inexhaustible source of grace. Child Guidance, p. 149 And the more responsible the position a man occupies, the fiercer and more determined are the assaults of the enemy. Let God s servants in every place study His word, looking constantly to Jesus, that they may be changed into His image. The inexhaustible fullness and the all-sufficiency of Christ are at our command if we walk before God in humility and contrition. Manuscript 140, In the prayer of faith there is a divine science; it is a science that everyone who would make his lifework a success must understand. Christ says, What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them. Mark 11:24. He makes it plain that our asking must be according to God's will; we must ask for the things that He has promised, and whatever we receive must be used in doing His will. The conditions met, the promise is unequivocal. We need look for no outward evidence of the blessing. The gift is in the promise, and we may go about our work assured that what God has promised He is able to perform, and that the gift, which we already possess, will be realized when we need it most. Education, p. 258 Prayer and faith will do what no power on earth can accomplish. Ministry of Healing, p. 509 He is well pleased when they make the very highest demands upon Him, that they may glorify His name. They may expect large things if they have faith in His promises. Desire of Ages, p. 668 From the soul that feels his need, nothing is withheld. He has unrestricted access to Him in whom all fullness dwells. Desire of Ages, p. 300 Watch unto prayer, Watch,... and pray always. A connection with the divine agency every 8
moment is essential to our progress. We may have had a measure of the Spirit of God, but by prayer and faith we are continually to seek more of the Spirit. Testimonies to Ministers and Gospel Workers, 507, 508 Prayer is a heaven-ordained means of success. Appeals, petitions, entreaties, between man and man, move men and act a part in controlling the affairs of nations. But prayer moves heaven. Prayer, faith, confidence in God, bring a divine power that sets human calculations at their real worth nothingness... He who places himself where God can enlighten him, advances, as it were, from the partial obscurity of dawn to the full radiance of noonday. In Heavenly Places, p. 75 Why is it that we do not receive more from Him who is the source of light and power? We expect too little Prayer, p. 90 We have too little faith. We limit the Holy One of Israel. We should be grateful that God condescends to use any of us as his instruments. Gospel Workers, p. 52 We must look to Christ; we must resist as He resisted; we must pray as He prayed; we must agonize as He agonized, if we would conquer as He conquered. That I May Know Him, p. 34 The greatest victories to the church of Christ or to the individual Christian are not those that are gained by talent or education, by wealth or the favor of men. They are those victories that are gained in the audience chamber with God, when earnest, agonizing faith lays hold upon the mighty arm of power. Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 203 God can do more in one moment to convict people than we can do in a lifetime. Therefore let us hold fast to the arm of Omnipotence. Signs of the Times, Nov. 7, 1900, Par 11 An appeal to Heaven by the humblest saint is more to be dreaded by Satan than the decrees of cabinets or the mandates of kings. In Heavenly Places, 82 The honor of His throne is staked for the fulfillment of His word unto us. I present Thy promise, Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you. Christ Object Lessons, p. 147 Every promise in the Word of God is for us. In your prayers, present the pledged word of Jehovah and by faith claim His promises. His word is the assurance that if you ask in faith, you will receive all spiritual blessings. Continue to ask, and you will receive exceeding abundantly above all that you ask or think. Educate yourself to have unlimited confidence in God. Cast all your care upon Him. Wait patiently for Him, and He will bring it to pass. In Heavenly Places, p. 71 Faith and feeling are as distinct as the east is from the west. Faith is not dependent on feeling. We must earnestly cry to God in faith, feeling or not feeling, and then live our prayers. Our assurance and evidence is God s Word, and after we have asked we must believe without doubting. Letter 7, 1892 Jacob prevailed because he was persevering and determined. His experience testifies to the power of importunate prayer. It is now that we are to learn this lesson of prevailing prayer, of unyielding faith. With the persevering faith of Jacob, with the unyielding persistence of Elijah, claim for yourself all that God has promised. Christ Object Lessons, p. 149 I saw that every prayer which is sent up in faith from an honest heart will be heard of God and answered, and the one that sent up the petition will have the blessing when he needs it most, and it will often exceed his expectations. Testimonies, vol. 1, p. 121 The enemy can NEVER take out of the hand of Christ the one who is simply trusting in His promises. Review and Herald, February 3, 1903 Just believe and praise God and go forward. We are almost home Bear your whole weight on the promises of God. Believe. It is your privilege to believe. Letter 31, Jan 1, We expect too little, and we receive according to our faith. Your temptations, your ideas, your feelings, must all be laid at the foot of the cross. Then the soul is ready to listen to words of divine instruction. In Heavenly Places, p. 107 Those who beg at midnight for the loaves to feed the hungry souls will be successful. 11 It is a part of God's plan to grant us, in answer to the prayer of faith, that which He would not bestow did we not thus ask. Great Controversy, p. 525 God will do marvelous things for those who trust in Him. It is because His professed people trust so much to their own wisdom, and do not give the Lord an opportunity to reveal His power in their behalf, that they have no more strength. He will help His believing children in every emergency if they will place their entire confidence in Him and implicitly obey Him. Testimonies, vol. 4, 163 Here are the great cities [around the world] with their millions of inhabitants that have not yet heard the last warning message. How are these to be warned? If the people of God would only exercise faith, He would work in a wonderful manner to accomplish this work. Hear the words of Christ: If two of you shall agree on earth as touching anything that they shall ask, it shall be done for them of My Father which is in heaven. Precious promise! Do we believe it? Historical Sketches of the Foreign Missions of the Seventh-day Adventists, 152 (1886). The obstacles that are piled by Satan across your path, though insurmountable as the eternal hills, shall disappear before the demand of faith. Nothing shall be impossible to you. Prayer, p. 138 They are to contend with supernatural forces, but they are assured of supernatural help. All the intelligences of heaven are in this army. And more than angels are in the ranks. The Holy Spirit, the representative of the Captain of the Lord s host, comes down to direct the battle. Our infirmities may be many, our sins and mistakes grievous; but the grace of God is for all who seek it with contrition. The power of Omnipotence is enlisted in behalf of those who trust in God. Christ Object Lessons, p. 176 We have a God whose ear is not closed to our petitions; and if we prove his word, he will honor our faith. He wants us to have all our interests interwoven with his interests, and then he can safely bless us; for we shall not then take glory to self when the blessing is ours, but shall render all the praise to God.
