1 Letter from the pastor My Lenten Bible study this year will be on Mary the Mother of Jesus. There is a lot more to Mary than Christmas. We will read the scriptures, watch videos on her life, look at famous art work and listen to music about Mary. The lessons will include some devotional writings about Mary. We will meet on Wednesday nights February 10 thru March 23rd from 6 to 7 pm in the church library. Everyone is invited. If you can not make all the classes, please come when you can. The discussion about Mary will be interesting. Someone might ask why study Mary during Lent? Because Mary is at the cross when Jesus dies, and she celebrates Pentecost after Easter. As I said, there is more to Mary than Christmas. Following the details of her life will give us a new perspective of Lent. Class one will introduce the 6 Marys of the New Testament. This will help us keep them all straight. We will look at her genealogy, learn from the prophecies and think about the annunciation. Class two will study the meaning of the virgin birth, review the birth of Jesus in Bethlehem and consider the gifts of the wise men. Class three will consider the infancy of Jesus at the temple and their escape to Egypt. We will think about where they stayed in Egypt and its meaning of overcoming the hardships of life. Class four will study the famous episode of the 12 year old Jesus being left at the temple and the parenting skills of Mary. Class five will study the wedding at Cana and when Mary visits Jesus during his preaching ministry. Mary encouraged Jesus in his ministry. Class six will think about Mary at the cross and the implications of Easter for Mary. Famous art work will include Michelangelo s Pieta the statue of Mary holding Jesus. Class seven will study Mary on Pentecost, Mary in Heaven and modern visions of Mary. Catholics venerate Mary while Protestants do not. What is the place of Mary in our lives? During the classes we will consider interesting questions like Why is Mary often portrayed wearing blue? There are many movies that portray Mary. To think about the different ways she is portrayed helps us to understand the meaning of her life. We will listen to music about Mary and consider the meaning of artwork depicting her life. I hope that you will find this Bible Study interesting and that we can learn from Mary about our own faith journey as we grow in our love of the Lord. We will make use of the December, 2015 National Geographic magazine that features Mary, the most powerful woman in the world. Why is Mary so powerful today? There is also a recent Life magazine entirely on the influence of Mary in our modern world. Your questions and comments will be helpful. My interest in Mary goes back to my 2 trips to Israel where we visited many shrines to Mary. The church in Nazareth where the angel Gabriel made the announcement to Mary that she would give birth to Jesus comes to mind. As Gabriel said, Hail, O favored one, the Lord is with you. Blessed are you among women. (Luke 1:28). Your Pastor, Rev. Clint Patterson
